OE (6) Newsgroup Dilemma

Q: OE (6) Newsgroup Dilemma

People,

How in the heck does one find the doggone servers available for various Newsgroups in Outlook Express, so that they can be added into the News (NNTP) server window in the internet connection wizard...to then check out the newsgroups available (on that server)?

Or...am I going about this the wrong way? I am assuming I use the *Internet Accounts* dialog, as opposed to the *Newsgroup Subscriptions* dialog...'cause I've never been able to figure out how to search for newsgroup servers in the latter.

There are quite a few useful newsgroups from Usenet, for example...which I'd like to post to conveniently from my e-mail utility (Outlook Express)...(as opposed to Google, on the web.

Need some help on this...

Thanks,

mark4man

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi mark4man

Your ISP most likely has some newsgroups servers you can access.
Also try a search on Google for Newsgroups.

Microsoft has some servers for Microsoft products:
news.microsoft.com
or
msnews.microsoft.com

Some newsgroups require subscriptions or a logon (like your ISP's servers will) or some, like Microsoft's do not.

I would like to try to access one NewsGroup about the game of Bridge and one other about Delphi programming.

FYI, Delphi is a programming language.

Can anyone tell me or point me to some info that will give me an overview of what I need to do and just how to find some appropriate newsgroups and how to access them?

Thank you.

A:Using a NewsGroup

First find a Net News server. My ISP is Mediacom, and I use their server as shown in this list.

When you've settled on a service there will probably be instructions. For me I just set up that Mediacom server as a POP mail server in my email client. I also had to enter a "real" email address to use. You can search the list of news groups for your interests.

I recently changed to ADSL here in Italy, but the news server (news.tin.it) does NOT show ALL messages in a thread.

What possible reason could there be?

I am able to check out the messages via http on google groups, but it is much easier to work thru outlook express as I have always done, marking threads I am interested in and seeing new messages in old threads I was following etc.

Does anybody know of a way to access newsgroup servers thru email programs like Outlook Express that are not my provider?

I am especially interested in the following:

Can anyone help me with this simple problem? I am trying to set up a news account for TSG in Outlook Express/Win2kPro but I cannot find the server name to insert in the account details under the server tab. I have asked to subscribe to a couple of the forums so things should be set up correctly at the TSG end but each time I attempt to access I am told:
"You are not subscribed to any newsgroups in this account.
Would you like to view a list of available newsgroups now?"

When I answer "Yes" it tries to download a list of newsgroups but I am eventually told:
"Unable to connect to the server."

The details tab shows:
Configuration:
Account: Code Guru
Server: www.codeguru.com
User name: albertb
Protocol: NNTP
Port: 119
Secure(SSL): 0
Code: 800ccc0e

Can you give me a starting point with this one please?

TSG does not have a news server. Subscribing to a forum will email you when there are new posts in that forum.

Newsgroup Access Problem
I have dial up access and am just switching to Ecossetel to allow fixed cost anytime access. I am having difficulty accessing their newsgroup server. This does require user name/password to be entered but when accessing I am repeatedly asked for this - I have checked with the ISP and these details and setup details appear OK. On one occasion I did get access and downloaded a list of newsgroups but now for no apparent reason I always get asked for security details. These are rejected even though correct. Before being asked for security details it does check for new messages. On 2 occasions Outlook express itself has given error messages in msoe.dll 000fbda0 mod 6.026000. I can access the newsgroup OK with my old ISP. I use Windows XP (this spontaneously reboots once or twice a week for no apparent reason but I don't think this is connected)
Thanks for any help David

Hi,
I want to be able to access some newsgroups (via outlook express) whilst on the lan at work. I can access the newsgroups at home without any problems, so I'm happy that it's configured fine. I've also know that there arent any FW issues here either.
Whilst most ISPs dont require any authentication to access their newsgroups, they do tend to restrict access to only those using them for the net access.
Can anyone point me in the direction of any servers hosting newsgroups that dont have that restriction?

Hello Bassfisher,

The forum sections are part of Vista Forums only and are fully moderated by the Administrators and Moderators here. The newsgroups are mirrored from the MS Public Newsgroups to here and back with us filtering out the junk. The MS Public Newsgroups are also mirrored by a lot of other websites to show up on the websites like it does here, so your post in the newsgroup will show up on any other website that mirrors these newsgroups as well.

Howdy:

I just downloaded a file from a newsgroup that is broken up into a lot of .rar files, a few .par2 files and a .sfv file. I have tried to open up all of these with a number of apps on my mac, including MacPAR, but no avail. This program states that ALL of the .rar files are "Missing" (at first) and then goes on to rename about 3/4 of them with the message "OK after renaming file to __". The process completes and an uncompressed file is not created in the end, and a message is displayed by the program that states, "An internal error occured during processing". In the end about 1/4 of the files are stated as "Missing", even though they exist in the download folder.

Help!

I am a WWII warbird enthusiast. Being the old geezer I am, I am new to the whole newsgroup thing. A buddy of mine directed me to them because of all of the wonderful pictures from airshows. Sure enough I found a bunch. In my browseing, I came across a few pictures that I am pretty sure were illegal. VERY illegal. Before I realised exaclty what I saw, I had flipped through 2 or 3. Now I am VERY worried. I was in a totally legit thread(?) or what ever they are called. Something like Alt.Binaries.Pictures.Aviation.Planes.

I guess I just need some reassurance that the police will not arrest me for this accident.
How could I have known?

One of my younger buddies told me that just flipping through isn't "traceble". However, another buddy said that Police see exaclty what you are viewing.

Usenet Gurus -

I have a basic understanding of how newsgroups work, but one question I have not been able to confirm...

When you access the newsgroups and read messages or view binaries, is any of the full text of the message or the .jpg viewed, etc. stored on the computer anywhere? Basically, I would like to know if there is a Newsgroup cache that stores actual files (other than which newsgroups I viewed, read/unread message numbers, headers, etc)? When I am done reading newsgroups, are the messages I viewed stored anywhere on my hard drive if I have not manually 'saved' the message/image.

If this question is newsreader dependent, I typically use Free Agent or Xnews to read.

Thanks in advance.

D.

A:Basic Newsgroup Question

Hi ddelmoni

I use Outlook Express to access the newsgroups.

The newsgroup file reflects what is currently on the server, though if I wanted, I could save that file and restore it on another computer or at a later date.
I just have to be careful not to be online so that the server is unable to update the file.

I usually copy/move the newsgroup posts I want to keep to another folder in Outlook Express.

If I unsubscribe to a newsgroup that file is usually eliminated from the directory.

I have not used Free Agent or Xnews, so I do not know how it saves the files.

Are you wanting to access some old newsgroup posts?

I have been using Outlook Express to access newsgroups for about 6 years with no trouble. About a month ago I started noticing all posts were not coming through, especially multiple message posts in the multimedia newsgroups. Usually, only the last part of a post shows up, for example message 10/10 of a file broken apart in to 10 messages. Other times, none of the messages show up but I see all kinds of people commenting on the clip. Also, if someone uploads a set of say 15 pictures in a series only about 5 to 10 of those will come through. My anti virus(avast) does not detect any virus and I have even ran a couple of web based virus checks(trendmicro, symantec) and no virus has been detected. I regularly run ad-aware and spybot and delete anything found and I don't see anything strange in my hijackthis log. I have checked all my settings and everything looks as it always has. I use OE6 and Windows 98 on a Gateway Pentium II 450mhz with 384mb ram. The newsgroup server is one provided by my ISP and I wanted to check everything on my end before I have to start dealing with them. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

I have Win 2000 Server and I'm setting up a test newsgroup for my company. When I set it to run unmoderated, it's fine. However, when I switch to moderated mode, it fails and returns an error message after trying to e-mail the news posting to the designated 'moderator' e-mail address.

Below is the error I'm getting:

Outlook Express could not post your message. Subject 'Test', Account: 'www.assessmenttechnology.com', Server: 'www.assessmenttechnology.com', Protocol: NNTP, Server Response: '441 (442) Article Rejected -- Failed to mail Article to [email protected]', Port: 119, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 441, Error Number: 0x800CCCA9
I checked the Microsoft knowledge base and there's one instance of a 'known bug' that will return an error very much like this. It says to contact them to get the hotfix (an nntp dll file). I did this, and restarted the server with the new dll, and I am still having this problem.

Has anyone done this before? It's possible I don't have the e-mail portion of this set up properly, since this server wasn't being used to move e-mail before this, and SMTP isn't set up on it (though I tried a bit with that, too, but there was no change). It's not being blocked by the firewall, as I have nothing _outgoing_ blocked, which this moderated e-mail is. I have it directed to our externally-hosted provider/e-mail server.

Hiya

What are you using to access Newsgroups? Is it Outlook or is it the web?

I'm trying to figure out what you are asking. Are you saying, all mpg's in one file, all avi's in another, etc. Or are you saying for them to be joined up in a file. eg, mpg.001 to mpg.020 joined together to make mpg?

If it is Outlook, you can download binaries if you have access to a paid server or even a free one. Free ones don't have that long a retention time.
You can set up rules to just have mpg's, etc and to get rid of the crap that somehow get in there.

If its via the web, there are some programs out there, though I haven't tried them.

Have a look here:

But as the price is quite low, and the download quantity high, I don't have any problem recommending them...

There have been none server problems in the 6 months that I've used the service either....

Another news provider which seems to be good is EasyNews.... Some friends of mine use it, and they've found it to be, as the name implies, very easy It is webbased afaik, which eliminates any need for a newsgroup program...

Hi Everyone,
I like using the netscape mail & newsgroup software for my email from sbcglobal.net.
I have a few different folders that I move my email to within that software. All of a sudden my messages within those folders won't come up! Occasionally I can see the folder "blink" and I can see the stored messages so I know they are on my hard drive somewhere!
How do I get the netscape mail & newsgroup software to see the appropriate folder again?
Thanks
Tim

A:Netscape Mail & Newsgroup?

Never used it so not sure. Don't even know where it would keeo the files at.

http://home.att.net/~cherokee68/ngsetup.html

But if it is in your mail folder then maby this will help.

http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns67cleaninstall2.html

Back up your folder first.
Maybe you can just delete the .msf extension file. They are the folder and if they are bad it does not know what is in the folder. So when you delete it with netscape close and open netscape again it rebuilds the file again. You also may not see the folder or the amount of mail in the folder may show ??? but click on it and it should show up right.
Like say you had a folder name Tim C. Your see a "Tim C " file and a Tim C.msf" file. The Tim C file is the mail and the Tim C.msf is the folder.
So if you know you have no mail in the Tim C.msf folder and it is 100's of MB then delete it and it gets rebuild.

Now got to say only the default folder get rebuiled. Any folder you made will not get rebuild.
So you got to play around more and do thing another way. Your want copies so backup.
Make new folders. Like if you had Tim C then make a new one called "Tim C-1" so your know what it is. Then take the Tim C file and I mean a copie of it and rename it to "Tim C-1"
More work but it works.

Note at the link above it also says...
This doesn't always work, and you may have to resubscribe.

There are many free news servers. The free servers are usually cobbled in some way. either by a capped doqnload speed, or only partials group coverage. You son can use motzaella, using verizon to get to one of the free servers

The title says it all. I am looking to get a good newsgroup reader, but don't know which ones work well with Windows 7 - 64bit.
Any recommendations?

i m using outlook express for my mails and newsgroup. Recently, when i was reading a newsgroup and i want to reply to a message. No matter how many times i click the "REPLY" button, a new reply will be pop out. But if i click on the "REPLY GROUP" button, the reply group window pops out.

Wats happening to my pc. i m running win XP on 384MB DDR RAM.

A:cant reply newsgroup using outlook express

I believe the reply button sends an email to the originator or the current author you are looking at. Reply group posts directly in the thread. I am not sure what you mean by "pops out"

This is the second time this has happened to me. I subscribed to a newsgroup; & attempted to send a message. The new message window doesn't have a sender box; & of course OE won't let me send the message because...you guessed it...there is no sender listed. I went into account info & entered a user name & listed my e-mail address in the e-mail address & reply address boxes, but still nothing. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
