Preferred Solution: cant delete extracted files from desktop

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a 64-bit Windows 8.1 HP. It came pre-installed 7-Zip. When I extract it changes the file names automatically upon extraction.

On my old Windows 7 desktop I had WinZip and this never happened. So I purchased and installed WinZip on the Windows 8.1 and the same thing happened, it changed the file name automatically.

I have tried all over the net and on this site to find a solution but to no avail. I also compared WinZip settings on the W7 and I can't really tell if they are the same as it is different on W8.1

My real concern is that when I extract the folder, it changes the files names adding additional characters where there would be spaces and then an extension of numbers.
Windows 7 did not do this at all. Please help!!! How can I turn this off?

I don't know if other people had this problem but I have a folder that I need to extract but apparently when I extract it to desktop, I click on the folder and noticed some files were missing. I check the unextracted folder and all the files were fine.
I realized when I extract the folder to desktop, the files aren't actually deleting because they seem to be there in the unextracted folder but not there when I extract them.
the next thing I tried is extracting one file that gets deleted from that folder into the desktop and then nothing happens. So the main thing is that the files wont extract to the desktop for a weird reason. I use McAfee anti virus and I tried disabling
everything possible from it and extracted the file. But it didn't work; also i'm running Windows 10.
All I know is that this is probably not from my antivirus and it has to do something with the file not being extracted.

Please help me fix this problem ASAP as the internet has no good answers or no answers at all.

I would like to ask how to set WinRAR to exclude files with the exact filenames: 'thumbs.db' or '.DS_Store' (without the quotes, ignore case) from being extracted from an archive.

Ex. Files with these filenames should not be extracted:

Quote:
Thumbs.db
thumbs.db
THUMBS.DB
.DS_Store
.ds_store
.DS_STORE

while files with these filenames should be extracted:

Quote:
1Thumbs.db
1thumbs.db
tackthumbs.db
Thumbs.db.txt
Abcd thumbs.db.txt
1.DS_Store
Abcd.ds_store
.DS_Store.txt
Abcd.DS_STORE.txt

In 'Settings->Security->Prohibited file types->File types to exclude from extracting', if I just type in 'thumbs.db .DS_Store' (without the quotes) in the field, will it work the way I described?

Also, does anyone know if WinRAR has a syntax guide for the Prohibited file types list in case I'd like to add more filenames or be flexible with the rules I need?

The reason for this question, is I'd like to not extract unnecessary files from ZIP, RAR or 7z archives in Windows 7 - files like Windows 2000/XP's Thumbs.db file (Thumbnail cache) and Mac OS X' .DS_Store file (Desktop Services Store), while not being too strict and also not extracting files which just contain 'Thumbs.db' or '.DS_Store' in its filename.

A:Setting WinRAR to exclude specified files from being extracted

Yes, it should work.

Here is a piece from WinRar 4.0 Help file

Quote:
Files to exclude
File masks and file names to exclude from the archiving operation. Wildcards are supported both in path and name parts of masks. If you need to specify several masks, separate them by spaces. If mask contains spaces, enclose it in quotes. For example, you may enter:

c:\temp\info.txt *.bak *.tmp *\temp\

to skip c:\temp\info.txt file, all .bak and .tmp files, all temp folders and all files in temp folders. You may enter file names manually or use "Append" button to browse for file to exclude.

Detailed information about exclusion masks syntax is provided in description of switch -x. This switch uses the same format of exclusion masks as "Files to exclude" field.

A:I dowloaded a rar/zip files of 256MB however when i extracted is 3.58G what program c

What was the extension of the compressed file and what types of files did it contain?

But it really isn't about the program doing the compressing but the data that is being compressed. Some types of files, such as many image files, are already compressed and any attempts at further compression will accomplish little if anything. Some file types, such as text files and some others, compress very well.

Hi,
I cannot delete exe files from desktop (Vista Home Premium SP1). I found a small program called unlocker that helps me deleting these files now, but it is still only a temporary solution.
The files are locked by the explorer process and sometimes by the sidebar process. Only exe files are affected. And only on the desktop. This problem appeared a couple of days ago. I cannot delete the exes, I cannot rename them, but I can replace them by a text file created in a folder (other than desktop), then renamed to the exact same name as the exe. But still I cannot delete even the 0Kb text file once it replaced the exe on the desktop.

Also, I am quite sure that I had an infection because yesterday after rebooting, the system lost the wallpaper (no wallpaper was shown and it was impossible to place one). Also, explorer lost the ability to show icons and thumbnails in newly opened folder windows. It's only after switching from thumbnail view to list and back that it started to generate thumbnails anew.

So after looking on this forum for a similar problem, I ran TempFix.vbe, then ComboFix.exe.

After running Combofix.exe, the wallpaper and thumbnails problems are solved so there definitely was some kind of infection. But still, the problem with explorer locking exe files on the desktop is still there, please help me get rid of it.

I have windows 7 64 bit.

And if I try to open the files, I get another error message "Location not Available"

Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the internet or your network, and then try again. I try to delete and drag to recycle bin, the message pops up and I can't do anything with them.

For some reason, anytime I drop a file on the desktop with a .exe extension, I can no longer delete that file from the desktop. Actually...I can delete it, but as soon as I hit F5 or e.g. log off and back on, the file simply reappears. I can only delete a .exe file permanently in Safe Mode. I do not have any problems deleting files with other extensions from the Desktop (but renaming a .exe on the Desktop does not work either).

I use build 7022. My UAC setting is off (slider all the way down). I do not use Offline folders.

When I right-click on the file, it takes about 25 seconds before the actions menu appears. If I then choose Properties, it takes about a minute before the Properties window appears. On the Security tab it says: "You do not have permissions to view or edit this object's permission settings." Under "Advanced" on the Owner tab, it says "Unable to display current owner." When I try to take owenership, it tells me "Access is denied".

I checked the permissions and ownership for my Desktop folder under C:\Users (also for All Users and Public Users), and according to those setting I should be owner and have full control.

What gives??

A:Can't delete .exe files from Desktop?

Hi mobidutch and welcome to the forum!

Please try the following;

Go to Control Panel>Folder Options>Views
Click to select "Show hidden files, folders, or drives
Remove the check mark on "Hide extensions for known file types"
Click on Apply

Go to your desktop and try to delete an exe file again.

Added:
Try to run error-checking/checkdisk on your drive
To do this, click on Start>Computer right click your C: Drive and select Properties
Put a check on "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" it will give you a prompt saying it will try to run on next reboot.
Reboot.

Another thing you can do is integrity check, you can do that by following the System File Checker post

I'm currently having problems deleting two files that are on my Desktop.
One file is hurl.exe and the second is aawsepersonal.exe.

I tried deleting these in Safemode, and in the cmd promt. But no luck yet.
Anyone have any suggestions? Each time I load up cmd prompt, I type del hurl.exe but it says it cannot find file. Ive tried typing in the exact file destination after del but no luck with that either. As you can probably tell I'm not very familular with using dos prompt.
If anyone has any suggestions on getting rid of these files either by special programs or using cmd prompt, etc.. I would truely appreciate it.

p.s. I did a search on these forums for hurl.exe and found a solved thread from a person who had the exact same problem. But I couldn't get the solution stated to work. I never really use cmd prompt so I'm sure i was typing something wrong.. Usually it just tells me It cannot find file, etc..

Weird stuff. I can't delete any icons or files off my desktop in Windows 2000. I've dragged them in the trash, renaming them, right clicked and deleted, etc. Also tried finding settings in desktop properties.

Initially, they look like the are deleted, but when I restart the computer, everything deleted comes back.

ALSO: I've run a full scan with Symantec antivirus, Spybot, Spyblaster, and Adaware. All come up clean.

A thought just occurred to me, it may be that nothing is deleting anywhere on the computer, I'll need to check for that tonight.

Meanwhile, any insights?

I've tried renaming it and I get the same message. I've also created a new file, named that file the same thing as the file I'm trying to get rid of.

I've tried to refresh the desktop, restart the computer, restart the computer in safe mode. None of that worked.

Can anyone help? I don't know a lot about computers so simple terms or step by step directions would be best. Thanks!

A:Popups, unknown program on desktop, cannot delete some files

You have no anti-virus software and no service packs!

You need to go here and install "Service Pack 1" This will patch numerous security holes in IE and Windows. As your machine stands now it is wide open to attack from all sorts of nasties. You need to get these updates before we proceed or we will be wasting our time.

DO NOT install Service pack 2 yet. If you install SP 2 on an infected machine it will cause serious problems. Just get Service Pack 1 installed. After you get SP1 installed, restart your computer. Come back here and post the new Hijack This log.

I have been using Webroot Desktop Firewall (WDF), Version 5.8.0.25, for about 2 years and just started having problems in deleting 34 WDF files from my Internet cache (c:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files). The first file is:

res://WDF.exe/gif/148 Last accessed 4/30/2010 8:35PM

The remaining 33 files are the same except for the last 3 digits, which are 148, 152, 150, 169, 164, 205, etc. (I can provide the digits for the remaining files if you need them). They were all last accessed at the same date and time.

I have tried to delete these files manually in SAFE mode (WDF is not loaded) but with no success. The only time I can delete them is, while in full operating mode, I close WDF, reopen WDF, and delete them from Windows Explorer without refreshing after reopening WDF. When I refresh, all the files come back plus new files that are repeats of the 34 original files except that they have new "Last accessed" dates/times that coincide with when I reopened WDF. I can delete these new files but not the old ones with the "Last accessed" date/time of 4/30/2010 8:35PM.

It appears that some glitch occurred with WDF on 4/30/2010 at 8:35PM that caused these 34 files to be permanently retained in the Internet cache while the files actually used during WDF operation are easily deleted.

I deleted all my index.dat files while in SAFE mode, but this did not fix the problem either.

This is not a huge deal as the 34 files occupy only... Read more

A:Can't delete Webroot Desktop Firewall files from Internet cache

I contacted Webroot about this problem, and they recommended uninstalling WDF and running a WDF removal tool that they provided via download. I tried these, but the files still stubbornly remain in my Internet cache. Note: when I try to delete them in SAFE mode, my PC beeps very loudly, and no notice comes up that they are in use by another program.

Webroot warned that I would not be able to reinstall WDF because it is no longer available as a free download for customers who have purchased other Webroot products. That was fine because I downloaded the free version of ZoneAlarm to replace WDF. I feel better about that because I don't want WDF leaving more impossible-to-delete files in my Internet cache.

Again, if anyone has recommendations for removing these files, please let me know!

Hello. Last year I installed one utility called Wrye Bash used to manage and install mods for the game Oblivion. This particular utility is distributed as a .zip archive, it has no installer. The installation instructions tell to simply extract the archive to the same installation folder where the game was installed. This archive contains folders and subfolders within it. Since July last year, I haven't used or updated Wrye Bash, and 75 new versions were released! Now I'd like to uninstall it first before installing the new version. Uninstalling wouldn't be necessary if the files to be extracted from the new archive overwrote all the files extracted earlier from the old version archive, but this doesn't happen for all the files: some of them are not overwritten. This brings me to this forum.

I'd like to know if there's any way to automatically uninstall (delete) all the files extracted from an archive. There must be a simple way to achieve this I'm not aware of. The hard way would be in Windows explorer to select each and every file in the destination directory which was extracted there from the archive, and then delete them. Is there any easier way to do this? Basically, I wish to know if there's any way to undo the extracting procedure, by automatically removing the files which were extracted to the destination directory.

I was hoping that converting the original .zip archive to a SFX archive with WinRar, I could then use this .exe SFX archive both to install (extract... Read more

Since I wasn't getting any replies here, I posted the same question above in Computer Hope Forums here and I got support there.
I don't know why, but I was not able to edit my own post above to correct a few things, I couldn't find the button to do it, although I can read in this same page under Posting Rules: ?You may edit your posts?. I even sent a message reporting that issue to the Forum Administrator, but I didn't receive any replies.

Hello Everybody,

I stupidly saved important folders to desktop; When I click properties says location is c\users\user\desktop which to me is where the folder and files are on the HD.

I have tried using a practise folder to get it from desktop to My Docs with properties showing as a Document, so I can delete from the desktop.
When I create folder on desktop and "send to" My Docs it appears in my doc but when I delete from desktop it deletes both.
I looked at a article about the old way drag and drop as XP did. Found the move to under edit but still can't do it.
there must be a way!
I do not use libraries as they confuse me as to where the file is stored on HD and I only have important docs twice a year, which is also the problem, as I don't repeat what I've learnt enough.

I've been storing some on my old XP drive [Has all my old records on] as I can work that, but I thought I could use the Win 7. Well I'm pathetic , I can't even move a document and know its safe on HD.

I do not use the libraries as sounds simple but I never believe I won't accidently delete.>

Any help will be appreciated.
Regards Shalimar

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
If you right click drag and drop you're offered several options
Move to

And my personal favorite cancel if you make a boo-boo

I want to extract a .zip file of Windows icons in XP.

To which folder should I extract them?

A:Where Should Icon Packs Be Extracted To?

make a new folder on your drive and name it icons and then when you want to change an icon to one you have unzipped, point it towards the folder you have created "icons"
it's not like Fonts, that has it's own folder - icons are usually associated with the program or app - when you want to change them, you have to tell the program or app where the new icon is that you want to use

Hi All, thanks for reading.
I have this bug type issue, when i extract files from either a .zip or .rar, every now and then when i go to delete the extracted files they appear to stay where they where, be it on the desktop usually or a specific folder, the files however have actually been sent to the bin but they still appear to remain where they were extracted too.
The only way i can make them go away is by stopping explorer in DM and restarting, then the 'ghost' files have gone from the desktop or folder.
I am totally up to date with updates, i ran all sorts of scans but nothing seems to stop this occurring from time to time which is also annoying because it doesn't happen every time !!!

Any ideas peeps

i've been relying on going to "internet options","general" and "delete" then ticking all the boxes on that page..i found out that by doing this,my temporary internet file swere NOT being deleted.is this a vista problem? my pc came to a complete sludge of a slow down today and i found that my internet files folder had files going back a year that hadn't been deleted as i've been relying on ticking those boxes..i had tons and tons of and tons of files.i'm wondering if this is the norm and also is it possible that other files are not being deleted when using that method? if so,then i probably have folders that are totally loaded with trash.

I don't know if this is the right section for me to post this in. But since it has to do with video ( in an off sort of way ) I figured I'd try it here.

My question probably either has no answer, or the answer is no ( what I'm figuring ) or if the answer is yes. it will be too complicated for me to perform on my own. lol. But is it possible, as the title of my post asks, to extract video for a dumpfile ( DMP ) created when my screen recorder froze. And I had to close the program using the task manager. ( end program )

It's quite a large file, ( 256 MBs ) so I figure there is possibly video data is in the file. ( along with any other info regarding the freeze up or crash I suppose )

One of my drives has just Windows XP Pro on it. NO service packs.

I have a usb2 mass storage device that connects to the xp drive but this storage device (drive) only functions with usb 1 capabilities. IF I install SP2 I can get usb2 capabilities but I notice that some of my games run more slowly. (I don't know why)

Is there any way I can extract just the USB2 drivers from the SP-2 disk so I don't have to install the entire service pack to the drive?

Thanks,
HULK

In an OpenOffice (version 3) text document it is possible to insert a table containing merge fields that are populated from a relational database.

It is also possible to perform calculations on cells, as in a spreadsheet. That is, a formula editor allows a cell to contain a formula that will display the result of a calculation on two other cells of the table.

This works perfectly with hard-coded data in the cells but I have been unable to find a way to perform calculations on cells containing merge fields representing data from an external source. All attempts to do so have produced an "Expression is faulty" message with no further hint. I have been unable to find anything relating to this in the somewhat chaotic OpenOffice documentation.

The aim is to convert a spreadsheet-based invoicing system to run from a relational database, thus eliminating duplicated data such as company names and addresses, and making integration with other documents using some of the same data easier and more efficient.

Can anyone help, please?

A:Calculating on fields extracted from database in OpenOffice

it may be the imported data from the data base is TEXT rather than a number to calc
in excel you can use =value() to convert a number thats formated as text into a number

I just tested in OpenOffice Calc and it has the same issue

format a cell as TEXT put a number in and it is right justified and will not calc
use =value() to convert to a number
now you can calc

I downloaded a .RAR with a 4 gig .mdf and a small .mds in it, and when I extract either one with WinRAR the files are nowhere to be found, but when I check my disk space I have 4 gigs less free. I tried searching for all files with the .mdf extension, and I tried turning on "show hidden files and folders" in Folder Options, but no luck. I tried three times in a different location each time, but the files are still nowhere to be found and each time 4 more gigs disappeared.

I've tried other .RAR's and they work fine. I have XP SP2. The name of the .mdf and .mds are in Japanese, if that makes a difference, but I have the Eastern Language Pack installed. Does anyone know how I can get my disk space back?

A:Extracted file can't be found, takes up space

i assume you log in as the machine's administrator, so what u need to do is go to control panel, folder options, select the view tab, then uncheck the hide extensions for known file types also uncheck the hide protected operating systems files.

Then do a *.RAR search of files in folders in ur local drives which hopefully will pick it up

Problem
When I start up whether in SAFE Mode or Normal I automatically get the Confirm Delete Message. This applies to programs, icons, photos, documents , folders etc-
I cannot get to any of my work to back it up.
I have tried Stinger -F-Force and [email protected] Removal Tools. Ran a full AVG scan with uptodate anti virus and Adaware Spyware

Sorry forgot to mention other things tried.

The Pop up message does not appear in the Task Manger either as applications or processes. Each time you respongd NO to negate the delete it pops up again.
There is no way I can get to any of my folders or files to burn to a CD as backup without the Confirm Delete message.
Grateful for any help or info as I have searched all possible sites that I know of.
Thanks

Sylvia

Hi all,

I'm new to Photoshop. I'm trying to save an image without the white square background. I was able to create a layer by going to Image > Extract and tracing around the object. I haven't figured out how to save the extracted object. When I save the image, it looks the same as the original (white background included). I've tried saving in different formats (JPG, GIF, PNG, etc.). How can I save the foreground image only? I've spent way too much time today looking for this, and it's probably very simple (and will make me feel like a schmuck I'm sure).

Thanks.
