DEP not working: After program ends normally, error message still says "Application has stopped working"

Q: DEP not working: After program ends normally, error message still says "Application has stopped working"

I have used "Data Execution Prevention" (DEP) listing my ACDC file viewer. I listedACDC because after it completes normally each time, there is an error message that says "Application has stopped working." I no longer want to see this error message.I use ACDC 7 for viewing and editing graphic files, here with this Windows 7 (64) system.

I usually select files with Windows Explorer, and they open using ACDC.

When I close the last file viewed, I get this error message that says "ACDSee 7.0 Application has stopped working"Installations of this ACDC on other Windows 7 computers do not have this issue. So I need to resolve it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

"A problem caused [name of program] to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." But no solution shows. I have been using the same HP Pavilion tx1000 for a year and a half with no software or compatibility issues. I run Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 1 - 32 bit. Slowly this message began to appear with every microsoft program I opened and then started to spread to non microsoft programs. I tried reinstalling the programs, doing a system restore to the oldest restore point I could, I also tried uninstalling any window updates that were installed right before my problems. I have read some strings that indicate it may be a compatibility issue between the service pack 1 and vista but the service pack came with the computer and it has been working fine until recently. I am at loss what to try next. Has anyone using Vista Home Home Premium experience anything like this!!!

For about the past 3 month I have started to see fairly frequent app crashes with the "application has stopped working error". It appears this started the week of 4/8 (from what I can tell via Reliability Monitor.)

Here are some of the applications that have been affected:
Zune.exe
wlmail.exe
Microsoft intellipoint
Windows Desktop Gadgets
Skype
ehshell.exe

I did not make any major system/application changes (besides plugging in a new wireless keyboard temporarily)

My system is a Dell XPS 420 running Windows 7 Ultimate x86 (about 4 years old). OS runs on a 100GB SSD that was clean installed about 22 months ago.

Trying to find out if there is some larger issue mounting. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

See if re-installing your Microsoft Mouse software resolves your problems. First, uninstall the software through Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Uninstall a program. Then download the latest version of the software if you can. If it is not available for download, use your disc that came with your mouse. Install the software fresh.

My understanding of the information given in your logs came from Microsoft IntelliPoint Readme and Release Notes. Good luck!

Greetings!

I'd like to throw some fresh sand onto this ( programs stop working in Windows Vista ) topic, which is ancient but appears to remain unresolved. I've had this same problem nefariously for many a moon now, while it isn't crippling of my computers performance it occurs frequently enough to make me question if perhaps it isn't a worm. I've consulted a series of forums about their respective programs, but after concluding that it isn't exclusively an issue with each individual program in which I encounter this application terminating error I am left to believe that it may indeed be an OS spanning bug.

Personally, I have received exactly the same suggestions for correcting the problem as have been listed here in response to this fellow's on at least half a dozen boards. Remove Norton! They say, this must be a fairly common and frustrating problem, Norton, and while i have no doubt that it's as tyrannical and computer devouring as people say it is it's never been on my system, ever! I'm running an HP Slimline, it's a great machine, with Vista Home Premium. This Error has stopped me from running my recently purchased edition of Avast! 4 Professional Edition's system scanner, a series of other nameless programs, and a handful of relatively unbeefy videogames like Phantasy Star Universe. When prompting windows to "find a solution to the problem" windows quite simply chooses not to, or can't, I can't tell because that's usually where the error prompt dissipates... Read more

A:"'Program' has stopped working, Windows will now close the program" Frequent Error

A) Don't bother trying to let Windows find a solution. 99% of the time it won't.

B) I assume 'many a moon' is not 'since new'. It's most likely a driver or app that has been installed and is conflicting with something.

C) Apart from Avast and Phantasy Star Universe, exactly what apps are crashing?

D) Your log doesn't show anything untoward. A few unnecessary start up items though.

E) Are all drivers, Windows Updates etc, up to date?
Check in Event viewer > Custom Views > Administrative events for the application crashes and see if there are any common 'faulting modules' that point to a particular file or files.

I work remotely through an F5 VPN with RSA dual authentication.  Once inside the firewall and into the intranet, I run RDC and connect to my work computer.  This has worked without fail for a year, but a couple of days ago, even though I VPN in
with no trouble and have access to other features and locations within the company's intranet, when I click Connect on the RDC dialog box, I get "An Internal Error has Occurred."  If I try "edit" on the RDC, it shows my internal userID
and asks for my pwd.  Then it gives me the same Internal Error message.  It doesn't seem to find the computer through RDC even though ping and tracert do see it. I spent hours on the phone with company tech support and they assured me the remote
box is on and they were able to remote into it.  I can also ping and tracert the remote box while VPN is active - I just can't connect.  No changes have been made in any configuration since it was set up over a year ago.
I need ideas on how to debug this as it seems to be on my home client machine.  Are there any diagnostics or tools I can use to try to find the problem?  I need this ASAP to be able to work.

Luckily Firefox is my main browser and I can do without IE (I think), but still would like it to function.

I have just bought a new laptop 2 weeks ago, pre-installed with Vista Home Premium and I haven't had any problems until just yesterday with this new OS. I've searched all over the internet for solutions, but the people who have the same problem seem to have problems with malware or spyware. Some people have suggested uninstalling programs that might have been installed on the current date, but the only program I have installed is Avast anti virus. I'm pretty sure it's not a problem with spyware but just to be sure I am running an anti virus scan again (I already did before and found nothing).
Oh ya forgot about the problem: Everytime I open my Program Files folder under the C drive a message comes up saying that Windows Explorer has stopped working, then Searching for a solution and then it just restarts windows explorer. I have checked with other folders and this doesn't happen. Weird thing is though that when I changed the way I view the folder for (previously my) documents, from details to tiles (the icons), the same thing happened. And when I open program files for a brief 2 seconds, it's in tiles mode.
Sorry the message is so long, just wanted to be exact. Anyone else have/had this problem or have a solution?

P.S. is Avast even any good of an anti virus?
P.P.S. I am able to access control panel and add/remove programs (program features) and this problem doesn't occur when I login in - as it did for some people

Yes I had the same problem unfortunately. I'm no computer tech, in fact, using this Vista programme seems to be a bit of a pain. But because of our problem and others, I'm learning fast. I nearly gave up hope and just before I threw the thing accross the room I thought "why not reinstall vista". It actually worked because the computer thought it was starting up for the first time. No probs. I cant say it will work for sure for you but I do no this, not meaning to scare you, I have only used this programme for 6 months and have had a great deal of hassle. Also from the feedback I have encountered, unless microsoft do something soon, you will need to brace yourself because there are too many faults with the programme. Good Luck. Z

I am constantly receiving the "Windows Explorer has Stopped Working", when using explorer.

After looking on the Microsoft Support, I ran System File Checker (CFS) but although CFS has reported it found corrupt files it was unable to fix some of them. I am also denied access to the report log so cannot find more information on these corrupt files. I'm currently running a full virus and malware scan but I'm not overly optimistic that this will sort the issue.

Could you please tell me how to sort this issue? The errors are making explorer unusable!

Thanks.

Solved.
a strange solution to my problem was to:

1) uninstall Sound and Audio devices from Device Manager.
2) Install a audio driver file from ASUS and install it.
3) It appears uninstalling devices from the CP\DM did the trick..I don't know why

I install ASUS Audio driver *not the Realtek driver; then ran RUN as an administrator, and slid right thru my problem.

Hello All,

I am experiencing a very debilitating issue with my laptop. The error indicated on the title of this thread appears every time I try to open multiple programs on my machine; the error is present in at least the following applications: Windows explorer, HP SimplePass, HP CSI Shell, HP Support Assistant, HP Installer, Adobe Acrobat X Pro, Synaptics TouchPad V7.5... and perhaps more.

I include with this message a zip file with some recent logs (CBS. log, Errors Event Viewer, Last Scan.txt, Malware log.txt, Check Disk Event Viewer log) for your review so that both of us can save some valuable time.

Note: I am not by any means an expert on either computer software or hardware so, I would really appreciate if you help me out to sort this issue having that in mind.

Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Error message: "A problem caused the program to stop working..."

Hi,

Can you remember when this problem started to happen, if so had you made any changes to the computer such as software installations?

If so, you can try a system restore or use a backup if you have one to roll the os back to a time when all was working well and see if this solves your problem

I can almost guarantee that this is either a damaged or corrupt shell or a conflict with some software, as the fact that you can load the operating system up and get past post shows that it's not hardware related in anyway

Thank you

Hi there,

Recently switched a laptop for a family member back from Windows 8 to Windows 7, thought all would be fine, but am running into some issues.

The laptop is an HP Envy Sleekbook 6 1126sa: HP ENVY Sleekbook 6-1126sa Product Specifications | HP? Support - and their site only lists drivers for windows 8.

After some googling I managed to find drivers for most things, apart from the touch pad, which is overly sensitive to clicks, and not sensitive enough to movement now. I'm sure that this could be fixed however with the correct driver, but do not know where to find it! Anyone?

The HP site says the touchpad is a: HP ImagePad with on/off button

The biggest problem though, is that a LOT of programs such as itunes, vlc, etc, did not work the first time I tried to run them, saying "_Application name here_ has stopped working" after clicking on their shortcut. However, if I then set them to run in compatibility mode for Windows 7, they'd work fine!

Not a huge issue, but it is irritating, and I'd like to know if anyone has any idea if it's fixable. I wonder if this too could be a driver issue? Though it's so inconsistent on which programs it does it with that I have really no idea.

Weirdly, the first program this error surfaced with, was when trying to run the Windows Performance Index thing, is the only additional info I can think of to start with.

Any help appreciated, thanks!

Hi all,

Just got my Vista machine from Dell, 2-days ago. Data transfer went smooth, things were going great.

The I started getting "Intel Alert Server Stopped Working" message on every startup.

I think I broke it with trying to load Norton Password Manager, which is not compatible with Vista, so I had to do an uninstall. It was after this reboot, the message started appearing.

Choosing RESTORE from several checkpoints did not work.
Cleaning the Registry, as best I could, did not work.
Googled "Intel Alert Server" nothing useful, from what I saw.
I have since reloaded Norton Internet Security and Money since it appears the the live update on both were also broke.

Two questions:
1. How do I get fixed the "Intel Alert Server" message?
2. Can you recommend a specific Vista-compatible password manager package?

Thanks, Nickie

Hi there,

Windows Update hangs and gives no error message but says no Windows Updates have been carried out (ever). Have tried to run SURT but it just hangs on the first step, searching for updates (left it for 3 hours or so). SFC Scan gives error message "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service". I attach CBS folder.

Be very grateful for any help.

A:When I start Vista all my programs say "(Program Name) has stopped working"

Can you try 'chkdsk' ? It is worth trying a simple check first, see what the effect is, before you do anything more serious. To use Windows 'chkdsk', in Vista, 1) Go to 'Start' type 'cmd' 2)in the list, right-click on 'cmd', choose 'Run as Administrator'
3)In the box, type, chkdsk/f (press enter) 3)type 'Y' 4) Reboot your PC and see if Windows can fix your problems with the system.

Ran Acronis True Image 2011 image backup last night and was set to auto shut down after image/verification completed.

This morning the screen still had Acronis running with the message "Program has stopped working". Closed Acronis and tried to reboot...but after two hours I still have the "closing" message on the screen:

"Operations are in progress. Please wait
The machine will be turned off automatically after the operations are complete"

Relatively small Windows installation with maybe 50 gigs being used on disk.

Have tried the PC case restart button...but nothing happens ?

Should I turn the PC box on & off via the main switch on the back of the box ?

Thanks...TRinAZ

A:Program "stopped working" - Windows shutting down for over 2 hours ?

This message is caused by Acronis. If you left the default verification schedule set, it will verify what is set to verify before it shuts down. This could be quite a few backups.
I just let mine run and then made sure all defaults are set to not schedule verifications.

You could try to shutdown and reboot but I have not tried that.

There is a windows message coming up on the middle of the screen every 5 minutes or so, warning that the "Dell Support Centre" has stopped working and that it will look for a solution.

So what can I do to disable this annoyance or even all the "Not working" warnings since they are useless to me anyway

A:Annoying "Stopped working" Windows message

Obviously there is some sort of problem with the machine so I would have thought solving that would stop the message.

Perhaps if you post back with more details about your machine and when this started to happen and what you were doing at the time one of the experts will be able to help you out, oh and Welcome to the forum.

Hi, I just joined this forum so I hope I can explain this so you understand. While I am working in my computer, reading email or just working in a software program, I periodically get this message that Windows Explorer has stopped working (and then an explanation that it is trying to fix it). Then it continues with another message about trying to fix it and it closes the program.

I don't know why this is happening but a lot of times I am in Windows Live Mail.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit (built by my computer store (Dnet Computers). I didn't put the specs in because I wasn't sure what to put in. I don't know what other information I can give you.

Thank you.

A:I get message that "Windows Explorer has stopped working"

Hi,

Please try this:

1. Click Start
2. In the search box, type cmd
3. In the list that appears, right-click on cmd.exe and choose Run as administrator
4. In the command window that opens, type sfc /scannow and hit enter.

Report the output once it finishes.

Also, gather your system specifications using this:

Hello there,
My problem is that about half of the games i try running on my laptop close immediatey, drops me back to the desktop and says the message "-nameofthegame- has stopped working". After that Vista searches for a solution, and tells me i should install a new graphic driver.
Which i just did ten minutes and one required restart ago.
I use a Dell inspirion 1525 laptop, all hardware is the same as it shipped with, my operating system is vista home basic 32-bit, which is also shipped whith the machine.
I have the latest drivers available from the dells support page. Vista is also updated itself a few hours ago.
I also tried to istall the Mobile Intel? 965 Express Chipset Familydrivers downloaded from intels homepage, but it wouldt let me install them.

Another issue i have is that vista just minimize the game (happens with fullscreen ones), and whenever i wabt to turn them back fullscreen, vista minimizes them again onto the tray...
Why is it doing that???

A:Most games closing, the message says it has "stopped working"

Sounds like a RAM problem to me. Does your computer meet the game's specifications?

Good Evening All,

First of all, let me apologize beforehand for the rambling post. I just don't really know where to start and what information is needed. I'm hoping there is hope for my Lenovo T410 laptop.
When I try to open most programs I get the error listed in the title of this post. Then it goes to "Windows is checking for a solution to the problem". Then it closes and goes away. I haven't been able to figure out any rhyme or reason to the apps that do not load.

I was stupid and recently performed every Windows Update that showed up and my problems have started since. One of my original problems was with GfxUI.exe stopping, so I uninstalled Microsoft.NET Framework and that seems to have helped with that error at least (original error screen shot attached, I think 2.0 is still on the machine). I've also manually uninstalled any of the updates I can specifically remember installing.
Additionally I've tried to do a system restore as far back as I am able, but that hasn't helped. I wish I had earlier restore points.

I don't think I have any viruses/malware as my McAfee and Malwarebytes haven't found anything, could be wrong. I have attached latest HijackThis log.

I cannot use any diagnostic tools (Microsoft Management Console, Lenovo ThinkvantageToolbox, etc), because everything closes. However, I have performed a few SFC scans and have a bunch of "Could not reproject corrupted file" entries; I didn't want to attach that without permission as i... Read more

It has been my experience that Windows 7 Pro is quite a bit overzealous in popping up the "Program has stopped working" message box, leaving me with no option except to close the program and start over.

This can become quite annoying when editing photos, as it often occurs just as I call up the save-as dialogue; thus I lose all of my work and must start over.

It seems Windows will throw that message box in there when it is obvious the program has not stopped working.

Is there something I can do to limit this behavior or turn it off altogether ?

Have you tried restoring it back to a restore checkpoint, before this "hacker attack" happened? If all else fails you could always try formating your PC, but when you format it unless you bought the vista (as in your pc didnt come preinstalled with it) you'd have to buy a new vista disc. ... where X = any program attempting to access the Internet.

Last week my computers were shut down for three days while I was out of town. When I started them up again upon my return, my office system (running Vista Business) was unable to access Internet. Any program's attempt to access the Internet immediately prompts the message, "Internet Explorer [or Firefox or Thunderbird or ePrompter or whatever] Has Stopped Working", and the program aborts. After various attempts to find a solution I ended up using System Restore to roll back a few days, after which all was normal. The other systems, running XP Pro, were fine.

Exactly the same thing occurred a couple months earlier. I "solved" the problem in the same way at that time. (I use the term 'solved' loosely, because I do not consider running System Restore a solution to the problem).

I'm sort of suspecting this may be an OS update gone wrong, but I'm not sure of that. Anyone know the real solution to this problem?

Thanks!

Hi, this is my first post here and I'm a bit of a noob so don't tear me a new one.
I just got a new computer preinstalled with windows 7 home premium. When running programs, mostly games, the program never starts properly and I get a message saying "such and such program has stopped working" and then the option to close the program, or close the program and check online for a solution. The check never works.
The problem event name is BEX.
So far this has happened with the launcher programs for 3 games- Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Mass Effect and it has happened once with windows explorer 8.
I've done a reinstall of windows 7 as that was the only thing I could think to do as at the time, I hadn't connected to the internet so the chance of viruses was pretty slim.
I'm at a complete loss as to what could be wrong. Any suggestions?

Hello,
I problem I have been geting in the past 2 days is that whenever I use the search index, like for example look in my librarys, program files, or look for anything on my computer, a box pops up saying "Windows explorer has stopped working", and whatever im searching for will automaticaly close. This is very frustrating because like everyone who owns a PC I search for files and such, and I have tried many things to try and fix this, including:

-System restore
-Uninstalling windows updates
-Restarting computer
-Disabeling Index service
-Disabeling Windows search service

I have read of a solution to this problem that involves deleting files related to the index, but again I cannot do this because every time I look in search index it automaticaly closes.

Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated

Try to do system file check first:
Start-->cmd (run as administrator)-->sfc /scannow (space between sfc and /)

If it does not work
Try a scan disk.
Disk Check

If it doesn't work, you might want to do a Repair Install , it will preserve your data, user account, and system driver

It doesn't matter what I am doing, and it occurs roughly every 1 minute. Sometimes less.

I'm not sure what the problem is. It started happening randomly about two days ago, and I had not installed anything that I could remember. I have since scanned my computer with Malwarebytes, Windows Defender, Spybot Search & Destroy, and the Microsoft Malicious Malware Removal Tool.
