Laptop Alienware 17 issues

Q: Laptop Alienware 17 issues

I believe that an update happened last night and when I turned on my computer this morning the mouse and external keyboard no longer work (except in bios and recovery settings) as well as the T-Pad buttons. I can still use the T-Pad to move the cursor but obviously can't click anything. The laptop keyboard also works. Can anyone suggest a way to fix this?
Currently I've tried booting into safe mode and my computer won't let me so I can't test that. I'm also uninstalling all recent updates.

Preferred Solution: Laptop Alienware 17 issues

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

so i've been playing TF2 for a while now on max resolution with max graphics and have little trouble running it, sure it gets a little laggy when there are 10 chars on screen all firing explosives but other then that its great.
but recently its just gone to hell, getting real bad lag when i'm jsut standing around.

i have no clue how to fix this, is the problem in the graphic card? the processor? maybe my internet conection? there are no adition programs running (other then MSN but thats always on). my buddy said i should restart the computer, something about the cache backing up and not getting cleaned out because i hadn't turned it off in a few days, i did that and it helped a little for a bit.

i have an alienware aurora M9700 laptop
speccs are
single core, 64 bit AMD turion 2.2 GHZ
2 gigs of ram
dual SLI enabled GeForce 7900 graphics cards
running windows XP
(for anyone that may not know this is more then enough to run TF2)

even WoW has been getting reaally laggy from time to time, and that runs flawlessly

any suggestions would be a big help,
my roomate sure isn't, just keeps telling me to run a benchmark

I've just about had it with my Alienware M17x laptop, and the Alienware Tech support "professionals".
I've been experiencing random shutdowns starting from the second day I owned the laptop (November, 2014), and occurring at most about once a week, and as frequently as once a day. I will be in the middle of browsing the internet, and the screen will go dark, the keyboard lights will go out, and I hear the fans wind down and the then the power button light will go dark. I don't get the typical Windows "Shutting Down" black screen, it just powers down all within about 2-3 seconds. It has even happened to me at the Windows Login screen, where I put in my password to log into Windows.
Suspecting overheating as the issue, Alienware tech support ran some benchmarking tests and determined that the processor was overheating (was reaching about 105° C), so they sent a technician to replace the heatsink and fan. It doesn't overheat now during benchmarking. But I'm still experiencing shutdowns, and now, I'm experiencing strange behaviors with my video card.
I have an AMD R9 M290x, and I can switch to the onboard graphics (on the motherboard) by pressing a key on the laptop and restarting. But now, when I do this, the computer restarts and throws errors at me saying the AMD card is not installed, or that the driver needs to be updated (this never used to happen). I wanted to try and just use the onboard graphics in order to try and determine if the shutdow... Read more

Please do not post these logs in host websites.  There members who will not download anything to their computer unless they know what it contains.
Because this computer is only two months old and is experiencing these problems I would either have it repaired by Dell, or have the vender you purchased it from replace it.

I made a post earlier this evening, and I thought I had it figured out, but it turns out I couldn't of been any further from right.
I'm having major issues trying to install ANY OS to this system, as Windows 7 refuses to read the hard drives in the setup.
--- Currently it's configured in RAID 0(stripe) I can take off the raid easily enough.
THE system BIOS refuses to detect the hard drives, no matter which configuration I choose to do it in.
I've attached a picture of the BIOS posting, for the forum to see what bios revision and such I'm running
The Windows Setup will refuse to detect the hard drives as well, THOUGH THEY WILL SHOW UP IN THE RAID configuration utility, both of them.

I went to attempt and install Windows XP to see if I could just revert to the original OS on this computer, and I can't even get the laptop to boot from the DVD ROM drive. :/ For some reason the BIOS has disabled boot from USB CD/DVD device, or something like that- with no option to try and re-enable it.
---------------re-enabled the CDBoot if so choose, I'm stuck on installing WIN 7 though.
In the BIOS I have 3 different options for the HD's. RAID, ATA, NONE.
Currently I have selected RAID for what I'm about to attempt, based on what another forum has had on it from nearly 2 years ago.

This is what I'm attempting now to fix this issue..

I purchased an Alienware X51 R3 (i5-6600K, 8GB DDR4, 1TB HDD, GTX 745 4GB DDR3).  It arrived today, and I noticed a problem:
I've updated Windows 10 Home, since then the machine boots, but has a black screen.  Sometimes cold restarts or unplugging the power cable for 30 seconds will result in booting to the desktop, but most times it doesn't.
Updated the GPU drivers, same thing.  Took out the 745, used the onboard HDMI... Same thing.  Tried the Win+P three times + Enter suggestion... Guess what? Same thing.
I've updated the BIOS to the latest revision too.
Any ideas what's going on, and how to fix this? It's driving me crackers that I have a machine I can't game one (OR USE!).

So just  last night when I went to sleep, I put my laptop to sleep. When I woke up the pc looked like it had been damaged. But that's not the case, or I don't think so.
But anyway, it would not turn on.
But now by some MIRACLE, the power button is glowing. And I believe its still asleep but, I can't wake it up by hard reset. Nor is it a display issue.
So yeah, Having some issues. Any solutions?

A:Alienware 13 r2 issues

What was the evidence of damage you saw?
Unplug the system, disconnect the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Verify that the LED on the adapter or DC plug is ON before you connect it to the system.  If it's not, replace it.
Remove and reinstall the memory modules.
Try powering up on AC only - if it will, but won't with the battery connected, replace the battery.
If it still won't power up, replace the mainboard.

Sorry in advance for the long post but i've tried nearly everything to fix my PC and still don't know what is wrong.

CPU: Intell i7 4770 Eight core processor
GPU: GTX 660
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
RAM: 8g

And keep in mind this was a prebuilt Alienware i semi customized around 2 years ago. Maybe 1 month after my warranty ran out all of these issues started popping up. *lucky me*

List of problems, and amount of times they have happened:

Bluescreen: maybe 3 or 4 times, has not happend in at least 4-6 months

Freezing while playing a game with sound looping, usually CSGO. Sometimes requires hard reboot and will not unfreeze. Other times will stop suddenly and say Kernel mode drive stopped working and has recovered. <- This happens nearly everyday, some times 10 times a day.

Lately my PC has also just stopped displaying out of nowhere. Sometimes after the PC will freeze i will reboot and when it reboots the screen is just black and there is nothing displayed on my monitor. Other times it will reboot normally and ill walk away from my PC while its on the desktop and come back to see a black screen.

And lastly, recently while playing CSGO my PC went black while playing instead of freezing and immediately after the fan(s) on my PC got EXTREMELY loud. So i then did a hardboot aging by just holding the power button down.

Iv had my computer in storage for a good while now and Iv decided to start using it again. I got it out of storage and plugged everything in and started it up. I got five beeps and a blank screen. I remembered that i always plug the hdmi cable into the wrong port. Easy fix. I start my pc up again and I got to my login screen. My computer has been offline for a while so I was going to connect it to the internet via WiFi to regain connectivity before logging in. About the time I?m connecting to my router my computer shuts off, restarts three times. Turns on and says your pc has ran into an issue collecting data. After the data was collected the pc restarted again then shutoff again. So I manually turned on my computer and the power light comes on at the power button but the Alienware logo doesn?t light up nor does the ambient lights on the sides. Iv did a power drain and nothing works. I can?t even get a screen to put it into recovery mode. I bought this PC in 2012.

You need to find out what SATA Controller you have and get the drivers for it and put them on a floppy disk. When installing Windows XP when it gives you the option to press F6 to install the drivers, you put the floppy disk in and follow the prompts to install the drivers then continue with installing Windows.

Let me start by saying that the Dell Support engineers have been fantastic  - I'm just unlucky and have a plagued laptop!

So the keyboard has been replaced 3 times, battery once, and a new motherboard. Since then games that I normally play with no issues (110 - 140FPS) have dropped to 20FPS and stay there, as soon as I lift the laptop off the table the FPS comes back up. So it's obvioulsy a heat issue. My problem is that before the motherboard was replaced this NEVER happened. I've got screenshots of the CPU getting up to 92 degrees playing Return to Wolfenstein (10 year old game?). I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas?

My only thoughts were that the thermal paste isn't on properly (or at all) or the power cable to the fan is caught / damaged and therefore not giving enough power to the fan.

It's got to the point that the laptop is so hot I can't use the keyboard.

I just got my new Alienware Laptop yesterday and everything was working fine, but I started to notice when I was in a browser (Chrome) and trying to type something into a box, it would stop typing, and it looks like it was going away from the box.  Then it would go back to it being highlighted.  Also outside of a browser window, I would right click on the desktop, and the menu would come up, then it would disappear.  I'm not sure what is going on with it, but the loading circle next to the mouse pointer comes up every few seconds.  Sorry my description of the problem is a little weird, but I'm not sure how else to describe it!  This is a Model AW17R4-7000SLV-PUS

1. Computer is very inconsistent in performance. Some days it runs very smooth, other times it can be painfully slow. Pretty unpredictable and not very reliable. Restarting does not usually significantly improve performance.

2. I've been having some serious frame rate issues while playing games which include: Runescape, MW3, Skyrim, and Minecraft. My Runescape fps has gone down from the usual 50fps to an average 25-35fps. The other three games mentioned are nearly unplayable because they run so choppy.
Every once in a while when loading a webpage or something, my computer will completely freeze for 20-30 seconds and the mouse cannot even be moved. I've noticed though, that when this happens, the audio from any music or videos continues to play nicely. I'm not sure if this is significant.

3. Performance off the charger is incredibly bad. In Runescape, my fps will fall from the 25-35 to 5-8fp when computer is unplugged. Even with the battery options set to high performance, simple tasks such typing can be laggy and irritating. Every other laptop I've used has performed nearly the same on and off the battery.

thanks guys.

A:alienware m17 shutdown issues!!!

If you arent sure how to flash the BIOS please be very careful. If its not done correctly you can say goodbye to the computer because it can damage the motherboard among other things. They rarely ever need to be flashed unless you are getting some kind of an error message. And you dont flash a BIOS from a flash drive to my knowledge. Ive only had to flash a BIOS one time because of an error message but i knew what i was doing and problem solved.Since the alienware is a dell laptop you might want to take it somewhere and find out what the problem really is and let them advise you from there.

Hello. I'm writing this cause I'm really desperate and don't know what else to do.. So few days ago I've bought an Alienware R3 laptop and since then wasn't unable to make Nvidia graphics card work. The card is 980m series, I've tried countless fixes, drivers, windows versions - nothing seems to help. In device manager it shows yellow triangle next to the Nvidia card and when playing games, laptop is using Intel graphics card which greatly impacts performance. There was only time I was able to make the video card do something when I disabled and enabled it in device manager, the screen turns black and normal again like it switched to a Nvidia but after few secs I get a message that" Nvidia has recovered". After that all I was able to achiebe is the yellow triangle in device manager, nothing else. I know this topic is beaten to death but I don't know where else to look for help..

I have been having an issue with my alienware battery. It is readying that my laptop is plugged in, charging and the batter is 86% full and it has been like that for a few months (mainly due to the fact that I can't afford to have it fixed or get a new battery if that's what it takes). If you remove the battery there is also a button you can push to see if it has power and it shows so many green lights coming on depending on how much charge it has and it come on as it should. When it first had this problem the lights were constantly on and they went back to working as they would if there wasn't an issue. I have made sure that my battery is enabled and all that. I would like to know what may have caused this to happen and if there is a way to fix it, or does it just need to be replaced..

I have a several year old Aurora R1.  I recently pulled it out of storage and am trying to get it back up and running.  When it was last shut down and stored it was working fine.  Now that it's out of storage and running again I can't get the OS to boot.  I got it booted once, and logged into windows fine.  Tried doing some Windows Updates but they failed as well.  Went to reboot and now all I get is a black screen after the Alienware splash and post beep.  I have never run the machine on OC, have upgraded the Ram, HDD, and graphics card.  Ram was upgraded to 24GB Corsair Dominator, HDD is a Sandisk Extreme 240gb, and Graphics is a GTX 770 classified.  The other odd thing I noticed is that the RAM as it displays in the bios somehow lost 8gb.  I swapped the sticks around and now it is seeing all 24 again.  I'm trying to decide if it's the RAM or the MB at this point.  I've tried dropping the ram down to a single stick on bank 1 (4gb), with different sticks to ensure I'm not using a bad stick, but still no luck.  Running Bios version A11.
Also, i've tried swapping the HDD around on different channels and changing the boot sequence to match.  It won't even boot from a thumb drive that is visible in the boot options list.  I must admit that my trouble shooting skills on hardware have gone downhill lately, so i'm turning to you guys for any thoughts.  Oh, the O... Among other things I want to use them for my Alienware M17x R2 laptop.
When I plug them in, the sound is low and cracking up/distorted, especially with explosion-sounds, crowds cheering loudly etc.
I've tried changing most sound settings and reinstalling/updating drivers, but to no effect.
I've also tried using a "splitter" (4 pin-to-3 pin) on the minijack, to separate headphones and microphone, but it doesn't help either.
My old headphones have no issues.

So last week the battery died, which was already a warning sign. It stopped charging. Now this morning I go to turn on my laptop (which was perfectly fine 6 hours prior), even played hardware intensive games with it without any problems). And then suddenly this morning it absolutely died without any rhyme or reason to it. Just as I was about to go on vacation with it as well. The laptop makes no noises, hard drives don't turn on, fans dont turn on, LCD and keyboard remain black. It's absolutely lifeless, well except for 7 beeps that is. I know this indicates some sort of CPU failure. First tried to call dell support but of course they return on monday and couldnt help me now. Then I went searching on the internet. Tried to let it heat up wrapped in a blanket like a video suggested, which did nothing because the system is hardly putting out any power. Then I tried to let the battery die by leaving it turned on, a few hours of this and it was still beeping without the AC connected. Then I opened it up, drqined the battery which did absolutely nothing and finally i checked the CPU, removed it and powered the system on. Still 7 beeps, supposed to be 5 now according to people online. Well that didnt help so I aplied new cooling paste which did nothing. I'm kind of at the end of my rope here. Need the laptop for college and I don't have the money to buy a new one. Of course the warranty has long since expired but I had problems with this thing since the beginning, a... Read more

I have recently tried to upgrade my old graphics card in my Alienware M17x R2. However I cannot figure out the driver errors I am getting.

Currently the card shows as "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)" and it has the following hardware ID's. GPU-Z shows this:

I have tried modifying the "nvdmi.inf" such that these ID's are included however I have no success with the current driver 375.95 from the NVIDIA website.

I would love some insight into anything I am missing or other things I should consider.
Currently running the latest bios release from the manufacturer.

Cheers for any help.

Hello, as the title states, I am having issues with my two finger scrolling with my touchpad. My computer is a new alienware 15, and I am currently running windows 8.1. I do have two finger scrolling enabled, and it works, it just acts weirdly and I would like help understanding what is going on.
This first and primary issue, is that while scrolling up or down a page, I will randomly jump way down the page or way up the page. I am not able to reproduce this issue consistently, so I haven't been able to properly measure it, it just occurs randomly while browsing. I believe it always jumps down while scrolling down and vise versa, but I'm not sure. And I believe the distance of the jump is about equal to page up or page down, but that might just be wishful thinking. I have no idea what is causing this, I have completely disabled tapping, so it shouldn't be zone tapping for page up and page down, but I don't know what else it could be.
The next thing isn't really an issue, but more something I'd like to understand the significance of. When I start the two finger scrolling gesture, a little box appears (seemingly in a random location) and shrinks away almost instantly. It seems to have nothing to do with where my mouse is, nor where my fingers are on the trackpad, so I really don't understand what it's communicating to me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Issues with two finger scrolling on the alienware 15 synaptic touchpad running windows 8.1

I had the exact same problem, very annoying, I have Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro, but the touchpad is Synaptics as well. So after a lot of searching on this issue, there was one possible solution: Remove the manufacturer driver, and install drivers from synaptics website. www.synaptics.com/.../drivers.php
If you cannot install the driver from synaptics website, (mine failed the first try), then you have to follow these steps:
1. After uninstalling the manufacturer synaptics driver, go to the lower right side of the screen, and click settings -- > power --> hold Shift key and press Restart.
2. A blue screen will appear with options. Choose Troubleshoot --> Advanced Options --> Startup Settings --> Click Restart.
3. After that, your computer restarts, shows u a numbered menu, choose number 7, which will turn off driver signatures.
4. When you are back in windows, download and install the driver from the synaptics website and install.

Hope it works, it worked for me.

A:Alienware laptop on the go

We have seen a number of failed Alienware laptops in our shop. They seem to be having a series of manufacturing problems, despite being purchased by Dell.

Be sure you get the longest possible warranty? And remember it is now a Dell with the contract Dell service techs coming to your house without a clue.

I would go for a high end HP, or a high end Dell or ASUS over the Alienware, dispite the sometimes appealing configurations.

Hey that's not a bad price at all. But keep in mind that Alienware's customer support has deteriorated over the years, not the least due to them being owned by Dell. I'd suggest the Zatoichi from www.killernotebooks.com. Sure, it's a Turion X2 but you can get a custom skin on it, as well as a bigger HDD for a lower price than the Alienware. Give it a shot.

You need to go into the bios to disable the on board video, most systems repeatedly tap F2 during boot.

I know this may seem small, but I have a good buddy that is buying an alienware laptop Area 51 extreme and he cannot decide between a p4 3.4Ghz with a 512K cache and a p4 3.2 Ghzwith 2.5Meg cache. Which will give him better performance on the latest and greatest games. There is a $600 difference between the 2 with the larger cache laptop being more expencive.

A:Help on Alienware Laptop which processor

The one with the larger cache will obviously give you the better performance. If the caches were the same you would notice little or no difference in performance.

A:alienware laptop over heats

Hello pcmatty,

How old is the laptop? It seems that something isn't cooling properly. If you have any pets it might be that one of the intake fans took in too much hair / dander and is not working right, or a fan could just be broken all together. Is it possible to remove the keyboard or a panel on the backside of the laptop in order get a closer look and see what is overheating specifically? It sounds like your graphics card is over heating which is causing the performance drop.

I wanted to do an alien respawn on my computer, but it would spontanelously power off during the process at seemingly random times. It now has stopped booting, it will get to the first boot screen (alien head) and then go dark and start again, over and over again. I can boot from the respawn disk, but it still powers off for no apparent reason...I am about to take it to geek squad, but I am wondering if it could be something I can repair myself...problem is, I dont know what to repair, I dont think it is the battery because i have it plugged in, other than that I am at a wall....

A:bejewelled 2 on Alienware laptop

When it happens, do you see another program just starting to run by it self? If not, then your probably hitting the windows key by accident. There are usually 2 on the keyboard, both are located by alt, or atleast on my keyboard they are.

PSU? or the motherboard? Thank in advance.

Too early to say, ie it could be anything, even the Ram.

Can anyone confirm this, the specifications PDF says it uses mSata, but the configuration shows pcie SSD options.
Are the slots in the 17 R4 mSata or M2 slots?

A:Alienware 17 R4 laptop -Uses mSATA?!

They are M.2 PCIe -- not MSATA or M.2 SATA.
(assuming this is the 17R4 and not the older M17x R4, which is a totally different system).

I'm going to be as specific as I can be becasue I really need to fix this problem ASAP.

I bought an Alienware 7700 Area-51 laptop and all I've been getting is problems. Video card faliure, Viruses? and this.

It was working fine a few days ago, RIGHT after I had just got it back from having a new video card replace the defective one. I was getting re aquanted with my computer when it suddently froze. I've had computers freeze before so I didn't saee a problem. I restarted my computer and I haven't been able to enter windows since.

At first I noticed that the POST ended itself with the message "operating system not found"

Upon closer look, after "Scanning for IDE drives" the POST informed the that there is "No Drive attached to FastTrak controller. No BIOS is installed."

Then it would resume the completion by saying "Operating System not found"

I gave up on trying to recover all my data. I'll do anything to get it to work.
I can't reinstall Windows beause it wont detect my drives.

They're two 60 gigs connected through RAID and they never had a problem before.

While in POST it informs me that my BIOS is a FastTrak 378 tm BIOS Promise Technology.

After clicking F2 to enter Setup Utility it says on top
"Phoenix cME FirstBIOS Pro Setup Utility.

I don't know what to do. I hope I provided enough information. Please help.

A:Need help with Alienware laptop BIOS

Also, I'm not an expert on laptops or anything so if you know what the problem is and what I have to do, don't move to fast. I wont know very many technical terms ect.
