I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Dimension 9200 / XPS 410 DXP061 with Core 2 Duo E6300 can go all the way to windows 10 pro. Yes the XPS 410 will accept and fully use all 8 GB of RAM when running a 64 bit O/S. I currently have 8GB.
So if you upgrade to a modest Radeon HD 6450 from asus. You are good to go.

Last night after reinstalling my Office 2007 and Outlook 2007 software I ran Windows update. There were a number of Windows 8 updates as well as Service Pack 1 for Office. There was also one optional update for a technical driver/program (I don't remember the name and can't get to Control Panel to find it out.) I don't know what caused the crash. I believe I need to reinstall Windows 8 (have to use a flash drive because my Dell Duo has no optical drive) and will get some help this afternoon to do that.

Is Office 2007 causing the problem? It seemed to run fine after I downloaded and activated it. Our IT person thinks I'll do better to download the free trial of Office 2010. I was trying to avoid the added expense of new Office software. I'm not knowledgeable enough to anything more than follow directions.

A computer is something I use to do my job, not something I like to tinker with! I wanted the Windows 8 because I have the Dell Duo and its touch screen does not work well with Windows 7.

A:Windows 8 crashed after running updates, need help understanding why

Sorry, Jacquelyn, I would advise that you get Windows 7 working properly with the Dell Duo touch screen - with the help of Dell Support, and any IT support engineer you have for your Job, and not run Windows 8 preview software until it is officially supported. Running the Consumer Preview on your work machine is tinkering!

If you must run Windows 8, do it where it can do no harm.

Dear IT Pros,
I have 2 questions that need your help and professional advice.
1) Does Microsoft has a tool to check whether a patch (KB) was superseded by another KB? In my case, I'm trying to search whether this KB4022715 and KB4025339 (both of this KB was released in 2017) was superceded
by another KB. This is because a security consultant has advised us to install both of this KB to prevent vulnerabilities but since it was released back in 2017, I suspect there must be a newer KB that supercedes it
2) Can advice what KB I need to download regarding this 2 bulletin ID CVE-2017-5715 and CVE-2019-11135? Can't seem to find it after much googling

Thanks in advance for the help

Hi, we are becoming more and more frustrated with the forced windows updates. These may help home users but professional products like servers are not for everyday users and sometimes require alot of configuration to get legacy applications to work.
Windows will at times force updates no matter what we choose in respect to disable them. It is NOT up to Microsoft to determine if or when the servers I am responsible for need to be patched. Any reading and research we have done here has only yielded the
ability to prolong the updates. Once installed over 50% of the servers give an endless spinning circle and require restore or rebuild, this has become unacceptable and has forced us to start testing our applications with different Linux flavors.

Is there a way to STOP the updates indefinitely?

Good morning everyone,

I am once again having to ask for help here because I've been unable to install the Patch Tuesday updates released July 12th. (I received the "Updates available" notification yesterday afternoon, July 13th). WU just keeps searching endlessly, and after 2 hours, I restarted the computer to stop the process. (It could not be stopped in Task Manager).

(All day yesterday, July 13th, my CPU kept hovering in the 50% - 60% usage range both off-line and on-line. The only way I could get it to return to normal was what I did in Item # 2 shown below).

Also, NO error codes are being seen either.

Things I have tried thus far:

1. Ran full scans, including for rootkits with my ESET Smart Security, MBAM Premier, and SAS programs. NO issues found.

2. Opened Control Panel > Windows Updates, and changed the existing setting (i.e. Notify me of updates, but let me decide to download and install) to "Never check for updates". I then restarted the computer.

3. Ran the sfc /scannow command. NO issues reported.

4. Ran the SURT tool. The dialog box opened indicating it was initializing and said something about looking for updates. When I checked the computer several hours later, the dialog box said something like, "Installation complete". I closed the box.
However, none of the 10 Important updates (in this month's updates) were installed when I checked the WU list of installed updates.

Hello All,
I have a laptop that I've been trying to install updates on for the past seven days.  However, no matter what I seem to do, Windows Update shows the "Checking for updates" progress bar with the green marquee.  Here is what I've tried:

1.  Let it check for updates for two days continuously.
2.  Ensured that Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is activated.
3.  Made sure that the two services (BITS and Windows Update) are enabled and running.
4.  Reinstalled Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (twice now), and tried to run updates on a clean install.
5.  Made sure that the computer can connect to the internet.
6.  Tried AutoPatcher (on the previous install), which could download the updates, but would hang on installing them.

I'm running sfc /scannow to see if it finds anything, but this is currently a fresh install.  The only drivers installed are the ones that worked from install, and no new programs have been installed.

Are updates currently just broken for Windows in general, or specific versions of Windows (such as 7)?
Thanks in advance.

Good evening everyone,

My issue is with today's 'Patch Tuesday' Windows Updates.

[System: Win7 Home Premium SP1 x64]. Computer is a standalone, not on any network, and used only by me.

Description of problem:

There were something like 14 - 16 important updates in today's batch. Most of them did NOT install. (Please see attached screenshots showing this + my current WU settings, at the bottom of this post).
NO error codes are being displayed. WU just keeps saying it is downloading updates. The 'download progress' remains at "0%" the entire time, however.

Resolutions attempted thus far:

1. Ran CCleaner, then tried to update again. No success.
2. Restarted computer 3 times, then attempted to update, without success.
3. UNCHECKED all updates except for 3, and tried updating just those 3.
Problem remains.
4. On the 3rd attempt, after waiting 15 minutes, I cancelled the download/installation.
5. Ran scans with ESET Smart Security (v9), MBAM Premier, and SAS. No issues were found.

My question: Is there an explanation for, & a resolution to, this problem?

The only potential explanation I could think of is the Windows Update servers are too busy???
(Don't recall having encountered this type of problem before).

Thank you for your for time and any help!

Hi
Sure,
When manually installing updates you need to switch your update settings to Never check for updates and restart the machine first.
Windows Update Settings - Change
After restart verify that the windows update service is not running if it is Stop and switch to Manual apply and okay.
Make sure KB3020369 is installed if not manually install it this is the main article page with all versions,
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3020369

https://download.microsoft.com/downl...020369-x86.msu
Win-7 64 bit
https://download.microsoft.com/downl...020369-x64.msu

Then manually install KB3172605 main article page with all versions,

A:Will Reinstalling Windows 10 affect Microsoft Office 2016 updates?

That depends on how you plan on reinstalling Windows 10.

Do it this way and you lose everything, including all your data files and Office 2016 completely, including updates. You will have to reinstall everything:
Windows 10 - Clean Install - Windows 10 Forums

Do it this way, and you only refresh Windows 10 itself and nothing else should be affected, including Office 2016:

Hello, Peeps.

The following Recommended Updates were offered today. I had previous information on all except the last four, which I Googled today.
Most are, it seems, repetitions of the Windows 10 Update stuff that many of us avoided all those months ago. So the hassle would seem to be ongoing. However, the last one, KB3184143 is an uninstaller for several of those annoying very same W10 Updates. Odd. Giveth with one hand, taketh away with the other. A couple of the last four seem OK, and (KB3181988) I have been having problems with sfc/ scannow reporting 'corrupt files but unable to repair' for a while now. Maybe this will sort them out.
The information below is taken from several sources, and the credit belongs mostly to others. I'm just passing it on.

Hi:

GWX has ended.
MS even issued a patch to remove it from Win7-SP1 systems, KB3184143
If you want to subscribe to perpetual paranoia about getting Win10 on your Win7 box, that's up to you.

Also, the current version of KB2952664 has nothing to do with either GWX or telemetry:

Quote:
There is no GWX or upgrade functionality contained in this update.

As for the rest, I'll leave that to other members more interested in this topic than I am.
For the record, though, Apple and Google also use telemetry.
Telemetry cuts both ways -- without aggregate data about how an OS performs in the real world, MS cannot be expected to code needed security and stability patches for Windows or its other major software (such as Office) that will perform properly.
I find it ironic that some of the folks who most loudly decry "telemetry" are the same folks who are first to complain about a "bad" patch on Patch Tuesday. (That's not directed at you personally or anyone else in particular.)

There is a definitive solution. If one destroys all of one's electronic and analog communication and computing devices, physically cuts all cables, fiber-optic lines and other connections to the outside world (not just the internet), and cuts up all of one's credit/debit cards, one can be reasonably safe.

Microsoft confirms no more Windows 10 feature updates in 2016; two coming in 2017

Microsoft published a TechNet blog post on Tuesday regarding what's new in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. In the article, the company confirmed that it has two feature updates planned for 2017, but no more for this year.

Based on feedback from organizations moving to Windows 10, this will be our last feature update for 2016, with two additional feature updates expected in 2017.

The news is right in line with current rumors. Tuesday's Anniversary Update would be the one feature update for this year, and Redstone 2 - the codename for the next major Windows 10 update - isn't slated to arrive until April 2017. Redstone 3 is rumored as well, but without any release timing, so with today's news, it's presumably late 2017.

It's also in line with what Microsoft has already said. Back in May, the firm said that it would be pushing two feature updates for Windows 10 every year.

The obvious question that you're probably asking is, if Microsoft said that it would release two updates per year, why would the company only release one this year? Well, when Microsoft says the word 'year', it could mean a calendar year, or it could mean a fiscal year, which would be over at the end of June. With that in mind, the firm has released two major updates for Windows 10 every year, and is on pace to do so, even with Redstone 2 coming in April.

After having installed the Windows 7 04/2016 updates today, I found that I couldn't start Firefox anymore - it just hangs and uses up 1 core. Then I tried IE - hangs and eats up another core. Same for Chrome and Opera. Then I began to suspect EMET and started
Word 2010, Adobe Reader, Thunderbird, WL Mail - all the same. Applications not opted into EMET continued to work.
I then tried to deactivate EMET's mitigations one by one and found that I had to disable "EAF" mitigation to use my apps again.

(I didn't yet try to find out which of the updates is the root of this by uninstalling 1 by 1, since WU took so long (hours) to find updates _at all_ that I haven't yet dared... Maybe later I'll try to install the updates manually on another machine and
see if I find sth.)
Is it just me who's seeing this?

System: 32bit Windows 7 Enterprise, EMET 5.5, all updates from WU (except MSRT) installed.

In a recent blog post, Google announced that it intends to discontinue support for Chrome on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Mac OS X versions 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8 by April 2016 because "these platforms are no longer actively supported by Microsoft and Apple." Google did not release a specific date when for when it intends to discontinue support.
Google notes that current versions of Chrome "will continue to function on these platforms" after support for Chrome is discontinued, but the company encourages users to upgrade to newer operating systems so that they may continue to use the latest versions of the web browser.

A:Google to end support for Chrome on Windows XP, Vista OS X 10.6,1 in April 2016

Earlier this year, we announced that Google Chrome would continue support for Windows XP through the remainder of 2015.  At that time, we strongly encouraged users on older, unsupported platforms such as Windows XP to update to a supported, secure operating system. Such older platforms are missing critical security updates and have a greater potential to be infected by viruses and malware.
Today, we’re announcing the end of Chrome’s support for Windows XP, as well as Windows Vista, and Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8, since these platforms are no longer actively supported by Microsoft and Apple. Starting April 2016, Chrome will continue to function on these platforms but will no longer receive updates and security fixes.
If you are still on one of these unsupported platforms, we encourage you to move to a newer operating system to ensure that you continue to receive the latest Chrome versions and features.

Support for Windows XP and Vista will end April 2016 - Emsisoft BlogStatistics today show that both Windows XP and Vista usage dropped dramatically since then. Among our customers the percentage has already dropped below the ten percent mark, with a continued trend downwards. As a direct result, we decided not to renew our extended support for Windows XP beyond April 2016. We will drop support for both Windows XP and Vista in the next major version of all our products, which is scheduled for release in 2016.We fully understand that in many circumstances users have no way but to continue using XP or Vista, either due to computer upgrade budget restraints or because some old hardware devices dont come with drivers for newer operating systems at all. In these cases, we are offering partial refunds for any license time users cant use due to the changed minimum system requirements.

No matter what I try, I can't get Vista Security to let me work the way I want. I'm hoping someone can help me understand this stuff, or point me to some resources that explain it. Here's my situation:
I have a notebook PC for my work, running Vista Business. At work I'm a member of a domain called SSK, with account RowanB.
At home I have a home network, with a computer also running Vista Business, which is primarily my wife's. We have no domain controller at home. When I'm at home, I want to be able to plug my notebook into the network, and access network shares on the home computer, some owned by me, and some owned by my wife. I'd also like my wife to be able to access network shares on my notebook PC. Also all our printers, and my e-mail server, are installed on the home computer. I need to be able to access these services from the notebook, too.
I just can't get this stuff to work reliably. For a couple of weeks now, I've not been able to access the netework shares on the home computer from the notebook, although the printing and the e-mail have been working fine. There's never any problem with pinging - I can always ping in both directions, so this is a Windows problem, not a TCP problem. Then today, mysteriously, I suddenly can access the network shares again.
We don't need any complex security on the home network. We are both set up as administrators. There's nothing I'm trying to stop my wife accessing o... Read more

When i have a new problem, it opens new questions.

This laptop [Asus G50vt] came with three partitions on the HD.
Hidden [called RECOVERY] about 11 gb
Visat-64, about 150 gb
Data, about 200gb

Upon trying to solve another problem, I used partition manager to boot and look at the partitions.

What is the purpose of the hidden partition? Other than using PM, I would not even know it's there.

It's about 90% full, so it has something, but what, and how can I use it? Or do I? It's title is RECOVERY, but, ah, recover what?

A:Understanding hidden Vista partitions

It's most likely an OS image. Full of all the bloatware that came with
your system when new.Usually you also have a program somewhere
that lets you make a series of recovery disks from that partition.
Some vendors will allow you to delete this partition after you make said
disks.

I have been trying over and over again and wasting hours trying to download critical updates for my Vista 32 with no luck. It just keeps saying "Checking for Updates." The same thing happened last month. Why isn't this working? So many wasted hours and anxiety. Is anyone else having same problem and what are you doing about it? MS should know about this problem. I've had problems downloading critical updates for Vista 32, Win 7 64 and Win 10 64.
Why is this continuing each month?
Can anyone help me with how to download the Vista 32 downloads PLEASE? I am 80 years old and as I said, wasting a lot of time and energy on this.

My computer that had been running the Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium since early 2009 had become an appliance:  It worked every time it was turned on and it handled every network transaction that came through my DSL line.  I had set the "Windows
Update" program to check for updates periodically, every month or so, and then to inform me when ever any update was available.  I could tell when the "Windows Update" program had been checking for updates, as the CPU usage went up to 100
percent with the used memory amount "sawtoothed" up and down for about 15 to 20 minutes.   The "Windows Update" then would tell me about the available updates and it would ask whether it should load any of those.

This  worked until about January 2016.  At that time, the "Windows Update" CPU usage would stay at 100 percent for more than an hour.  After that, it gradually got worse:  Around June 2016, it held the CPU at 100 percent usage
for about 14 hours.  In August 2016, the CPU is held at 100 percent usage by the "Windows Update" for more than 45 hours with no end in sight.  It did find some updates to load, but it would not load them as the CPU had no time to do that.

"Windows Update" is currently holding the CPU at 100 percent load  this every time the machine is booted up until all of the updates are loaded and it can not do this as the C... Read more

I'm running Win 7 Pre, 64bit, on an H77 mobo, i5 cpu, & Nvidia graphics. All of my drivers were up-to-date and the OS was up-to-date prior to installing the patch Tuesday updates for May 2016. The updates installed fine and my PC is working well except
for the following problem. The application Bittorent (version 7.9.5.) crashes when it's opened with a message like "bittorent cannot run, a crash dump has been created" and gives me the option to close program or relaunch.

I had the exact same problem on my laptop running Win 10 Pro with utorent.
Thus, I think that something in the May updates casued bittorent/utorent not to run.  I was able to deal with this by installing the most recent version of bittorent (7.9.7) which runs fine.
Has anyone else had this problem and more importantly, does anyone know what caused this? I suspect it was caused by an update dealing with drivers.
