Firefox window doesn't open, but firefox.exe process does.

Q: Firefox window doesn't open, but firefox.exe process does.

First time post.
Firefox.exe process invokes in Process Explorer, very briefly, if loaded directly from itís shortcut, and is gone, without opening a window at all. I see now that upon shutting down the Vidalia bundle (Tor/Privoxy), firefox.exe process does stay started in Process Explorer, but still no window. If instead firefox is called upon by another program, such as filehippo or avast, say, it invokes the firefox.exe process but the browser window is nowhere to be seen, as with directly invokeing without the Vidalia bundle.
ALT-Tab doesnít show a firefox window open, and right-clicking on the process to bring that window to the front yields a greyed out option in the pop-up menu for Ďwindowí. So thereís no window. Troubleshooting on my own, Iíve now struggled by with IE, like now, and updated a bunch of programs from filehippo, including firefox itself, to version 3.0.4 build 2008102919, but still no firefox window.

Windows itself has updated this morning. My fellow user, a housemate, has not any such problem with firefox when we switch users. His works fine.
Thereís a bunch of crud in my hijack log, and Iíll post that below.
I ran ccleaner this morning and cleaned my registry up, it needed it, but no solvie.
I did a full avast scan including archives, and found no viruses.
Iím running now with msconfig altered to bare startup stuff, to eliminate potential conflicts there.
What could be the trouble
I am standing by, scratching my head, waiting to pull my last hair out.

Hereís the skinny:

Preferred Solution: Firefox window doesn't open, but firefox.exe process does.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello. Ever since I downloaded Firefox 2.0, the process doesn't end after I close the browser. I end the process through the Task Manager and it just comes back. I tried going back to 1.5 and I still encountered this problem. Does anyone know a solution?

*Edit* This also happens with Opera, but not IE or K-Meleon

A:Firefox Process Doesn't End

I know that the Profile becoming locked can cause this kind of trouble in Firefox. If that is the case, the cure is to make sure all instances of Firefox in Task Manager are closed. Then delete the 'parent.lock' file in the Profiles directory. Restart Firefox. Maybe even try a whole new Profile if it's an old one.

The only other thing I've had that sometimes stops Firefox from closing properly, is when I've been looking at a site that uses a Java Applet. Sandboxie is useful for when that happens. It has an icon in the Systray that changes when Firefox is active within the Sandbox. If Firefox only appears to have closed, the Sandboxie icon would let me know that it is really still running in the background. I can then choose to close all sandboxed processes. That definitely closes Firefox.

Having said that, if you are getting the trouble in Opera too, I guess you ought to carry out all the usual scans for viruses and spyware. Also maybe some general disk maintenance. Empty out the temp files and do a defrag etc.

Hi techguy forums!
I have several problems with my computer, which is brand new and worked for about two weeks before developing these problems:
clicking on the firefox shortcuts or executable doens't load firefox, the hourglass shows for a second and nothing happens
i am getting endless popups on internet explorer (which i have been forced to use)
I cannot access certain websites on IE, it seems to be ones related to antivirus e.g. grisoft.com which redirects to windows live search (possible a phishing version)
and finally, avg, adaware and spybot S&D refuse to update over the internet connection

Yeah, that's basically my problem. Whenever I try to open a link in a new window (right click on link), or go to File>New Window, or click the Firefox icon in my desktop or Quick Launch toolbar (when one Firefox window is already open), nothing happens.

Sometimes when I first launch Firefox, I can't see the tabs or my bookmarks toolbar, and I have to close (through task manager) and relaunch it.

Windows XP SP2.

When I try to open Firefox, I get a message saying, Firefox is already in session, and is not responding. How do I close it, if I can't access it?

A:Firefox not responding;can't open another window

Welcome to TSF!
Open the task manager (right click on the task bar and select task manager) the under applications see if Firefox is listed. If so, select end task. If not look under processes and select firefox.exe and end process. Normally you can open another Firefox window when one is running so there may be another problem. Post back.

Whenever I click on a link that should be opened in a new page,Firefox neither opens a new page nor it does something(like openning it in a new tab).I'm using Firfox 1.0.7.Please Help me.

A:Firefox doesn't open a new page

Open external links in new windows or tabs

If another program wants to display a web page in the default browser, Firefox will reuse an existing window by default, which means that it will navigate from a page you might be reading. To stop this, Go to Tools > Options... (Edit > Preferences... under Linux and Mac OS X), select Advanced and click on Tabbed Browsing. Under "Open links from other applications in:", you can choose the alternative you prefer.

Hi, I found this>

Here is some help with the issue:

Though that may solve the problem, here is some info about trouble viewing Adobe files in your browser, this covers older versions of both IE and Acrobat Reader.

You may simply need a plugin or to change a setting in Firefox.

I'm trying to use Firefox exclusively but am finding that certain web pages that use java script to open a new window in an existing window don't work (I think).

Also, one offline application that I use has a java applet which controls the searching of the help pages doesn't work with Mozilla Firefox.

Is there any download extension that I can load to rectify the problem or is it something else?

A:Firefox doesn't open certian windows

Have you downloaded and installed Java Runtime Environment?http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/windows.html#JavaThis should solve the problem.I applaud your decision to avoid IE.Regards,John

I have a windows XP box that my kids use, so virus and trojan infections are pretty common, and I'm usually pretty good at getting them cleaned up, however I'm stuck right now.

One day the machine was working fine, the next morning Firefox wouldn't open. When I launch it, it appears in Task Manager, but quickly the CPU usage drops to zero, and a firefox window never appears on the computer. I can kill the process from Task manager with no problem

When I try running Internet Explorer, it opens up as it should, but it shows "connecting" on the tab. It never connects, clicking on the "X" to stop it doesn't stop it from trying to connect. Clicking on the tools opens up the drop down, but everything is grayed out, so I can't check the internet options to see if the settings are good.

I have CA antivirus on the machine, but clicking on the CA tray icon doesn't open CA up. Also, I noticed that quite a few of my tray icons weren't coming up when I start the computer.

I ran rkill, and it stopped a process called cfgmrn32.exe. I've read that process is part of the CA package. After rkill ran, and refreshed explorer, all of the previously missing tray icons came back, but CA still won't run, and I still have the problems with IE, and Firefox.

I installed, and ran mbam. It also can not access the internet. My internet connection is ethernet through a linksys router. The router is working as I Have access on my other ... Read more

I've just done a re-install of my Windows XP Pro but when I go to click a webpage link or an icon in Rocketdock, to open as a new page, it opens in Internet Explorer when what I want is Firefox.
How do I correct this?

Also, I was having a problem in that when it did open a new page it would open it as a tab not a full new page. I then played with Control Panel/Folder Options/File Types/URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol & URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol With Privacy to try and alter it to Firefox but to no effect.

To compound the issue, and even though I did a restore from prior to the above changes, I now have Rocketdock icons opening in IE but also replacing the same page address and not opening individual new pages.

To clarify I want all links and icons to open in Firefox and all Rocketdock icons to open in a new Firefox page.

Any help in clearing this matter up would be appreciated.

A:Links, Rocketdock etc doesn't open with Firefox plus other woes

To make Firefox 3 your default browser for opening links, proceed as follows:

Firefox > Tools > Options > General > Advanced

Near the bottom under System Defaults you?ll see the option: ?Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup?

Click on ?Check Now?

The question will appear: ?Firefox is not currently set as your default browser. Would you like to make it your default browser??

Click on ?Yes? > OK

When I click on a web-link in my Thunderbird email, it will open in my current Firefox window (let's say I have Techspot on screen).
Where can I change T'bird (or Firefox) settings, so that it opens in EITHER a new Firefox session (if not open), OR in a new tab (if open).

This only started happening since FF 1.0.4

On the same note, while creating a new thread, or answering a post in 'Advanced Mode', the cursor in the message-window is extremely nervous, probably caused by the 'jumping' smilies. True or false?
This is not the case while answering posts in regular mode.

A:Thunderbird email web-links open in current Firefox window

sounds like a Java issue.

I use Mozilla 1.7.8 with the mail uninstalled and thunderbird installed seperatly. I have no problems at all.

I had the exact same issue with Mozilla a few versions back, but they fixed it.

I've got a funny that I just can't get a handle on:
The user's PC has Firefox as default browser and Thunderbird is the default mail client. When she clicks on a 'mailto' link on a webpage, instead of Thunderbird opening a new mail window, the browser opens the google mail webpage. In IE it all works as it should. I've checked in Firefox's settings and Thunderbird is the corresponding application for mailto. I tried setting this explicitly to thunderbird.exe (using the 'browse' button) with no effect. Curious thing is that the user claims she hasn't even heard of google mail, let alone used it. I thought maybe google toolbar was hijacking the link, but it isn't even installed.
None of the other users has this problem.
All are using Firfox 3.0.7 with Windows XP SP3
Any ideas?

A:Solved: mailto link in Firefox doesn't open Thunderbird

Please try to uninstall and reintsall the mozilla filrefox.
and then try tol click on a "mailto" and even if you are getting the same issue then please let me know.

"Firefox doesn't know how to open this address because the protocall (call to) isn't associated with any program"
Specifically when composing emails in gmail in the new compose window, Firefox (multiple tab sessions sometimes) suddenly completely crashes closing exiting all tabs but keeping one new browser window open that has a gray screen and the above error message in the middle.  I recently started using a signature which just has my name and phone number below it.  I noticed when I get to the bottom of an email toward the signature below the 3 little dots, this is when the crash tends to happen, although at other times I'm a couple lines above and it still occurs.
Could this be a javascript error maybe?
It's starting to affect my work, because I send a lot of emails.  Any help is graciously appreciated.

I am having several problems with my computer. I am using XP Pro SP 2

1) I cannot open links from the Yahoo home page when using Firefox. I have no trouble with it when using Internet Explorer.

2) I have tried manually updating my AVG anti-virus software and I get an "The Connection with Update Server has Failed" message

3) I cannot run "REGEDIT". I tried this after reading on the message board that this could be a sign of a virus or other malware.

Any help would be appreciated.

A:AVG won't update, can't open Yahoo links using Firefox, regedit doesn't work

Some types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it.Before saving any of your security programs, rename them first. For example, before you save Malwarebytes', rename it to something like MBblah.exe and then click on Save and save it to your desktop. Same thing after you install it. Before running it, rename the main executable file first

Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.

If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run..Another work around is by not using the mouse to install it, Just use the arrow keys, tab, and enter keys. ~ Courtesy of boopmePlease download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. I was just curious if anybody has been receiving the same error message:

"Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."

I have been getting this on my laptop for a few weeks now, off and on, when I close Mozilla Firefox for whatever reason and try to reopen it immediately after. Usually, after receiving the error message I just wait a few seconds and try again and the browser opens just fine.

However, I now just found out that my cousin has been dealing with the same problem, only worse, when he uses his laptop at home. (different locations, different networks, different brands of laptop.) I witnessed first-hand that he had the same error message, only his did not go away, nor could we get his browser to open. He says this happens to him every time he closes Firefox and tries to reload.

We resolved this issue by opening the task manager and manually ending Mozilla under processes, not applications, since it was not on the applications list, but was on the processes list.

Tell me if you have been experiencing the same or similar issues with Mozilla Firefox. I am curious, because this is the only problem I have ever had with Firefox, other than the occasional browser crash.

I have a Lenovo N580 laptop. Last week, I had to do a factory reset (with help from Lenovo Tech Support) because of compatibility problems with new software from my employer and windows 8.1 which is actually worse than windows 8. The compatibility problems caused my screen to go black. When booting, the Lenovo logo appeared and I had a cursor, but nothing else accept a black screen. I tried suggestions found here and the Lenovo help forum, but none worked and the factory reset was the last resort. Now I am back to using Windows 8 (this was actually the second factory reset due to other problems caused by win 8.1).

Anyway, everything is working (for now) and I also have Classic Shell installed. HOWEVER, before this second factory reset, when I had multiple windows open, aero peek worked fine. Now, it doesn't. I followed earlier suggestions of right clicking the taskbar, then clicking Properties, but the box for "Use Peek ..." is dimmed (grayed out) so I cannot check it to enable aero peek.

I got used to this feature in Win 7 and was glad to see it in Win 8, but it is the only feature about Win 8 and 8.1 that I like. Thanks for your help.

I have portable Apps on my Flash drive and within the last couple days when I put my flash drive in my computer and it instantly starts FIREFOX.EXE in task manager and then when I go really click on it, it says "Another instance of firefox is already running. Please close other instances of firefox before opening Firefox Portable Apps". So I end it in task manager and about 2 seconds later it starts up again all by itself. The only way I can get it to work is if I'm fast enough to click it in the portable apps, but it then its shows 2 FIREFOX.EXE in my task manager. I thought it might have been the Firefox on my computer so I deleted it but this still happens. I can use my flash with my laptop or any other computer and it doesn't have this problem. I've read it could be malware thats not detectable becuase I have scanned my computer and flash drive with AVG, Norton, and CLAM and they found nothing. So can anyone please help me. Thanks much appreciated.

The subject explains everything in a nutshell (As it should) -- Firefox, when run from anywhere, shortcut, direct, command line, anywhere, won't start. At all.

Running any installation of Firefox (3.5.2, 3.5.6, 3.6 beta) from any folder, even on a new installation, just fails. Not even a process appears, no error messages, nothing.

It hangs constantly under Linux too (3.5.4). In both OS's, addons won't properly install and it kept saying there were new ones installed every time it was fun, even though none showed up. Some times it'd say 1 was, but it'd go up to 3 on some days. I should be seeing 80+ by now according to it, but only sew Web of Trust, NoScript and .NET framework helper (Disabled) before I lost access. Also, the update notes for addons started showing format code in them. I stopped updating addons with code showing.

Running firefox.exe -ProfileManager doesn't help, either.

I'm at a loss for what to do. I have no idea what could be causing these problems under both operating systems, let alone have a clue as to how to fix it. I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone could help. Opera scares me.

Extra thought: It seems I'm not the only one with this problem every person (at least ten) I've sent to www.getfirefox.com has had problems installing addons. Pressing "restart Firefox" just terminates the process, and upon starting it back up and checking the list, it still wants to restart to install them.

Ok so a little bit of a wierd one here.

Firefox Will not Start. No Error. No Window.
Firefox.exe - Cannot end process. Access Denied.

Step 1: Try to open firefox, nothing happens, no window, not error.
Step 2: Check Task Manager, Firefox.exe reads 3,994kb memory used.
Step 3: End Task. Successful. Process _does not_ go away.
Step 4: End Task. Failure with above message. Access Denied.

Using PsTools, PsList.exe shows this:
Name Pid Pri Thd Hnd Priv CPU Time Elapsed Time
firefox 1484 8 1 0 5232 0:00:00.234 1:34:19.159

firefox 748 8 1 0 5236 0:00:00.093 0:08:44.271

Notice, they have a handle of "0". They have all been "attempted" terminated but show to still be running.

Possible Relation:
Sometimes, explorer.exe will crash randomly (before firefox process problems). (usually near the start of using my computer, soon after first login within about 15 minutes). This may be unrelated to the problem, as i cannot tell since this occurrence is quite rare.

Sometimes when I try to open up internet explorer, seemingly nothing will happen. Then if I check in the task manager, it says that the process is running, but the actual Internet Explorer window itself doesn't open, and I can't figure out why it's doing that. Also, sometimes if I've had several IE windows open, it will freeze them or something, and I can't even open the task manager until I've closed most of them. Does anyone know why either of these things are happening? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

A:Process shows up, but IE doesn't open

There are three main reasons why an IE process starts and cannot be found ....

1) The process is running embedded in another application. This can only be fixed by using the task manager to kill ALL IE processes, then it should start when you run it again.

2) Your computer has two monitors and IE is running on the one that is switched off (happens to me a lot).

3) IE remembers where your multiple monitors were when it last ran and does not check where they are when it starts. If you change the orientation of your monitors (move monitor 2 from the right of monitor 1 to the top of monitor 1) and IE opens in the global space off to the right instead of above the monitor.

I have worked out a way to solve this, I just close Firefox go into the task manager and end the process "firefox.exe" and then start Firefox up again. Then it starts loading webpages pages like it should.

Does anyone have a suggestion that could help me with this?

Firefox may be the most popular browser around, as long as we leave out Internet Explorer, which probably isn't that fair, but, for some time, it has seemed to be lagging behind Google Chrome when it comes to new features and development momentum. Maybe Chrome's break-neck release cycle makes it look like it's adding new features faster, but Mozilla needs to start picking up the pace.

Firefox developers seem to be realizing this as well and the latest (more or less) official goals for the second quarter are a little more ambitious than usual. One feature that has developers talking is the goal of having at least partial support for Direct2D hardware acceleration on the Windows platform. This would enable Firefox to utilize the graphics card to render some of the content that should translate in a snappier experience for the users.

Just a test, to see if other software is stopping it from being launched. You should attempt to boot your machine into safe mode. If you can launch your programs then it would indicate a virus or firewall like program is stopping it from running.

If you do find that it launchs fine while in safe mode, you should run "MSCONFIG" and disable most if not all your startup list, boot the computer as normal and see if that fixes it, This will have disabled ALL statup software including your Antri virus so once done enable your AntriVirus again, do a test, if it fails its your AV, if its still successful its probly a virus and you should update and do a full scan.

Hi everyone. I am having trouble with Mozilla Firefox. Sometimes I'll close it out and try to reopen it and then it will stay that the process is still running. So I'll go to Task Manager and attempt to end the task but to no avail. It simply won't end! What do I do?

Hello everyone: No one seems to have come up with an answer for the
uninterruptible/zombie process in Firefox 19.0.2. I would like to know then, how to totally purge FF from my Ubuntu 10.04 system. I have already created a new profile. Also Reset to factory defaults, all to no avail. I had saved my Bookmarks before resetting, and now FF will not import the html file I had created. CPU % reaches 112 when I try! Can anyone help purge FF via the Terminal?? I have read that FF always leaves "something" behind, unless it is purged completely.

Also, can there be a connection between my grinding/failing Hdd and this FF problem? Thank you.

Before uninstalling completely, update to 20.0 and see what happens.

The next update to Firefox 3.6 will be a minor refresh with a twist. Essentially, Mozilla has taken the Out of Process Plugins feature from the next major iteration of the Firefox browser and integrated it into the version of Firefox released earlier this year. Early adopters are already free to test-drive Firefox 3.6 with OOPP via the codename Lorentz release, which was offered to testers almost a week ago. Firefox 3.6.4 will be the first stable version of the open source browser to feature Out of Process Plugins, which will also be included in future iterations of Firefox.

On my Toshiba laptop, Firefox (3.5.5) will stop loading new sites. I am able to access a few sites by hitting the back and forward buttons, but nothing past ~5 either way. Any kind of attempt to load something new (a streaming music app like Pandora) will not work. I can exit Firefox but cannot end the process (firefox.exe). The only way to restart Firefox is to restart the computer. I've reinstalled Firefox and started from scratch, but it hasn't worked.

Any suggestions?

Hi guys. I hope someone can help out.I couple of days ago, I was on a website (which I can't for the life of me remember anymore - no, it's not pr0n) when FF 3.5 suddenly crashed on me. I sent a crash report to Mozilla. Ever since the crash the firefox.exe process does not terminate when I close the browser. Additionally, I see high CPU usage when the browser is closed (and ONLY when the browser is closed).I thought it might have something to do with Mozilla's crash reporting tool working overtime, but then I noticed something strange: the same thing also happens to IE 8. I've read around and am now aware of a trojan called Poison Ivy which causes the symptoms I have described earlier, but a peek at the appropriate registry entries show no entries with StubPaths only.Earlier today I tried booting up through the Ultimate Boot CD and ran a barrage of virus scans from Avira, McAfee and Kaspersky to name a few, plus a few anti-spyware tools. All turned up nothing! So now I'm back to square 1. I would highly appreciate it if someone could go through my HiJackThis and DDS logs to help me determine if I am infected with something, or at least help me figure out what's causing my browser processes to stick around and consume CPU time. Here's my DDS log:DDS (Ver_09-06-26.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Mimiw and Chuchu at 17:36:44.29 on 2009/07/07Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18702 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_13Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.932.81.1033.18.2047.1436 [GMT 8:00]AV... I have managed to resolve this issue myself. What was causing the problem was not a malware infection as I suspected, but a faulty Java installation.

I always use Firefox. I must have picked up some sort of spyware, as my Google results started to redirect me to ad sites. I used Gooredfix.exe, and it seemed to fix the problem. Also have used Malwarebytes multiple times. Now, the Firefox process won't end when I close the program, and I can't kill it using Task Manager. I also can't open up Firefox after closing it down. I've tried removing Firefox completely (using Revo uninstaller) and reinstalling Firefox, but it makes no difference, still hangs up on me. I've tried everything on Firefox's help pages, and nothing makes a difference. Computer is also ridiculously slow on bootup and shutdown. Any ideas about what's going on? Thanks.

Lately I've noticed firefox running at system startup.
It looks like this in task manager when I open the (real?) firefox:

firefox.exe (10k something) (startup)
firefox.exe (116k) (the actual browser)

I've checked msconfig and there's no firefox on the startup list.

I've run multiple virus and malware programs and they don't seem to find anything.
Any tips about this is appreciated.

I can end the process but it will always return if I log off or reboot.

Okay, SO I just built my new computer and everything, but everytime I close Firefox, I have to Ctrl Alt Del End Process and its really annoying. I am using the Default Theme, with no addons. I thought AVG was doing something to mess it up, and that didn't even work when I unistalled it. I ran Spybot S&D and removed the crap, fixed selected items yadda yadda! Here is a HijackThis log too: Also You know when you goto websites, and there is the live chat button, and you can talk to the live chat operator, or you click on a picture/thumbnail to make it bigger. Well, I click them and nothing happens either. So I dont know wahts wrong. I cant even click pics to make them bigger.

Hello friends,

When my Windows Vista (x64) starts, an error message appears: settings.ini is being used by another process.... and Windows Sidebar doesn't open. Another symptoms are: Mozilla Firefox stop working, Google Chrome browser acting limited (search capabilities). I cannot save a file into documents when downloaded from ie, I cannot open pictures because it says I don't have permission to it. So far this is what I've noticed.

This happened after installing Windows 7 as dual boot and after accessing the C: folder on the Windows Vista from Windows 7, when I restarted to Vista I started getting this message. I'm not sure if it has something to do with the problem or not.

I noticed that when I turn off UAC User Account Control then I get my desktop back without seeing any more of these issues. I don't want to turn off the UAC though.

Please help, your wisdom will be greatly appreciated.

The concept of multi-process browsers is definitely not a new one with Google Chrome leading the way when it launched back in 2008. By around the middle of 2009, Mozilla shared details of its Electrolysis "e10s" project which, at the time, was in the middle of its first stage to get "basic code working, running simple testcase (sic) plugins and content tabs in a separate process."
Over six years later, Mozilla released its multi-process test into the Firefox Beta channel in the form of an A/B test. Approximately 15% of all users enrolled in the channel were to participate in the test. As of December 2015, Mozilla planned to deploy multi-process capability to the stable channel in Firefox 46 slated for release on April 19, 2016.
