New in 2018.1: Revamped Behavior Blocker user experience

Q: New in 2018.1: Revamped Behavior Blocker user experience

Jumping into the new year, we?re proud to announce the first significant update in our monthly release cycle that carries the major version ?2018?. The main goal for our development team this month was to streamline and improve the user experience of our most important defence wall against new and unknown malware threats: The Behavior Blocker.

When you open the main user interface of Emsisoft Anti-Malware, you?ll notice that we have merged the panel of the Application Rules with that of the Behavior Blocker. This was a logical move as the two are closely related to the same thing: Defining which of the active programs shall be monitored, are trustworthy, or should be prevented from starting up. Instead of manually creating rules for specific program paths, you can now easily double-click one of the active processes to define a new ?allow?, ?monitor? (default) or ?block? rule. The new application list also shows nicely which programs are excluded from monitoring as it integrates the Exclusions list too.

In the same set of improvements we?re launching a new feature to create application rule templates that professional users can now define via the Emsisoft Enterprise Console. In situations where a specific program needs to be excluded from protection across the entire network, or when a specific unwanted program needs to be blocked from running globally, it?s now an easy task to implement that with templates that also support wildcards and environment variables.Click to expand...

About the BB's advanced options discontinuation:

Fabian Wosar (lead dev) said:

Those "advanced rules" will not come back. The reason for that is that over the next months we are going to roll out a new generation of our behaviour blocker technology. Unlike the existing behaviour blocker, where we have specific triggers that cause certain alerts to appear, the new system is built on a more holistic model. That means, alerts are not triggered by one action happening under a specific combination of circumstances, but by a whole bunch of actions, that stretch across multiple areas. As a result a clear mapping between trigger and alert becomes impossibleClick to expand...

Preferred Solution: New in 2018.1: Revamped Behavior Blocker user experience

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

im currently looking for a STANDALONE behavior blocker, any suggestions?

Hi, i cant choose between EIS and Webroot

please help me guys

A:Webroot IS vs Emsisof IS [ Behavior Blocker ]

When it comes to a usable behavior blocker, nothing beats Emsisoft.

Webroot does behavioral analysis, but it does not have the same level of notification to the user as does Emsisoft; Webroot will take action on behalf of the user.

Emsisoft and Webroot operate differently.

You can ask @Umbra more about Webroot's behavioral analysis. It is done essentially in the cloud.

You have to be careful about Webroot's marketing infos - because when you read it you will be thinking one thing, but in actuality it means something else. Webroot does not clearly explain how their products actually work so when people read it there are often a lot of misunderstandings. It is not the user's fault that they misinterpret the marketing infos and documentation - because Webroot does a poor job in explaining their products - people often misunderstand what it actually does. This topic irks me to no end and I am constantly giving Webroot grief about it.

Emsisoft now parses Windows host processes to detect malicious scripts; this functionality is built-into the behavior blocker. This is one area in which Webroot has no real protection. They use the concept of trusted processes and scripts are essentially default-allow at default settings. Even at maximum settings scripts present a few problems for Webroot.

If you decide upon Webroot, then you really should use an anti-executable - such as AppGuard, NVT ERP or VooDooShield.

I combo Webroot and AppGuard.

That combo is ve... Read more

I was looking at Umbra's security configuration guide and noticed that he recommends that your antivirus should include a behavior blocker. I was wondering if anyone knows if 360 Total Security has a behavior blocker built in or not?

360 TS contains likely HIPS rather behaviour blocker from their flagship components. Actually you don't need a separate layer since it combines the necessary features. [except cleaning and boosters]

How does DeepGuard work
When DeepGuard detects a program attempting to make potentially harmful changes to the system, it allows the program to run in a safe-zone, unless you have specifically allowed or blocked the program.

In the safe-zone, the program cannot harm your computer. DeepGuard analyzes what changes the program tried to make, and based on this, decides how likely the program is to be malware .

DeepGuard automatically either allows or blocks the program, or asks you whether to allow or block the program, depending on:
how likely the program is to be malware , and
which action you have told DeepGuard to take when it detects a potentially harmful attempt to change the system.

I'm having a difficultly try to understand between HIPS, Behavior Blocker, Intrusion Detection System, and zero day protection. So I would appreciate if you guys can answer these questions below for me because I have no idea how to answer these with my rookie knowledge. Thanks, user102.

What is the differences between HIPS, Behavior Blocker, Intrusion Detection System, and zero day protection?

What is the pros and cons for each of them?

How does each one of them work when it engage unknown malicious applications?

Which one is strongest and which one is the weakest?

Which one do would you use? And why?

A:What is the difference between HIPS, Behavior Blocker, and Intrusion Detection System?

Very basic summary...

HIPS (Classical) monitors a whole range of actions - process creation, changes to file system, writes to registry, etc, etc, etc. What actions are monitored vary from HIPS design to HIPS design - and also there are some limitations on 64-bit systems because of Patch Guard. Classical HIPS requires the greatest amount of user input, knowledge and experience.

Behavior Blocker is different for different vendors. Some are HIPS-based, others are heuristics-based, others it seems are some type of combo.

Behavior Blocker in Emsisoft is really a HIPS that monitors for very specific actions based upon an algorithm - and not heuristics. This is done to greatly minimize the number of alerts - and subsequent user input.

Norton SONAR is an algorithm behavior blocker that evaluates hundreds of file characteristics and actions. It is more akin to file "profiling." Once again, the point being to minimize any type of user-based decision making.

Intrusion Detection System monitors network or system activities for malicious activities or policy violations. It is much more prevalent in Enterprise than Home solutions. Bitdefender being a notable exception. Here again the intent being to minimize alerts and automate decision making.

Zero-Day protection. There is no such thing. It is called this, but in reality is one or a combo of the above - or something completely different - cleverly marketed.

None of the above have a clear advantage over the ot... Read more

Can someone explain for me the difference between Behavior Blocker (awesome feature in Emsisoft Anti-Malware) and HIPS ? Which is stronger and better?

A:Can someone explain for me the difference between Behavior Blocker (Emsisoft Anti-Malware) & HIPS ?

behavior blocker completely blocks the application to be executed & harm the machine (if not false positive & obviously it detects negative aspects of application by it's behavior on your machine) while hips blocks any particular action of the application & asks you to either allow or disallow, like you can execute program but hips can block its access to internet & asks you if you want to allow that application to communicate with the network.

A:Any free security product that can be used alongside KAF to provide behavior blocker functionality?

You remember the 1-Yr free subscription that Sophos started to offer for the new Sophos Home Premium Beta? This package includes HMPA protection unlike the old Sophos AV.
You can disable the real-time File AV and Web filter in SHPB and keep the sig-less dynamic protection components including Exploit Mitigation, Cryptoguard, etc. ON so that you get HMPA features to work alongside Kaspersky Free.
I'd tried this method with Avast (BB disabled..) and I faced no notable issues. Since K Free has no dynamic protection, HMPA modules from SHPB should work well in complementation. This way you get behavior blocking, exploit protection, ransomware protection and rollback, cloud protection, identity protection, process protection etc. all covered by the combo.

Some have suggested to use KART with K Free. However, KART also has a File AV (associated with KSN) and the combo is not much recommended. The System Watcher found in KART is also not at par with the one found in KAV/KIS/KTS. Next, all you need is a Windows Firewall control.

As for Kaspersky, I have not used it since about 2009 when it was Kaspersky PURE so I cannot really comment. But as for Norton, it blocks unknown files it doesn't have a HIPS as such but any program being stupid of trying to access websites and files they shouldn't get blocked by SONAR their zero-day and zero-hour malware component.

Hi, I'm an undergrad at University of Illinois and I just moved into a new apartment. A couple days ago we subscribed to Insight High Speed internet and were given a motorola broadband modem hooked into a cable jack behind the TV. Since the three of us at my place use laptops we bought a wireless Belkin G Router. We set it up and it worked fine but then it started to have problems. What happens now is the computers will be connected fine but then pages will timeout. The network will still be connected and signal strength will say it is fine but no browsing can be done. Repairing the network does nothing. What we end up doing is just turning the modem off and on again, but it has gotten to the point where you have to do it several times an hour. There are a lot of other networks in my complex so I'm thinking it may be signal interference. I'm not an expert in this field but I have some sense of what I'm doing, but all the same I need help.

We need a way to be able to "switch user" on remote PCs connected to VPN for those rare times we need to logon with admin rights to uninstall software.  We use Remote Assistance most of the time to support off-site systems and it works for
everything except uninstalling since a UAC prompt will pause the RA session per Microsoft as expected behavior at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee844127%28v=ws.10%29.aspx.  If we RDP to a system that is logged onto VPN we can get logged
on, but during the process of "switch user" the VPN connection will drop.  Windows 7 appears to treat the RDP connection (while someone else is logged on) just like a regular "switch user" -- these both drop the VPN connection.
A fair number of articles say the VPN connection needs to have its properties configured to "Allow other people to use this connection" so that the connection will not drop.  Perhaps this worked years ago when Windows 7 was a little bit younger,
but it does NOT work today. Is there a solution to this issue that does not involved a 3rd party VPN solution?

I just finished building a new computer last week. It runs very well, and it scored a 7.8 out of 7.9 overall on the Windows User Experience Rating. The problem I am having is that I had to reinstall windows (I messed up the first installation) and now when I try to run the assessment again it always crashes on "Direct3D 10 Texture Load Assessment."

I have all the latest drivers and DirectX 11 installed. Any idea why it would do this when it did not on my previous Windows installation?

I was using MSI afterburner to overclock my GPU, but I confirmed that it is not the problem.

in this video Laura E. Hunter from Microsoft describes behavior analytics: https://youtu.be/hNZdboDvnuU?t=1251
She says that ATA will analyze the behavior in a domain for 21 days and declare this as normal behavior. After the 21 days ATA will report unusual user behavior based on the 21 days analysis.
I have two questions about this:
1. Can we see the progress of the analysis somewhere? I searched through the ATA-center but there is nothing. Is it possible to see it in some kind of logfile or the Mongo-DB?
2. We have started ATA with one DC. What happens if we add our other DCs later? Will the analysis recognize behavior from those, also when the 21 days are already over?
I did not find anything about this 21 days analys period in the documentation. I'm more than happy with a hint if I have overseen something there.
Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome

Check that your computer meets the minimum hardware requirements for running Aero:

• 1-gigahertz (GHz) 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

• 1 gigabyte (GB) of random access memory (RAM)

• 128-megabyte (MB) graphics card

If you meet the minimum requirements and it's still not working:

Make sure that the color is set to 32 bit, the monitor refresh rate is higher than 10 hertz, the theme is set to Windows Vista, the color scheme is set to Windows Aero, and window frame transparency is on.

To set the color to 32 bit
1. Open Display Settings by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, clicking Personalization, and then clicking Display Settings.

2. Under Colors, click‍ Highest (32 bit), and then click OK. (If you can't select 32 bit, check that your resolution is as high as possible, and then try again.)
To set the monitor refresh rate
1. Open Display Settings by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, clicking Personalization, and then clicking Display Settings.

2. Click Advanced Settings.

3. Click the Monitor tab, and then click a refresh rate that's higher than 10 hertz.

At this point all is forgiven and forgotten. Can you guys please please please, for the love of god, just give me some kind of a BIOS modification so i can run this screen at 60Hz, 1080. You can send it personally to me and i will agree to any possibility of hardware failure that "might" come from removing the 48Hz lock. As i said my warranty ended long ago and at this point i just wanna use this "gaming" laptop like the gods of gaming inteded- at 60Hz or more.

My computer Windows 10 Pro standard acount and KIS 2018 & Hitmanpro Alert & Voodoshield.
Is there any seting I need changing in any of these for make all work together so no problem I am having?I am need to exclude anything and create exceptions in any one? What are they? Thanks

PS:When I want to install Windows fresh what is order should I use to install these programes?Which is install first and last?

A:KIS 2018 & HMPA & VS setings

Few things to consider:

- DO NOT enable Kaspersky Trusted Apps Mode, because you already have VS
- In a fresh Windows install, install by order Kasperky, HitmanPro and Voodoshield
- It is recommended to whitelist Kaspersky folder in VS

Afterall, it is still overskill. HitmanProAlert is not needed at all - VS+Kaspersky make an amazing combo.
My personal suggestion: remove HitmanPro.Alert and add brain.exe

I've some how gotten the sspmyddom virus. When I opened my internet browser it gave me a pop-up telling me what I had gotten and that someone was trying to acces me through port 245. It has given me lots of pop-ups and ads, and bunches more problems. How can I get this off my computer?
Help is appreciated

A:sspMydoom.cih version 2018

Hi and welcome to TSG,

Please do this. Click here: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe
to download Hijack This.

It’s very important that you save it to its own folder on your hard drive, such as program files (not temporary files or the desktop), so that it can create proper back-ups and be able to restore them if necessary.

If you have anything unchecked in msconfig go to run – start – type msconfig and put a check beside every entry so that it all starts up.

Close all open windows and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished, the scan button will change to “Save Log”. Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad. Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET, most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed.
