I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Dear Technet Community!
Do we need to install KB4338823 before KB4345459 or is it enough to install only KB4345459 to a Windows 7 64 bit system, that has no 2018 July updates installed on it? With one word: does KB4345459 replace/supersede KB4338823? Can we say that KB4345459 is
the new July 2018 Windows 7 SP1 Security-only update?
According to package details in Microsoft Update Catalog, KB4345459 does not replace KB4338823, but searching on the net I have found other, opposite informations as well.
After all these, what is the truth?
Thank you very much for the help!

I use several computers that run Windows 7 and some are missing updates for the month of January and now February. In addition I have several "vanilla" VMs that use Windows 7 and they have the same issue.
I read a while back that Microsoft withheld the security rollup update for January (KB4056894) due to compatibility issues, and requires AV providers
to add a key to get the January update. That seems to be the same for February (KB4074598). My interpretation of MS guidance was that it would not be
an issue on computers without AV, or only running Windows Defender. I expected them to update without intervention but I work on several of them and as of today they are not updated.
I can manually add the key where I have administrative privileges, and that is working so far including in the VMs:
reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\QualityCompat /v cadca5fe-87d3-4b96-b7fb-a231484277cc /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
On computers running Windows 7 without an AV solution or with just Windows Defender the key won't be added so how are those computers supposed to get the security updates other than manually adding the key? I know how to apply the workaround but what about
those who don't, how are they supposed to get the security updates? The combined updates for January and February (which actually

supersedes the January one) look to be important. Even if there is some compatibility with branch prediction shouldn't MS just apply the rest of the updates... Read more

I started having internet access issues and discovered there was a HyperV adapter installed. I frequent that command screen often as habit. I have not rep'd MS for several years and don't keep up. I've read a bit now but in checking why this adapter is
being mounted and monitoring w/ wireshark I found that my system restores are gone before 2018.03.28 and my Defender was last UD'd 2018.03.24... Has anyone heard of this scenario? I've run the troublshooter and it stalls looking for restarts pending I've run
the defender update utility and it stalls for longer than I can wait, >30mins, and I've disabled the HyperV adapter. I now can stay connected to the internet but still don't don't have defender updates. I fear if I dig more with my level of misunderstanding
of win10 I would regret not asking here first.

on one of them and tried to connect, it showed this network connection is being blocked by network administrator. I tried a few methods but nothing worked:
1. I tried to remove and reinstall wireless nic drivers, scan hardware changes
2. I tried to show hidden devices from device manager, but didn't fix the issue
3. I tried run network troubleshooter, it said found problem but couldn't fix
4. I found three Microsoft virtual miniport adapters were created, tried remove them, but after reboot, them came back, wifi is still broken
5. I run gpupdate a few times, results are ok, no error
6. I tried reimage one of the laptops, after reimage, I noticed there are a lot updates were cancelled/failed, they are superseded from sccm by MS, the reimaged laptop

Greetings fellow Thinkpadders. I received my X1C6 about two weeks ago, and all is well except the fingerprint reader. I am patched up to date according to both Windows Update and Vantage, and that has included two BIOS updates since I first unboxed it. The fingerprint reader does not come back after a sleep or hibernate. That is, if I Restart, I can log in with my fingerprint -- the white LED is on and so forth. But if I suspend and resume, no white LED, and fingerprint doesn't work at Windows Logon -- I have to use my PIN or password. Vantage's hardware scan shows nothing wrong. Any hints or advice appreciated. Serial# PF0YSFED, Product# 20KH002KUS, BIOS N23ET37W 1.12, Windows 10.0.16299 (Build 16299)

This week at Mobile World Congress, Lenovo introduced their newest 2-in-1s: the new Yoga 730 (in 13-inch and 15-inch models) and the new 14-inch Flex 14. These new devices will start to become available at select retailers this April and range in price from $599-$899.6

Here?s five ways they make working on-the-go easier than ever:

#1: Take one with you ? they?re convertible and lighter than ever
The new Windows 10 convertibles are lighter than before, so you can easily take them with you wherever you go. Shedding 13 percent of its weight, the 15-inch Yoga 730 is just 1.89 kg (4.17 lbs) and 1.12 kg (2.47 lbs) for the even more compact 13-inch model. At 1.6 kg (3.53 lbs), the 14-inch Flex 14 won?t weigh your bag down, either ? it?s 11 percent thinner than before at just 17.6mm (0.69 in).

#2: Save time & effort with Cortana
Cortana[1] is available on your Yoga 730 to help you with everyday tasks by just using your voice[2]. Say ?Hey, Cortana,? and she?s ready to provide you with helpful information, check your calendar[3], give you a preview of your day across work and life, and take care of everyday tasks and reminders.

#3: Log in with your fingerprint with Windows Hello
Both the Yoga 730 and Flex 14 come with a built-in fingerprint reader, so you can quickly and easily log into your device with Windows Hello. When you?re on the go, feel at ease with Lenovo Vantage and its Wi-Fi monitoring security features. Lenovo Vantage combines seve... Read more

ESET Blog: Windows XP Security can be upheld past its end-of-life operating system

The goal of this white paper is to explain how to set up Microsoft Windows XP for use past Microsoft?s April 8, 2014 End of Life (EOL) date, until such time that it can be replaced by a newer, more secure operating system.

This white paper explains how to make a new installation if Windows XP more secure, but such advice should not be construed as guidance on how to make it as secure as newer versions of Windows. There is no way to do this other than to install a newer version of Windows.

No third-party security software, no matter how effective, can take the place of regular security updates provided by a vendor for its operating systems and applications. The goal of this paper is to explain how to keep Windows XP as secure as possible until it can be replaced.

It?s probably surprising to see a blog post discussing Windows XP?s security in 2018, except perhaps when mentioning the operating system in a historical context. Yet today, ESET is announcing the publication of a white paper on how to maintain this well past its end-of-life operating system.

To be clear, ESET is not advocating the use of Windows XP in this day and age.

Windows XP is an insecure and out-of-date operating system and we do not recommend using it when newer and more secure operating systems are available.

The paper itself is 47 pages in length; if that sounds like a lot of information, you may be right... Read more

A:ESET publishes the last Windows XP Security White Paper 2018

Well they did it because believe it or not, too many people are still using Windows XP. Why... well there are many reasons, poor hardware, etc.

I myself have commercial software and I was "forced" in a way to make a working version for Windows XP too, at first I refused but after I saw how many people were requesting it around the world I was like...

So I guess ESET want's to maintain a good reputation and relationship with Windows XP users even in 2018 and on going.

PS: I hate that OS, simply the worst, most insecure OS ever built.

I had real trouble finding a straight answer to the question of whether there were still problems upgrading to Windows 10 on the Yoga 2 Pro three years after it was released (I upgraded in August 2018). This post is just to add my positive experience so that others might find it when searching instead of having the usual problem that only negative experiences are reported. So, basically I was moving from Windows 8.1 64 bit to Windows 10 Build 17134 and the short version is that absolutely nothing bad happened. I did have all my firmware/drivers up-to-date, so I didn't even have to make any changes there. The only problem I have encounted is one that I already had, which is to do with Bluetooth cutting out maybe because of WLAN interference (seems to vary with intensity of use). So overall I am happy with the result. Especially as I successfully used the tool described in this ZDNet article to perform the Windows 10 upgrade for free even though officially it stopped being offered on this basis years ago: https://www.zdnet.com/article/heres-how-you-can-still-get-a-free-windows-10-upgrade/

Good day,
My computer was running relatively well up until a couple days ago. The only issue I had at the time was some low memory warnings due to only having 6GB of memory and most recent games and websites causing that to get used up quickly. I hadn't reinstalled
Windows in a while and figured that it was time for a freshening up. Following a fresh reinstall, and updating of all Windows Updates, my system began to experience random freezing and blue screen crashes for the Watchdog Violation error.
I have tried numerous strategies hardware and software wise.. including another fresh install of Windows. I tried an old GPU, I've scanned both my SSD hard disks using both CHKDSK and HDDScan sector scanning. I even cleaned out my computer case of any dust
to decrease operating temperatures as much as possible. During the crashes, there is no specific activity which triggers them other than there being some type of CPU or Video activity such as watching YouTube. I can get the crash to happen by running Prime95
stress testing but the timing of when it happens can vary from 10 minutes to nearly an hour. CPU temperatures never go above 81C as I have water cooling.

Hi,
Does anyone know how to solve this issue ? It's the 1st time I am having this issue (Laptop Toshiba Satellite Pro L300)
1) I updated first MS Essential : OK
2) I updated KB4103718 [2018-05 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64]. Message : "Update successfuly installed (but it's NOT ! See below). Restart your computer". Then I restarted my computer and...
Then, everything goes wrong:
1) Windows refuses to start (frozen on MS logo)=>
        a) I shut down my laptop manually (Power button) =>

        b) I restart my laptop and a dialog box recommends "startup repair" : I pressed Enter and then the system searches for "repairs" eternally... => I shut down the laptop manually again.
2) I re-re-started my computer and... Windows starts normally.
3) When I checked for the installed Update : "failed" appears... for KB4103718 [2018 roll up] but 2018-05 Security & quality Roll up for .NET FRAMEWORK (KB4099633) is installed for the 3rd time
4) I got a message to install KB4103718 AND KB4099633.
P.S.: A tec checked my laptop and fixed 2 issues on the Registry and System files, did a restor point to the 8th of May since the issue appeared last week. I got the Error message 0x8000ffff last week.

Thanking you in advance,

There is a lot of Microsoft spy ware included in certain updates nobody wants on their computers and if performing a Dist-Upgrade will embed them without an option to remove them later, then we would rather do the installation without them; and choose what
we want to upgrade later.
Examples of Windows 7 Native Telemetry/Spyware updates and the necessary steps to harden your PC against Microsoft (TM) spy ware:

For windows 10 users, I recommend blackbird www.getblackbird.net/ , (also works on windows 7) O&O Shutup 10 https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10 , and Spybot-Anti-beacon https://www.safer-networking.org/spybot-anti-beacon/
For windows 7, Ancile, Blackbird, Spybot Anti-Beacon

Also make sure your Persistent routes is clean under TCPIP parameters, I had 329 embedded entries the majority of which were pointing directly to Microsoft servers.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Tcpip\Parameters\PersistentRoutes]

Will an in-place dist upgrade of a Windows/OS with Updates included embed updates in such a way they cannot be uninstalled later?

For the past day windows wants to install the same 4 updates over and over, I have windows update set to download and let me choose when to install.

I can't understand why I even need them, as I uninstalled net framework.

Notice how the update at 8:17 AM., KB2656368, is the same as one of the 4 updates installed at 7:47 PM.
Windows wants to install the same four kb files again.
How do I stop this?

A:Windows 7 updates same for updates every time it checks for updates

See if you can System Restore to before Net Framework 4 was installed and then Hide it when it is again offered in Updates.

But be aware that some programs will need it and may not prompt you of this leaving you to guess why they are not installing or performing correctly. For this reason I always install it.

So you might want to reinstall it using its standalone installer since it may not have uninstalled correctly anyway.

HI
KB3088195 and KB3102939 were removed after installing 2018-05 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 2012 for x64 based Systems (KB4103730). These two removed patches are not listed in WSUS as being superseded, nor in the list of superseded patches
by KB4103730. Was removal of these two patches a fluke or where they left out of the documentation?

My Dell laptop has not been able to install the newest 2018 updates for Windows 7. A total of 8 fail to install every night. I have turned off my McAfee firewall to reinstall - failure. I have tried installing the 6 lesser important &
smaller updates (5 downloaded, 1 failure) only to find that when laptop was restarted all failed to install. System reverted. What to do now? I am NOT a techie and don't want to fiddle around with folders that I am not famiiar with.
