Can't log into Windows 7. Keeps telling me my password is in correct

Q: Can't log into Windows 7. Keeps telling me my password is in correct

Hi all,

I got a problem I can't seem to fix. I checked online for help to no avail.

Here's my problem:

I boot my Dell (windows 7 Professional) and when the welcome screen appears all I get is "password is incorrect'"

There are no usernames present nor administrator. When I click on the "ok" underneath the password is incorrect, It brings up my username, but when I enter my password it says it's incorrect (it's not). I can't log in from safe mode, nor will system restore fix the problem.

Since this is an old work computer I was never given the disc that could solve this problem.

Anyone have any idea of what is wrong and how it can be fixed?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, so I've just found an old laptop I've had hoarded with windows 8 on it. Everything on it is super outdated, and I noticed it had my account on it which was basically my Microsoft account. I tried to sign in, but it says it's incorrect. I know my
password, and I've changed it over the years, but since the laptop is so old, it wants me to put in the last password I used to sign in on it. Problem is that I had so any password changed and I cannot remember what password I used. It will not let me use
my new password, because it says it's incorrect. Any way to fix this?

I can't remember fully now but I was having a problem with setting up a schedule in Macrium Reflect, it kept failing to accept my Win 10 password. I went to 'netplwiz' thinking I could just login without a password but then after I rebooted I could only get to the win 10 login screen, the one after the pretty picture. It seems there is a scheduling problem with Reflect after the anniversary update and I haven't been able to use it since.

I reset my Windows password but that fails as well so it seems to me that I somehow need to get back into 'netplwiz' again in order to remove the tick 'Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer' but I don't know how to get to it! I found this very complicated to understand as it seems to worded back to front, but I was told to add the tick in order NOT to have to log in!

As I downloaded the update and installed it I don't have an ISO, but assuming there is an ISO (anniversary build) can I create one on this spare laptop and use it on the one I can't get into ? That's assuming it will help me to overcome the login problem?

Thanks for any assistance.

Hello,  newbee here.   Looking for some help with a gateway laptop.  Had a shutdown prompt to update.  Hit that fun button to shut down and came back to a usless laptop.  The computer seems to fire up correctly.  It takes me to the password screen and waits for my input.  When I enter the correct password the system sends message that "you can't sign in to your PC right now.  Go to account.live.com to fix the problem, or try the last password you used on this PC. "

Help.  I do not have any restore disc for this unit.  Is there a way into safe mode to disable the password?  or can I restore to before the last update?  I need past this screen to try anything though.

Thanks for the help

A:windows update from 8 to 8.1 will not allow access with correct password?

The error that you've received is saying that (most likely) you're not entering the right password.
Go to account.live.com and get them to reset your password.

This may help to reset the system (and will wipe everything off the system):
- at the login screen, click on the icon in the lower right
- hold down the "Shift" key and then click on "Restart"
- continue to hold the "Shift" key until the system boots into the recovery mode
- Once in recovery mode, click on "Troubleshoot", then of "Reset my PC" (these may not be the exact words)

Worst case, contact Gateway for a set of recovery disks.
Here's a page that I wrote back in 2012 that has instructions:  http://www.carrona.org/recdisc.html#gateway

I recently set a password for my computer. I locked my computer and typed it in (so I know for a fact that its right). But when I started my PC this morning it automatically brings me to a screen saying 'User name and password is incorrect'. I press OK and re-enter my password (WHICH IS 100% CORRECT) it says it's wrong.

So when my computer is starting up I pressed F8 and went into System repair. It brings me to a screen to enter a password, I type the EXACT same password as before and it lets me in. I am trying to log into my user account 'Tyquan' when my PC starts up AND on the system repair.

I only have one account which is administrator, I never set a password when configuring my windows for the first time, and even if I did it would be one of 3 passwords (I tried them all and all stupid variations of them that they could be)

I'm just confused as to why my computer is rejecting my password in one screen but accepting it in another.

A:Windows 7 suddenly rejecting correct password.

Hello Tyquann, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you set Windows to automatically sign in to the user account that you changed the password for, then that could be the issue. Netplwiz will still use your old password unless you updated it in netplwiz by starting over and setting it up again below.

Hope this helps,

Hello everyone,
the other day I shutdown my computer, then upon restarting it - I entered my password at the login screen as I always do.

Now I know for a fact it is the right password. And the strange thing is, when I get the error (Wrong username or password) it doesn't happen immediately, it goes like it's about to start windows, then comes back to the error.

Now I have bypassed it somehow by pure will, by entering the password over and over again.
And when I was finally logged in, I did a system restore to see if that would work. But upon restarting it brought me back to the login, and the problem remains trying to get back in again.

Also, I went and set the setting to bypass the password, by unchecking it in the control panel.

So now when restarting my computer, it goes automatically to the error instead of the login screen. So before even typing the password, it just presents the error right off the bat.
This is all very strange, any help is appreciated.

My wife's laptop rebooted automatically to apply a Windows 7 automatic update and now it says the password is incorrect.

She has had the same password for several years and uses it every day. It is her middle name so she has not forgotten it and it does not use capitals. Caps Lock is defintely off (although we have tried it with it on also!).

We do not have a password boot disk.

I have read about password recovey tools but logically they would not help as we know the password anyway.

Why would the password suddenly be rejected after the update?
How do we get the computer to work again?

Neither of us are very computer literate, so I hope someone can help (in simple English )

A:Correct password rejected after automatic Windows update

Try starting in Safe Mode and see if you can enter the password and have it work there. If so, go into Start Menu->Control Panel->User Accounts->Change your password-> and choose a temporary password for now (make sure it is something you will remember). Restart Windows and see if you can login with the new password.

After multiple Hibernation events: windows login fails to recognize correct password

After repeatedly hibernating the computer for about a week or 2, it will eventually refuse to recognize legitimate password and fail to login, yielding "did you forget your password" message.

IF I shut down the computer (thus losing all open windows) and reboot, the password works fine. I have repeatedly changed passwords, but this does not help.

Windows XP Hibernate feature has never worked properly and that is why Windows defaults with this feature off and hidden from newbies. I love the concept but have always found it to be buggy on every machine it has been on. Periodic shutdown and restart is needed to flush memory, but this is the first time I have seen this particular issue.

It seems to occur when Hibernation fails to stay off and the computer immediately re-awakens when hibernate shutdown is complete. In other words, unit will not stay in Hibernation but cycles back on, unless power cord is pulled. When power is returned, computer may immediately boot up.

This problem began on a newly assembled computer with fresh XP SP2 install. (AMD dual core 6000; 2GB RAM; Asus M2N-E motherboard). All updates done, including XP's problem with dealing with 1GB of RAM and more.

Internet usage is safe and clean on main sites only. I Use AVAST antivirus, Spybot, Ad-Aware. I used a SmitfraudFix as I thought I had an infection.

Gee, I am disapointed that no one was able to suggest something here. I did my part by helping others, so what's the prob?

Because this involves immediate rebooting of the computer(hardware?) AND a software issue of not recognizing password, I am leaning to CPU issue. I have seen some weird issues in past that were CPU. I do not have a tester CPU; I do have anothe MB and may try that.

I have a Windows 10 laptop that will not let me login. I type in the password and it says to reset it through my Microsoft account. I can log into my Microsoft account with the same password just fine. I tried restoring it to a previous point restore point and it asks for the password to proceed. I use the same password and it lets me do a restore point back but that did not make a difference. I booted into command prompt which requires the password as well and net user does not show any accounts. I created a new account with the net user commands and rebooted and it does not give me an option to change to the other account in the lower left like it usually does.

It is the strangest thing because Windows knows the username and password because it asks for it for all the advanced startup options but will not let me log into the machine. Does anyone have any other ideas before I backup data and reset the machine?

Why the specified network password is not correct? My password is CORRECT!! It's a good password and the only password used on these computers. When I try to network from my win 10 laptop to win 10 desktop I get this error message? I went to Control Panel Networking and troubleshooted and it said I didn't have permission to network. Yet I had no trouble when I was working the same computers in win 8.1 and win 7. There has been no change in networking procedure in win 10 which worked well in win 7 and 8.1.

Are you sure it didn't say username OR password?

The username is computername\username. If you are not entering it like this, try this way.

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me with a password program? I have an Acer Aspire One netbook running on Windows 7 starter and have just logged on as normal with my password. Whilst on there, it wanted to do a Windows update so I did this, the netbook shut down, rebooted and asked for my password again and then nothing?? I put in the same password I have used for months and the same one that I put in less than 30 mins prior to the update but it says its incorrect?

I have tried pressing the F8 button and booting in safe mode etc but all options I choose want a password and I can't give one anymore?

Any ideas how to get back in there?

Thank you!!!

But indeed, IT IS CORRECT.  I just installed Windows 7 RC for evaluation.  So far, I have NOT been able to connect to any domains.  I am logged into the machine as the administrator......found out how to do that.  When I try to map a network drive, using Reconnect at logon, and Connect using different credentials, I keep getting the "specified network password is not correct".  I have used several other "working accounts" with the "correct passwords" of each of them, and it's always the same thing!!  This is frustrating!!   I will NOT....EVER....go to Vista or Windows 7 unless Microsoft makes a way for problems like this to be "not quite so problematic".  I've NEVER had a problem mapping anything with Windows XP.  It's not a wonder that people want to buy new machines with XP professional on them.  I have another machine with Vista Home Premium on it, and I tried to just format it and install XP instead, and it blue screens every time.  I can't STAND Vista or 7 RC so far.  Somebody else MUST have had to deal with this mapping problem. Any help from any of you experts?  If I can make this mapping thing work, there MAY be a chance for Windows in the future. Thanks! Frustrated to the max.

Yesterday my son was on my windows xp, he's not a kid, he's 25. Let me say first on my computer (I have XP Pro). I not know the stupidity of that. The real sad, and depressing thing about this is that just four months ago my brother rebuilt me a decent computer cause he's a computer engineer. I just finished putting together a new computer using an ASUS B150M-A D3 motherboard and Windows 7 64-bit OS at the SP1 level. I want to connect it to my home network. I have a Netgear router that supports 4 wired Ethernet connections and 8 wireless connections. I also have 3 ROKU players, one Logitech Revue box, a Kindle Fire tablet, a laptop computer, and a printer connected wirelessly. The printer is also connected directly to the desktop computer via a USB cable. At the moment, only the ROKU players and Revue box are active on the wireless.

I plugged the new computer into the back of the router with a wired connection and found that I could access the internet without any problem. I then opened the Networking section of Windows 7 and attempted to join the Homegroup. When requested, I entered the Password that I use for all of the wireless devices in the Homegroup. I received an error message telling me that the password was not correct. I went to the original desktop computer, opened the Networking section and then selected "Show or Print Password". Not sure if X-Marks will affect this but try going into Tools -> Options -> Security Tab -> Saved Passwords. Then select the option to show saved passwords. Find the entries that have the wrong passwords and delete the entry for that site (not Delete All). The next time your visit the site, you should be prompted for the password and Firefox should ask you if you want to save the password. You may want to test this on one site first.

Computer works on XP Home, service pack 2, has LAN network plus wireless connection, and two user accounts. We switched the location of the laptop, carried it upstairs and plugged it in. We can now connect to the internet, but when we tried to set up outlook express for a new e-mail account, the password was rejected. It is correct - tried it out on another computer and on the other account! Now, as mentioned before, this laptop has two accounts, one of which has all the programs and settings, and the second one which has never been used until now and only has the basics, and on which we tried to set up the e-mail account. Not only is the password rejected by outlook express, it was also rejected when we tried to access the e-mail account on the web - there, too, the password was rejected. However, it was NOT rejected on the other "master" account - it worked just fine! Is something wrong with the LAN settings of the "basic" account? Both accounts have got administrative rights.

Suggestions, anyone?

My wife's company recently moved to Windows 7 Professional. One issue that I'm currently having is that when her laptop is locked, we cannot unlock it. I assume this is because it is at home and not attached to the domain. However, it was not attached to the domain when we logged into it, was never on the domain while it was logged into, and was not on the domain when it locked. We type the correct password in, but it keeps saying "the user name or password is incorrect". There is no red button in the bottom right corner to allow for restarting the computer or shutting it down when it is locked. The only way to restart the machine is to hold down the power button and force it off, then it wants to check the disks when it comes back on. After forcefully restarting it, we are able to log on using the password even though we are not connected to the domain. It works OK if she logs off when she's through using it (logon works, unlocking doesn't), but if she locks it, hibernates, puts it into standby, or leaves it unattended too long, we're up the creek. The only options on the lock screen are EASE OF ACCESS and OTHER CREDENTIALS. Clicking OTHER CREDENTIALS shows her locked account and INSERT A SMART CARD. Why will it not unlock with the correct password, but it will accept the password for the initial login? Setting it to not require a password when it wakes up probably isn't feasible in her workplace. TIA

A:Win 7 Will Not Unlock With Correct Password When Not Connected To Domain

Sounds like this policy is enabled:
Interactive logon: Require Domain Controller authentication to unlock workstation.

This can be disabled, it will still require a password, but will allow it to use cached credentials, same as logging in after rebooting.

Click Start, type secpol.msc, press Enter
Navigate to Security Settings | Local Policies | Security Options
See if you can change that policy to disabled. If this is set by a Domain Group Policy, then that policy will need to be changed by the company. They may need to create a separate OU for people who take PCs home to do work, then they can still keep that policy for computers in the office.

Also sounds like this policy is disabled, which would explain why the shutdown option isn't present from the Lock screen:
Shutdown: Allow system to be shut down without having to log on

As the title says. I was entering my password. It is just numbers and I tried it with caps lock on and off. It was the correct password. I tried multiple times.

I had to reset my computer.

Is that normal? Could I have a virus? My computer has been acting 'weird' but not like it has a virus. I have used malwarebytes and avg. Both do not find anything.

Are you sure you were typing it in correctly? I've done the same thing and swore I was typing in the correct user name and password and got that error message...I had to slow down my fingers typing in password and sure enough I had access.

Yes..you could very well have a Virus or malware of some type which can cause this type of problem. Personally I would switch to MSE for AV and use more than just malwarebytes for malware. I use 4 and they find something that the others didn't catch. Here are the 4 I use.

Alright, decided to try bitlocker on the windows 7 7100 rc build. motherboard apparently is not TPM compliant. I wanted to encrypt my external 1tb sata > usb drive. Bitlocker took a REALLY long time to encrypt it, i honestly dont remember seeing the "completed" dialog. Went to access the drive, bitlocker popped up and asked for the password. typed the password in incorrectly by mistake, told me it was wrong. Slowly typed the correct password in, and as soon as i hit enter it freezes the window. External drive status light says that the drive is being accessed constantly so i let it go overnight, woke up, still frozen. Took HD out of shell, put internally into pc, booted into windows, tried typing password in again, frozen once again. Tried on my laptop through external again, still freezes. I cannot get into any repair tool to try and diagnose this issue as windows sees this drive as "a working bitlocked HD"I honestly dont know what else to do here, there is a LOT of data on there i want to keep, and i have no way of accessing it. Any suggestions?P.S. Trying to download either bitlocker repair tool or preperation tool from the microsoft site says that "the update is not applicable to your computer" and will not allow me to run, download, do anything with them (verified/activated windows 7 install)

I encrypted several USB drives, using the same password for all. A few weeks ago I tried opening one, using what I know to be the correct password, and it was rejected. The same problem also occurred with all the others. Additionally when I plug in the USB drive an icon does not appear on the desktop as it did before, and still does for an unencrypted drive.

I tried running the disk utility and it says everything is fine. I have tried both USB ports also. I was also told to run the system log but the content doesn't tell me anything I understand.

I have a Macbook Air and am running OSX 10.10.

Hi,
Correct bitlocker password & RecoveryKey Can't unlock my drive
I have 2 hard drive in my computer, 1st one runs OS, 2nd one using bitlocker to encrypt and works fine until........... I re-installed the OS on the 1st Drive (didn't touch 2nd drive at all, the only thing is that during the installation, I manually turned
off the power once due to the computer locks up.)
Now when I try to open my 2nd hard drive typing bitlocker password, always says: wrong password.
Then I was trying to use the Recovery Key to unlock, but always say:  the key does not match the drive. -- I am pertty sure this key is for this drive.
Is there anything else I can try? Or any more information needed to help me get my data back?
Thanks

Hi

The first thing i will say is that i don't speak english very well, so i apologize if i wrote something wrong (my native language is spanish).

My problem is very critical, i'll try to be brief. I had Windows 10 Pro x64 on my PC (not a notebook) since July 2015. Everything was going good, no problem with anything. I updated Windows everyday. Everything ok. I had two partitions (C: & D. The first one with the OS, and the second only with my personal files (familiar photos, videos, music, work files, etc), aprox. 172gb. ironically, to protect my information, i used Bitlocker encryption in that partition. Everything works. I unlocked everyday that partition with my password, and there was no problem. But, a damn day, i made a system restauration (i don't know what's called in english, but is that option that returns to a point of restauration to a few days ago). Well... restauratiuon had a critical fail, and windows died.

Well... the next step was make a formatting to the hard disk, but first backup my information. And there was the real problem. I took my internal hard disk, and i connected to the notebook of a friend that is technical in computers. But password doesn't work. It said "password incorrect", so the next step was use the recovery password of 48 digits, but it neither work. Same thing happened in other PC's. Ironically, C: (without Bitlocker) partition goes good. Fast and without errors.

And well... I spent more that two months without my compute... Read more

Hi there,
Recently my laptop broke so I am now currently borrowing a computer from my parents. I have installed a new ASUS PCE-N13 network adapter. My problem is this: The network adapter easily detects my wireless router (full strength) so I click connect and it asks me for my p/w. I type the p/w in and my computer instantly tells me it is wrong. I know full well the p/w is right because I live with 2 other people and they both have laptops which connect no problem.
Any help would be great and much appreciated as to why this is happening!

After restarting my Windows 7 PC(home pro) my primary internet network wouldn't sign in; I was/am getting only access through my wifi extender. I get 1 of 2 messages, my passphrase or code is not correct(I've made sure i'm typing it correctly), or I get
"the settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements for this network".

I have seen a few disscussions on this, but it's mostly for vista so i'm not able to find the correct path to find the network adapters. I have removed the network from the network sharing center but that didn't help. I have verified that the 2 networks(wifi
and extender) security settings are the same. My childerens laptops and my wifes/my phones are all able to connect to the primary wifi network also using the password I'm trying to use.

Dlsoroan,You will need to have a password reset disk or reinstall Windows. Dell has no generic passwords that will help you get into Windows. You can also search the internet for password recovery software. Dell can only help with resetting bios passwords.

I have updated my XP-Pro. windows numerous times and I still get warnings that I have to update. Then I get a notice that some of the updates didn't get accepted. What's with this??? Is there some key in my OS that I need to turn on or off?? It is really starting to aggravate me when the the little balloon pops up telling me I'm not up to date. Thanks. Big Oz

A:Can't get windows to stop telling me I have updates.

I have updated my XP-ProWhat do you mean updated? The OS or Windows updates? There are updates that are required/necessary to install while there are also optional updates that sometimes come with any currently available updates. This feature I think is more evident on Vista and Win 7.If you want to hide the security alert warnings :1.Right-click your Taskbar and choose Properties2.On the Taskbar tab, click Customize...3.On the Current/Past items, look for the balloon icon and click to highlight.4.Hide when inactive, Always Hide, Always Show are your choices then click Ok. 5.Make sure to hit Apply.Do not TURN OFF your Windows Update as a last suggestion. This can be configured by your Control Panel, Automatic Updates.

For some odd reason WD keeps telling me I need to do a scan (it's in orange in WD) even though I do a scan everyday via the Task Scheduler. After any kind of scan it resets itself (I don't need to scan, green in color). Some time period later it tells me a scan is needed.

Is there some option that controls how often WD tells you to do a scan? Any ideas on this will be appreciated.

This started happening about a week or so ago. I don't have anything running on my system that IMO is doing this.

How exactly do you do that? Have you created your own task? If so, export and attach the XML.

WD scans during periods of system inactivity. It's implemented as a part of automatic maintenance (search tutorials here). Unless your PC runs 24x7 without entering the inactivity state, scans are taken care of and there's no need to schedule your own scans, given you didn't mess with automatic maintenance in task scheduler.

Why did Windows 7 make the 100MB "System Reserved" partition on my first hard drive only
then install windows on second hard drive? I clearly cleaned both HDD
and used Disk 0 for Windows 7 installation but he forces Windows 7 install on Disk 1 no mater what,
maybe this must be related to how Laptop hardware was designed? (Acer Aspire 7750G)

Realy have no clue, what matters is that it works like any other Windows 7 with no single probs,
just wanted your opinion on this matter basicaly, thanks in advance.

A:While telling Windows 7 to install on Disk 0

Hello Otase,

Not sure unless you mistakenly selected Disk 1 to install to instead somehow. It'll be fine though.

I like to remove all hard drives except the drive that I'm installing Windows on before starting the installation to avoid any potential issues like this.

I have a weird problem. In Vista Ultimate 32 bit swedish.
The Windows Update notification is telling me there are updates:
6 important ones and 3 optional.
But When I click on the 6 important one link to see what they are, nothing shows.
And nothing in the 3 optional tab.

Have Microsoft updated the Vista Windows Update interface - didn't have tabs before.

How can I see my updates? I can't update without knowing what they are.
