Microsoft's latest Spectre Patch killing all my machines!!

Q: Microsoft's latest Spectre Patch killing all my machines!!

Hi, I have a mixture of Windows 7 and Windows 10 machines on my work network all Intel. Today they started to install the Microsoft Spectre Patch for Windows 7 KB4056894 and
Windows 10 KB4056892. All the computers the have installed on sart to display that the copy of Windows is not Genuine Windows, I reboot them and then it goes to the Windows Startup repair and t can repair the computer at all. Also the Reset feature in Windows
10 won't even reset. I've had to disable Microsoft Updates via GPO, but even when I did that it still installed! I've had to disable the Microsoft Update Service using GPO also to counteract this. It's turning in to nightmare, does any one have experience
with this as I need to advice so I don't has to go to all machines around my sites and re-image them. All help would be most appreciated.
Thanks

Preferred Solution: Microsoft's latest Spectre Patch killing all my machines!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

After applying KB4056894 to my windows 7 laptop, visual studio 2010 stopped working, manifesting all sorts of subtle bugs which did not go away even after fully repairing Visual Studio 2010.  In addition, the import settings operation returns fourteen
errors consistently, also new with KB4056894.  I just restored from a Nov 2017 system image and now everything is stable and functional again.
I have now blocked all future windows 7 updates, which is fine with me.  These updates always consumed a lot of time and I'll be happy to go without them starting now.
I also have windows 10 installed on the same laptop which I stopped using several months ago, in favor of Windows 7 due to the latest Windows 10 being such a horrible operating system.  It's even worse than Windows 8.  Sorry to say this, but it's
true!
At least in windows 7 all control panel settings reside in one control panel! I believe that Microsoft has been working on the new metro/universal app for settings since 2011 starting in windows 8!  It's now 2018 and these settings are still split between
the UWP settings app and the desktop control panel.  I thought I took a lot of time to get things done, however Microsoft takes the cake when it comes to taking time to get things done.
If my tone seems to be a bit snotty, it is, but it is upsetting to hear talk of AI and Neural Networks when the CPU architecture and windows OS seems to have been neglected to such a great ext... Read more

I need some major help with the latest Windows Update (the set of patches that came out this Tuesday to help with the security issues), I think it is causing issues for my laptop PC. I'm not computer illiterate but I'mdefinitely nothing more than a beginner and this is starting to make me panic a little ^_^;

My laptop has been having major Startup and boot issues since the update. My laptop freezes and goes to a white-grey screen. The computer does start up - ie: the screen comes on (white screen, unless I am lucky enough to get a boot screen for a moment) the fans run, but it takes several attempts at turning it on and off again, and hitting either F12 or F8 (still not sure which one is the one that works) to get to a screen that allows me to repair the Startup and go back to a retore point. The last time this happened it also beeped at me however I would not be able to tell you what the code sounded like (I...panicked somewhat).

However, the restore point was made just after Windows downloaded the updates onto my comouter (I had automatic updates on), and I cannot shut down without my computer wanting to install the updates. So I'm stuck in an endless cycle of downloading these updates, then being forced to restore.

Can anyone help with either finding a way to stop my laptop installing these updates, or does anyone know a way to troubleshoot the updates themselves?

Hey All,
Walked into complete chaos today at the office...seems like a Microsoft patch that was automatically updated on my users machines completely messed up their video settings.
The Dell GX270s would all boot up but then go blank after XP logo screen. As far as I can figure out, some new driver update threw the integrated Intel video driver out of whack causing it to use a resolution that the crt monitors can't handle. So far I have had to reinstall the intel driver and overwrite what was automatically installed.

Anyone else run into this today?

Dan

Yep, here too. Intel chipset video cards. So far I've gotten two calls, fixed one with a system restore. Other one I'm waiting for a callback.

Haven't had any problems with Windows Update for a looooong time....guess it's inevitable to have glitches. <sigh>

Unauthorized Patch For Microsoft WMF Bug Sparks Controversy

Sober worm may hit tomorrow, but businesses are more concerned about the WFM vulnerability and Microsoft's inability to produce a patch this week. Some are choosing an alternative that could lead to other problems.

By Larry Greenemeier
InformationWeek

Concerns over the lack of a Microsoft-issued patch have pushed the Windows Metafile/Zero-Day bug to top of mind, surpassing even tomorrow's much-anticipated Sober worm attack.

The lag time between the Dec. 27 discovery of the WMF vulnerability and Microsoft's planned Jan. 10 patch availability has forced IT security departments to find alternative means for protecting their systems and prompted a non-Microsoft developer to create a patch that others could use.

All of this serves to damage Microsoft's reputation as a company that can secure its own products—a reputation that only recently was beginning to improve after years of being dragged through the mud. Experts are divided over whether it's wise to use Ilfak Guilfanov's Hexblog patch to fix the WMF vulnerability, which could allow attackers to use WMF images to execute malicious code on their victims' computers. Some say it's a necessary measure to protect systems until the official Microsoft patch arrives; others say it's not worth the extra work to patch twice or to take the risk of using a third-party fix.

so I bought GTA IV , thinking that my system would be close to having the required specs.
Installed the game and found that I had graphics issues. So them did the usual updated drivers,
and downloaded game patches. The result? now the game won't load.

I went to the "Can You Run It" site and it tells me that my video card isn't good enough,
but the stats it lists , all pass. So color me confused. Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

Video Card
Minimum: 256MB NVIDIA 7900+ / 256MB ATI X1900+ You Have: GeForce 7300 LE
Features: Minimum attributes of your Video Card
Required
Video RAM 256 MB

Hardware T&L Yes
Pixel Shader version 3.0
Vertex Shader version 3.0

You Have
Video RAM 512.0 MB
3D Yes
Hardware T&L Yes
Pixel Shader version 3.0
Vertex Shader version 3.0
Upgrade Suggested: Unfortunately, your Video Card does not meet this requirement. Click here to see some recommendations.

So there must be some other specs that aren't listed that my card doesn't match because according to what i see my card should be good enough.

thanks for any input.

After the Anniversary update on our two PCs, I find that Homegroup will not connect the two. One is running Pro 64-bit and the other runs Home 32-bit.

I can leave the Homegroup on my PC (Pro) and on the other. Then I create a new Homegroup on my PC and get the password. However, the other PC does not see any Homegroup to join on the network (only the option to create a new Homegroup). I never had any problem with this prior to the update.

If I select My Computer, I can 'see' the other PC but when I select 'Open' and box comes up with ID and Password. My PC is the only one of the two that is password protected. The Home PC boots right to the desktop.

Anyone having the same issue or know of a workaround?

Thanks.

I have been going crazy as I am sure others have been trying to get my computer patched.  I ran Powershell commnds to see if I am ok.  I found out it is incomplete without a patch from Lenovo.  It would be a mistake to not issue a patch as this would seem to be a betrayal of trust for those of us who bought Lenovo products. Please issue. Here is an explanation. The image means that your system received patches for the Meltdown bug, but has received incomplete patches for the Spectre bug. This was to be expected, as Google said yesterday that Spectre is harder to exploit, but also harder to patch. What the red text means is that you need additional chipset firmware updates. Microsoft and Google say that OEMs will need to provide users with these additional firmware updates to complete the Windows OS-level Spectre patches. Depending on your computer's age, some OEM might not make these firmware updates available, meaning you'll be stuck with an incomplete Spectre patch. If your laptop/desktop/server vendor has provided extra chipset firmware updates, you can get them from their official sites, install them, and complete the patch.

According tohttps://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/sa00115-microcode-update-guidance.pdfThere is a microcode patch for the Arrandale i5-520M out there. As of yet this patch is neither in intels linux microcode archive (latest version in there is 0x4 which is years old)https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27945norin the Windows Update cataloghttps://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4090007/intel-microcode-updates I have scraped vendor sites for other laptops that shipped with that processor. A few of them had recent Bios updates with microcode patches. Especially the Panasonic Toughbook CF-31. I unpacked all of those bioses and the microcode was only for later CPUs not this one. So no luck there either.I contacted Intel support and they told me if its not in their official downloads then I have to ask the OEM. It was acknowledged that this patch exists and was shared with OEMs but the person on the other end was not allowed to give me any more Information. At Lenovo it seems all Arrandale Laptops are EOL now, so no new bios updates.Still that machine is pretty useful for me and I'd like use until it turns into dust. Afaik 20655 was used in Thinkpad X201, W410 and T410 which are EOL So if there is no kind stranger out there that can provide me this file somehow I have to give up on that matter. Does anyone of you forum users have more Info?

The inital 1709 build came out with no problems an even the BIOS update worked (F1JY72USA.exe, F1KT72A). Everything was running fine for a day and we attempted to get the latest Windows Security Patches for Specter and Meltdown. We were able to get the system to boot Once after this, did a quick test on our software and then restart to verify that all was good. It wasn't. The Fans in the system started to run full speed and no boot screen showed up. I let the system run for about 3 minutes before I shutdown and tried again with the same results.Next I pulled the memory to see if I could get a Post Beep. I received the Beep and then attempted to boot again with the same results. After the last failure I attempted to Clear the BIOS by pulling the battery and switching the jumper. I left the machine overnight and then plugged it in the next morning and the system fans ran High the entire time. I got a couple beeps, but the system would keep restarting over and over with the fans running high over and over.3 boots later I pulled the power and put everything back (battery, jumper) and attempted to boot normally thinking the BIOS was cleared. Is there a patch available yet?Meltdown and SpectreBugs in modern computers leak passwords and sensitive data. Meltdown and Spectre exploit critical vulnerabilities in modern processors. These hardware bugs allow programs to steal data which is currently processed on the computer. While programs are typically not permitted to read data from other programs, a malicious program can exploit Meltdown and Spectre to get hold of secrets stored in the memory of other running programs. This might include your passwords stored in a password manager or browser, your personal photos, emails, instant messages and even business-critical documents.Meltdown and Spectre work on personal computers, mobile devices, and in the cloud. Depending on the cloud provider's infrastructure, it might be possible to steal data from other customers.

The whole process of finding the problem cause was very time consuming and it raises 3 questions for me:
Q1. Why can't I just download the patches that my system wants
without also automatically install them?
(It takes about 20 minutes up to an hour for my system to check the patch status if I invoke it manually and this is a process I have to repeat redundantly if I only install a subset of the shown patches in a single swoop)
After I had manually downloaded the required KBxxx.msu patches one by one I also had to install them one by one.
Q2. Why is there no GUI option to select a bunch of patches from a downloaded directory and install them in one go? (not forgetting to set a restore point before installing)
Q3. Why is there no easy! feedback channel for problems resulting from updates?

It may become worse with windows 10 automatic updates if a bad update breaks something and people cannot give feedback on this quickly.

I monitor and record various Microsoft Updates for Work, Today I discovered what I believe to be a mistake in online security guide:

I was looking at updates for Windows 10 version 1607 for 32 and 64 bit systems when i noticed an odd patch out

It appears to me the 4054517 patch which belongs to windows 10 version 1709 32 bit was wrongly attached to the 1607 32 bit

Clicking on download for this patch gives you a download list for the wrong version of windows 10?

Is there anyone who can confirm this

Hi.

Just posting here because I have a Toshiba Satellite NB10t-A-101 and after running the checker tool available on the net regarding the machine vulnerability against Spectre and Meltdown, I am concerned by Spectre.

Here after a link to another thread where I arrived after a search.
https://forum.toshiba.eu/showthread.php?98147-BIOS-update-to-protect-against-Meltdown-and-Spectre
I include a link to a Toshiba page with some information on that critical subject.

Seems there is, as of today, no schedule date for my machine.

You may want to check, but on my Vista I don't see any new add-on and I don't even have C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Search Enhancement Pack folder. http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2010...lbar-update.ars As part of its regular Patch Tuesday, Microsoft released an update for its various toolbars, and this update came with more than just documented fixes. The update also installs an add-on for Internet Explorer and an extension for Mozilla Firefox, both without the user's permission. As you can see in the Windows Update screenshot above, Microsoft does not indicate that the update will install anything for either browser. It's also not really clear what the installed extension actually does.

Thanks Broni for the information. As for Firefox can't I just delete the extension. Let us all see which company gits back to B/C with some sort of answer.

windows 7 and when ever microsoft updates install them selves my computer starts screwing up every time. and I end up having to restore my computer and whipe it clean.

this has happened to me multiple times. microsoft updates when installed freeze fire fox and internet explorer, freezes mouse pointer, won't let me click links, freezes youtube videos, kills auido on youtube videos, makes youtube videos unwatchable and turns them into a blank black screen

finally figured out moments ago how to stop those garbage window updates and I will never use them again, I don't care if they keep out a zillion pieces of malware,it will never be installed on my computer again.

Now I need to know how to uninstall the microsoft updates that it installed its self

Make sure you have updates set to download software updates only, not hardware or driver updates.

I have a relatively old Dell Vostro laptop (1.5 years) with Windows XP it was running fine until I logged off yesterday and saw that updates were to be installed with shutdown.

Fine.

A few hours later I re-boot and it takes about 5 minutes on a black screen with a white progress bar at the bottem - then an additional 20 minutes to get any browsers working (though it connects to wireless right away).

I checked Add/remove programs and there were no updates yesterday but Microsoft Silverlight seems to have installed itself.

I tried a virus scan and rebooting server times to no avail -- if it possible Silverlight could be doing this?

Thanks!

K

A:Microsoft Silverlight Killing my Laptop?

Microsoft Silverlight was actually first made for Vista then it adapted to Windows 7, so it was never made for XP, try uninstalling it! I know how to uninstall it using vista or windows 7 but I don't know how to do that using XP so try looking it up!

Microsoft Releases New Windows 10 Virtual Machines

Microsoft has released new Windows 10 virtual machines on the Developer Center, providing us with an updated arsenal of tools to code without the need for a license.

Specifically, the new virtual machines, which are available in Hyper-V, Parallels, VirtualBox and VMWare versions, come with an evaluation license for Windows 10 Enterprise Anniversary Update that will expire on May 21 this year,.

The new evaluation pack includes the aforementioned Windows 10 image, as well as Visual Studio 2015 Community Update 3 (Build 14.0.25425.01), Windows developer SDK and tools (Build 14393), Microsoft Azure SDK for .NET (Build 2.9.6), Windows UWP samples (Feb 2017 Update), and Bash on Ubuntu on Windows.

The company is also offering a non-evaluation version of the Windows 10 image, but this requires a license for the operating system, so additional costs would be involved. The pack has approximately 20 GB in size, and completing the download takes some time, and so does installation.

The UWP effort
Microsoft?s pack of virtual machines and developer tools are specifically aimed at those who want to join the universal app platform effort and create apps that can run on all Windows 10 devices. This is actually part of Microsoft?s push to bring more developers to Windows 10, as it wants universal apps to address the lack of apps in the Windows Store and thus tackle more than just PCs at the same time.

Today, we have updated the Microsoft Edge Dev site with major fixes and new features, including Windows 10 virtual machines with Microsoft Edge and a faster, clearer platform roadmap. With these features, we are excited to remove the ?Beta? tag from Microsoft Edge Dev, and will be redirecting modern.ie to our new home.

Test your site in Microsoft Edge with free Windows 10 virtual machines

Windows 10 virtual machines are now available with the latest updates to Microsoft Edge and the underlying web platform. With this release, we have automated the process we use to create the virtual machines, so future updates will be available more quickly as the platform is updated. By popular demand, we?ll also be supporting new formats for VMs, starting with Vagrant boxes (with VirtualBox) and QEMU. You can expect to see these starting in the coming weeks.

We have also updated RemoteIE to use the latest Microsoft EdgeHTML rendering engine inside Internet Explorer, which gives a very similar rendering experience to testing inside Microsoft Edge. RemoteIE continues to leverage Azure RemoteApp to enable cloud-based testing across platforms without the need to download virtual machines. We are also continuing to work on making Microsoft Edge available via Azure RemoteApp and will provide further updates as we make progress.

Hi there

Great stuff -- I'll see if I can convert one to VMWARE format. I used QEMU years ago -- thought it had "Died the death" -- when VMPLAYER couldn't CREATE VM's but only PLAY them QEMU was a great free tool in being able to create new VM's for VMPLAYER to work with.

Edit -- VMWARE format IS available in the download. !!!!

Anyway I'll post results of messing around with this piece of software if I can get it to work.

And -- Ms have images as well as for Windows - but MAC and LINUX TOO !!!! So Ms does believe that there is life outside Windows.

Hi,

I was considering doing a reinstall of windows in the near future but I read somewhere that Microsoft's latest patch was for a vulnerability that would leave computers open to attack even if they were merely connected to the internet.

My problem is that if I reinstall, my computer will obviously be unpatched until I have downloaded all the windows updates. With my connection that is going to taked over 5 hours. Is there a chance that I could get infected in this time even if I only visit the Microsoft site.

A:About microsoft's Oct 23 patch

Hi,

It is possible to become infected whilst trying to download the updates.

What i would do is to download SP3 and all updates possible to CD and then run the installation from the CD once you have reinstalled Windows. This way you will not have to connect to the internet until you are properly up to date.

Turn off System Restore. (Right-click on My Computer, Properties, System Restore Tab. Check the box.

Scan your system using the latest signature files for your antivirus software. Reboot, then re-enable System Restore.
