Thinkpad X1 Tablet (gen3) Battery Charge Threshold being disabled unexpectedly by itself

Q: Thinkpad X1 Tablet (gen3) Battery Charge Threshold being disabled unexpectedly by itself

Hi there, I just got my new Thinkpad X1 Tablet (gen3) and got some problem when using Battery Charge Threshold in the Lenovo Vantage app. I have set the Threshold to stop charging at 80% and start charging again at 75%. It works at first, for a few days I guess, and suddenly during the lunch time today, I locked the X1 Tablet (battery level 78%), going out for lunch, then I come back and the battery level is 100%. I then opened the Lenovo Vantage app to check, and Battery Charge Threshold is disabled. I have no idea completely, why this settings was messed up, I didn't open the Lenovo Vantage app and the setting was cleared. Can anyone help? Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Community, I have a brand new ThinkPad P71 (20HL), Windows 10 Pro, Bios N1TET50W 1.24 and all latest drivers installed. As seen in the snapshot below, Lenovo Vantage shows the battery condition Good and Cycle count 1, the custome battery charge threshold is Off by defualt and because I use my ThinkPad as a desktop which is always plugged in, therefore which percentage would be best for the battery life span? Thank you.

Not sure where I'd submit a bug report, has anyone else experienced the following? I have my charging thresholds set to 80% in Lenovo Companion for my T470. However, it seem like half the time it will end up charging one or both batteries to 100%. What seems to happen is it charges to 80%, and it might sit there for a little while, and then a battery creeps to 81%, at which point it then gets charged to 100%. I'm assuming the code behind the threshold portion of the program is saying if charge == threshold rather than if charge >= threshold to determine when to cut the charging off.

It's great that Lenovo Vantage cares about the lifespan of our batteries and offers us a choice of charge threshold.  But it offers no guidance what maximum level to set, except that it should be less than 100%.  Lenovo must have studied the effect of maximum charge on battery lifespan, and I wish it would share that information with us.  Higher maximum offers a convenience for most users, but they might be willing to trade some of that convenience for some increase in battery lifespan.  We need data in order to decide.  For example, does even setting the maximum at 95% have significant livespan advantage vs. setting maximum at 100%?  Without knowing such things we're just bumbling in setting battery charge threshold.

My P51 battery is set to start charging when below 80% and stop charging at 95%.  (Lenovo Companion> Hardware Settings> Power> Battery Charge Threshold> Start Charging When Below 80%> Stop Charging at 95%).  I have my P51 plugged in all the time.  The battery always stays at 95% charged, it never reduces down to below 80% and then automatically recharges back up to 95%.  Obviously the P51 will run the battery down when unplugged and then when plugged back in it will recharge back up to 95% capacity and stay there. My older T530 had the same settings as my new P51 does but it honors the charging perameters  set by the T530's Lenovo Companion's Charging Threshold....The battery charge gradually reduces to below 80% and then it automatically recharges back up to 95%...Thus "exercising the battery".                       My question is two fold...1.  Why doesn't the P51 perform the same way that the T530 does using the same Charging Thresholds?2.  Isn't it beneficial for a Lithium Battery to vary it's charge vs. staying charged always at the same level? Curious...Altoid666

My guess is that the power management works the same.  Probably, the T530's cells are slowly losing charge over time and when it gets below 80% it charges.  The new battery cells probably lose charge also, but MUCH more slowly.  When it gets below 80%, it will charge.  If you want to vary the charge level, unplug it for a few minutes, occasionally.  I think Lithium cells degrade over time, but I think the degredation speed has more to do with ambient temperature and number of recharge cycles.

Hi! I have X1C 5th 20HR. I was using it with the Windows 10 Pro which came built in. I was using it with the battery charge threshold option (95%).After that, I switched to Ubuntu and clean installed it. I tried to change it (charge threshold) also with Ubuntu, but I failed. The battery was only charging up to 94 % all the time. I was okay with it.Yet, after several months, I had to change back to Windows. Now I have Win10 Pro again, but this time, whenever I try to set up a threshold, it is set for several seconds, and after that, it turns itself off automatically. I tried it like 30 times already with a different threshold, with different levels of battery charge, almost with an empty battery, but no result. Is this behavior expected? How can I fix it? I will attach my attempt as GIF file

There was both a "Runtime Application Reconfiguration" for the Lenovo Power Manager to-day and Lenovo System Interface Driver install/reconfiguration mentioned in the Reliability Monitor. I'm looking at a battery that's sitting at 75% (not charging)- when it should be charging to 80%.Any ideas? Hi,  I have an X1 yoga gen 2 since a bit more than a year, I like this laptop but to be honest there are a few annoying quirks. Pen not working properly since day one, keys marking the screen, disappointing battery, but that not why I am posting today, since the last 6 months, when then pushed the vantage software the battery threshold setting are not really saved, it works for a day or two and then revert back to off, charging the battery to 100%. I read it happen for other people after reaching 0% battery but that is never my case as I rarely go under 20%  Any help would be appreciated. I am now out of warranty, so I would like to keep the battery healthy?

Hi. I'm having issues with my battery threshold option. I want the battery to stop charging when it reaches 80%. However, it will never keep the setting on forever. I randomly find out that it charges the battery to 100% instead of stopping at 80%. This is most likely to happen when my Thinkpad P50 is turned off and is charging. Although, it is not every time that it simply charges to 100% instead. Can someone help me figure out why on earth it keeps turning the battery threshold option completely off? I want to have the option on permanently so that my battery will live longer. Best regards,Jesper

Hi there, I have a question with regards to power management for my Lenovo thinkpad x1 yoga 3rd. I tried finding a solution to be able to manage the charging threshold points myself. However, anything I found points to either old solutions (Lenovo Companion, Lenovo Settings) or it doesn't seem to be fully working for my device and environment (Windows 10).I have ended up installing Lenovo Vantage from the Windows App Store but I notice that:- it takes a long time for the app to start (several minutes)- there is no "Power" menu item under HW I am not sure if the app is compatible with my device? For example, the Update System Drivers function doesn't seem to work at all. I triggered the same and the hour glass indicates gathering information but nothing seems to happen (I waited for more then 30 min).  So, as I usually work off the power supply and only seldom on battery, I want to be able to limit charging of the battery to a max of 80 or 85%. I found some instructions on tweaking registry settings but all they did so far is showing the battery icon in the task bar (but maybe that came with the Lenovo Vantage installation, I can't be fully sure).  I read several posts that the threshold settings are not necessary for modern / new systems but being an electrical engineer and having read up on the Lithium Ion Battery charging issue, I beg to differ! Unless the battery is calibrated to show 100% at a "true" 85% charge, charging the las... Read more

A:Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 docking station does not charge Thinkpad P51 battery.

Everbody's p51 would be the same.  The thunderbolt port won't work as a charging port.  The thunderbolt specs specify 100w max.  That's not enough.  Your thunderbolt port is not for charging.  To charge via the dock, you need a workstation dock, not a thunderbolt dock.  A thinderbolt dock can charge things like an x1 carbon (5th gen) or x1 yoga (2nd gen)

Hi,I just activated battery "charge threshold" mode (with the default 80-85%). Let's say I need to charge the battery to 100% once a week, how do I do that without changing the threshold in Vantage? Thank you!

A:How to do a full charge when "charge threshold" mode is activated

You can turn off chargin threshold.  It should fully charge.  Then turn back on charging threshold afterwards.  I've done that on Thinkpads before.  Turn off charging threshold and once charged to 100% for a out of office business appointment then turn back on charging threshold.  A little error message pops up in vantage that something to the effect charging threshold wont take effect until battery level is below threshold limit.  The thresholds are still stored from when you turn charging threshold off and back on in Vantage.

I bought a Thinlpad R51 - 1836 BBU used and with no battery. I bought a new battery, installed it and the battery drained completely. I sent it back and got a new one and also bought a new power chord. The battery and new power chord worked fine for two months. Last week the battery drained completely again (while plugged into AC chord).

Again I bought a new battery (extended life this time) and bought a docking station. I am now faced with the new battery drains everytime I use it. The power chord does not charge it. The docking station does not charge it either. I would like some questons answered:

Is it normal for the pc to have to be ON for the battery to be charged?

Does anyone know if there is any indication that the power chord is plugged in while the battery is installed? When on AC only, it shows plug - When battery installed (on battery only or with AC chord) computer shows on battery power.

Do the external battery charger units really work? this may be my only way of recharging my battery if not through the pc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

I was not able to find anything interesting on the support site of your model:
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-yoga-series-laptops/thinkpad-...

I checked the change on the ELAN drivers from 12/1/2016, but it does not says anything about the touchpad not recovering from tablet mode.

If you already installed this driver and didn't work, I don't have more ideas about it.

I've got a Thinkpad 600E running WindowsXP, which has performed pretty well, although the original battery (understandably) just refuses to hold a charge very long any more - although it will reliably recharge when the laptop is running on A/C.

I decided to invest in a new (genuine) IBM replacement laptop battery, which upon receipt, just wouldn't seem to go into the recharge cycle. The recharge light (lower left screen hinge) only blinks orange. Assuming "defective battery", I requested and received a return merchandise authorization, and returned the battery and requested a replacement. The replacement arrived, and the same problem.

Although not outside the realm of reasonableness, it seems improbably that two consecutive replacement laptop batteries would be defective. Under power options, the replacement battery appears to be being recognized - although just not charging (graphic shows a "circle and bar" running through the battery image).

So, clearly (at least to me),

There's nothing wrong with my A/C adapter
There's nothing wrong with my existing (old) battery
There's nothing wrong with the battery charging circuitry

Again, this is a genuine IBM laptop battery, with the exact same model as the old one and it seems to defy reason that this battery also has some sort of defect. Any suggestions on a way to "kick-start" the new battery into recharging?

Hello all, Please forgive if this has been posted. I couldn't find an answer: I purchased a replacement for my battery, but on installation it wouldn't charge. I tried disabling AC and battery in device manager. I tried complete shut down and reboot. Couldn't get the new battery to be recognized. The old battery still works a bit, so I'm not in serious trouble. but with the battery going on a few years old, I wanted to replace before it left me stranded. Is there something that must be done to tell the system (Win 8.1 x 64 pro) to recognize that the battery is new, and to reflash the battery firmware and reset the driver? Simply replacing the battery didn't quite get the job done. Thank you for any response.

Hi (my first post here), I observe severe performance issues when using my X1 Tablet (20GGCT01WW, 1.gen) in battery mode on Windows 10. Everything becomes so slow that it is hardly usable. Pluggin in the power supply and the tablet works fine again.I installed the Lenovo Power Management Driver form the lenovo webpage and tried to change the "power plan" on windows. However, the is no way, it seems, to prevent the cpu/gfx to be down clocked in battery mode? When clicking on the power-icon in the task bar, there is a ""power mode"-slider to increase the performance in battery mode. However, this also has almost no effect. There is no such problem when using the tablet on Linux, so it is not a bios thing. And the battery runtime with linux is only a little less than on windows.  The drop in performance is extremely annoying on windows and I find the x1 tablet hardly usable at all with windows in battery mode. So, any idea or help from anybody how to keep the maximum performance when when power is unplugged and only using the battery on windows 10?  I mean, what does it help to have a longer run time when you hardly can work during that time? Any help is much appreciated, nexus
