I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Therefore, I restarted my laptop assuming that it will fix the issue. But it did not. Some keys are not outputting anything, some are inputting the letters "z", "/" and "\". Like when I press the letters asd, it will output of "z\". I tried uninstalling my keyboard laptop in the Device Manager but it didn't help at all. Leading to a conclusion that it may be a software/hardware problem. Or a virus, but I scanned throughout my laptop and didn't find anything. I am using the on screen keyboard at the moment. Hello,
I?m relatively new at this, so I?m hoping I?m posting in the right forum with the correct information. I have 1-year-old Dell Studio 15 laptop and have been having problems with my wireless connections. If I am hard-wired to my router (D-Link), I have regular online service. Without the hard wire, I cannot get online. The problem is that Vista will not respond at all to either the ?connect to a network? or ?set up a connection or network? commands. I do not get an error message or pop up box of any kind...just no response. I think my wireless card is working okay because I could open the utility program and see that it is finding my router and other networks in the area. Since the Connect to a Network command was working a little while ago, I tried a system restore, but that did not solve the problem.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have a Sony Vaio Notebook running a Windows XP (Pro) operating system.
The Notebook cotains 2 drives. A "C" drive and a "D" drive.
I would like to add the "D" drive letter to the drop down menu of the "Send To" button.
Can anyone help me with this?

Thank you very much.

A:add a "drive letter" to the "send to" drop down list

Place a shortcut to the drive (or folder) you want to be the target in c:\Documents and Settings\"Your User Name"\SendTo folder. That is the directory from which the Send To menu is loaded. I'm looking at a win2000 system and the XP location may be slightly different but it's somewhere in there. If you put the shortcut in the "Default User" folder then whenever you create a new user, that user will have the same option.

Hi there I have noticed that my drive letters shown in disk management are different from those being shown in "list volume" in the windows recovery console command prompt. Below are some pictures, number one showing my current partition setup with the drive letters and number two-four showing what is shown in "list volume" in the windows recovery console command prompt.

SEE PIC #1 ; SEE PIC #2, SEE PIC #3, SEE PIC #4

NOTE: If I do a "list volume" in a non recovery console command prompt the drive letters are shown as they are shown in disk management.

A:Drive letter in "list volume" WRE is different from "My Computer" Fix?

I believe that is normal since the recovery console assigns letters based on which partition it sees first. It is not aware of the fact that the System Reserved partition doesn't get a drive letter assigned as does Windows.

I broke one of the "feet" on my old E-Machines PS/2 keyboard I have used for years and like. I also use one at work that's pretty close to the same layout. I am looking everywhere for a keyboard with a large "enter" and "backspace" I can't find one. I don't care if it's USB or PS/2 but hate the "flat" type that ship with computers these days you look at the key to hard and it presses. I have HUGE hands and like the "old style" keyboard that you have to press pretty hard on the keys (like an actual spring under them) Do any of you know of a specialty keyboard shop or somewhere else with a big selection? I have looked all over the internet on the "major" places. (i.e. Newegg, TigerDirect, BestBuy, Wal-Mart, etc...)

If anyone knows of a place that has "old style" keyboards please let me know. I may have to settle but for such a small purchase that I use so much, I'd like to get what I want and I can't be the only one with massive hands having these same issues. The world isn't made for us big guys.

This afternoon, all of a sudden, I couldn't log into Outlook, Gmail, enter an address in IE or use Google. Whenever I entered a "r" the "Run" box would appear and whenever I entered an "e" the search box would appear. Most of the letters worked OK but a lot of them brought up something else. This has never happened before. I tried using "System Restore" all the way back to 12/31 but that did not help. I have been running ESET NOD32 (it's 97% finished and although it hasn't found any virus infections, it has located numerous errors opening files.)

Then, all of sudden, the situation corrected itself and I was able to log into Outlook and Gmail and use Google.

Has anyone heard of this? l thought I would post this problem to see if there is anything I can do to correct the situation rather that hope that it corrects itself.

At first I thought it was because I used a wireless keyboard, but I tried it with a wired USB keyboard and it still doesn't work.

It would be my feeling that if you are using a USB keyboard try a PS/2 keyoard.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm trying to fix my brother's computer after he opened a trojan attached to an email. The email was the one saying your credit card had been charged for airline tickets.

The first problem is that after normal login there is a blue screen with a yellow window in the window with the message

"Warning! Spyware detected on your computer! Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer."

There are no icons visible. The only action I can perform is CTL-ALT-DEL to bring up the Windows Task Manager. I told my brother to start in Safe Mode from which he scanned the computer using AVG Free Edition which was installed before the infection. This did not fix the problem.

Starting Safe Mode I now get a black screen with Safe Mode in the corners and the operating system name at top. The blue login screen then comes up with Administrator and my brothers account. I click on Administrator and I get the same black screen as before with Safe Mode in the corners and the writing at top. My brothers account does the same. There are no icons or Start button visible.

Again, the only program I can bring up is the Windows Task Manager. Using that, I managed to install and run SmitfraudFix which was given as a solution to "Spyware detected" screen. After rebooting this did not fix the problem. I also installed SpyHunter 3.5.11 which found Zlob.Trojan, Rogue.AntivirusXP 2008 plus some other ... Read more

A:No "ScreenShots" Folder in Pictures To Hold " Print Screen" Images!

Is it just saving the screenshots somewhere else or is it just not taking screenshots at all? Don't know about your specific system, but on my Win 10 lappy, the screen blinks (dims) when the screenshot is taken.
Did you look in all the subfolders in Pictures to see if Screenshots folder is buried in one of them?
Win 10 also has a Snipping Tool which will allow you to put a box around the part of the screen you want to capture and then you can save it wherever you want. Maybe that's easier, and you can pin the Snipping Tool to the Start menu so it's easy to find.

Hi

I've a Dell pc with a small, hidden diagnostic FAT16 EISA partition.

Starting a few days ago, this formerly hidden partition appears to have become visible to Windows XP which assigns it a drive letter.

I used the command "mountvol /d" to remove such newly created drive letter, but it reappears everytime Windows boots or restarts, even in Safe Mode.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Is it possible that a certain registry setting relating to the (formerly) hidden partition has somehow been altered? If so, how can this be reversed so that no drive letter is assigned automatically to the (formerly) hidden partition?

An interesting observation is that, in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices, there is no \DosDevices\{x} (where {x} is the drive letter) which corresponds to the drive letter now assigned to the (formerly) hidden partition.

I cannot use the Disk Management MMC Snap-in to remove the drive letter assignment, since selecting the partition and right-clicking only brings up a single "Help" line in the context menu, without any of the usual options (like "Change Drive Letter and Paths...").

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and feedback!

Cryptkeeper Linux Encryption App Fails at Job, Has One Letter Skeleton Key - "P"

Cryptkeeper, famous Linux encryption app, is not as safe as one would like since a bug has been discovered, allowing universal decryption with a single letter: ?p.?

The flawed version can be found in Debian 9 (Stretch), which is currently in testing, but not in Debian 8 (Jessie). According to the folks who discovered the bug, it seems that this is a result of Cryptkeeper invoking encfs and attempting to enter paranoia mode. It does this with a simulated ?p? keypress but instead of doing that it sets the folder password to this particular letter.

Considering this is a tool that?s supposed to offer people protection by encrypting their files, it?s quite ironic that it could be opened universally with a single letter.

The problem seems to stem from the fact that encfs is executed with ?S switch, reading the password from stdin without a particular prompt. Following an encfs bug that prevented it from doing what it was supposed to do, a bugfix was released to correct the procedure. This, in turn, broke Cryptkeeper?s interface, preventing it from doing its job of securing people?s data.

Taking it down
Simon McVittie, Debian developer, advised the dev team to take out Crytkeeper out of the Linux distro completely. ?I also notice that cryptkeeper does not check what write() and close() return during its interactions with encfs, which seems very likely to lead to unde... Read more

Has any other business gotten this? We got a letter from Microsoft corperation that their Office 2003 suite contained 3rd party code and they require for us to stay licensed and compliant that all installs have to be upgraded to SP 2 and then to SP 3 when it gets released...

It does not go into specifics but is on Microsoft company paper and is addressed from them so I am not thinking this to be some kind of HOAX... but I can't find anything mentioned online about it at all on the internet.

Has anyone else seen this does anyone have a link to the story as to who the third party and why they are sending out this letter and what was infringed upon enough to require a mailing to customers? Hi,
My windows 7 is suddenly applying a drive letter to the system partition, and removing the letter which causes the "new disk inserted" window to keep popping up every half second. In Disk Manager the drive letter appears and disappears every half second.
The only way I've stopped it is to permanently apply a drive letter, which means it is now visible in windows explorer.

A:System reserved partition becoming "visible" and intermittently assigned drive letter by Windows

I assume by 'system partition' you really mean the hidden system restore partition installed by your PC builder? If so, then after I just fired up Paragon Partition Manager to see what it makes of that partition on my Win 7 PC, I find the partition is Primary, NTFS, active, not hidden, volume name WinRe.

The main interesting thing is the volume letter seems to be set to '*'. It appears as (*) rather than (C: ) as the OS drive does. Furthermore, the main menu has a 'partition' tab, where one of the options is 'assign drive letter', and the next option below is 'remove drive letter' which is currently greyed out.

Looking at the standard Windows computer management, storage, disk management, I see a similar picture, except there is no volume letter at all (apparent in that window anyway).

Quite how the partition gets identified in that way is a puzzle, but you might try a free partition manager, such as gparted and see what that says, and possibly allows you to change. As I say above, Paragon Partition Manager might let you de-assign a drive letter but I dont dare try it myself

When I plug any hard drive or memory stick into either USB port on my Dell XP computer, the default E: drive letter and device does not appear in the "My Computer" window. I can see it when I access the administrative tool for storage devices and access it there also.

If I change the drive letter to any other letter, all works fine and the drive is forever denoted with whatever drive letter I have assigned. The problem is that the E: is always the default and therefore any new device requires a manual letter assignment in order to make it operate.

I think the problem began when I was downloading a large set of files from a friend's external hard drive. It all went okay until one of the files hung up the system due to some sort of fault in the file. I waited a long time for the computer to resolve the problem but nothing happened. Instead of trying the Task Manager to stop the process, I forced a shutdown with the on/off button.

I have tried uninstalling the USB driver and also uninstalling various drives. All the drives work fine in my other computers. My friend's drive worked okay after I re-booted, and I was able to complete the upload. The problem seemed to start after I got a blue screen when performing another boot-up the next day. I shut down from the blue screen (it just said there was a serious error without defining it) and restarted normally and all - except the drive letter issue - worked fine.

I would appreciate any assistance.

Hi Toucan,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

OK, it looks like some program you had installed had disabled the automount and always looks for and assigns a drive letter to the pen drive. (my guess). This in most cases can be corrected by entering into the program settings and making the necessary changes.

Can you recollect any such program that looks for a drive?

What programs/games did you install recently?

What are those "large set of files" you downloaded?

I had Windows XP Home installed on my C drive.
I purchased Vista Home Premium and when I installed it on my 500 Gig Drive--
The "System(s)" automatically made a partition of about 100gigs -leaving XP Home OS as Drive E: and My new Vista install went on Drive C:
And Voila! It ("System(s)" ) also constructed a Dual Boot Selection for me!

I have recently bought Windows XP PROFESSIONAL to Upgrade(Home) and proposed to install XP Pro on
Drive E:

I First got a message that the copy I have is already "newer" than the one I'm trying to Install.
I let this fly by and then I got Question: "Would YOU like to select the Partition and Drive Letter for this Install? Naturally I ticked BOTH Options (YES)

As the 56 minute install was into 10-12 minutes I got an Warning error that the (Install) CAB on Drive C was going into an Error state.

I REALLY don't want to mess with drive C: AT ALL --as I've installed the Windows 7 Candidate Release OVER the VISTA OS on Drive C

Can anyone help me out here ?

A:"Would YOU like to select the Partition and Drive Letter for this Install?"

Well firstly if you want to upgrade your XP Home install make sure you run the XP Pro setup from XP HOME!! Then it should tell you that your current OS is older than the one on disk, and offer you the option to upgrade.

NB: When you boot into XP you should notice that the drive letters will be different (usually the current system drive is associated to C:- so in XP, your XP part will be C, but in Vista/7 your vista part will instead be labled C:).

As long as you've booted into XP, and run the upgrade setup from there you shouldn't encounter any problems, and it shouldn't touch your Vista partition.

The only issue you may find is that the XP Pro setup might re-write your boot selector with the old legacy one used back in XP, so you wont be able to boot into Vista/7, but that can be fixed by either using EasyBCD in XP to restore the BCD boot manager, or by booting your PC from the Vista/7 disc and selecting the option to repair startup issues.

Update: I just needed to press F7 to disable it! Curse that F7!

So recently this 'thing' appeared again and I would like to disable it because it's kind of annoying seeing it on non-typeable places.

Here's a screenshot:

A:How to disable the "type letter" effect?

That is the image you will see when you open IE11 with google as your homepage and default search engine.

That is exactly what I get.
What's wrong with that ? You can't change that.
Maybe I don't understand what you said ?

I just partitioned and formatted "Disk 2" or "Drive K: on my system. While Drive Management was opened, I noticed that each of the other disks, 0, 1, and 3, all have Unallocated Space. For 0 and 3 the space is 'insignificant' in today's terms, 3 Mb and 9Mb respectively, but for disk 1 the amount is 130.42 Gb.

I don't believe I did this deliberately. Disks 1 and 3 were once part of a RAID1 created under Intel's Rapid Storage Technology. Since 1 was larger than 3 (640 Gb vs 500 Gb in nominal terms) does this perhaps explain what I am seeing?

On Tuesday I should take delivery of a 1 Tb WD Caviar black SATA drive. I will use this as my primary data drive and once I am comfortable that everything is where it should be I will reformat 1 and 3 to use as devices for backup storage. Disk 1 is about 50% full (and could stand some 'housekeeping'.) CrystalDiskInfo 6.1.14 reports Power On Hours : 18929 hours and Power On Count : 1896 count for this drive. For Disk 3 the values are Power On Hours : 28065 hours and Power On Count : 2729 count.

Is it reasonable to trust them for a while yet or should they each be given a 'gold watch' and retired?

Am I correct that each time Windows 7 'hibernates' I save in terms of "Power on Hours" but I accumulate another "power on Count?" Is there reliable evidence that this is a better strategy for prolonging HDD life than a single, overnight shutdown. The system would otherwise normally run a 16 - 18 hour day, 7... Read more

Hi everyone,

I own a laptop (no numerical keypad on the right) with 32 bit Windows 7 professional.

I have both the English and Italian keyboard installed. (I switch between the languages using ctrl + shift)

When typing in Italian, I sometimes need ' ? ' to be capitalized. How can I accomplish this?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

A:Making the European letter " ่ " capitalized?

You could use Character map (start\all programs\accessories\system tools\: ?

And you could make a macro out of it, using hotkeys to paste it into your document.

From one only, email recipient, the letter "A" appears at the start of a paragraph, for no known reason.

It appears only by one recipient to whom I send or forward an e mail. When he replies to the particular email, I can see dozens od letter "A"s appearing.

The recipient insists it's only on an occasional e mail from me. He suggests it might be an AOL problem, which I use on line. No one else has mentioned any such occurence.

Is there some "setting" that causes this phenomenon? Any ideas at all?

Thankx
