resizing desktop icon text seems to change the size of program windows

Q: resizing desktop icon text seems to change the size of program windows

I have a PC connected to my tv in the lounge which i use as a media centre mainly.
It's 4 meters away from my armchair and my eyes aren't so good any more so I increased the icon text size to 150%.
that was fine except the one other Program I use regularly, which has a fixed windows size is now too big for the screen.

I only wanted the text size altered. Why is this happening?

PC is win 7 and I altered the text size from control panel/display BTW

Preferred Solution: resizing desktop icon text seems to change the size of program windows

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Im no expert on this but i thought if increasing above 100% you may need to reduce screen resolution to still fit display window

Although im not sure what that would look like on a big tv ?

Hi, This is my first post. I recently was given a new Dell 15R touchscreen computer and it was upgraded to Windows 8.1. I've only used Windows XP up until 3 days ago. I am a novice user.

I liked the way the desktop icons looked in XP, the shortcuts for Netflix and Ikea were a nice big red box with an N in it for Netflix, a yellow and blue box for Ikea . They were medium sized, about 1/2" big, but I could recognize them easily and quickly because of the individual graphics.

Now with Windows 8.1, the shortcut icons are a 1/2" white square and a very teeny tiny logo in the center that I can barely see and have confused with other similar icons. I have found where to change the icon size and text size but not the icon appearance. Where would I find this? I have right clicked on the desktop, I've looked in the control panel, I've checked display.

8.1 is a heck of a learning curve for me and I am enjoying learning the new system but I would like to be able to quickly and easily see what I put on my desktop.

Thank you for any and all help. I appreciate it.

I have two PC's, both running Windows 8.1
This question does not pertain to Windows 7 or earlier versions of the Windows Operating System.
On the 1st PC, the text displayed under the icons on the Desktop is completely black with no shadows.
On the 2nd PC the text displayed under the icons on the Desktop is white with a black shadow, even when the background color is solid white!
I want to change the color of the icon text on the 2nd PC to a solid black, as is present on the 1st PC.
I have been through the following with no success:
 - Changed all personalization settings by right clicking and selecting Personalization on the desktop.
 - Ran Regedit and tried changing, and comparing  the Color Settings between the two PC's, under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Control Panel, ColorsHKEY_CURRENT_USER, Control Panel, Desktop, ColorsHKEY_CURRENT_USER, Control Panel, Desktop, WindowMetrics
Within the Control Panel I have selected System, Advanced System Settings, Advanced, Performance, Visual Effects where I unchecked the "Use Drop Shadows for icon labels on the desktop".  I verified that the ListViewShadow is being changed
using Regedit at HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Explorer, Advanced yet there is still no affect upon the Desktop screen, even when rebooted.  I also tried changing ListViewShadow directly in the registry, again with no

A:Change Icon Text Color On Windows 8.1 Desktop

Hello Yolanda,
Your suggestion above about disabling the "show my desktop background on Start" did enable me to get black text/font under the icons on the Desktop.
I have also found another contributor to creating white shadowed text/font as follows:
If, when using the Control Panel, System\Advanced System Settings\Advanced\Performance\Visual Effects\Use Drop Shadows for icon labels on the desktop is set then: When using regedit, there is a correlation
between HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\PaintDesktopVersion being set to 1, which gives the white shadowed text/font on the Desktop.  Disabling (or setting to 0) allowed the black text/font to reappear, but only after entering
regedit for at least two times.  The change wouldn't take affect with just one entry into regedit.  Of course the real purpose of this property is to display the Windows version and build in the lower right corner of the Desktop.

I have researched until I am blue in the face and not found out how to do this.

We are getting ready to have house guests, and I have created an account for them to use. I would like to create a desktop shortcut icon which is roughly double the size of the other icons to draw attention to it. The target file will be a basic readme with a couple of short rules for using my computer.

If I cannot find a way to create the single larger icon, I will resort to another idea I have in mind. That idea is to type the rules in Word and use Snipping Tool to capture the text and use the resulting image as a desktop background.

Hello everyone. I need to find where the Desktop icon size is stored in the registry. I already looked into this:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics - Shell Icon Size
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\1\Desktop - IconSize

But neither of these seem to change anything. Even if I change the icon size by using right click or the mouse scroll wheel, these values don't change at all. So where is this data really stored? Thanks in advance.

This view size is controlled by HKU specific user registry. Thus it can't be mapping to another user account.
If you insist, there is a complex workaround(However I wouldn't like to recommend you use this method):

I know that there have been many people running XP who actually wanted to get rid of the background colour for their desktop icon label text, so it was transparent. Vista should keep those people happy on that score, though no doubt troubling them with other annoyances! However, because I myself prefer to have an image (changed about every 3 days) as my desktop background, a solid colour background to icon label text is essential for readability. The Vista default of having dark shading around white lettering does make those captions readable against all backgrounds, BUT they look ugly to me and against some pale backgrounds they are still quite difficult to read.

I've spent some time on Google searches for means to restore the user-chosen solid colour background for the icon labels as I had it in XP, and it rather looks as though in Vista there may not be a means to make such a change, at least in any usefully permanent way. My search did lead me to a little utility called D-Color, which actually does just what I want, and I was able to have my icon labels once again with white text on a 'teal' background, which was just what I wanted - except (yes, there always seems to be an 'except' in one's seeking to tame Vista!) that the colour setting isn't permanent and is wiped out with any screen refresh or restart. So, I have to have D-Color as a startup program to set the icon label background colour for the session and have it available all the time for me to run it and click O... Read more

Hi I'm new here. Nice forum btw. I'll just get right into it.

What I'm trying to achieve. I downloaded a nice little program called Folderico and it allows me to apply an icon image to a folder. I wanted to increase the windows explorer icon size to 192x192 and have the folder (with applied icon image) look something like this:

The problem. Whenever I change the icon size, via registry tweak, everything else changes too. I don't want the icons on the desktop to change size nor do I want the icons in the menu and tool bar to change, just the folder so that it'll look exactly like the picture above.

Windows Vista has some sort of slider feature that will let the user change the icon size for just the folder quite easily but I'm using Windows XP. Are there other registry tweaks that some of you could suggest? Is there some soft of Vista hacked version of their explorer that I can use on Windows XP?

I'd really appreciate any help that I can get on this. Thanks in advance.

I have a laptop, with a display that has up to 2048x resolution and an external monitor that does 1920x. I have tried to keep both set the same resolution so the mouse will easily go back and fort.

If I bump one setting, others seem to change. Like after an update too!

I need a script, to set, then set again, and again, the
display settings,
the custom scaling level, and
the "change only text size".

Keeping the monitor placement geometry the same would be great for me too.

Oh for a cross reference on Outlook 2013 to the system setting. I keep manipulating the view settings there too.

Probably to get started I could use a "settings display" script.

A:Any way to change type size but NOT icon size?

Here's my whole list of font size change settings, one of which might provide the answer for you. You've probably tried some of them, but see if there's something here that might change the font size on those icons, without changing the size of the icons themselves:

1. This is the one of the main setting tools for setting various locations of Windows font sizes. Right-click on the Desktop and go to Personalize, Window Color and Appearance. Click on Advanced, and in the drop-down menu, select the item that controls the location where you wish to change the font size. (Note: the last one, Window, does not have an option to control font size.)

2. DPI - Right click on Desktop, Personalize, On Personalization Page, go to left column to: Adjust Font size ? DPI, DPI Scaling: Click on Large scale (120 DPI), and click Apply.

3. Screen Resolution: Right-click on the Desktop, choose Screen Resolution, click on the down-arrow at the end of the Resolution box, and pick the desired resolution. Check OK.

4. Display: Right-click on the Desktop, select Personalize, then Display. From the 3 settings: Small, Medium, Large, if screen defaults to Medium (125% size for font and images) and that?s too large, use Small for 100% size (aka ?normal?)

5. At the lower right hand corner of every IE web page, there?s a Zoom control that lets you increase the size of every web page, and it stays at that Zoom setting for every page until/unless you change it.

Good afternoon everyone, having an issue lately that's driving me a bit nutty. I have 3 monitors, all the same brand, 1 2 3, with 2 being my middle and primary monitor.

If this sounds a bit assinine sorry but I have each set to 4k resolution. I used to use the build in text scaling option (right click, display settings) and set each one to 200%.

Recently I installed a game that doesn't appreciate text scaling, to run it properly I had to disable the scaling on my main monitor.

For a while this was fine, all my desktop icons lived on monitor 1 or 3, and were scaled up to 200%. Now for whatever reason, the scaling I set on my main monitor effects 1 and 3s icons only. - So no matter where my icons are they're at normal 4k size, but if I move a window into either 1 or 3, they scale up to the 200% I have set.

Can anyone help with this?
I don't want to change resolution if I can help it on either of the other monitors, as anything besides the 4k just looks fuzzy to me.

How do I change the white font display under the desktop icons to black in Windows 7?

A:Change Desktop Fonts From White to Black Text - Windows 7

How do I change the white font display under the desktop icons to black in Windows 7?
This cannot be changed, unless you use a third party theme. The Desktop fonts are dynamic and designed to always be visible. This is necessary because of the varying color of a typical desktop background. If you select a black icon and you have a desktop wallpaper that has very dark areas, those black fonts would become completely invisible. The default white desktop icons display a 'shadow' around the letters. The visibility of this shadow will appear to change, depending on the background color where the fonts are located. On a darker background you will not see the shadow and on a lighter background the shadow will appear darker. This will make the fonts more visible, regardless of what color the wallpaper may be.You can test this effect by moving a desktop icon over a very dark area of the desktop and then moving the same icon over a very light area of the desktop.Hope this helps.Thank You for testing Windows 7

I use XP, but the "window text" - e.g., the text inside XP windows when opening a folder giving its contents - is becoming too small for my ageing eyes.
It seems that this can be modified only if under Deskrop > Properties > Display Propeties one choses "Windows Clasic Style" rather than "Windows XP Style". The option to change font size is greyed-out if one goes to"Advanced Appearance" and selects "Window". Selecting "Windows XP Style" overrides some of the options that would otherise be available.
Curiously, if one selects "Active Title Bar WIndow" and changes rhe font size, the dialog box preview changes both the Title font and the displayed Window Text, but if all that  is accepted, only the tite font is changed.
So - is there either a change in the Registry that can be made to alter the default "Windows XP Style" settings for this, or another registry change, or a bit of software that can increase the font in "Window Text" without changing everything else? I know about changing DPI, etc., but I would prefer not to make global changes. (On one forum someone suggested making global changes and then reducing the font size on everything else...).
Thank you.

A:increase size of "window text" only - is there a registry change to do this?

Have you tried the Windows suggestion of using High Contrast in the Accessibility Options \ Display?  It may solve your problem although I have to admit, I didn't like the appearance of Windows when I tested it.    Changing the DPI setting may be the simplest solution and you can always change it back if you don't like the results.  Mine is set at 96dpi and it works for me and my eyes are shot!  You could even use the Custom DPI setting to a size of your choice.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Hi there
Big drawback with the Metro version of IE is that it doesn't seem possible to change the text size -- on a large monitor using the "Normal" version -- the desktop version of IE I can change the text size at will and zoom the image which I usually have at 150%.

The text size on the Metro version is FAR FAR too small for me on a large monitor -- can see myself needing a "White Stick" if I had to carry on reading like that for too long.

It's OK maybe for youngsters who are used to spending hours reading text from tiny mobile phone screens but it's no good for me.

Not sure what Ms's game here but this is bound to be a BIG TURN OFF for anybody over about 27 years old (and I'm a lot older than that).

This whole idea of rigid window sizes where you can't zoom seems ridiculous.

Note here -- It MIGHT work on a TOUCH screen by pinching the sides but

1) can't test it as I don't have (or want) a touch screen when I'm working at a Desk.

2) The last thing I want to do is leave smeary finger marks over my nice expensive large LCD screen

3) even if it had touch - I'm sitting far too far away from it to make this a practical method of working to alter text and zoom etc.

(On a Samsung smart phone I don't have problems with text size by pinching the screen - but I'm NOT working on a PHONE when I'm at my desk with a nice large screen).

A:Metro version of IE - change text size -- seems impossible

for the mouse:
hold down the <CTRL> key and roll the mouse wheel up and down.

for touch:
do the pinching motion bigger or smaller

I have a 17" 1920x1080 monitor, and everything was too small, so I've change the display size to 125%, by default it was on 100% , and now some icons on the taskbar are blurry.
I don't want to change the display size to 100%, I just wanna make the icon sizes smaller. Is there any solution?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
