Apps Icons have gone blank on start screen in Windows 8

Q: Apps Icons have gone blank on start screen in Windows 8

Most of the apps icons on my Start Screen have gone blank...just colored tiles with nothing in it. No name, no live update, nothing. What is going on???

Preferred Solution: Apps Icons have gone blank on start screen in Windows 8

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi guys,

Can I have icons on the Start screen that do not show up on the Apps screen ?

A:Icons on Start But Not Apps Screen ?

Hello Emperor,

Sure, you can. Anything that you "Pin to Start" from another location will not be added to the Apps screen. It only pins to the Start screen.

Start Screen - Pin or Unpin App, Folder, or Drive in Windows 8

If you like, you can add and remove items from the Apps screen though. Be sure to read the warning in the tutorial below though.

On my ASUS N550, Windows 8.1, my taskbar icons are blank for any Windows Store apps. The icons are normal for other apps (like MS Office, Explorer, etc...).

It was working before and all of sudden, it stopped working! To start with, I thought it was the graphic card driver and I did all the updates but it didnt work.

In case you need to know; my computer is not connected with any business policy, I am just using my hotmail account.

Many thanks

On my Surface 3 Pro, in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 (tech preview), my taskbar icons are blank for any Windows Store apps. The icons are normal for other apps (like MS Office, Explorer, etc...).

I am betting it has something to do with a group policy. But I can't find anyone else out there with this problem. I've reimaged the device, upgraded from 8 -> 8.1 -> 10. Nothing has changed.
When I first got the Surface - it all worked great. I could see the icons fine. As soon as I joined the device to our corporate domain, that is when the problem started happening. I have tried connecting to the internet from home (thinking it was a network/firewall issue at work) but that did not solve it.

See the attached screenshot (it's a screenshot of Windows 10 - but the same thing was happening in Windows 8 and 8.1). It does this for any of the "apps".

Any ideas what group policies might affect this? Any other ideas?

I have a dell xps 710 that is running XP. Yesterday, I was attempting to update a driver and reboot my system and when it came back on all I say was my wallpaper and nothing else. I tried to get task manager to come up, but nothing. I tried a variety of ways to get something to come on, but still nothing. I went into Safe Mode...and still nothing. No icons..no nada.

I keep seeing a variety of things to do in order to try and get it to boot up and am really confused as to which one I should try.

When I put in my recovery disk I get a menu that says to pick the following options:

When I get the "welcome to set up" screen, should I choose

* To set up Windows XP now, press enter

* To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

Different people seem to be saying different things. I also read that you can go in and do the following:

* Boot from your XP Setup CD and enter the Recovery Console
* Run "Attrib -H -R -S" on the C:\Boot.ini file
* Delete the C:\Boot.ini file
* Run "Bootcfg /Rebuild"
* Run Fixboot

And lastly, my pc told me to put in the service pack 2 data disk. If I download the application at work and burn it to a disk..should I burn it as a bootable disk or just a data disk?

I would appreciate any help. Many thanks.

A:Blank start up screen/No icons

Try this to see if you can get it to boot..

Reverting back to a pre-Service Pack state may help resolve the issue. It's possible that some system files were damaged during the driver install.

Go to this page and scroll down to the section that instructs you on removing service packs from the recovery console.

Don't mess with your boot.ini, it's working fine. If it wasn't, you wouldn't be able to boot at all.

RE: Windows 8.

Something strange happened. I put my computer in sleep mode, as I have done many times. But this time, after I brought it back on, my Start Screen was missing all the tiles. AND, I can't put them back. When I click the "All Apps" button at the bottom, my screen just goes blank.

My desktop works, so I haven't lost anything. Just have a totally disfunctional Start Screen.

1) After boot, I'm at the Start Screen.

2) The screen isn't blank. It's got the background and the START in the corner. It's just blank of tiles. There are no tiles on my Start screen.

3) If I go to bottom and right click, I see "All Apps" and if I click that, the screen then goes blank, and the background changes. The screen is totally blank and nothing works except the side menus. There are no tiles listed and no text on the screen.

I've googled this problem and see this is a known issue, except with slightly different symptoms. But I can't get it resolved. All suggestions require going to Microsoft's Site, for this problem. They say that you have to use the hotfix. I contacted Microsoft, from that site and they sent me an email with a link that just takes me back to the site.

I've run SCF and it found no problems.

I have gone through a complete update, using Windows update and it didn't fix the problem. Need a solution to this.

I can open programs via ctrl+alt+delete and the new task window only. I cannot right click on the desktop either. I have run malware and antivirus scans and they all return no findings.

I'm using Windows 2000. To make a long story short, when I opened my desktop yesterday, no desktop icon appeared and there was also no START bar/menu. In other words, what I got was a plain blank black screen with only the mouse pointer (which, by the way, responds as I move the mouse ).
Here are some more details:
- though the mouse responds with movement, I CANNOT get the options "Active Desktop, Arrange Icons, Refresh, Properties, etc" that usually appear when you do a right-click on the desktop. THis just doesnt happen.
- I could, however, launch Task Manager when doing a Ctrl+Alt+Del. From here, I could launch applications when clicking the "New Task" button. I've tried opening the usual applications that I use like MS Office, etc. and goodthing I was able to open them. So im not sure what the problem is since I can open applications via the long route
- I've tried rebooting and starting in "Safe Mode" but same problem. NO icons, no Start bar, etc.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this? Was anything corrupted? What do I need to check?

Any input would be very appreciated. Thanks!!!!

I have upgraded to windows 10 from 8.1 and been using it for the last week now with no problems.
Today, during a mandatory update my pc went blue screen and said it had to restart.
Once it restarted it updated and booted fine.
However after the update I realized that my start menu stopped working.
If I press it nothing shows up. It is the same with my search menu.
Also none of my taskbar icons will work like the volume and notifications.
I have searched the internet and tried all the solutions provided like windows powershell and uninstalling antivirus and restarting explorer but nothing seems to work for me.
I can't reformat and clean install at the moment because it's really inconvenient for me and have some important files and big programs that I can't back up.

Can anyone please provide me a solution for this bug?
Is there anyway I can reinstall the last update again manually?
Or if I revert back to win 8.1 would this problem still persist?
I can't afford to lose anything since I am away and need my computer for work.

Having displayed the 'Welcome' screen during power-up, my computer (Dell D0926 Dimension 2400) then proceeds to my desktop (the picture that I chose, rather than, for example, a black or blue blank screen). There are a few egg timers, and the arrow is present, but no icons appear whatsoever.

I've tried a few things but none of the following seem to work. Ctrl-Alt-Dlt has no effect. Pressing F8 during start-up and choosing 'Safe mode' takes me to an option of going into either 'administrator' or 'charlie allen', but having tried both of them I end up in each case with a black screen with safe mode in the bottom two corners, but am unable to do anything from there.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help!

A:I've lost all icons and files, desktop is blank, start menu blank

Run the unhide.exe utility. (i think it has been updated to handle this, but:

After running the unhide tool you may still be missing most of your start menu shortcuts? They can be found in a folder named smtmp inside:

(XP)- C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp
(W7)- C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\Local\Temp
These will be there unless you have removed temp files / folders

There might be three numbered folders inside C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp folder. The folders will be numbered 1, 2 and 4.

Inside the 1 folder is a folder named ?Programs.? This folder should be copied / pasted to (using XP) to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu, which will already have a folder named Programs but it is safe to overwrite it since Windows will replace the subfolders without creating duplicates.

Inside the 2 folder are the quick launch items specific for the user. Select ALL of these shortcuts and copy / paste to (using XP) C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch.

Inside the 4 folder are the desktop items that should be copied to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop.

For Windows 7 users, the all users start menu is C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and the all users desktop folder i... Read more

Can anyone tell me why Microsoft pushed these Store Apps out and then screwed them up? I have some installed which work fine, but when trying to install others - they won't open. Suggestions from corrupted user account to sync problems to etc to etc are being offered by Microsoft but there seems to be no solid explanation. This along with the real mess up on Update 1 for many users make me wonder who is in control of Windows. I have, in the past, been a defender of Microsoft, but I am rapidly changing my mind. Shouldn't they think of their users? Or is it that they just don't have to?

If you have one you can try a system restore to a time before this happened. You could also try down loading the ISO from MS and doing a in-place repair install. Windows 10 ISO Download - Windows 10 Forums
To do the in-place repair mount the ISO by double clicking on it. Then look for the install.exe and clicking on it. This will repair Windows 10 without you loosing anything and hopefully fixing your problem.

If you've installed any programs since installation then there is almost certainly going to be a restore point (unless you told it to stop making restore points).

If you haven't added any programs to the OS is there much to be lost from a new clean install?

I would try the repair install again and see if anything changes this time round but it seams like a clean install is the only solution.

However, once I have my start screen organized the way I like, I find that within groups icons tend to 'shift' positions randomly - which is irritating.

Just wondering if someone has a way to 'lock' them so once they are in position - one would think MS would have thought of that already - thanks!

Hmmm - noticed something interesting - I am on a dual monitor set-up and when I open the start screen on a different monitor the organization of the start screen changes. Maybe that is why it is not an option (?) ...

A:Windows 8 Start Screen - Can the icons be locked?

Hi rlaw77. Welcome to EightForums.

Different brand monitors? Different resolutions? 8 is resolution specific.

I have Windows XP and a Dell Dimension E521 I have been trying remove Antimale Defender from my computer. First i could not remove it with Malwarebytes because it would not let me open the program or start the computer in any three of the safe modes I have scanned with McAfee and it removed trojans virus but the Antimale Defender was still there. I was able to remove some trojans with Spybot as well. I also was able to remove some virus's with SuperAntiSpyware. The last thing i did using SuperAntiSpyware was select to restart in Safemode through the SuperAntiSpyware program. Now my computer goes to a blank screen when i restart. If try any of the safe modes it loads the drivers and stops at Windows\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys

A:How to restore original Windows 8 icons to start screen

Hello Lovelf, and welcome to Eight Forums.

It depends on if you "unpinned" or "uninstalled" the apps from the Start screen.

If you only "unpinned" them, then you could just open the "Apps" screen, select the app, and "Pin to Start".
Start Screen - Pin or Unpin App, Folder, or Drive in Windows 8

If you "uninstalled" the apps, then you could reinstall the app from "Your Apps" in the Store.....

Apps - Install Metro Apps from Windows 8 Store
.....or search for the apps in the Store to install them again.

Windows Store - Search for Apps
Hope this helps,

Got a weird bug that's just happened:

This happened after I uninstalled all my metro apps this morning, rebooted then reinstalled them. Chrome also updated in the meantime.

They're the only icons that are broke so clearly something has happened between now and then to stop icons displaying properly for new programs.

Is it worth rebuilding icon cache? Not sure the icons for metro are the same as filetype icons in Explorer though.

A:Some App icons in Metro All Apps screen missing

I tried deleting the icon cache file file but it didn't fix it.
I also tried installing a new software and it too did not get an icon created in the menu.
However, if I pin it to start menu the app's icon works there.

My problem is similar to the well know Windows 7 Black Screen as referenced by Prevx, though different. When I boot my Windows 7 computer, the login screen appears as always. Following entering the password for default user,
the screen will give the impression of login, but the final result is a plain black screen with the cursor only. The black screen appears indefinitely and the Windows GUI never appears. The only available option from booting in normal mode with this is Ctrl-Alt-Del
(Task Manager). From analyzing another computer with Windows 7 Professional, my Task Manager is missing the following user processes: dwm.exe, explorer.exe, and taskhost.exe. Additionally, it is missing the following system processes (possibly irrelevant):
spoolsv.exe and wmiprvse.exe.
When I attempt to start a new process using Windows Task Manager, an error message will appear saying “Windows Task Manager has stopped working” and forces you to close Windows Task Manager. This includes starting
any process such as cmd or explorer.
I attempted to boot into safe mode.
The result was the same as above. Then I attempted booting into safe mode with command prompt. This showed some hope. Following authentification from the login screen, the command prompt appears with the same blank screen with a cursor behind it. Initially
I attempted to run msconfig.msc to run a clean startup. System Configuration Utilities opens briefly then displays the error same... Read more

#2 Alt-CTRL-Del
  You have know your desktop
#3 Go on add-remove programme

Lately, the icons on my desktop, start menu, and explorer have been appearing as blank pieces of paper (see below). I have no idea what is happening or why, but they appear like this whenever I log, restart, boot into safe mode, etc... it is doing this with all icons that are not OS-based (my computer, recycle, folders, etc...), have custom made icons (.ico), or are from Linux-based programs (such as GnuCash). I can however, open the shortcut or .exe with an icon editor/creator and view the icon metadata.

I looked up the problem on these forums, but they were never solved and dropped off uncompleted. I've also checked on various other websites, and the only similar problems I came across were on older versions of Windows, who's solutions were outdated and irrelevant to Vista.

I appreciate any help. Thank you,

Just upgraded WIndows Vista to Windows 7 from a download. The installation appeared to be fine but all of the icons on the desktop have lost their pictures and none of the start menu icons are showing any design nor do they work. I've tried deleting the icon cache and restarting but that hasn't worked. Any ideas?

A:All icons in start menu and desktop are showing blank

hi have you looked at brinks tutorial How to Rebuild the Icon Cache in Windows 7 Icon Cache - Rebuild - Windows 7 Forums

If one or more of your icons are not displaying correctly, or that your icon cache is corrupted, then you might consider rebuilding the icon cache to reset and reload the icon images into the icon cache.

The icon cache is located at the hidden system folder location below:

Hey Guys,

I am Running XP Pro sp2, and recently after an Installation of The japanese language pack, I tried to change my region settings to japan for installation of some Software i have, When the region change began, all seemed well, Then My computer just shut down, it may have been a power surge, we have had some recently but It was Mid day so i couldn't really tell, I thought ahh hell, but what could happen you know? so i turn my Pc back on, everything looks to be booting normally Windows opens up, i see my Desktop Wallpaper, and my cursor, but thats it, I panicked a bit at first, and waited to see if anything would come up.

After 20 minutes it was still the same, the cursor works perfectly no lagging or anything but there is just nothing there, When i rebooted to try and start up in last good Config i couldn't as soon as i get to the Safe mode menu my Keyboard shut off, i could not move the highlight to choose anything, so i reboot again a few times and still no success, I was using a Usb keyboard so i went to the other Pc in the house, and grabbed the older Ps2 Keyboard to give that a shot, funnily enough that works fine, i can get into any of the safe modes but they are all the same blank desktop no icons no bar no nothing.

After reading a bit on this site i have tried getting into task manager, to no avail i can only access the ctrl+alt+delete menu in safe mode with networking, but when i try to open the task manager it just goes blank again, i am startin... Read more

My girlfriends computer is really old, I know it's a pretty old Dell with 1GB RAM; I don't have the rest of the specs in front of me, I'm at home right now.

She has plenty of problems.
First, when she logged on to a username it would just load a blank screen with no icons or no start menu. Of course I would hit Ctrl + Alt + Dlt and then run a new task and type explorer.exe to bring it up.

That solution worked, but I am looking for a temporary solution, so we don't have to keep doing that each time.

Another problem is that now whenever she logs in and selects a username, it instantly logs off and it's a repeating process, she can't get on. That is for one of the usernames, if we choose the second username then it works fine and desktop items show.

For some reason that one Windows XP username is messing up a lot.

I know the smart solution would be to upgrade PC's but unfortunately it's not mine, so I have to work with what they have. Is there anything I can do?

Any tips for speeding it up would be great too. I ran a defragmentation, and I downloaded CCleaner and fixed up the registry and stuff but anything else you can suggest?

I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:

(edit...vimeo was taking forever to process)

It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop. Has anyone seen this effect, and if so is there some registry key somewhere that is needed to fix it?

A:Screen fades in steps between apps/desktop/start screen

I know you have turned off adaptive brightness and it's sensor...but that looks to me like it's actually still running in the hardware.

I recently had to refresh my laptop which meant re-upgrading from 8.0 to 8.1 with all the updates involved. Everything seemed to be working fine then I was prompted to do an update for NVidia GeForce Experience. I don't know if that's what caused the following issue or not but now when I go to the Start screen and click the arrow down to see my apps - the apps overlap the start screen making it impossible to see anything. It's as though the start screen isn't moving up when the apps appear and so I see both screens at the same time. Any ideas on what is causing this and how I might fix it? Any help would be much appreciated.

Ok...seems I still had more updates to go (I guess 219 weren't enough lol). Have restarted and all seems good now. Very weird... (I miss XP!)

i have recently upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8, the start screen apps/buttons are not working, they have never worked, when i click on one it just pops up for 1 second and comes back out, it refuses to load them, i have looked online and tried editing my resolution or whatever people have said to do, but none of it seems to work, what do i do?

A:Start screen apps not working

There are some things to check initially - UAC must be enabled, the Windows Firewall Service must be running, and you must not be logged on with the built-in Administrator account. You want to make sure all of the above is set before doing any other tshooting.

My Windows 8 install was working fine until after some updates installed on 11/16/2012. Since then, I'm unable to start Apps from the Start screen, access the Charms bar, etc. I can get to my desktop by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc to launch Task Manager. Once there, I can use my desktop apps, run commands, etc. I have uninstalled the updates, but my Start screen still isn't working.

My problem seems the same or similar to what is described by "Troubleshooting steps to use when Windows apps won't start" at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/windows-apps-wont-start/. I have tried the suggested ideas except for "Switch to a local account." I am using a "Microsoft" account, and I would like to convert to a local account. I know how to do this via Users in PC Settings, but I can't get to PC Settings from the Start screen. (I have tried accessing via the Charms bar by moving my mouse to the upper-right corner, pressing WinKey + C, and also pressing WinKey + I; nothing works.)

Any suggestions on how I can convert my user account from a Microsoft account to a Local account? For example, can this be done via the desktop or with a command that I can run from the command prompt. Note, I have also tried clicking "Make changes to my account in PC Settings" within Control Panel's User Accounts screen. When I click it though, nothing happens.

Thanks for any tips.

A:Start Screen and Apps Not Responding

Hey Matt,

Have you figured this out yet? If not I will see what I can find out for you. I have already checked for a command line method of converting from a microsoft to a local, but no luck so far.
