Computer so slow-takes forever to do anything!

Q: Computer so slow-takes forever to do anything!

My computer takes an extremely long time to boot up. I know I may have too many things opening at startup, but when I run msconfig I get an errorbox that says it cannot find the file.

Also it's not just slow on boot up but all the time. Takes forever to open applications and even when typing in word or any application, even techguys.org messages, there is a delay from when I type to when the text appears on the screen. Seems like every click results in an hourglass.

I have Win 2000 with a Pentium III processor. I have a 40 gig hard drive with just under 6 GB's free space.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Computer so slow-takes forever to do anything!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

There's evidence of a hack so please check this by running TDSSKillerDownload TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.

Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.

Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

"%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l report.txt

Now click Start Scan.
If Malicious objects are found, ensure Cure is selected then click Continue > Reboot now.
Click Close
Finally press Report and copy and paste the contents into your next reply. If you've rebooted then the log will be found at C:\

My computer recently started to take so long to boot up into windows and when it does it takes such a long time to get to the desktop.  For example..when I turn on the computer it goes to the Microsoft Windows Screen and stays there for about2 or 3 minutes...then it goes to a blank black screen for maybe a minute...then finally to the desktop where it still takes another 2 minutes to get things to load and work.  I sure need to know how to solve this problem.  By the way it is a Windows  XP.--

A:Computer is very slow and takes forever to boot up...what is wrong??

Step 1

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Clean.
Confirm each time with Ok.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner\AdwCleaner[S0].txt as well.
Step 2

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
Step 3.

Please download HitmanPro. to your desktop.
HitmanPro (32bit)
HitmanPro (64bit)
Launch the program by double clicking on HitmanPro.exe. (Windows Vista/7 users right click on the HitmanPro icon and select run as administrator).

For the past month my computer has gone downhill. First of all by having a very inconsistent internet speed. I know that my computer is the problem because my roommate doesn't have any problems with the connection. I also noticed that it has been slower and slower... and today I tried shutting it down and it took about 3 to 4 minutes to complete. Being confused, I opened it up again and shut it down again to see, with the same result.

I'm using an Acer Extensa with a double core (2x 1.8 ghz) and 3 gigs or rams.

I have not installed / removed anything to the computer.

Hello,

I've purchased a new Toshiba laptop today. And since puttng it to use it's been very slow, I've installed all upgrades which hasn't helped and I've tried installing windows 10 but it's been running for 2 hours now and it's just gone from 12% to 13%. Is this a known issue?

Thanks in advance!

A:Satellite C70-C-10T - Very slow, installing Win10 takes forever

When you buy new notebook the first thing you should do is to make recovery media. It is very important. You should have recovery image back-up.
If something goes wrong you can use this media and install original recovery image again.

Every new notebook is slow at the beginning. What you need is OS optimization. Remove all useless stuff from the system and check windows start-up.

Many applications that you actually don’t need start with windows and start-up takes a long time.

It's been a hot week down here in California, and it seems to have taken it's toll on my old Dell D600. It's had it's problems before (a LOT!), and it's acting up again.

Two hard drives have failed in it already, and I've just recently revived my Toshiba 40GB that died from a bearing error. It seems to be suffering from the heat again, and it has failed.
Here's some screenshots I took of the BSODs, please help me sort this out!

The first BSOD occured after some heavy performance problems, I rebooted and was met with it. The second and last one are the results of subsequent boot attempts. The last two were taken just a few minutes ago. It managed to boot, but took forever to. I was barely able to open firefox (massive "lag") when it gave me the fourth one.

Hello sheehka,

If you still require assistance, you currently have 2 Anti Virus programs installed which is never a good idea and could be part of your problem. More than 1 Anti Virus can cause conflicts and confusion between the AV programs as well as system instability. Please choose and run only 1 and uninstall the other via the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

Run a new scan with dds.scr and post the dds.txt and new attach.txt

What TSR programs are running on your computer? It's probably one of these that's hanging and preventing Windows from closing.

Hello,Do you know the specs for the system? Processor, RAM, Graphics. I would advise doing some general cleaning, to this end I would suggest using http://www.ccleaner.com/ to clean us some space, http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag to defrag the system and http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html to do some final optimizing. Remember to back up important files first before using.

Hello TSF

youassisted me in removing the Hijackthis bug from my desktop a few weeks age. Now I'm working on my daughters laptop. Her complaint is that it runs slow. I'vegone ahead and taken some of the steps from the Hijackthis fix, installed Avast Antivirus, Zonealarm firewall and Spybot to get her security up to date. What can be done to seep up her machine. She's running Windows XP media center edition version 2002 and Service Pack 2 on a Dell Inspiron l6000.
You were a great help last time and look forward to working with you again.

But recently my computer is taking longer and longer to start up each time i boot it. Now it takes about 10-15 minutes to start up.
I tried running check Disk, i tried to defrag my drives, and i tried deleting every application and software i didn't need. But still i can't get the computer t start up quicker.
I don't know if it will help but ill post my system specs, and maybe someone will have some idea of what is wrong with my computer.

It would help if you could give us more specific info about the errors as well as any error messages you are getting. Exactly what does your computer do,or not do,that you are trying to fix?

Hello all! I have a little problem and I wonder if anyone here knows what's going on....
When I shutdown my computer it can take anywhere to 2-5 minutes. I used to have startup problems but I cleaned my registry and defragged so it will boot quickly. I have ran Malware Bytes, SuperAntispyware Free Edition, and CCleaner on my system. I deleted all the threats that occured but I'm still having trouble. I recently ran HijackThis and a error message popped up saying the following:
" For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.
If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type:
notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as 'hosts.' (with quotes), and reboot.
For Vista: simply, exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, choose 'Run as administrator'."

After I click 'OK' the HiJackThis log pops up and this is what it says:

Hiya

Are you still having this problem? If so, do the following:
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.
Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
Click the Scanning Control tab.
Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
Close browsers before scanning.
Scan for tracking cookies.
Terminate memory threats before quarantining.

Hello everyone,

I own a 2005 Sony Vaio laptop, w/Windows XP. For the longest time, my computer has taken forever to start up. I figured this might be because there are too many programs loading when it starts up. I went to this website http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php to see which applications I could remove. I tried to remove Norton's Anti-Virus, QuickTime, and a few others. I was told to re-start the computer so the changes would take effect. However, that didn't work. When the computer re-booted, I saw a screen that said I could either use the Normal Startup, the Diagnostic Startup, or the Selective Startup. I've chosen the Selective & the Normal Startups on different occasions and nothing happened. I know a few of these programs are Trojans. Are they stuck of my computer forever?

I've also tried a System Restore. Didn't work.

Thank you in advance.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L505 running Windows 7 Home Premium, 3GB ram, 2.1GHz Intel Core2 Duo. I bought it new 11/10. I've had increasing problems over the past several months - IE(9) often crashes, especially when I try to open a PDF from the web. Sometimes other browsers can't open PDFs either. Sometimes IE just processes and doesn't open any webpage. I'm continually asked to install Google Toolbar, and it won't accept "don't allow". Sometimes I get a message that a program has tried to change my home page. I've ran several programs to try and fix things - Ad-Aware, Spybot, System Mechanic Premium, System Suite, and Driver Genius. I usually installed, ran, and uninstalled these utilities in hopes they wouldn't conflict with each other. I used AVG from the time I bought the PC until it expired this month andI switched to Kasperskys. I suspect trying a variety of products only made matters worse or my obsession with Jenkat Games has wrecked havoc with the system.

When it started taking over 2 min to start up and over 3 min to shut down, I decided to turn to you. When I ran HJT, I got an error message - see the message and host images attached as hjterror.doc. I clicked ok and hjt went ahead and ran.
When I ran the GMER scan, it scanned for 40 hrs straight before I finally clicked on 'stop' and saved the file. At one point it was scanning the C:\ windows folder and 12 hrs later it was scanning C:\games so I think ... Read more

Hi-have been struggling with my system taking 2-3 minutes to find drivers for any memory stick I plug in to any of 3 USB ports on my Acer 1810T. When the process finally completes, the transfer speeds are about 1MB/s or less.

Another (possibly related?) problem is when I insert any SD card in the dedicated slot for the first time, everything is fine. Once I remove and either re-insert (or insert a different card), nothing appears. I get a message saying "process is already in memory". I have to reboot to get things working again.

Any advice greatly appreciated,

Fugue

A:USB Sticks slow transfer speeds, system takes forever to load drivers

Hello fugue,

Are you properly ejecting all devices? There should be an option to safely remove devices.

Do you have all windows updates installed?

Go into device manager and look for any exclaimation marks. If you see some, update those drivers.

Good day to any readers of this posting,

I received a JAVA error on my desktop and submitted this error information to JAVA; however, the response they e-mailed back to me was that I had contracted a new bug and they gave it a number for its name. Why not my name, who knows. LOL! We have to maintain humor, while dealing with ding-dong dang darn bratty technology, do we not? I did a full scan on my computer with Vipre Anti-Virus (found and cleaned 2 bugs with 8 traces) and Stopzilla (found no infestations). I wiped the empty space 35 times, along with both cleaners with Ccleaner. Additionally, I scanned with Registry Booster, Speed Up My PC and FixCleaner. My computer still takes forever to download an Internet page in pogo.com and game3.pogo.com. If it should happen to load and I get into a room, it freezes up within a few minutes. Does anyone know a good diagnostic tool that could assist me, while on this PC journey or an answer that does not involve more programs that do not seem to have an effect on this problem?

Tomorrow leaves the door wide-open for great potential.

Have a phenomenal day!

Hello -

As before, you seem well protected, and nothing is apparent in your HJT log. Do you do regular system maintenance, like deleting temp files and cookies, and defrag?

Do other programs access the internet freely? Such as updating your protection tools or using your email program?

Do you use an alternative browser such as Firefox or Opera? (You should, but that's for another tale) If so, do they experience the same slowness?

What sort of internet connection do you have? Broadband, dialup, modem, router, etc....

HJT is only one of several analysis tools at our disposal. Let's see if another one can find something amiss.

Hello All-

My Laptop (running XP) will boot up to the login screen (which now takes about 5 minutes when it used to be less than 1 minute). Once I enter my login information and hit enter -- it stalls for about 5 minutes and then returns to the "ctrl-alt-del login screen".

I have 2 "profiles" and can successfully log in to one under the administrator login -- but I don't get a start button and the windows look "different". For example, the expand/minimize/close buttons when I run the task manager look more like how I remember windows screens looking years ago -- if that makes any sense.

Any ideas?

After I reformatted my hard drive, it's been taking longer to copy files. When I transfer music from iTunes to my iPod, it takes longer than it would've before the reformat. Also, when I copy files from and to my external hard drive, that takes longer. For example, it would take about 1 min or less to copy a 700 mb .avi movie file from my computer to the external hdd. But now, it takes about 4~5 min. I never installed or downloaded anything that would purposely expedite the process. Plus, since this hard drive has no viruses (100% sure), and more available memory, I would assume a faster process.
Any suggestions or ideas?
Thanks

My computer randomly freezes (even as I was writing this post it froze for a while and i had to wait for it to come back to life). I am not sure why this is happening as it has been great for over a year. Also the when I put it to SLEEP (not hybrid or hibernation) it takes a LONG time (over 2 mins to hours).

I have restarted my computer 5 times yesterday and a couple times today, because it just stops working. If i open Task manager I get (NOT RESPONDING).. which has only happened this week.. not sure why.

Even by right clicking on My Computer to see my specs all I can see is
Installed Memory: Not Available (Should say 12gb)
Processor: Not Available (should say 2.0ghz)

it's happened twice that Windows Explorer is not responding (as in the windows viewer not the browser)

I am running 2013 AVG Free Anit Virus - and it's never been an issue.

Please help!

I have just recently installed a printer (BROTHER DCP-145C) and when trying to open 'My Computer' it takes forever ( approximately 2 - 5 minutes) to display anything I've already tried
-stopping the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)
-Unchecking the box 'Automatically search for network folders and printers
-Disconnecting the printer

and none of them have worked, I have had this problem once before but I forget how I solved it that time it would be greatly appreciated if you could help.

EDIT - I managed to fix it myself by fragmenting the hard drive and cleaning the registry, probably should have thought to do that before asking this question but whatever.

And "cleaning the registry" may create other problems.
Most of us here, do NOT and will not suggest in using any registry cleaner.

My daughter has a Gateway LX6810-01 computer. It is running Windows 7 and takes forever to boot up. I'm wondering if one of these items is slowing down the Startup and could either or both be unchecked from the Startup list in msconfig.
1) NVIDIA NVRAID - she does NOT have a RAID setup
2) Logitech Gaming Framework - she does have a Logitech G510 keyboard. She does play WOW so I'm guessing this should probably stay on.

Im not even sure if it CAN boot, to be honest. It hasn't done so yet, just stays on the loading screen. I have spent all night trying literally evrything to get rid of this whatever you want to call it. After absolutely nothing else worked, I downloaded TDSSFix and it detected nothing. I turned off the computer and started it up normally, and it told me something about needing a type of boot to work. I have no idea why I decided toturn off my laptop before removing it, but I did and now it won't boot. I am seriously considering giving up and smashing the computer because this is way too stressful for me right now. Can someone please, in a way that's as simple as possible, explain to me what I need to do to get this all to stop?
