whatever icon on desktop is clicked, recycle bin is highlighted

Q: whatever icon on desktop is clicked, recycle bin is highlighted

Hello everyone,

Whenever any icon on the desktop is (single) clicked, the recycle bin gets highlighted. If you double click, the recycle bin gets opened.

The shutdown menu only allows you to log off, all the other options are not selectable.

This computer is using Windows XP.

I'm sorry I can't really give any more details - it's someone over on the other side of the country who is having this problem and they aren't very computer literate....

Thanks in advance for any help,

Preferred Solution: whatever icon on desktop is clicked, recycle bin is highlighted

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You have permissions issues going on. Probably from an infection of some sort. The easiest way to fix it is to create another account and use that one. You'll still be able to get to anything in the my documents folder of your other account, but I wouldn't delete it until you've gotten everything off there you need for sure.

I would really like to delete the recycle bin icon on my desktop, as I have it on ObjectDock. I found a way on this page, but then when I clicked the recycle bin in the ObjectDock, nothing would happen. Is there a way to get rid of the icon but still have it accessable?

A:Solved: Deleting the recycle bin icon from desktop?

That registry tweak is for the default icon. You will need to restore the default icon and have ObjectDock relinquish control of the icon for the change to take effect.

when I start up my wife's computer (win 7) and it's finished loading,

I three programs to try to hopefully fix this problem even

I'm having this strange problem.
I'm helping a friend's netbook (Samsung N150) running Windows 7. Upon booting up, i tried to open any program shortcuts on the desktop but multiple windows prompt me whether i want to delete the shortcuts. Any files or folders i clicked it happens too. Hence halting up the system.

At first i thought it was some kind of virus or malware, so booted to safe mode to have it scan. But surprisingly, the problem still persist in safe mode. So i ran some live cds and managed to clean the system. Booted up normally and the problem's still there. Did last known good config, system restore, checked and updated the drivers but to no avail. So i resort to the last method. Re install windows.

Backup everything, format the drives and did a clean installation of Windows 7. After booting up for the first time, and guessed what? The problem was still there. I've ran out of ideas. I was concluding it as a hardware problem.

Any help will greatly appreciated.

I had a problem deleting an older version of Firefox. The Firefox Setup .exe file was stuck in the Recycle Bin, it wouldn't delete and it wouldn't restore. Believing that the Recycle Bin was corrupt, I used this method from the DOS prompt:

rd /s /q C:\$Recycle.bin

I refreshed my Desktop and when I clicked on the Recycle Bin. While the file appeared to be missing, the Recycle Bin would not load properly so I restarted my computer.

Now when I click on the Recycle Bin icon, it points to my entire computer (exactly the same as clicking on "Computer" off the Start Menu) instead of the Recycle Bin folder.

How can I restore the Recycle Bin icon so that it shows only the contents of the Recycle Bin?

My gratitude to any and all who can help me.

An update - I right-clicked on the desktop, left-clicked on 'personalize', and on the left-hand side, there was a place to 'change desktop icons' - then it opened another window which showed various icons. The checkbox for the recycle bin somehow became unchecked. So, I checked it and it re-appeared on the desktop!

Hey Gang,

I just got a phone call from a tennis buddy concerning his XP computer. He says once every 4 or 5 startups he has an issue. And the issue is: Clicking on one icon on the desktop highlights all icons, and the computer basically acts like it is frozen, doesn't work. Ctrl+alt+del does not respond. He has to shut off computer and reboot. So far rebooting has 'cured' the problem every time.

I can't find anything in MS KB concerning this, but it does sound a bit like either malware related, or a corrupt windows file. However, to me the puzzling thing is that it is not consistant. Only once every 4 or 5 boots, perhaps a driver??? I really don't know as I have not come accross this issue before.

Do you have any ideas on where to go with this? Again, I have not seen the computer first hand, yet. But if I need to give it a visit I will.

A:All Icons On Desktop Get Highlighted

Your right, that sounds like a faulty driver or a corrupt windows file.

To fix a new problem I would have to be infront of the computer to see the problem first hand and then think of a resolution on how to fix it.

Right click on your desktop and choose, 'Properties' then click on the 'Desktop' tab at the top of the little window. Then choose, 'Customize Desktop...' then click on the 'Web' tab at the top. Then un-check the little boxes on there, that's the 'My current homepage' one and the 'Lock desktop items' one, then just OK everything and you should be done.

Note: It may take some time (Say 10 - 20 seconds) for the process to complete, so don't click the 'X' if it looks like it's froze up. It's thinking.

Hi. While browsing I got distracted and clicked spontaneously on a malicious link. It is called "Your videoplayer needs to be updated". After a while I checked the window of My Computer, and discovered that the icon of the secondary HDD is invisible. I got scared that something really wrong happened and immediately started a virus scan by both Norton and Malwarebytes. But nothing was found.
Obviously the malicious code that was downloaded to my pc is still unrecognisable by antiviruses, because of this I opted to reboot the OS to the factory settings. But it looks like the factory settings on my computer are not real, because even after the recovery the HDD icon is still missing.
I have a VAIO with WIn7. Can someone please tell me if there is any way to reboot my computer to real factory settings, or the Win7 reboot is not what it used to be on WinXP with reboot CD?
As far as I remember the Win CD reboot was called something like "pc recovery in low formatting".
Is there the same option of low formatting for WIn7 from the HDD?

A:Desktop Icons Suddenly Are All Highlighted

I don't think they are actually "highlighted" just with a black or white backbround beside them? If this is the case, you've disabled one of your visual effects that blends the icon color in with your backgroud. To enable:

Right click on "My Computer" icon on desktop>Properties>Advanced>Visual Effects>Check the use drop shadows for icon lables on desktop>apply.

The "highlight should be gone". It's possible that you will need to restart your computer.

This problem started just last night, I was working on changing the three audio jacks into 5.1 surround outputs. After I was done, anytime I clicked on the normal volume icon, either right or left click, it pops up the "Line In Properties" dialog.

On left click, it also shows the normal volume adjuster, but hides it after about 2 secs, preventing me from sliding to adjust volume. I am also inhibited from opening the Playback Devices, Recording Devices, and Sound options that show up with a right click of the icon.

As it is extremely frustrating to have to navigate through the Control panel every time I want to change sound levels, I am hoping someone can help. Thanks in advance!

A:Line In Dialog when Tray Volume Icon is Clicked

Well, a little more changing of sound options shows that if I change my mic input (which the L/R Surround channel in 5.1) back into the Line In designation, the pop up problem is gone. I guess since I don't use 5.1 often, this is an ok fix, but if someone can fix it completely I would be much obliged.

I have looked in her task manager to see if there is a hung program but nothing seems to jump out as not normal. Both Outlook and Adobe show as being closed.

Anyone see something like this before?

When I close a program the desktop icon remains highlighted, until I mouse click elsewhere on the desktop. This only presents a real problem when I log off of my dial up server and the icon remains highlighted. If I forget to un-highlight it, my phone won't ring, although my answering machine will pick up the call. (strange, huh?) How can I solve this problem? I know my computer didn't always do this, but it's been doing it for quite a while now.

A:desktop icons remain highlighted after program closed

I have no idea why your phone would not ring simply because a desktop icon is highlighted. That highlighting thing is normal, I believe. Mine has always done that. The last used icon remains highlighted until another one, or as you've mentioned, the blank desktop, is clicked. Simply having it highlighted, however, does not open, or mean that the program is open (unless the desktop is set to open/run icon programs from a single-click instead of the double-click). I can highlight any icon, and it will stay highlighted until something else is clicked.

But I have no idea why a simply highlighted dial-up server icon would interfere with your phone ringing. Mine can be highlighted, but it does not interfere.

I changed my Recycle bin icon through Desktop Icon Settings and for some reason, the icon doesn't change when it's full/empty and just kind of stays the same. It also reverts back to the original icon when I restart my computer.

My RC build is 7260.

I tried personalization / desktop icon settings / recycle bin icon box is UN-checked however it is faded, and won't except being checked.
I tried system restore with no dates to fall back on.
I have no idea what happened.... it turned up gone, and I'm lost.

Thank you.

The recycle bin icon on my desktop always shows empty even when I delete a file unlike previous Win OS which as you deleted the recycle bin icon changed to show it had files in it. Is there some setting or something to make it change when you delete a file.

Thanks for any help.
