Acer laptop system password error. May be virus/malware

Q: Acer laptop system password error. May be virus/malware

Could use help on this one. I am trying to fix my buddies Acer Aspire 5735 and I get past the main password and get into the utilities screen and receive a system password. I have tried for over an hour different passwords but to no avail. I tried to just get into the boot menu which i can. But every option available starts up and then restarts the computer. None work not safe mode enable boot log restore system services last known config nothing. I tried running a vista recovery disc wont load. I tried to run a new installation disc nothing. I even called Acer tech support and they said they dont put them passwords on their machine and a program had too.

Any suggestion what I can do or what could be causing this issue?

Thank you Ray

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,
I am having trouble with an old ACER laptop...
I had it formatted 2 years ago to clean it up because I bought a new laptop (I stopped using ACER laptop).
I started using the ACER laptop last week (to see if it was still working...), installed a few programs, but I started o get annoyed because the laptop is too slow! I took a look at the CPU usage and it is always 100%. I installed AVG antivirus and SUPERantispyware to see if the laptop has some sort of virus or malware. The AVG antivirus doesn´t run because it is always interrupted immediately after the scan starts (I tried to scan 5 times and it was always interrupted). SUPERantispyware detected trojan related do Drivereasy (which I didn´t install!!) and some adwares. I selected SUPERantispyware to delete the items and run a new scan, SUPERantipyware didn´t detect anything else.
I installed Windows Repair program to check if it would say what was the problem with my laptop, it suggested to repair a few things (I believe it said some system files were missing) but the laptop performance didn´t improve...
And now, the internet is not working anymore!!!
One thing I think odd is the fact that the IOBIT uninstaller it doesn´t scan the laptop for leftovers (powerful scan) when removing a program...
Anyway... I believe my laptop has virus/malware and I don´t know what to do (!!!!), so I decided to come here and ask the experts for help...!!

Using Edge browser on Windows 10 I got this pop-up:

It has changed the browser default page setting so that when you kill Edge by task manager and restart it, it opens the same window again. I've tried disabling the network, but even with no internet access, when you start Edge it brings up the window. I ran Malwarebytes but it didn't find anything. I ran AdwCleaner, it also didn't find anything. It only affects Edge, IE is OK. Any help appreciated.

You can try this: Currently it seems to be not available to reset Microsoft Edge. we may choose to clear browser data under ...->Settings->Clear Browse Data, choose what to clear part.

CCleaner will allow you to view and control the startups and tasks for Windows and your browsers. If you can download CCleaner, do this:
Don't know how CCleaner will interact with Edge....

Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.
After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.
CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

Post the three lists mentioned below using CCleaner:

Open CCleaner and click on Tools. Choose Startups. On that page you will see a list of Windows Startups and at the top tabs for each browser and Scheduled Tasks.
At the bottom right of that page you will see a button when clicked will allow you to Copy and Paste the list of Windows Startups and Scheduled Tasks into your next

Hi, A close friend of mine just gave me her laptop and said she hasn't had it working in a long time, and that she would like me to fix it for her.
When I attempted to turn the machine on, It asked for a HDD password.
I'm assuming the machine was left turned off for long enough that the Cmos battery died, and when I restored power to it, the harddrive would have assumed it has been put into a new computer.

I also attempted to access the bios menu, but it is also protected with a password.

The warranty is well over by now so "tampering" with the device myself will prove no difference to a warranty.
We do not want to "send it in" for repair, because It would cost far to much for a task that would probably only take a number of minutes.

I have had a quick look for the Cmos battery, but it has been hidden pretty well... I don't want to pull the computer completely to pieces unless I really really have to...

Resetting the Cmos would probably not fix the problem anyway, because the password is actually set to the harddrive itself, so if you move it to another computer, it asks for password.
Is there a way we can return the machine to its factory settings, and restore ownership over the harddrive?

A:HDD Password on acer laptop

As far as I know, laptops store the password on a chip on the motherboard separate from the cmos chip, it is also stored on the hard drive when you set a hard drive password, it is against forum rules to help with passwords, sorry.

A friend brought over an Acer Laptop for me to look at. It will not boot. It requests an HDD password. He said he never set one up on the computer. He is a church youth pastor and my guess is that one of the young ones pulled a trick on him.

I went into the BIOS and, sure enough, it has HDD Password enabled. I tried to set the BIOS back to default, but that does not help. I tried to boot the computer to a live Linux disk, and the HDD Password message comes up before the disk can boot. Only by removing the Hard Drive can I boot with the live disk.

I assume I could replace the hard drive with another, but I think my friend wants the data on the computer.

I've written Acer, but, so far have not received an answer. I've also tried various possible passwords and, of course, that didn't work.

Any ideas?

I have an Acer laptop which has developed a problem:

Laptop spec:
Acer Aspire 4930G
Windows 7 Ultimate
4gb ram
250 hdd
Bought in 2008 but it's treating me as good as a new laptop.

The problem:
When I turn it on it goes through the start up process but when it get to the bit before I need to enter the password to log in, a blue screen with white text flashes on and then laptop restarts itself. The same process is going on and on without able to reach to the desktop screen.

I have tried and no success on the below:
F8 on start up (Tried to repair and use last known good configuration)
Put in Windoes 7 installer CD to repair (nothing comes up after I click repair, screen is on but waited ages and nothing happen).

I really dont want format my laptop as I have not back up all my files and documents and pictures (sadly I saved them in both C drive and D drive, which left me with no disk to format, else I would be happy to format it).

Some people suggest that it is the problem of graphic card, and some suggests it's cause by ram.

This problem is not just happen in windows 7, it happened on windows xp to some user back in 2008, which you can see from the below link. So I think this problem is not OS-specific.

I appreciate your suggestion and I am urgently need help because my exam is coming soon and I need to use my laptop T.T.

I found this kind of odd and aslo wanted to share my experience in the hopes of helping someone else out. When restarting an Acer computer (my model M5621), I pressed Alt+F10 to execute a system restore. When I tried to proceed with the system restore, it prompted me for a password. I had no clue what it was so I tried it blank to no avail. Researching with Google prompted me to use 000000 as the password and it did not work. I talked with Acer technical support and he told me that my partition is probably corrupt and I need to buy this restore disk (sigh). After speaking with them, I just tried my usual start-up password and voila it worked! Now, I got a nasty virus called the Windows Tool. It mimiced all the seemings of a virus scanner and showed a myriad of viruses on my computer in the hopes that I would buy their program. It disabled me from doing anything, etc. Started giving me BSODs AFTER I got rid of it, so I decided to restore my computer before trying hardware issues. I thought the virus/trojan/malware demon may have changed the password. Then after my computer was restored I saw that there was an empowering technology widget which let me set a password! I believe long, long, ago I may have set the password to my start up password, but I am unsure. Could a trojan go into my partition and change my recovery password? That thing was friggin' ugly, it tried to steal my steam account and all sorts of stuff. The main reason I am posting this is just so someo... Read more

A:Acer Empowering Technology Password when performing System Recovery

Well...you mention three variables which, IMO, could possibly account for any system problem.

a. Acer. I'm not being mean, but I have never thought that buying a system from any OEM manufacturer (Acer, HP, eMachines, etc.) where they install and do things their way...is one more possibly complicating factor that can be avoided by building my own systems. I'm not a laptop lover, so I can have my attitude and do straight installs of Windows without considering reoovery/restore mechanisms, atypical boot scenarios, and hidden partitions.

b. Malware...no need to elaborate on this, other than to say that (IMO) many persons who attempt to self-heal systems they have allowed to get infected...may not necessarily be very astute at recognizing and removing infections.

c. Hardware issues. Hard to troubleshoot without a methodical approach, IMO.

If you truly have resolved your system issues...a tip of the hat to you and thanks for posting...it may help someone out there and that's what many of us try to do, within the realm of what we know and what we choose to learn.

<<Could a trojan go into my partition and change my recovery password?>>

I am not smart enough about malware to answer that , but I will say that files become damaged every day...both as the result of malware and just in the process of normal computing. Since you've cited a known malware situation...I'd be tempted to blame it, whether it was a direct result or an indirect one...b... Read more

I am self taught on a Vista laptop over the past 5 years. Last year I was given an Acer 1640Z laptop which has the XP OS, and have kept it up to date for a relative. Today I pressed the wrong button which started to wipe the XP. I switched off immediately, however, I now cannot get it to boot up, or even boot from a Macrium Reflect rescue DVD. The message on screen is that the file is missing or corrupt,i.e.- Windows root\system 32\hal.dll

It looks like any remedy will be too technical for me (70yrs )

DO NOT THINK I have posted this in the incorrect forum, why I am posting here is the Acer laptop has an official sticker on it, quoting " Designed for Windows XP - Windows Vista Capable."

The question is can I convert the Acer from XP to Vista, since I still have the disks which came with the Dell Vista laptop when I bought it new ?

Hoping for some positive guidance in ths matter.

A:Acer Laptop XP system - crashed.

That error is a bad one to get because it indicates very low level corruption. You will have to reinstall XP. The hard drive will probably have to be reformatted. You can't use a copy of Vista that came with a dell on an Acer so unless you can find a retail copy of Vista you are stuck with XP or Linux. By now it will be too late to get the Vista disks from Acer but you can try.

Hey folks, thanks a ton in advance for any help or suggestions given. I guess my old account was deleted, but I previously joined/donated for some help received. Regardless, I have a friends Acer laptop I am attempting to help her restore as usable. Acer Aspire 6930Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5800 (2.0GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 cache)1244MB Mobile Graphics Accelerator 4500MHD3 GB DDR2320GB HDDWindows VistaWhen you boot it, it pretty much stays in the boot screen.....does no more. She got the computer from Best Buy, and they set up 3 recover disks. When you try to run the 1st of 3, I select the language....then a prompt comes up to ask me what I want to do. As you can see below, I cannot select "restore from backup". I then click to "restore to default" and then I get this error message......I searched the error message, and found others who've experienced the exact same issue. What they discovered is that the computer would not utilize the recovery disks if there was an existing partition. So the folks with the same problem as I, downloaded the Ultimate Boot Disk to recover their computers. When I do that, I got a message in BIOS saying "No operating system found".This whole message....I can follow directions very well, and I am a fairly familiar with computers....but not enough to solve this one. I appreciate anyones time thrown in to try and find a fix or a final resolution (if the HD is fubar). Darren

A few weeks ago I kept getting messages that looked like it was from McAfee claiming that I needed to run a scan on my computer.  I clicked on the box to close, but it kept coming up periodically.  So then one time I just hit 'run the scan' button and after two seconds an error message came up.  So I closed the whole thing.
I figured I must have caught some virus so I went to control panel on my Acer and I did a "recovery" which usually clears everything off my computer.  It take about ten minutes or so.  This time after a few minutes, it showed that it was 88% finished when my computer just shut down.  After a couple of seconds it then started back up.
Since that time, every time I start my lap top it will turn on and stay on for about 3 or 4 minutes, then it will turn off and restart.
Can anyone give me an idea as to what I should do?

Hi,
I have an Acer Travelmate 4200 that got a drink spilled on it last night. It spilled all over the keyboard, so we took apart the top section of the keyboard to clean it out and dried it upside down last night to get any remaining liquid out.

Now the computer will not load. The green power light comes on and it acts like it is trying to read the DVD drive but then it does nothing. The fan comes on as well. But no screen or anything else.

Please help, this computer has the research for a thesis and it is very crucial to school.

Thanks.

A:Acer Laptop wont start operating system now!!!!

Aparently you have tried to make the laptop as dry as possible, but things can still be fried inside it. I am afraid the latter is the case and that you will have to opt for a waranty claim, although water damage usually isn't covered in that.

To recover the data I suggest to remove the harddisk and put it in or connect it to another laptop... but bottomline is that I think your laptop is lost :-(

Ok, so earlier today i decided that i needed to restore my laptop to factory default. As you can see from the title, i use an acer laptop which means i used the acer Erecovery software. All went well at first, although it took a stangely long time at a screen which said "setup is starting." The problem now is, I am now stuck on the acer 'software installation screen!' It is stuck at 41/48 where it is trying to install clear.fi v1.0. I think i heard the sound of an error earlier which worries me as i dont want to force restart my laptop as it clearly says not to do that and doing this caused my hard-drive to break last time!
I have been on this screen for about 2 hours now, and will leave it overnight if i have to. I just need to know what to do if it does not fix!

A:Laptop stuck on acer software installation after system restore

Have you categorically rejected the idea of doing a clean install, as opposed to a recovery to factory specs via the Acer software?

Acer software and support being what it is, I'm not surprised by your predicament and don't have a solution to that other than to wait as long as you can stand to see if it sobers up.

The internet on my Acer laptop is so slow after a system restore, it takes 25 minutes to download a 17 MB file on a 5 mbps internet connection.

The reason why I had to restore my laptop, is due to me deleting some registry keys.
Why I delete the keys in the first place (made everything open in notepad), is due to me trying to delete zone alarm toolbar (nightmare)
I also download some other programs which include lastpass, truecrypt, file shredder, novastor backup, threatfire, zone alarm firewall, bufferzone.

other important notes.

if you need me to run any tests on computer just ask me and I will run the test.

I have already used cclener, smart pc care, slimcleaner.

If you've lost the password, contact the administrators of the program under which you received the system for assistance.
If you know you have not set a password -- but one just appeared suddenly -- you 'll need to replace the system board.

Hi!
I bought an Acer Notebook Aspire 5546 for a couple of weeks ago and yesterday got this message when I tried to start up my computer:
"Error loading operative system..."

I tried with Alt+F10 and the computer seemed to be starting, the Windows files loading and after a while a message came up "Please wait a moment...". I waited for several hours nothing happened..

Please, help what should I do? I have not a restore disc or Vista cd... stupid enough...

And I reported to Acer but still didn't get any answers yet. The computer is still in warranty.

A:error loading operative system on Acer

Hi ilevoi and welcome to Vista Forums

Since this is a relatively new laptop (only a couple of weeks old), it shouldn't really have this sort of problem. Check the manual to see if you can restore your laptop from the built-in recovery partition (you will need to press a sepcific key during POST). If you have success with this, then, before you install any other programs, create a system restore disk using the in-built utility (again refer to the manual for instructions on how to do this). If, despite trying that, your laptop still fails to operate properly then return it to where you bought it.

I was hoping that someone may be able to provide some advice re a small problem I have. Since my laptop died and I've rebuilt it. The time is not correct on it. When I power on the laptop the time is wrong and I then reset it to the correct time. If I leave it on for a few hours it seems to lose time if this makes sense. I believe the CMOS battery controls the time when the laptop is switched off and this could be the problem, but I thought that once the system was fired up the time was controlled by the operating system. Is this correct?

Also if it's the CMOS battery that needs replacing is there anyway of knowing this is the issue before dismantling. Problem is that the location of this battery requires full dismantling and reassembly. Typical manufactures they put the CMOS battery in the most inaccessible place on my laptop.

Would anything other than the CMOS battery be responsible for this isue, could it be a virus or anything along these lines..

Any advice appreciated...

A:System running win7 losing time on my Acer 8930G laptop

No; actually that is where you are wrong. The CMOS battery keeps the date and time in tact at all times no matter whether the computer is on or off. The operating system just allows it to use the internet to check and set the time correctly. There probably is no virus; just the battery needs replacing. Which should be pretty simple. I believe you have to take off the top case to get to the system board and locate the cmos battery.

Thanks in advance to the BleepingComputer users for helping me and others with this malware/virus problem: On December 14, 2011, the System Fix Virus & Privacy Protection Virus hijacked and infected my system: WinXP (64-bit). They've caused my default web browser to change frequently (each time I reboot my PC). So I've been having trouble getting rid of all of this malware/viruses from my system, since I use Windows XP x64. The latest version(s) of ComboFix and TDSSKiller don't work on the 64-bit version of Windows XP, but they are compatible with other versions of Windows: 98, XP, VISTA, 2000, 2003, 2008 and Windows 7! The following programs were made for other operating systems, so I need a solution to these 3 problems (listed below)e: ComboFix.exe and TDSSKiller.exe are not compatible with my Windows XP 64-bit system. Hi,

I'm not sure if this counts as a hardware or software problem, sorry if I've posted it in the wrong forum.

My parents have an acer laptop, it is about 3 years old, it has a centrino 1.6, 256mb ram, 40GB HD, CDRW and windows XP.

Up until yesterday it was working perfectly, and when last used it shut down normally. However on trying to boot it up today it gets to a screen that says “load error! Press any key to reboot…”, however when pressing a key it just displays the load error message again and seems stuck in a loop.
This happens only a couple of seconds into the boot sequence, the screen immediately before the error screen gives the following information:

Base Memory xxxxx
Extended memory xxxxx
Total memory xxxxxx

Auto detecting IDE device
Primary master xxxxxx
Secondary master

Insyde ACPI bios initialised

At the bottom of the screen it says “ Press F2 to enter system configuration”

If I press F2 at that point I get into the BIOS.

I did not know what to do, I wondered whether Windows had been corrupted so decided to wipe the hard drive and reinstall windows using the recovery CD’s supplied with Acer.
After going into the BIOS to change to boot device to the CD drive, the clean reinstall seemed to go well, everything progressed, as normal and every thing seemed to being reinstalled. I was optimistic that all would be well.

However, on rebooting after the reinstall I got the same error message as I had done before. (I had changed the boot de... Read more

Hi mmacc

It's a bit hard to state positively what your problem might be, but it looks like it is hardware, probably the Hard Drive. Your options are limited. My recommendation would be to take it to a repair centre. Is it stll under warranty?

First, my laptop is a Aspire 5250-BZ853. I received it back in October, I think...may've been earlier. But anyhow, it was working just fine yesterday until I did a Windows Update. I had to restart, and it was fine again. But then it began running sluggishly slow, and just terrible overall so I restarted it once more and that was when the problems began.

This entire day, this has been driving me nuts. I have important files on here, and I backed up most on my external harddrive a bit ago but there were a few I missed and hadn't the chance to get (ironically enough the most important, papers and such.) At first, it said my password was wrong -- as if someone had changed it! I restarted it once more, thinking it an error or something, and did that again so I restarted it again. Finally, it worked but I think it logged me in as safe mode somehow. After that, it restarted on its own and began this loop. I did a LOT of searching on Google until finally someone suggested to someone else to try pressing "ALT + F10" I think it was as it was starting, and finally I made progress. Before that, it was just going into a constant rebooting loop and I couldn't even log into safe mode. Trying to reset it back to a time it was working was futile, because it said there was no recovery time there! So that shot that idea down. At last, I got somewhere.

But then that was shot as well. I clicked the reset to factory settings, but still keep all the files (and they would be saved to... Read more

Got a new Acer 5620 laptop running Vista - removed Norton AV, added TrendMicro AV then loaded MS Office 07 - Outlook 07 will not run (other programs are fine) - gives 2 errors - one is MSVCR80.dll is not found; it also said at one point that RTFHTML.DLL was not found and keeps saying I should re-install Outlook. I haved tried the following steps: Re-Installing Office suite, repairing office, starting from scratch and restoring system to factory settings (full format) - none of these solved the issue. I did a lot of research on-line and many things point to this maybe being a conflict with Acer add-ins? So, I also tried going into the registry editor and changing the LoadBehavior for the suspect add-ins to zero, but that did not work either. NO clue where to go from here....please help!! Thanks!!

First, use the uninstall tool from the Symantec site, not the uninstall that is on your machine - it cleans things more completely.

The problem started right after my friend and I were running an Ad-hoc network between out two laptops, so I'm fairly certain the problem has something to do with the wireless adapter. Right after I turn the thing on it lists 5-6 errors. It reads:

After I dismiss the errors, the computer begins to load up in the vista load screen only to crash a few seconds in. This happens in Safemode and when I start normally.

I've been trying to fiddle with the BIOS to figure out if I could fix this but I've had absolutely no luck. None of the other start up options seem to do anything, either.

I'm abroad right now and I'm without my Vista CD so I can't use that either.

Help would be more than appreciated,

Cheers,

Martin
