USB drive not detected on one PC, but is detected on other PCs

Q: USB drive not detected on one PC, but is detected on other PCs

My Kingston Data
Traveller 8 GB drive (1 yr old) is not getting detected on my new PC (2 weeks old). It was working perfectly on my old pc, and is working fine on my office PC, frnd's PC, Philips DVD player, Sony HiFi audio system.

My mobo is Biostar TA785GE 128M, OS is win xP Pro 32 bit. The drive is detected on all USB ports of mobo, but as soon as I start any data transfer, it crashes and i get error that data cannnot be transfered.

The Disk Management (My Computer - Manage) shows the drive as healthy, but after I start any file transfer, in a few seconds, it reads "Unreadable". Sometimes, the drive letter also goes missing. In brief, the drive is displayed in My Computer till any file transfer is initiated. As soon as any file trnsfr starts, I get error that file transfer is not complete and the drive goes missing.

My frnd's UsB drive (2 GB), and my old 256 mb drive, both work and files are transferred which removes the doubt that there is some prob in USB ports. As the 8gb pen drive works on other PCs and devices, so i guess the drive is okay. I ran HDtune for it, and it has no bad sectors. That leaves my OS as the culprit (I assume). Looks like there is some problem in the way XP maps the USB drive.

I've tried many things, and here is my observation:

* Changed drive letter to other letters, but to no avail. Changed drive letter to a working USB drive letter, but failure again.
* Formatted many times, but data transfer gives error
* My frnd's pen drive shows as file system as FAT, but mine shows FAT32. Wt's the diference?
* After formatting, the volume label is showing as "NEW VOLUME". Earlier it used to be "Kingston".
* Updated chipset and USB drives from biostar site, but error persists
* chkdisk /r gives "no problems are found", but also shows "cannot write boot sector" error.

Can anyone help me?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I should have came to this conclusion sooner, but my current re-installation of Windows has some problems that I haven't had the time to address until now. What I need, though, is access to the repair function on the disk. However, herein lies my problem...

When I boot up, media in the drive or no media, bios does not show the drive in its list. I can still open and close the drive as if nothing is wrong there, but I cannot "boot from CD". I've reset my bios back to defaults and while the drive appeared on IDE Channel 1 in the settings, it still would not recognize ANY media while booting up.

I have the latest version of my bios. I have also tried changing cables. The drive is on an IDE channel by itself.

Once my system boots into Windows, however, the drive is recognized and acts normally as if nothing happened in bios. Media operates fine. I have checked the event viewer, and there are no entries anywhere that states my optical drive has been experiencing problems, and yes, in fact it operates just like it always does.

Can anyone help me get my bios and cdrom back together again? The problem is I just do not know where to start to solve this. I wish I could say how long this has been happening, but I really don't know as of today. There have been no hardware changes in the past three months, and my current installation and configuration began back in late April.

Thanks for your time...

A:CD/DVDROM drive - not detected by bios, detected by Windows?

What is the boot sequence in the bios? should be CD or optical drive first, then Hard Drive or IDE-0 second if you want to boot from the cd-drive. Many computer manufacturers set the computer to automatically boot off of the hard drive by default so setting the factory defaults might not be what you are looking for. Look for the screen that has the boot order or sequence and just change it, exit and save settings and restart the computer with the boot cd in the drive. I hope that helps.

It sounds like something is timing out.  It is hard to be sure without swapping either the drive or the MB.  You might go into the BIOS and select diagnostic mode for boot.  That would do a memory test and it might slow things down enough to mask the problem

Today Norton Antivirus began to block threats from Trojan.Zeroaccess.B, Trojan.Gen, Trojan.Gen.2, and Trojan.Zeroaccess.C. I have been prompted to do a manual removal of Trojan.Zeroaccess!inf4 from c:\windows\system32\services.exe. Additionally, Bitcoinminer is being repeatedly detected, blocked and quarantined. I'm not sure if Norton is having a problem deleting/quarantining Bitcoinminer, or if it is actually being downloaded over and over. I suspect that these two problems are related, as they started at the same time.

From what I gather, the fix seems to be quite complicated and I would appreciate some help.

My system is running 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium w/ SP 1. Looking at similar threads, it looks like I'll need to use a flash drive to run removal tools. I do not currently have a flash drive on hand, but I do have an 4 GB SD card. Will that be a sufficient replacement?

Keyboard not detected, Mouse not detected. Fatal Error, System Halted.

That's what the system said, in DOS, on the black screen. Of course, I had my mouse and keyboard unplugged at the time, because I had just unplugged everything to move the computer.

Anyways, I plugged the keyboard and mouse in, restarted the computer, and everything started normally.

My question is, what is with this error? Vista can't boot up if I don't have a keyboard and mouse plugged in? It's not a big deal, but it seems like very odd behavior.

A:Keyboard not detected, Mouse not detected. Fatal Error, System Halted.

This has nothing to do with Vista whatsoever. As you said it showed up on the black screen with white text, which is the boot screen. The computer hasnt even started loading windows yet. The fatal eror occurs because you have no input device. The computer recognises this, and given that they are important, it puts a warning up that there is no connection.
It is completely normal, really, and whatever OS you have, its going to do the same thing.

I did a stupid thing yesterday. I downloaded an icon pack APK file on my computer to upload to my mobile. Anyway, the thing is, when I double clicked on it, BlueStacks (Android Emulator) opened up, and Avast started giving me lots of warnings about BlueStacks accessing Trojan URLs (it blocked them of course).
Now, the thing is: I scanned the APK file both in Malware Bytes Anti Malware and Avast (and even Malware Bytes Anti Rootkit), and it showed no virus or malware found. But when I try to attach the the same APK file as a Gmail attachment (which I read on the net detects viruses, which is why I tried it), Gmail gives me a "Virus found" error.
So, my question is how come such reliable antivirus / anti-malware programs like MBAM and Avast didn't detect the virus but Gmail did? And more importantly, (though I have deleted the APK file in question from my computer) is my computer safe? Or has a rootkit / trojan been installed?

A:Virus not detected in Avast & MBAM, but detected when I upload the file to Gmail

I hope you're having a good December. Thanks again for your previous help this past summer!

A scan by TrendMicro picked up several infections, most of which it was able to clean up. But it wasn't able to remove PAR_SE.50425 and PAR_SE.50426. It also says I have a (MS05-004) ASP.NET Path Validation Vulnerability (887219), even though I have automatic Microsoft security updates. The first several minutes of a PandaScan (I didn't have time to finish it) found some SearchMeUp adware.

I'm so sorry, I can't remember how to Hijack This, otherwise I'd post that log, too. Any help you could provide would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Hi guys,

I bought a bluetooth dongle off of amazon so I could use my bluetooth headset with my comp. Once plugged in it installs driver version 6.1.7601.17889 from microsoft and there are no yellow '?'s. When I look for devices it sees my headset no probs but will not connect, which it does instantly with phones / tablets etc.

A very detailed search has brought me to the conclusion that it's a problem with the bluetooth driver, not the headset. Unfortunately there are no identifiers on the dongle itself but device manager seems to think it's:

Device type: Bluetooth Radios
Manufacturer: Cambridge Silicon Radio Ltd

Is there anyway I can detect exactly the chipset in the dongle and get the correct drivers installed? Or am I barking up the wrong tree completely?

I went to connect today and my dialup connection was gone.  I thought, well, I'll recreate it....but Windows would not let me and said (in the Connect to a Network box):  "Windows could not detect a dialup modem", "Is the modem connected?", "is the modem switched on?"
It is an internal modem.
I went to Device Manager, and there it is as usual, "This device is working properly".

A:Dialup modem detected, but not detected, huh?

Doing some searching gave me this solution:
It is caused by certain services being shut off for unknown reasons.... definitely unknown in my case (??).
Delete or rename the following folder:
(the folder, rtbackup)
However, it has some kind of protection and doesn't allow itself to be so changed.  I did it from a DOS boot disk with NTFS4DOS.
Everything is working.

I've been working on this off and on for a week or 2 - searching the net hi and lo, including this site, and can't come up w/anything, so I'm resorting to posting here...

Hello, I recently bought a Probook 450 G4, i7 7500U with 1 TO HDD and 8GB RAM. I wanted to upgrade it with an SSD so I bought a ADATA Premier SP550 2280 M.2 SSD. The BIOS detected it normally, but windows installer wouldn't find it. I removed the HDD and tried again, same issue. I then installed windows 10 on the HDD to try and format the SSD in windows and surprise! no sign of the SSD nowhere, not in browser nor in Disk Managment or Diskpart. Apparently HP disabled the M.2 port in BIOS as mentioned here ( https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/M-2-SSD-Upgrade/m-p/5580822#M3... ) I updated the BIOS the the latest version provided by HP for my laptop model and the same issue is still ongoing, this is a 120$ SSD that I can't use nor return as the problem is the HP product not ADATA's SSD! The simplest solution is in the hands of HP, just release a BIOS update with the M.2 port ENABLED ! why brag about having a M.2 port in your products and then DISABLE it ?! Any insights please ? Many Thanks. PS: I started a new thread yesterday and it is no longer available now ! did HP remove it or what ? it was there for a while and I'm sure! what a shame !

I picked up a computer off craiglist was thoroughly enjoying my gtx geforce 680 ( https://boston.craigslist.org/sob/sys/6239989909.html ) when it "crashed" about 6 hours after purchase. When I rebooted I received the "no hard disk detected" message. Upon launching bios setup the hard drive is listed with details as being attached to its corresponding sata port. I am trying to determine if my hard drive is broken or if it needs remounting or some other sort of procedure.

The hard drive is a slightly dated WD Carver 1 TB SATA internal drive interacting with an asus motherboard. I did notice the boot order for drives had been rearranged putting an external and an optical disk drive in position 1 and 2 for boot directories. I disabled both the external and optical disc and selected the WD sata drive as the first preference for booting. Still I am getting the same error. I read somewhere that if the bios is recognized in setup but is still not recognized for booting that I may need to run a 32bit diagnostic. The forum I saw the diagnostic post mentioned on was in reference to a dell machine. I don't really know what this is or if it exists on my ASUS mother board.

In short: how can I tell If my hard drive needs replacement?

If Bios recognizing the drive is sign of life how can I get my computer to recognize this drive again?

are there any programs I could download on my laptop and put on my external that could be used to boot and run diagnostics on t... Read more

What type of disk drive is it? what brand and model? Search for the brand and model on the official manufacturer site. Sounds to me like you do not have the driver installed.
When did the issue start to occur? Could you use your disk drive before? Did it suddenly stop working?
What happens when you try to enable it? Have you tried telling windows to search for a driver from windows update?

I upgraded my optical drive a while back with a Sony NEC Optiarc CD/DVD-RW. It worked fine, and recently I put in a secondary hard drive, Seagate, 80gb IDE ATA. That also worked properly, but I decided to move it another computer & make it the primary hard drive. After I removed it & booted up my system it said 'secondary drive not detected', so I went into the Bios & put the secondary drive on off. When it booted up I noticed that the Doptiarc) drive was not there. After I finished working with the other comp I decided I didn't need it there & put the secondary drive back in the main comp and it worked properly, but the optiarc still is not detected. I looked in the Bios, in the boot sequence, & next to IDE cd drive it says, 'not installed'. The jumper settings I had when it was working was main drive on master, secondary drive on slave, & optiarc on cable. I put the both the secondary & optiarc on slave to see if it would detect it, but I got the same results. I also went to manage under my comp, and the optiarc disk is not there. How come it's not recognized now?

Other spec on my comp are:
Dell 8250
Pentium 4 3.06ghz HT 478 pin
Phoenix Bios
512mb(2*256) RDRAM PC1066
Main hard drive: western digital 60 gb IDE ATA
Secondary hard drive: seagate 80gb IDE ATA 7200rpm
Optiarc is also on IDE cable.
OS: XP home sp2

Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

My CD Drive has been acting up for a month or so now.
Most of the time the CD Drive is not detected, on the rare occasion that it is, after the computer has been on for awhile it will "lose" it and will no longer appear under my computer.
Its a Lite-on iHas524

The event viewer reports
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:

It no longer appears in the Device Manager.

Also at the windows loading screen while booting it will sometimes hang for a minute or two which from what I understand is usually driver related.

I have checked the cables and everything is connected fine.

Is it possible to reinstall CDrom drivers?
If so, how would I go about doing that and where can I find them? There doesn't appear to be model specific drivers.

A:CD Drive not being detected.

Try opening Device Manager and clicking the Scan for Hardware changes. Hopefully you can follow my diagram. If that doesn't work check your cables, power and data to the drive for looseness, broken wires etc. If you have another connector on your motherboard, try swapping it to another one.

Drivers are generic ones Windows has already installed. There may be a firmware upgrade available, there was for my iHAS424 when I bought it.

EDIT: I checked http://www.liteonit.com/global/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=298&Itemid=67# and there seems to be no firmware upgrade.

I am working with a brand new Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz machine and am having trouble detecting my non-os hard drive which is IDE. My Primary os hard drive is SATA

When just my 320 GB SATA hard drive is plugged in, I have no problems. MY DVD drive can be seen at this time. But as soon as I try to plug in a IDE hard drive into my computer using the same IDE ribbon as my DVD drive, both the Hard drive and the DVD player dont show up. I have tried the Master, Slave, Single and Cable Select jumper settings on my hard drive. I forget which ones they are, but on a couple of those jumper settings, my computer won't even boot.

If it is necessary, I can try to recreate the error message caused when not able to boot.

Is there a special jumper setting that I am not aware of? Can anyone suggest a solution for making my hard drive detected.

I don't see how MENTIONING an illegal activity can make it WRONG
I am NOT Asking for help on an illegal activity - I ONLY said that I USED an illegal version
The REAL Purpose to this thread is to try to make my victimized USBs working again.

# Rufus was used on Windows 8.1

# Sandisk Cruzer Orbit has been through Rufus and has been completed, Now there is NO trace of USB activity

# Sandisk Cruzer blade has been through Rufus, but the task was cancelled. Now the USB cannot be detected in My Computer, But in Device Manager it does, But it cannot be accessed.

# Since Rufus has done a task, My Computer has not been able to detect any USB drives since. To access USB drives that has not gone through Rufus, has to be accessed manually.

# Both victimized USBs has been tested for any activity on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on an Acer Aspire 5315. Note that the laptop is a hand-me-down. It had a BSoD and the owner said I can keep it if I could Fix it. I fixed the BSoD by replacing the original OS (Windows Vista) with Ubuntu.

# Both USBs can be detected on the Boot Manager (maybe there is a dedicated OS to fixing drives?)

# Rufus Link - [link removed]

# In Device Manager, it says this for the 2 usbs - "A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)"

My Aim: Make the victimized USBs work again!

Everything was fine until i shut down the computer. When I started it back up, the problem came back. No CD-ROM drive in My Computer and "!" on standard Bus Mastering IDE Hard Disk Controller.
Any suggestions?

Yesterday I noticed the light on my CD drive was red (there are 3 other users on this PC). I pushed to button to eject a cd, and the drive did not respond. I don't know if there is a cd in there or not.

I rebooted, and the cd drive did not respond at all now. No lights, and it is not listed under "My Computer"....

I checked Device Manager, and I don't see it there either. Any help on how I can get started untangling this would be much appreciated.

Hello, I recently purchased a USB 2.0 PCI Card, I installed it without any problems, It was detected by Windows XP and all the drivers were installed, But after Installing the Card, I noticed that My CD ROM drive is no longer visible when I click on the My Computer icon, When I go to System Properties -> Device Manager-> right click on my CD ROM - properties - It shows:

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

When I plug my iPod into the 2.0 USB card, It shows up as Drive (D) in My Computer, previously the CD ROM use to show as drive (D), also when I plug my external CDRW drive it also is not found.

I don't know whats going on.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

It's been a week since i used my dvd/cd drive so i never noticed this until last night. My E drive isn't coming up i 'My Computer'. I went to see if it shows up in Device manager but the entire DVD/CD-Rom Drive section is gone so i can't uninstall and reinstall. I can hear the drive itself run whenever i place a cd inside so it's spinning it's just the drive is non existent on my computer.I ran regestriy editor to delete lower and upper filter files but upon reboot it didn't do anything, just in case i ran it in safe mode to see if that made any difference. So far i can't find a solution that works. I'm hoping i dont have to replace my drive entirely because it's somehow defective now. Anyone have some possible solutions?

I have had the same problem as well.  I was able to correct it.  Here are some options:Put a couple of different DVD's into the drive.I know you said it doesn't show up in the Device Manager.  Go back to the Device Manger and right-click on IDE adapters and select Scan for changes.Let me know if either of these work.

My CD ROM drive recently has gone invisible. I heard it could be from a windows vista update, but I used the windows fix for that, and even manually attempted to disarm that. However, my computer still cannot detect the CD ROM. I checked the windows manager and it simply is not even on the list of my drives. Please.. I do not have the money to buy a new computer, and I really need my computer to retain its ability to read CD's.
Thank you

You need to first determine whether this is a hardware issue or a software issue.

Connect the CD-ROM drive to another computer. If it works there, it's a software issue. If not, you will need a new CD/DVD drive.

That is what I would consider the first step in solving your problem.

A:CD/DVD Drive Not Detected

Go to search and type device manager. In device manager, make sure there are no yellow markers, indicating driver problems. Go specifically to dvd/cd drives and other drives and make sure they are up to date.

I just built a new system with mostly new parts, but a few older ones. I put the DVD-Rom drive from my old computer into this one. The problem is it isn't being detected. And when it is plugged in, my CDRW drive shows up in the BIOS but not once the computer is booted. Might this be a compatibility issue?

Hi Ajju and welcome to TSF !

If you're using the front USB ports try the rear ones. Also unplug all the other USB devices and see if it helps.

Have you installed all the latest critical updates from Windows XP ? You'll need service pack 2 for USB 2.0 devices to work properly.

What's your motherboard brand and model ? You can use everest from the "posting system specs" link in my sig to find out (it'll be next to "motherboard name" in the hardware summary).

Go to start => run and type devmgmt.msc. In the devicen manager expand universal serial bus controller. Do you see the word "enhanced" somewhere ?

I've had this problem intermittently for a couple months. It's seemed to go away on its own in the past, and I just chalked it up to Windows being strange, but it's getting a little ridiculous after three times, and I'm hoping I can find an actual solution.

Without any provocation on my part, my DVD/CD-RW drive doesn't appear in explorer *or* the device manager; nor can I find any continuity between the few times this has happened. I'll have used the drive a few days ago, and then realize the computer doesn't think it exists when I want to use it again. In addition, the drive itself won't open. I don't have a paper clip to my name at the moment, so I can't try the force eject. The green power light does come on during start up, though, and if I time it just right, the drive will pop open like normal.

I've looked through a few pages of archives and tried a registry related solutions that worked for other people with similar problems, but alas, my drive is still MIA.

It's a Dell Inspiron E1505, and I don't know the exact model of the DVD/CD-RW drive, but I'm 99% positive it's whatever the standard was to come with the Inspiron. Any thoughts/ideas? I'm stumped on this one.
