Q: L450 - Windows 10 - Adaptive brightness problem - ...

Hello! I have a Lenovo L450 laptop with Windows 10 (upgraded from Windows 7 a few months back). Since upgrading to Windows 10, I keep on having the same problem with the display brightness. Every time the display shows a dark image, video (or similar), the display dims a lot and I am not able to increase it with the function keys. For example: when watching a rather dark YouTube video in full sceen, the display dims A LOT and I can not increase the brightnes with the function keys. As soon as I exit full screen, the display VERY SLOWLY returns to normal brightness and now the function keys work again. After exiting full screen the display is still so dim that, when you press the DECREASE BRIGHTNESS funcion key, it INCREASES its brightnss. See photo attached. PLEASE HELP ME AS THIS THING IS DRIVING ME INSANE! Thanks a lot! Marko

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Alright so you've just upgraded to Windows 10 and suddenly every time you visit a new page your brightness starts going crazy randomly dimming and brightening. This is a pretty annoying feature. So you search and search for a solution but all you find is people telling you to change your settings in your advanced display to say off and it still doesn't work. This same thing has happened to me every time I've updated my laptop and I am now taking initiative to forever engrave the solution onto the face of the internet because I am so fed up with it.
Here is what you do:
1) Go to Settings and choose Display.
2) Scroll down and choose Advanced Display Settings.
3) Scroll to bottom and choose Display Adapter Properties.
4) Click on AMD Catalyst Control Center and proceed to open it.
5) Once opened click on PowerPlay beside the battery.
6) Towards bottom left of screen you should see a little checked box that says Enable VariBright.
7) Uncheck this stupid little box and don't forget to Apply.
8) Enjoy having the power to make things brighter/dimmer.

Hi all, I just bought a P71. I have been quite satisfied until I noticed a real killer. When the screen gets somewhat bright, e.g. by opening an browser window, the system makes the screen go brighter. When I switch to some dark screen, e.g. my IDE for programming, Windows 10 starts to dim the whole screen. So in effect, dark screens get darker and I have problems reading stuff on the screen, while when the background gets white/light grey my eyes really start to hurt (especially in the dark) because of the screen turning brighter. This option is called "Adaptive Brightness" in Windows 10 and appears to be dumbo's most clever idea. --> Where's the point in making dark screens darker and bright screens brighter??? It's sooo stupid... Anyway, I tried to disable the adaptive brightness in the extended energy options somewhere in the system properties, but it didn't work. A reboot didn't help. I disabled the webcam in the device manager, but this didn't help either. I have no idea how that adaptive brightness craze works, but my suspicion is that some process reads the graphics memory every seconds and decides to darken, brighten or leave the screen as is. I checked the services, but there was nothing running that I could find. Not some sensor service, nothing. I want to turn off this adaptive brightness b*lls**t. I have an NVidia graphics card, the inbuilt Intel chipset isn't used (AFAIK). @Lenovo: How do you turn th... HP Notebook - TOUCH, ENERGY STARModel #: 15-ac113clWindows 10, 64-bit As of the last couple of days, my laptop's brightness has seemingly been changing by itself. It's been increasing so much that it almost looks like it's in grayscale. The brightness fluctuates every 3-4 seconds or so, becoming extremely bright, and then slowly returning to normal. This happens both while the laptop is plugged in, and when it is not.  I have Googled this using every phrasing I could possibly think of, and have yet to find anyone else with my same problem. I have seen some forum posts about fluctuating brightness, but the responses all said to either disable Adaptive Brightness, or to disable Power Saving Technology in the Intel HD Graphics control panel. In my case, both of these settings were already disabled. I have downloaded both a new screen saver and a new Chrome extension in the last few days, and I removed them both, thinking that one of them HAD to be the cause of this problem - no such luck.  Some comments I've seen have suggested that it might be the battery. For context, I sent my laptop in for repair about 2 months ago and they replaced the battery, repaired the charging port, and sent a new charger cord. I've had no issues with any of the replacement parts. Also, I've done 2 battery tests in the last ~48 hours; the first said everything was fine, and the second said that the battery was functioning properly but needs to be calibrated, whi... Read more

Looks like you have done couple of troubleshooting so from my point of view:1. You might have a screen protector, plastic covering or comething in front of Proximity Sensor (Located normally beside webcam) which is causing issue.2. Dirt on the Proximity Sensor. If the above two are clear then I would run a system diagnostic and System Recovery at the last.http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467259Finally:http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04758961

This is driving me nuts because it dims at any time that the view gets dark, be it video games, movies or even backgrounds.

I've scoured the web for every possible method for turning off adaptive brightness. I switch between VLC (fullscreen) and word often, and apparently every time a "movie" is playing, the Intel video card automatically dims the screen. When I switch back it increases the brightness. This is maddening. I had previously been able to make the change in the Intel Graphics interface to stop adaptive brightness. However, since my last Windows update, I can no longer access the Intel Graphics interface. It has a loading screen and then never opens. I ended up even going into the registry and changing the setting there, but it hasn't change the effect (even the registry displays my change from 30 and -30 to 0.00.

Please help! Do I need to roll back my Windows version (and how?). or fix the intel interface? How can I stop this from happening>!>!>!>

So, I picked up an Acer Aspire VN7-592G this Christmas to replace my old laptop, but I seem to be having some problems with the screen adjusting its brightness constantly with what is being displayed on screen, which I myself find a bit irritating. I've disabled the power saving settings that affect brightness in both the Intel HD Graphics control panel as well as the Windows control panel, but it has made no difference. According to Acer's website, there's supposed to be a setting in the Acer Quick Access app to disable Adaptive Brightness, but there isn't one in mine. It should be noted that my Quick Access is up to date so that doesn't seem to be the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm on Windows 10 Pro x64 and the auto/adaptive brightness is driving me up the wall. I've been through the Control Panel and even searched for the settings for Adaptive Brightness, but it doesn't seem to be available. I've checked the Intel Graphics Control Panel and there are no settings I can find there to adjust/disable it, and the Lenovo Vantage app has nothing in it either. It's getting extremely annoying because my code IDE's use dark themes across the board and the display keeps dimming out when I switch to them and it gets super bright when I switch to a white webpage that has documentation on it. Intel UHD630/Nvidia 1050Ti (419.67 DCH) with a 4K panel, the latest build of Windows10 x64 with all updates applied and the latest drivers. I understand the display is driven by the iGPU.

Hi SOCEIR,
Is that a driver update you are downloading? That will not change any settings for your GPU.
Follow the steps below to turn off adaptive brightness:
1) Go to your power settings by left-clicking the battery symbol at the bottom right of your desktop
2) click power and sleep settings
3) click additional power settings then click "change plan settings" next to the power profile you are using
4) then, click "change advanced power settings"
5) Scroll down to Display (click the plus icon) --> Enable adaptive brightness --> then turn it off using the pull down menus.

Let me know if this works,
Cheers,

It happens maybe once every fifteen minutes. I have adaptive brightness disabled on my power plan, night light turned off, and the dynamic brightness setting in thet lenovo companion/settings app disabled as well. Actually I'm not sure if its an auto-brightness issue or a dynamic contrast issue. When I plug in an external monitor, the monitor does the same thing, randomly dimming or brightening at intervals. It's weird.

It's completely fine to uninstall Acer Power Management, I personally consider it bloatware. As per: When I open Intel(R) HD graphics pannel go to power and then disable the 'power saving technology and click apply then ok' this works for awhile however when ever i remove the power supply and re connect it re enables it does not stay unticked. That would be the power settings changing as the power state changes (plugged in or not). I usually fix this by creating a custom power plan and defaulting to that. If you have a hard time let me know and I'll see if I can come up with anything.

I am unable to disable the adaptive brightness on the i5 HD 5500 1080p version of the new XPS 13.
When I view a dark page, the screen will dim, and when I view a bright page, the screen will get brighter. This is extremely annoying and all the options I've tried have not fixed this issue at all.

Turning off the enable adaptive brightness option in the advanced power settings does nothing. I have this done on all power plans.
The option for disabling it that should be in the Intel Graphics Driver does not exist.
Disabling the Sensor Monitoring Service doesn't fix it either.
I have the latest version of the Intel Graphics drivers. Uninstalling it doesn't fix it either.
Installing another operating system doesn't fix it either, so I'm assuming this is some sort of hardware problem.
Does anyone have a solution to this annoying issue?

A:New XPS 13 unable to disable adaptive brightness

To be clear, there is no solution to this problem. No amount of software configuration will fix it. Dell engineers have confirmed that this behavior is controlled by the display firmware.
Last I heard, Dell is working on exposing a switch in the BIOS that would disable the adaptive contrast feature, although they would not give an ETA on when that BIOS update would be available. (source)

Dear all,

As stated in subject, the laptop in question is a recent Skylake XPS 13 9350 FHD. This is a wonderful laptop with one major defect ("feature"): content adaptive brightness/contrast.
My main use-case is development under Linux, and it becomes very irritating when switching between dark terminals and bright websites, e.g. when reading documentation.
There are several other websites, forum threads etc., that already exist on this issue, with unsatisfactory answers.
Therefore I would like to ask here how to turn this "feature" off; an answer of "this is not possible" will not be accepted, as I am aware that this is possible in the worst case by updating the firmware (with success stories on the QHD models).

Many thanks!

Sorry, that is the answer you will get. Only the QHD models are fixable with a firmware update (provided from dell's download center). They have confirmed that the adaptive brightness on the FHD screens lacks this solution and from what i recall they are not actively working on trying to find a fix for the FHD as the adaptive brightness is "working as intended" at least.

A:Laptop screen dims even though adaptive brightness is turned off. What can I do?

After you try everything (including changing the power options, and Dell Intelligent Display), try this.
It may be caused by intel's graphic control panel. When you're using battery, and if you have another separate graphic card, most likely you're switching over to intel's graphic card to save power. Open the screen (below), and make sure the power conversion
option is set properly.

Here's the video, so you can see what I'm talking about. Basically, XPS 13 9360 QHD, has this issue when in a dimly light room, the brightness will be automatically set to the max, and won't be changed by either bios settings (you can adjust brightness level there for battery/AC), latest driver settings, or by keyboard keys.

It'd work normally, but then it'd start going bonkers, but then it'd go back to functioning normal.
Or just stay at max brightness.
I tried disabling DBC, installing latest graphics driver from Dell website, or Intel website using this method, installing latest bios, and other recommended drivers, disabling sensor monitoring service in "services.msc", didn't help.

Hi,
This is power feature of Intel or AMD. If you dislike it, disable it by this setting:
For Intel
The exact layout of Intel's options may vary from system to system
Intel system tray icon > Graphics Properties > Power > On Battery > Display Power Saving Technology
For AMD
Open the Catalyst Control Center (search for "CCC" in start, choose CCC - Advanced) > Graphics > Power Play >

Hello,I've just bought an L450 (without fingerprint reader) and directly updated it to Windows 10. The problem appears after entering suspension mode. When I try to wake it, there is no response: The screen stays on black and the status led continues on.I tried to update the BIOS to the last version but it is still the same.Anyone with the same problem or any suggestion?Thanks,Pablo.

HelloAbout six months ago, I had a problem where my processor would throttle to 0.79 GHz to save power (even running on wall-power).. I fixed this by updating the BIOS, and haven't had that problem since.I have, however, gotten a new problem; My processor's clock speed has been fluctuating all over the place. Most of the time, it jumps between 1.69 GHz to 2.09 GHz. This is a bit annoying but I can fix it temporarily by restarting my computer. The base clock is 2.19 GHz, so it shouldn't be lower than that when running on wall-power.Before this problem arose, I was usually turboing up to 2.89GHz when using it under load.  Is there any fix to this major fluctuation in clock speed?Thank you in advance

When the machine appears to be online but the browser doesn't seem to be working it's usually related winsock being corrupted.

To fix the problem copy/paste the following two command "one at a time" into an Elevated Command Prompt then reboot and test to see if the browser works or not.

Code:
netsh winsock reset catalog

Code:

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit

Hello there, I need help please! I can't fix the screen brightness. It appears to be stuck on full brightness which draws my battery life quickly and hurts my eyes during nights. The brightness button in the action center is missing, there is no brightness slide bar in the display setting nor in control panel, and brightness fn buttons in the keyboard are not working as well. When I click on the battery icon, there is a brightness button next to the battery saver button but also not working (not even clickable).I searched online and I tried:- updating/reinstalling/rolling back display drivers- resetting pc (reinstalling windows)- many other little repairs College is starting soon and I really need my battery life and I will be studying on my laptop in late hours so this brightness issue is a big trouble for me

Take a look at your device manager to make sure the correct drivers are installed. If not, head on over to Toshiba's website and download the audio drivers from there.

Hello everyone, I'm having some code issues while doing screen adaptation in IE11, I would like to ask for your help. I am building a website in wordpress, and I need to make some adaptive adjustments for IE 11 browser. I tried various hacks and
I found:

   @media screen and (-ms-high-contrast:active),(-ms-high-contrast:none){

The method shown above is the only method that works for IE11, but with this method, I can?t do other screen adaptations for IE11.
Like this:

   @media screen and (-ms-high-contrast:active),(-ms-high-contrast:none){

   .section1 li:before {

       width: 50px;
       height: 50px;

       position: absolute;
       left: 70px;

Interesting time doing a Windows 10 Upgrade with an old L450-17K notebook - the first time it didn't work, so used the Recovery USB, went back to Windows 7, then upgraded up to Windows 10 again, but again it didnt work, but the Recovery USB had recreated the Recovery Partition, so then restarted by pressing F8 (interesting that the new Recovery Partition looks quite different to the one on the Recovery USB by the way). Then instead of waiting for Windows updates, downloaded Windows 10 directly using the Windows Media Creator, and installed it immediately - this time it works. But then wanted to transfer the OS to a Samsung Evo 840 SSD - prevented by the Magician software which does not recognise Windows 10, so had to use Macrium Reflect, cloning all the partitions as they are. But it came out rather funnily because there is an extra drive which is very small, and the Recovery Partition was cloned over and takes up too much room, so am thinking of using Partition Wizard to shrink the Recovery Partition down to minimum size (would it work anyway having been moved to the SSD?) and merging it with C (where Onedrive is). But that leaves this odd Drive G, which is very small and appears to be empty (it contains an empty folder titled Recovery). This is all idle experimentation, when in fact the Windows 10 is now working pretty well on the SSD, though the Celeron processor peaks at 100% making the machine freeze quite often when asked to do many things - prob not a very good process... Correction - these are the views of This PC and Computer Management before and after - the first is the Disk before migration, with Onedrive on Drive C, and the Recovery Partion on Drive D.

The second is the Disk after migration, the third is This PC after migration (including detail of the MicroSD storage added afterwards). System G, on exploring, contains a folder named 'Recovery', which when opened is empty.

Data D contains the Recovery Partition. Onedrive Data is in C.

I don't know why or what... But, my TV's too dim when using VGA from my laptop to my TV via a VGA cable.

Laptop: HP Pavilion DV5-2135DX running Windows 8.1 64-Bit.

Specs
Drivers

TV: Insignia
Model: NS-24D510NA15
TV product page

I was going to take photos with my tablet, but, for some reason it looked fine on my tablet.. So, I didn't take any photos of my current VGA issue/problem.

I also tried downloading and installing my laptop's video driver which still did me no good.

Oddly enough, I couldn't get the issue/problem to replicate on a Linux distro. Booted into it, and it wasn't dark/dim when I was using that OS normally for web browsing, file browsing/sorting, watching video, etc.

Any ideas on what I can here? Or, a diagnosis/symptom of my VGA issue/problem. Any help, ideas or assistance would be appreciated.
