Preferred Solution: IP problem on individual networked PC's

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've added a networked printer (Brother model attached via USB to an XP home computer) and I can print a test page from the printer properties page with no problem.

But when I try to print from Word or Wordpad or IE, when I click File/Print it sits there for about 2 minutes saying Connecting to Printer in the status bar, then the print dialog finally comes, and after I click Print it waits about another 2 minutes before it prints.

When I installed the printer, it said it was getting a driver from the machine that the printer is attached to, (but I'm not sure how it could since that is an XP machine).

I tried uninstalling/re-installing, did not help.

As a test, I connected the printer directly to my computer, and Vista is able to configure it and print normally without the need for a driver disk or download. But when returned to the original configuration, it still cannot print quickly over the network.

The odd thing is that this computer used to print fine to that printer via the network, but since I restored a Ghost image from 18 months ago and had to re-install the printer, it no longer prints correctly.

Any ideas?

Can someone help us? I had my pc & printer connected to ADSL broadband modem (via telephone line socket), and then a computer tech networked my laptap to my PC & printer using a wireless router,. which was somehow joined to the wireless modem.
We have now moved house, and we can't afford tech person to come so far to replicate the situation. We don't have ADSL in our new region (too remote) but we have wireless (works brilliantly too!!) using a new wireless multi-computer modem.
Hence, the PC and laptop are on wireless, ..but what of the printer in regards to the laptop??? I've asked both computers to share, the laptop says it's sharing/networking with the main, it says it's conected to printer (Canon Mp800), the network connections say all the right things. I've hooked the router in but i think I have it wrongly connected. I have the router joined to wireless modem as an extension, hoping that it will pick up the laptop signals for the printer.

Hope someone can help

I have 2 pc's linked with a cross-over cable. The main pc connects to the internet with adsl modem.
Both PC's run winXP Pro.The internet connection sharing works fine.
Both pc's has a seperate e-mail account.
The main PC works fine with no hassles.
The second pc can receive mail without problems but I cannot send mail from this pc.
I get a message: "server response 551 :Sender adress rejectedomain not found,Port25,Secure SSL:no,server error:551,Error number : 0x800ccc79

I phoned the ISP and they confirmed that the smtp address is correct as well as the username and password.
Is there any other setting that must be changed to make the second pc able to send and receive on its own account?

I have an irritating problem with backing up data at work. We have a Win2kserver and use Areca, an open-source backup program to create backup scripts and schedule them using windows task scheduler.

All data is backed up each day to a removable portable HDD no problem. I have also created a script that executes a backup to the HDD of a client PC running windows XP.

I have created a shared folder on the HDD of the client pc and mapped it as drive B:\ on the server. The client PC is always on, and power settings have been changed to 'always on'. The user stays logged in to the domain, and locks the workstation.

The backup seems to fail. When I check the folder on the client PC in the mornings, there is nothing in there. Any ideas?

It would be great to be able to backup data to that PC as well as the removable portable HDD. I am trying to avoid getting a network storage device if possible.

Hard to say, but I'd try a sample backup in that configuration and watch what happens. What does any backup log or the event log say about the backup process?

One of our office printers is a HP LaserJet4000. Unfortunately, the NIC card went bad on the unit, so we went out and purchased another one and plugged it in. To get it to work on the network, we have to give it a static IP. When we try to use the little control panel on the printer, we aren't able to set it because the menu software keeps resetting when attempt to put the IP address in.

To add insult to injury, any Apple computers on our network see it just fine -- although we haven't set the IP on it. I don't understand that one at all!

Does anyone know if there is some kind of computer-based way to assign the IP to the printer without using the control panel on the printer itself? Can we connect to it via an ethernet cable and then set the IP that way? We've researched the HP web site, but can't find any other way to set it besides the control panel.

Thanks in advance for any and all replies to this request for help!

Ok, So, i have four computers one is XP Pro, two are windows 7 and one is Vista. In my XP machine i have a master drive and I also have a slave drive. I would like to share my slave drive (as i have always done) so i can access it from any computer on my LAN. Now, I can map the drive with the windows 7 machines so i know it works and i know its shared correctly with the correct permissions and double click to access it.

When I map this drive in Vista it does add the drive under "network locations" section under my computer. However, i cannot double click to open it. The only way i can open it is to right click and hit explore/open and it works. I would like to create a desktop shortcut to this. When i double click it does not give me any errors, it just sits there; helplessly.

Now, for just fun and games. I created another folder on this XP machine and shared it, and i was able to map to it AND double click to open it. So... i don't know what the difference is other than one is a folder on the C: and the other is an actual HDD.

I have done quite a bit of research and most said to look for autorun.ini (and inf, .exe) in the root folder of the slave drive. Non there. I have ran malware and viral scans on the slave drive and both primary drives. (xp and vista machine). I have disconnected and reconnected this network drive probably 200 times. I have tried to manually make a shortcut (right click > shortcut > path > etc) and it does the same. I have no othe... Read more

I am running two systems, one Windows XP and on the other computer Windows 2000. The printer on the 2000 broke, so I set it up to use the printer on the XP system.

I got it working, but now on the XP system, the first time I attempt to connect to the internet (AFTER A REBOOT)I get a WORK OFFLINE box that says: No connection to the internet is currently available. To view Internet content that has been saved on your computer, click Work offline. Click try again to attempt to connect. When I click try again it connects and then anytime I click on IE after that it will connect no problem. Until the next reboot and then same thing happens.

On the 2000 system, when I boot it up I now get a sign on to windows screen, I press ok and it finishes rebooting. It wasn't giving me that screen before.

What did I change when I was installing the printer??

Thank you for your help.

On the XP machine, if you go into Control Panel > Internet Options then click on the "Connections" tab, and then click the "Setup" button and re-configure the internet connection settings, does the problem go away?

If not, you can try this registry fix: http://www.anetforums.com/posts.aspx?ThreadIndex=4068

A:interesting problem with old networked computer

When you're logging on to the system, is is trying to log onto a domain? Or do you know if it used to be part of a domain? Because these (lack of internet and internet connection wizard) are Group Policy security settings.

Try removing it from the domain (if it is on one), don't forget it doesn't need to be physically connected because credentials are cached. Removing from a domain is tricky without the domain controller, however someone might know how to do it.

OK here goes. I can only hope this makes sense. I started work for this small company a few weeks ago and they have multiple PC problems. The PC's are sorta networked together. They can all use the same printer and DSL connection, but that is about it. As far as the internet connection goes, there is a great deal of trouble accessing email through outlook express (by the way all are Win XP). The same computer can pretty much always access Outlook, the others are rather chancey. To make things even more confusing no one id really sure which computer they are all networked through. Any ideas????????????

Do you have the latest updates and service packs for IE6 on your laptop as well as your desktop? Run Windows update to be sure.

Please go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/, and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log as a .txt file, and copy and paste its contents into your next post.

Most of what it lists will be harmless, so do not fix anything yet. I don't know how to read it p) but others here do and may find something that could be causing this.

I have networked two computer with printers attached to each.
PC1 is “guy”, with a brother printer attached
PC2 is “Susan” with a HP 1100 attached

In the past I had no difficulty with networking the computers and have access from each computer to each of the printers.

I up graded the computer Susan and I am now having a few problems that I never had before.

After I perform the Network Setup Wizard on each of the computers (in many different methods) I am having the following problems.

First, every now and then I am getting the following message after double clicking on Entire Network then Microsoft Windows Network:

Entire Network
Not enough storage is available to process this command.

If I wait a few moments I will get the MSHOME and am allowed to click on that.
After this I do see both guy and Susan. If I double click on guy I see items pop up.
If I click on Susan I get the following message:

\\Susan is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path is not found.

Of course I can not add the printer from Susan either. Though I have had no problem adding the printer from guy to Susan. And it prints properly.

What am I doing wrong…

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration….

Two days ago, I tried to print on my network printer and the computer showed that the printer was offline. After a few hours of working things out I was able to get the printer back online. Bascially I had to remove the printer from "devices and printers" and somehow it installed itself. I was happy, I was able to print I sat the pritner as default.

Here is the problem.

There are two computers on the network.

Computer A, which only has the network printer and Computer B which has a local printer connected to it. When I set the network printer to default on computer A, it becomes default on Computer B as well. I do not want this. I want Computer A to have the wifi printer default and computer B to have the local printer default.

But everytime I set the default on computer b to the local computer, it removes the default network printer on computer A.

What am I doing wrong? If you need any additional information, please let me know.

Thank you in advanced,

The Problem: I have a one-way problem on a home network where one desktop (A) easily shares files from its C-drive through the router with the other desktop (B), but not vice versa. In other words, it is easy to access and transfer files from desktop A to B, but not from B to A.
Other facts:
1. Desktops A and B have identical and up-to-date operating systems: Windows 7 64-bit Professional
2. The networking settings for A and B appear to be identical, and both show one another’s hard-drives in the “Computer” display, along with other devices on the home network. Care has been taken under Network Location when mapping each desktop’s hard drive by the other that drive names are unique.
3. Both A and B appear on the home network map, along with all other networked devices. All appears normal.
4. I have applied the network troubleshooters regarding connections to other computers, and it cannot see a problem. I have not been able to find any others in the community with the problem.
What could be the cause of this disparity?

Three Computers on a home network.
Desktop in Office (Windows 7) . Wife's Laptop (Windows 7). My laptop ( Vista unfortunately). Norton Security Suite and all three. I have a network setup and a Homegroup established.

Everything was setup and working so that I could share files between all three. My wife was able to open a desktop file make changes and save it back to the desktop computer.

All of that changed. Now we get a message when trying to save the file. "You do not have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission".

I have given the entire "MY Documents" sharing permission to everyone.

I have checked everything. I have looked over all kinds of forums and nothing has worked.

I am to the point of doing a complete reinstall of Windows 7 on my Desktop. I have spent tens of hours on this.

Any ideas?

A:Networked Computers - can't save files on networked Computers

Disable Norton on the Desktop, see if that fixes it. If not try disabling it on the other computers.

Do this only for testing. Re-enable when done. If it fixes the problem then you need to look at Norton to see how to allow access from the other computers.

My adviser was suggesting that i use a program to have each user on each computer have a log on system... other words all the computers would be able to log on to the system using their profile... my guess is that it gonna be very hard to do that..

The reason is that each user is able to see the docs of the other when they use the set profile (this profile is a limited so each user is not allowed to create a user profile except admins)... so i think it's an application software that I'll need tho.

all kinds of techniques, depending upon the volume (number) and or content.

If you have a router, you may be able to block URLs that contain specific keywords
(eg porno term ) which would block man urls with each keyword

if you have just a few sites and want to kill access to all content from them, add www.domain.name to your hosts file (ask and I can provide details)

if you need to bock a specific url from a site and allow all others, you can add it to
your Block list in the browser.

Hello Hupp and welcome to the Vista Forums.

Did you try to add the songs manually. Also check the box "Add Media Files To Library When Played" in the WMP options under the Player tab.

Also click in the Options under the Library tab, the Monitor Folders tab and check My Personal Folders option, then click Advanced Options in the same Add To Library window, which folders the WMP has to monitor and add the content to the library.

Hope it helps. Cheers...

A:Individual Files in Libraries

Libraries are virtual folders not virtual files so to answer your question, no. Instead maybe use a symbolic link (made with mklink with the command line) and link the file in a certain folder. Or just put it in a folder already set to the library.

Hi everyone,
I've been having a crazy problem that just recently started and has been stumping me for a couple of weeks now and I need some outside opinions to see if you can spot what I'm missing.
I have a Lenovo Ideacentre desktop running Windows 7 Home Premium with IE8
The problem is whenever I'm trying to access certain websites. For example Google and Yahoo are preset home tabs. Google opens just fine but Yahoo does not, I get "internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". I jump over to Chrome and both pages work fine. Another site I use, I get the same error but under the more information section it tells me I'm getting a 403 forbidden error. I can access that page too from Chrome but it doesn't function properly outside of IE. So it leads me to believe it's only an IE problem.
I would have just abandoned IE all together but the problem is that I have a couple webpages that require IE plus that wouldn't actually fix the problem. I've upgraded all the way to IE10 and walked it back to IE8 with no change. I've run CCleaner, Malwarebytes, RougeKiller, Kaspersky TDSS, and Hitman Pro to check for viruses or malware that would affect the browser. I thought maybe it was a problem with my ISP traffic but I can tracert the pages with complete connections and I've gone through some online tutorials for refreshing and fixing errors through the command prompt but that's not working either.
Any suggestions would be greatly apprecia... Read more

A:Help with individual websites not loading in IE8

IE 8...is the problem, IMO.
I run IE 8 in my XP dual-boot scenario...and for several months (almost a year) I have noticed that IE 8 is NOT SUPPORTED at various websites.  Back in the summer, some of these sites used to send out notifications onscreen telling the user that this was the case...now it seems that the approach is "You should already know this" and no notification takes place.
Using an outdated browser (IE 8) with no security updates forthcoming...when there are more current versions (sans the vulnerabilities of IE 8) is just not very good "safe surfing" modus operandi and some websites try to reinforce that by not allowing access via IE 8.
OTOH...I can access these same websites quite easily if I use my Win 7 (IE 11) or use Firefox as my browser (either Win 7 or XP).
I suggest that you not even want to use IE 8 with any version of Win 7...those more current versions of IE are more secure and more welcome at websites.

To start I'm going to be totally honest, I am completely techy illiterate, if you could it would be great if you'd break everything down into simple steps
So my problem is to do with making movies
I have a couple of videos I've made and uploaded to my laptop and I really want to edit them in a more personal way.
What I want to be able to do is to put pictures and text over the movie, in a way that you can still see the movie running behind.
If it helps one of the videos i want to edit is a clip of my dog running across a field, and to it i want to add doodley/cartoon style pictures like a sun in the top corner and flowers down the bottom, i don't want these images to move, just to sit there looking pretty throughout.
Once again I'm sorry it's so long, and I'm sorry if I'm not entirely clear with what I want, but thank you so much for your help xx

I'm stuck with a script again and would appreciate it if anyone can help point me in the right direction. I have a long rolling log which I want to split up into individual files. The following is indicative of the start of entries where each starts on a new line followed by an unpredictable number of lines of text:

I want to split the above into:

concatenating the contents into one file when the entry shows the same file name and has a suffix of _01, _02, _03 etc. I have only coded for 6 suffixes but there are likely to be more than that. A single file entry will always be _01.

I had to insert @@@ into the log on the line above every file entry for 2 reasons - 1) as a delimiter for splitting the file for the Array and 2) I need to preserve the line with the file details as I need it as the first line in the split file and as subsequent headings where there is concatenation. (Using the line with the file as a delimiter doesn't work for me as it is removed when loaded into the array).

I thought I had cracked it but not so. I was also aiming to have split files numbered consecutively but I couldn't achieve that. I would get the first file as 1 and the second one as 8 etc. I can wear the split file numbers ... Read more

You could either make a shortcut for the program and paste this shortcut into the different profiles of the users which can be found in the documents and settings folder. you should paste the shortcut in the desktop folder in every profile. And one more thing on the programs main *.exe file right click on it and make sure the security permissions are set to everyone or the selected users you want to give to.

I wasn't sure when the right time to tell experts about this was, but I've decided it's now or else I'm going to go crazy. I have a few very talented geeks in my circle of friends and acquaintances, and there's one dude in particular who I'm not sure if I should concern myself with him or not. He's blind like me, in fact his vision's worse than mine, but he seems to be holding expert knowledge back. He can program, and my other friend says that he had to clean up his computer from his own creations, and the viruses this guy creates, seemingly for fun, are really not harmful, but they do pose annoyances for users. For instance, another one of his crew created the random cursing virus which for like a minute or so, shoots insults at the user up and down the screen. I dared the guy to send me a copy, (so I could send it to Eset, of course), and he won't. He has also talked of creating things much more sinister, yet he's a nice enough guy. I'm not concerned with him attacking me, for he knows that you don't mess with Chromebuster, and if you do, you get in hot water, so I'm asking you folks what to do about people like this. What about others whom he might want to mess with? How can I stop him? This guy also claims that there is a way to access the BIOS from inside the OS after it is booted up just for your information. Any advice you have would be great. Thanks.

A:I'm curious about a particular individual in my circle

In my opinion, people who boast that they can hack and such, can't really hack. I don't see why anybody would risk telling even their friends about hacking/viruses if they're planning on some big project to hurt people.

Where can I get specific individual .dll files? How difficult is it to update a .dll file?

I have been downloading and running various .dll repair programs that claim to fix everything. Unfortunately, none of these programs have fixed or replaced the .dll files my System File Checker lists as corrupted and not reprojectable.

I am looking fo these specific files used by Windows Defender in Windows 7:

I have never manually installed a .dll file, but I learn quickly and know how to follow directions. Can someone point me to a "how-to" instruction list for replacing corrupted .dll files? Is it a relatively simple task once I have good .dll files? I would rather not have to pay $200 to someone like the Best Buy Geek Squad just to make what hopefully are minor system changes. Any advice is appreciated.

A:Where can I get specific individual .dll files?

You can extract them from the win 7 install media,

Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD

If you don't have one you can download one here,

Windows 7 Direct Download Links, Official Disk Images from Digital River

I just used 7-Zip and found those files in the install.wim, you have to grab the right folder once inside but it's all explained in the tutorial.

What I would like to do is make it so that when one specified program plays sound it will mute all the other programs. Also being able to do this between 3/4 programs would be nice.

Rough example, acceptable:
Teamspeak (VOIP App) and EVE-Online (or any other game) are running. I want to hear my teamates more than the game, but do not want to mute the game completely. So it is setup that when TS wants to play sound, the PC raises TS sound level to 100% and drops EVE to 0% sound.

Better example, concurrent apps:
TS, EVE, and Internet Radio (or another music app) are running. EVE and internet radio are playing together nicely (and they do), however I still want to hear my teammates. So the setup is such that when TS plays sound it mutes EVERYTHING else, in this case being EVE and the audio app.

Awesome, probably unlikely:
TS, Internet Radio, and a game with intermittent sound is running. So we set things us where TS is priority 1, Game is Priority 2, and Internet Radio is in the doghouse with Priority 3. When TS plays sound it mutes everything, when game plays sound it mutes the music but cannot override TS. As stated the music is in the doghouse so all it gets to mute is crickets outside.

I am aware of selective program audio leveling with the Mixer in Windows 7 and it honestly does a good job of running everything concurrently, but auto-mute would be cool.

How can I go about blocking individual websites without messing with my firewall. My kid has been grounded and I want to block a few specific sites from him. One is runescape.com and another is addictinggames.com. I have a Win ME computer. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Blocking individual websites.

Your going to have a hard time getting that done. Do you have Windows 98 as your profile shows.

I recently bought Star Wars the Original Radio Drama on audiobook. I want to copy/rip this into mp3 files so I can listen to them on my phone and/or mp3 player. I have windows 8.1 and using media player to rip them. However, the problem occurs when I insert the second disc and media player starts ripping the cd without changing the names of the tracks. I didn't notice this until I was on the third disc. Now I have multiple versions with the same title and haven't been able to tell them apart other than deleting them.

I'd like to do this with each disc its own titles, etc. I don't want to do this via iTunes, which every online website gives as the way to do this. I also don't want them in one large file. I'd like to find a stopping point now and then. Any help, including ink to different programs that will work, would be helpful.

was just wondering how you can protect individual folders?

Apart from putting a password on the whole system is there a way of password protecting newly created folders?

Help would be much appreciated

A:Protecting individual folders?

Right click on the folder, then properties, then sharing, then tick make this folder private.
At the bottom of the window is a link to the help file.

EDIT: Assuming you are using XP

I am not that familiar with Windows 98 since I used 95 for a few years. I set Windows to allow individual user settings. Then I set up each users account. When you load Windows, instead of prompting for a username and password. It goes ahead and signs you in the generic Windows settings. How can I set it to prompt for a username and password?

A:Windows individual settings

Start>Settings>CP>Network. In the "Primary Network Logon" dropdown box select "MS Family Logon"

Hey guys, so I was wondering what your opinion is on the best way of downloading individual songs?

I use torrents to pretty much download everything including albums and what not.

But sometimes it's just one song I want.

Usually I use youtube to find the song, then rip the mp3 from the video using a website.

But I'm getting kinda tired of that way.

I was wondering if there's any other alternatives besides limewire?

A:Best way to download individual songs

Hmm...try an mp3 aggregator like Beemp3 or AirMP3.

I want to set:
HDD 1 - never sleep
HDD 2 - never sleep
HDD 3 - sleep after 1h of inactivity

Any chance windows 7 can do it?

A:How to set individual HDD power options ?

Welcome to the forums!

Are these internals or externals? If internal or usb powered externals they will go to sleep when your computer does. I must admit I don't really understand your question though.

Hi, how do i back up just a program and not a full system image or clone or back up everything at once? i want to back up iTunes at certain times when i have loaded say, 10 cd's into it. should i create an folder of iTunes on my external HDD or (on my internal hard drive), just save it into that folder every time as time goes by? i don't understand how the system works. i'm confused. is there a program that can help with? thank you

A:back up individual programs?

You can not backup programs.

The different components used to install programs are spread across lots of different system directories, including information embedded in the Registry (which is itself, a collection of files).
