Preferred Solution: STEPS TO UPGRADE/REPLACE an MFM hard drive with an IDE-class hard drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi guys,

So let me explain my situation. I have a 15 month old laptop, with a dying hard drive. Quite frequently when it spins up, the hard drive makes a horrible buzzing/scraping noise. I decided I will invest the money and replace it for the $100 and get a faster one (7200 rpm).

Here's the catch. I have an upgrade disk on order, and only an OEM backup disk (Vista) to reformat.

Whats the best way to replace the hard disk and use an upgrade media to use 7 on my computer?

A:Upgrade and Replace Hard Drive

Pull the HDD out of the laptop. Attach it to your desktop, assuming you have one.

When new HDD for laptop arrives, attach that to desktop as well.

Use Clonezilla to clone the old HDD to the new.

Take new HDD out of desktop and put in laptop. Boot the laptop as normal. Enjoy. Remove old laptop HDD from desktop and phyiscally destroy it if there's sensitive data on it. Throw it out after.

Upgrade to Windows 7 on the laptop in any way you see fit.

My primary HDD was failing so I backed it up and replaced it with a larger 1TB drive.  After reinstalling everything the new drive is displaying the same size as my old drive and the extra space available is unallocated.  I can allocate it as
a separate drive but I find that annoying and would prefer to just have my primary C: drive show up with all of the available space.  I formatted the extra space and made it available separately as drive G hoping that I could EXPAND drive C but that option
is not highlighted as selectable on drive C for some reason.  Should I just live with this extra space or is there a way to easily combine C and the new G space?

Any 3.5" drive at 2T or under should work fine.  Upgrading the CPU would mean buying used - these CPUs went out of production not long after your system was current - and that was a decade ago.

Hi,

I disabled the optical drive from Windows System folder because it was faulty and slowing down my computer.

However, now, a virus has stopped from starting Windows.

Since this configuration of Windows on the Hard Drive, can I replace the Hard Drive with a new one so it can:

A. Reset my configuration to allow a Windows Installation disk to boot up from the "newly installed" optical drive,

B. Erase any prior infected files I may have had on the previous Hard Drive.

Thank you,

P.S.

The computer is a Dell Inspirion 2200 Notebook.

That would be the idea if you have it set to boot from disk in the system BIOS. The CD/DVD must have first priority over the HDD to boot.

EightForums community,

I have an HP Desktop (Pavilion p6331p) and I did a clean install of Windows 8.

Recently, however, the hard drive has failed (I used the tools in the BIOS to figure that out). I'll turn it on, it will function for a few minutes, and then give me a blue screen (even in Safe Mode).

I probably need a new hard drive, so I have some questions:

Would this one work (link)? It's a good price and would be a slight upgrade from my previous 750GB to 1TB.

I don't really want to go through the pain of re-installing everything, but if its failing then that's probably a pretty good sign...

I appreciate your help and suggestions while I try and figure this problem out.

Thanks,

David

Hi David.
I am not really sure there's such a tool in BIOS that can diagnose your HD but BSOD's can happen due to various problems in your system, it can be HD, memory, power supply, corrupted system files and the list goes on.
Having said that, you can download this free Hiren's BootCD 15.2 - All in one Bootable CD ? www.hiren.info. burn it to CD/USB and boot up from it. The Hiren's Boot CD contains a lot of software including HD diagnostics from different vendors, so you might want to try it before buying a new HD.

Would this one work (link)? It's a good price and would be a slight upgrade from my previous 750GB to 1TB.

I use HD's from different vendors: Seagate, Hitachi, WD and any of them is good provided you have a good cooling environment. My computer case is ANTEC 900 and it has Fans blowing directly to the HD's so they are just warm instead of burning hot and that makes a big different for the lives of the HD's.

Hope this helps !!!

My 80 GIG hard drive is making grinding noises and is about to give out. Best-Buy has a bargain 160 GIG drive on sale today ($39) so I am doing the obvious this afternoon and going to replace mine.
I would like to have some assurance I am taking all the correct steps before i shut down my PC and cannot get back online for advise.
1. I made a complete backup copy of my C: and Da partition on one drive) onto a seperate external hard drive using NERO.
2. I made a startup disk on 3 1/2 disk.
3. I have my Windows ME disk available.
4. The old hard drive has not completely given out so I prefer to try to extract all the files directly rather then through the external backup.

What I intend to doLEASE ADVISE ME ON THIS PART
1. Mount the new drive as SLAVE and use DOS XCOPY to copy all files from old to new drive.
2. Remove old drive and set new drive as MASTER
3. If those steps didnt work then start computer with 3 1/2 disk and install Windows ME from CD (oops-will I have CD drivers? how do I load those?)
4. If I get Windows loaded then load NERO software and use restore function to extract backup from the external hard drive.
restart the computer

Am I on the right track? should that 3 1/2 disk have any more files? maybe some drivers to see the CD and the external hard drive?
Will I have to mess with the BIOS I get to it from F8 key-right?
What steps have I missed? Should I have any other backups of system files?

A:Hard drive replacement-steps ok?

This is what I would do Knot ok
You have 2 hdd's and the 80 gig is still ok yes?
Make sure the second (back up) drive is empty and just back up your .exe progs like nero or firefox etc.
Make sure no ME OS files are on it, remove it and set the jumpers to slave.
Make a ME boot disk then install your new drive jumpered as master.
You will of course have to fdisk it and format it.
Install ME then add the second drive. Then just transfer your .exe files back onto the new drive to a folder of your choosing.

Background: I was trying to fix an issue with DVDs not playing correctly on my computer and trying to find codec that would work, problem was not always there. I presumably downloaded something that caused problems. I noticed my main drive (C):\ was low, and I needed space to install k-lite codec pack. So, I moved some files over to my secondary drive (F):\, about a gig.

Problem revealed itself immediately before moving the files, before installing k-lite codec pack. The gig I just freed up disappeared and the amount of space was fluctuating between 0kb and 15-25mb. Moved some more stuff, another gig, same thing happened.
I noticed something weird, I saw in another post similar to my experience, that in the bottom right hand corner where the icons are bubble popped up saying something about "new hardware detected, old may not be usable." Not quite sure if those words are close or exact to be honest, didn't write it down. Unfortunately I had ran out on my CA etrust security suite, so I had to repurchase this, but only did after this all took place. I'm sure I set myself up for this problem. I have my O/S disk ( C: ) sepeated from My Applications disc ( D: ) . Then I store all my Data on other Harddrives.

I want to upgrade my applications disk to a larger capacity, but I worry about maintaining the integrity of Disknames (IDs) so I won't have to re-install all my Applications again.

My plan is to make an Image or Clone of the Apps disc on the New HD and then change the Name of the Apps disk ( D: ) to new name ( Z: ) . Then I would need to reboot, before naming the New Apps disc as the new D:

My worry is the effect of rebooting without any Apps disc at all.. and would everything work after renaming the new Disc back to D: and making a final reboot?

Any advice of steps and procedure to make this work will be greatly appreciated.

Also.. advise on which program to use to make the image/clone would also be helpfull.

Thanks,
CS

A:Advice on Steps to Migrate Apps Hard drive to larger Disk

Your strategy is sound, as is keeping Apps and Data on separate partitions. One way you could approach it is:

1) Image the Apps drive (storing the image to a different drive, of course)

2) Shut the system down, remove the Apps drive.

3) Install the new drive

4) Restore the image you made to the new drive. Drive letter shouldn't be an issue in that case, but if it is, simply change the drive letter as necessary in Disk Management.

Even if you have to change the drive letter to regain the original Apss drive letter, there should be no problems with the apps being usable (once the drive letter is the same as the original).

As for imaging programs, I highly recommend Acronis True Image, but not the latest versions (2010 & 2011), as there have been many complaints regarding those versions. Instead, you can buy version 2009 on ebay for a fraction of the price. Contrary to what some may say, 2009 is compatible with both 32 & 64 bit win7.

That said, if you have a new system or a new motherboard, 2009 may (or may not) have issues with the HD controller (i.e., not see the HDs).

If you'd rather not go the 2009 route, you could always download the trial version of 2011 and see how it works on your system. Be sure and create the Acronis rescue disk if you do try 2011.

A:Can I replace my C hard drive?

Its possible for sure and not too hard either.

Once you have the drive you want to install it will either come with software or you can download free software from the manufacturer of the drive to clone the old hard drive to the new drive. Once cloned just disconnect the old drive and connect the new drive in its place and everything should be as it was but with more space.

You can then add the old drive back in a secondary drive for additional storage.

As a example if you buy a Seagate drive you can use DiscWizard from Seagate to migrate your system over to the new drive: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.j...toid=d9fd4a3cdde5c010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

You can also use third party paid programs with a greater range of options such as Acronis TrueImage or Symantec's Ghost to clone the drive.

2. Is there any problem with replacing it with say a larger hard drive (60 or 120 gb)?

3. Will it come with windows xp already on it or can I simply load it from the disk that came with the computer?

It seems fairly simple to replace......or am I missing something?

I've been supporting this Power Mac G4 since it was new in June of 2002.
Other than installing a SCSI card for the photo printer and the occasional cleaning, it's worked flawlessly.
It's in daily use for editing and annotating Aerial photos.
Yesterday I had to reinstall Illustrator for a weird parsing error I've never seen before, and it got me to thinking that the HD has been used heavily for nearly 6 years.
This machine is the backbone of this small business, and they're willing to do what's necessary, so my question is whether it's a good idea to preemptively replace this HD.
6 years seems like a long run to me, but I've never replaced an HD based on age alone, so what do the experts think?

Hey guys, I'm having a issue with a HP Elite computer, its now saying on startup that the hard drive is going to fail and must be replaced. It still works great after boot up. Is there a program that i can use to make a exact copy of the original onto another then just replace the hard drive.

I have read that a program XXCopy may be able to do this for me.

Thanks for any help.

I received a Samsung SSD as a gift and would like to swap out my hard drive.  Looking at documentation (or lack of), on-line at HP and the internet at large, there is no information on how to access my hard drive.  I tried the basics - remove the battery, remove the multi-media bay, remove the screws from the bottom, but after that, I am at a loss.   Looking at videos and documents for other HP latops, it appears that I should remove the 3 small screws above the media bay, but I have 7 or so (going from memory).   Suppose I did that... then what?  Any help or guidance is MUCH appreciated.

Will I be able to replace the hard drive in my Emachine T3418 with a 2 or 3 TB one or is it a fixed drive (non-replaceable)....? I have an external hard drive plugged into one of my USB ports but the C drive is getting low on disk space again & I don't want to delete any more tubes or graphics that I've collected over the years to use in Paint Shop Pro or Animation Shop....I've already deleted tons of them & have some saved on my flash drive, but it's only a 2 GB one that I got free with PSP X3 Ultimate..... Thanks,Afoxybear3

A:I was wondering if I can replace the hard drive in...

Your Laptop has a ultra ata 133 or PATA HDD. They are not that plentiful anymore and the largest you can get in 2.5 (laptop) is 259GB and they run at 5400RPM.The specs for your laptop say your drive runs at 7200 RPM so, you would sacrifice some speed and your laptop is probably not that fast as it is.I would suggest This instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220654&cm_re=usb_drive-_-20-220-654-_-Produ...This is a great little 32GB usb drive at a killer price.

A:Aspire ZC-606 How can I replace hard drive

before changing the HDD i would try another SATA cable, the part number is: 50.U86D5.002 to open the back of your ZC, you need to open the 2 rubber feet at the bottom of the back cover and unscrew the 2 screws; then with a pin you need to push in the little hole of the DVD drive until it slide off; then you can lift the back cover.
