Q: unresponsive button

I have a problem on a family research site. If I am using IE i get no response when I press the search button. I am able to enter all the details and then cannot search. If I try to leave the site I cannot. All I get is a Beep Sound as if I have to X something else first.
If I use Mozilla it works fine.
Everything worked well up until a yesterday. At the same time I tried to download Active X and downloaded "Versalsoft" along with it. That was a pain and it took ages to get it out of my machine.
Can you help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, yesterday I got my new parts for the upgrade my pc has been dying for.

I got an NZXT Hades case, a Phenom II 965 BE (the C3 one) an AsRock 880gxh motherboard, 2 sticks of OCZ Gold DDR3 and a arctic freezer 7 pro for good measure. Now it wasn't the first time I've built a system from scratch so I knew what I was doing to an extent and eventually I had it up and running including the old parts required from my previous system; HDD, 2 DVD Drives (1 RW), my HIS Radeon 3870xt and my 500w Aspire PSU.

Now the first odd thing I noticed upon plugging in the PSU's powerchord and flicking the switch was that my USB mouse and my PS/2 keyboard lit up before I'd pushed the power button. Upon pressing it, it powered up as you would expect but once at the welcome screen the mouse wouldn't move, eventually I sussed that it was a driver issue so I fixed that, baring in mind I had powered down several times by now with no issues turning it back on. Finally got things 'right' and had it on for a good few hours. I shut it down as I went to bed (had to hold down the power button as a game had crashed and a simple press of the button did nothing) and flicked the switch on the power supply as the mouse and keyboard didn't go off when the system shutdown. I come to it this morning, flicked the PSU switch and the mouse came on along with the keyboard. However pressing the power switch resulted in NOTHING.

I looked into the case and realised I had mixed up... Read more

It seems randomly my Start button does not respond to clicks. The Windows button on my keyboard only brings up the Start Menu about 30% of the time (I have to spam it repeatedly). Along with the Start button problem, Alt-Tabbing no longer works.

These two problems usually don't occur as soon as I boot up, but I can't identify what causes them either. Any help?

I came across a very frustrating issue with Windows 10 today that caused my Start button and Cortana to become completely unresponsive. I spent a couple hours trying to troubleshoot this and came back here where I'd found so many helpful solutions a long time ago.

Here's what @lochlomonder suggested:

Okay, since Windows 10 doesn't normally shut down fully, hold down the Windows and R keys together to get the Run dialogue box open, type in cmd, and then hit Enter. Within the Command Prompt dialogue box, type in the following and then hit Enter: shutdown /s /t 0 (that's a zero at the end). Note: this will turn off your PC, so ensure you've saved all your files and exited applications properly.
Once the PC shut down fully, I started it back up and my Start button and Cortana came back to life. Thanks!

I'm having issues with my windows start button and taskbar. I had a topic in the malware removal section and believe all the issues there were solved. Here is a link to that topic.

When I start my computer I can choose programs that have icons on my desktop almost instantly after reaching the desktop screen. These same programs on my task-bar aren't accessible though. the windows start button wont click and in my notification area avast loads by the clock but volume control and the others don't. When I scroll over the task-bar my cursor turns into an hour glass as if it is still trying to load but the problem continues even after five minutes of it being on so, far I have had it snap out of it once, but every other time it remains in this state after start up. As I am typing this my task-bar just became click-able and my volume control is now showing, avast updated as well. It has taken at least half an hour for this to happen though. How can i make it load on start up like it should?

I was surfing the internet when Avast resident shield showed message after message from the taskbar that a malware was found and taken care of. As soon as one message would disappear, another would appear. I ALT-F4'ed the internet and that stopped it. Well just in case any malware/virus made it through, I decided to do my typical scans and PC tool cleaning using:Rkill, Malwarebytes Anti-malware, Superantispyware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Avast! full scan and boot-time scan. All those tools and programs found some spyware, malware, and virus and disposed of those infections.Once I did all that I thought I was clean and can continue my life. The next time I rebooted however I noticed that my taskbar and START button could be seen but was unresponsive. I also noticed that the taskbar didn't have the usual program icons on the bottom right, and whenever I would put my mouse over anyplace on the taskbar or START button the mouse cursor would go from arrow to hourglass. All icons on my desktop work perfectly fine. When I would push CTRL-ALT-DEL to get the task manager it would take forever to show, but when I would use Process Explorer or IKnowPS they would pop up instantly. Another thing I noticed is that Process Explorer or IKnowPS would show sometimes two or three different explorer.exe running at the same time and one of them would show as explore.Exe (capital E on the extension). Hi there,

This recently happened to me with my Surface Pro 4. All you gotta do is Ctrl+Shift+Esc (opens TaskMgr) and do File > Run. Type in 'powershell' and check the box that says Run task with administrative privileges. Once you get into PS, run this:

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
Should fix it right then and there, but you may need to restart.

So my left touchpad button has become unresponsive.
It doesn't seem to be mechanically damaged.
when I use the touchpad utility and swap functionality between the two buttons, it doesn't perform either so I'm guessing this is a physical rather than driver issue.

Been trying to fix this for 2 days now. It's not a physical button but more like a lit touch pad type of thing. You barely tap it to turn on/off. It's stuck on & I have to unplug the monitor to turn it off.
I am wondering if the slight static electricity has fried something? You know like in the winter when you get static on your fingers when you touch certain things? It happened a few weeks ago as well but I fixed it somehow. Can't remember how I did it though. Any suggestions?

Somehow the windows started and the desktop appeared but i found that when i tried refreshing the desktop,it kinda stuck up and none of the buttons were responding including-the windows button, task bar, action center, search bar.
All i had to do was to long press the power button and shut it down.
I tried troubleshooting the startup but it said "windows could not repair the startup."
I tried restoring it but it said "no restore points have been created".
I havent changed any hardware or added any new software/app.
I dont know how to come out of this and put my pc back to normal.

Hi, apparently I have some suspicious stuff on my computer. Like the title says, I have the Google (EDIT: and other search engines) redirection to ads problem in Firefox. On top of this, though, Chrome is unresponsive on startup (the "kill pages" box comes up, but isn't able to do anything). Also, every so often Windows will say that some host process has become unresponsive and will stop it. I have a Toshiba Satellite L4550-S5976 running under Windows 7. When I start it up (and if I catch it at the right time), the touchpad buttons work fine for a few minutes. After the machine completely boots, the touchpad button problems start - the left button performs as the right button and the right button does nothing.

On a lark, I plugged in a USB mouse and rebooted. When I do that, the mouse works fine AND the touchpad buttons work properly. Carrying around a mouse isn't always convenient so I'd like to have the machine work as expected.

I tried updating the touchpad drivers - that did not fix the problem. I even reinstalled Windows 7 on the machine - that did not fix the problem either.

Any ideas what I could do next to fix this problem?

Thanks, Brian

In the last day the laptop has been slowing down, gradually. from being longer in start up to sluggish with getting to web pages, to be slow when i clicked for the browser to open.

In the last half day I have only been able to do anything in safe mode as after around three clicks into the browser eventually opening the system would FREEZE.

I googled the error and came across

and there was also a suggestion to get hijackthis and get a scan which would be helpful, it was generally reported in quite a few places (unrelated sites etc), to those in the know ...I got hijackthis and did a scan
I also ran a malwarebytes scan.

HP Pavilion dv7
Win7 Professional x64

This problem started after I left my computer on sleep for a couple hours. When I woke it up, the touchpad taps and left mouse button clicks brought up the right-click context menu and nothing on the taskbar responded to the cursor hovering over it. Also for some reason pressing the Windows key on the keyboard wouldn't bring up the Start menu. The only way I've found to correct this is to plug in a USB mouse and press the right MB on it. I also was able to fix it one time by uninstalling the Synaptics drivers and letting Windows restart and find the mouse, but after trying to reinstall the Synaptics drivers then uninstalling them again after the problem reappeared this method no longer works. In either case left click functionality is restored but there is no right click functionality period on the touchpad/buttons. However the USB mouse that I plug in works normally. Also after left click is restored, everything on the taskbar and elsewhere responds as it should with the exception of not being able to right click on anything (which sucks in W7). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Synaptics drivers to see if that would fix it but after reinstalling them and restarting, the problem came back. Another thing I've noticed is that even with the Synaptics drivers installed the vertical scroll area doesn't respond.... Read more

Hi every one,
Recently I purchased new PC,
After installing windows XP Pro SP3 I found that there is a missing button in Power option properties. The missing button is (When I press the sleep button on my computer), I can find only (When I press the power button on my computer).
My system configuration is as follow
Mother board Gigabyte EP45-UD3R Rev 1.1
My graphic card is ATI Radeon HD 5670
Windows XP SP3
RAM 4Gb Kingston DDRII
CPU Core 2 Quad 2.66 GHz
It worth saying that I can shutdown, hibernate or put my PC into sleep mode, so the functions are working but only the button is missing.
I will appreciated very much if some can advise me how to restore the missing button. Is there some option in BIOS that will enable this button?
I contacted Gigabyte customer support, but they directed me to Microsoft, I also contacted ATI but they directed me to Microsoft or BIOS settings. In my BIOS I can't find any option that may affect this button. Any advise will be appreciated
Best regards

A:[SOLVED] Button of (When I press sleep button) is not available in my Power option pr

Does the case actually have a separate Sleep Button? I suspect it's not even connected, as the motherboard manual doesn't show a connection for a Sleep Button, only a Power Button.
Windows Power Options won't list it, as it doesn't exist.

If you have a Sleep Button on the keyboard, it might not be listed in Power Options either. That would be up to the Driver software to add that option. You may have to use the software that came with the keyboard to configure the sleep button on the keyboard.

Hello, I'm having a problem with my Thinkpad L430. The right bottom button on the Touchpad is registering as a left click rather than a right click (which normally brings up the pop-up menu. It is enabled and is set to this in the Elan software. I've also tried changing the command, however it simply doesn't work. When I click the 'mouse button reverse' option in Windows, the left click brings up the pop-up menu, so it probably isn't a software issue but to get a second opinion would be great. I have all of the latest drivers and software updates, and the Elan software is set up to default. I have also completely reinstalled Windows and rolling back to an earlier driver version, but it still isn't working. Any advice on how to make the right button work again would be greatly appreciated! I'm running Windows 7. Thanks.

Hello all,A few months ago I started noticing that my main power on button would not work, so I couldn't start my Yoga 700 laptop. Then on, I started using the Novo button then going into the normal start up mode, since my main power button doesn't work. However, nowadays, when my computer has shut down/lost battery the Novo button doesn't display the menu screen for normal start up. The keyboard flashes and the fans start up but there is no menu screen (it's all black). So now, I have no way of starting up my computer normally. However, I do realise now that if I take out my RAM card and put it back in, the Novo menu pops up and I can go into normal start up. Is there any way of fixing this issue or do I just have to move onto another device? I'm no technical whizz, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know this is possible, because I've done it before (a long time ago). How do I change which browser comes up when pressing the web browser button that's to the right of the power button?  Google doesn't have an answer.

Hey Peregrin72,  Great question! You could first try changing your default Internet Browser setting in Windows.  1. Click the Start button 2. Type 'default'3. Click Default Programs4. Click Set Your Default Programs5. Click on the desired browser and then click Set this program as default.  Let me know the results of that change. There is also a registry change that may help.

The joypad I have is basically a PS2 joypad with a usb connection. It has a d-pad, two analogue sticks (which can also be pressed as buttons 11 and 12) and 4 buttons on the shoulders of the joypad.

The difference is this joypad has 6 buttons to be used by the right thumb (as opposed to the PS2's 4 buttons. These 2 extra buttons are located to the right-hand side of where the "Triangle" and "Circle" buttons are found on a PS2 joypad, and are buttons 5 and 6 on the joypad. This changes the 4 shoulder buttons ("L1", "R1", "L2" and "R2" on a PS2 joypad) from buttons 5, 6, 7 and 8 to buttons 7, 8, 9 and 10, respectively.

Now, my problem lies in the fact that most games (EA games especially) only recognise buttons 1 to 8. So what im wondering is can anyone suggest a way of changing the assigned buttons on a joypad, short of actually opening it up and swapping the wires!! I was thinking something along the lines of editing the drivers, if thats possible. But if that would work, im not sure where i would find the driver files.

I have a Dell inspiron laptop, with windows XP. Just in case that makes any difference.

I have a Windows 7 and I use an ALPS touch pad driver and all of a sudden the left button on the touchpad now is a right button (opens the right click menu).

Any ideas how to fix this?

P.S. I have two sets of buttons one above and one below the touchpad, it is the one above the touchpad that has the problem while the one below it is fine.

Hi everyone, I have a very weird error here...
My PC is a P4, 3,4GHZ, 1GB RAM, Radeon x800xl running WIN XP with SP2
But the real problem is my keyboard... I got an a4 tech kehyboard AntiRSI keyboard, and a few minutes ago while I pressed alt+tab to get out of a game (PES5) it went in stand by mode....and the problem is I can't even get out of it...
I restarted, went in windows again and tried to see what proccesses are running and pressed ctrl + alt + delete and it went in stand by again...
Anyway I founded that this is caused when pressing the left ALT button...My pc seems to confuse it as my sleep button ( I tested this by going in Control Panel - Power Options - Advanced and played with the "When I press my sleep button on my computer" and selected different options and when I pressed the left alt button it did what I selected in there )

Does anyone know what's the cause of this and how I can fix it?

For the past couple of months, I've had an issue where the button that normal puts the computer to sleep has been replaced with the shutdown button because it thinks i've downloaded updates, even when I haven't been connected for a week.

I wouldn't normally mind something like this but, it makes the computer start up and shutdown take forever. thanks
*!*!*!* Please refer to later post as I've explained the problem better there. *!*!*!*

Hi, I am having a problem with booting up my computer. Everytime I turn the computer on, the HDD light comes on but the power light doesn't. When I press the reset button, everything starts working and the computer boots up. I think the problem might be the wires that get plugged into the motherboard. I don't know how to correctly install them and the manual that came with the motherboard doesn't help at all. I have a GA-7IXE4 motherboard with 1000 MHZ AMD and 256 MB RAM. If anybody could assist me with this problem, please do so. If anybody knows how the wires are suppose to be plugged into the motherboard correctly, please let me know because I think that might be the main problem. Thanks.

A:Reset button acts as power button

It shows the proper connections on page 15 of the manual.

Neither the power on or reset button need any polarity concerns when connecting, they are both use open/closed type switches.

The reset connector is label RE, THE power connector is labeled PW.

If you have a mouse, you can use it to delete the touch pad driver and re-install it.

My Dell Studio has just crashed and wont restart. The mute and volume up buttons are flashing and the volume down button is solidly lit. I could not find the diagnostic code when searching the internet. I could find pretty much every other diagnostic code apart from this one.

Any advice would be most welcome.

A:Dell Studio 1535 wont start. Blinking mute and volume up button, solid volume down button.

Hi Andy,
Welcome to Dell community!
As you have correctly pointed out, the diagnostic code that you have mentioned is not among the codes available to isolate the failure for a Studio 1535 laptop. The closest code is: blinking Mute LED and Volume up LED, and an off Volume down LED which is for USB controller initialization failure. Disconnect any external devices connected and try powering on the computer.
Reseating the memory modules too can help us. Please refer the following link for the Studio 1535 service manual for instructions: http://bit.ly/10PrLgH
If issue persists, the laptop’s motherboard has to be replaced. Refer the following link to check the computer’s warranty status: http://dell.to/10pMa86
