Lenovo Y580 won't boot, only turns on and stays on black screen.

Q: Lenovo Y580 won't boot, only turns on and stays on black screen.

So I have a Lenovo Y580 Ideapad I bought circa 2013/14. I've kept it pretty updated and all since then. It had Windows 8 last time I was able to use it (a few months now sadly). Before this incident, it had already happened before but it would come back on after a few tries. One time it took a whole week of trying to turn it on and off and finally it just popped up again. But this previous time I accidently let it die (I always had it charging once this issue began because I was afraid it would die and do this) and it hasn't been able to boot. I've researched this issue and I've not been able to find one specific answer. So I decided to come here and have some seasoned techs look at my issue personally. I uploaded some videos on youtube in order for you all to get a look at it and what it does when I poke around at it. Also, Idk if it would be of any relevance, but before it died it had had a long standing issue of the touchpad not working. Occasionally it would twitch or work for a few minutes but it was mostly dead (the touchpad I mean). I was never able to fix it (also I just got lazy and bought a mouse). Here is video #1 so you get a basic idea of **bleep** it's doing: https://youtu.be/FwVumwp7MFAHere is video #2 of me poking around on it and doing the restart power thing (thass tha technical name right?) so you can see what it does and doesn't do:https://youtu.be/FwVumwp7MFAIf there is any more info I can give please let me know. I want to try and fix this myself, and am confident I can (and I have friends who are good at this stuff too). If it's just impossible for me to fix, then let me know what you think I should do to restore my extremely expensive brick to working order again. Thanks you all for existing! P.S.: I've also connected it to external monitor, and nothing shows up.

Preferred Solution: Lenovo Y580 won't boot, only turns on and stays on black screen.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Got the computer from a family member, I tried fixing it for them first and I thought it was the video card so I tried a different one and still nothing. So it was unplugged and stored for months then they just gave it to me. Well I took it home and started messing with it turned it on a cple of times nothing. Moved wires around put different psu in nothing, put it back to normal it started right up powered screen up I got into windows but it had a lot of lag so I went to restart it so I could do a fresh install and screen shut off... note when it wasn't working before this point the cpu fan ran at full rpm when turned on but slowed down when it worked this first time. I turned it on and off cple times nothing unplugged psuand back in it worked enough to reinstall windows and went to restart nothing. When plugged my speakers in to see if it beeps it started up! Its toying with me, restarted it again nothing so next try I pushed on the cpu thinking the mobo was bad it started up and woked for a cple restarts and quit... I tightened. The mobo screws down to the case and worked for awhile and then started acting up on restart. It will turn on once after it sits awhile unplugged with the bios battery out. I'm confused... bad bios or the mobo? I have unplugged all things that aren't needed for start up different hd with same effect. Only thing I haven't tried yet is the ram. A:computer turns on but screen stays black

The PSU was probably bad, replacing it should have fixed it. There may be bad caps on the motherboard or something is grounding on the MOBO to the case and causing it to not boot. Take everything apart. Take Heat Sync off of processor and apply Thermal Paste. Take MOBO out of case and check to see if there are any burn marks, bad caps, or if there are any risers missing off the case keeping the MOBO from touching the case.

Hello everyone. I plugged the HDMI to the laptop, watched a movie, turned it off and slept afterwards. The problem is when I turned it on, the power seems to work and also the keyboard lights up but the monitor won't. What would be the solution to this problem?

A:Lenovo Y50-70 turns on but has black screen

Hi Super2015 ,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
About screen blank state (page25) :
If the time set on the ?Turn off monitor? timer in the operating system expires, the LCD backlight turns off. You can also turn off the LCD backlight by pressing Fn + F2. To end screen blank state and resume normal operation, press any key.
Try pressing FN + F2 again , else FN + F3 to opens the interface for selecting display options to change.
If pressing any key would not work , manually shutdown the pc and unplug any connected cables .
Press the Novo button (item 14 page 82) to power on the machine. Check to see any display on the laptop screen.
Update us how it goes.

My computer was running fine and then suddenly the screen went black. I turned the power off and on and it came up with error message "Unmountable Boot Volume" and then tried to fix the problem but it just stayed on the black screen and never fixed the problem. I turned it off, done the hard reset where I take out the battery and hold the power button for fifteen seconds but it is still the same. I have gone into the mode where I can try to restore the computer but it does not allow me to do that. It say's it is restoring and then just stays black. I have also ran a report where it says the problem is "Hard drive Short DST Check: Failed" and gave me a code of 0SNHWW-7N987K-MFPWMG-60WF03. If there is anything that can be done to help me I would really appreciate it as I use this laptop for work and really need to get it back up and running urgently with minimal cost. Many thanks for your help

On my pentium 4 PC running windows XP Home, very occassionally on boot up, the monitor remains black. If I restart the computer using re-set or by holding the on/off button and then shutting down and then re starting, it boots up fine and the monitor displays clearly. This happens about once every few weeks. Is it nothing or an indication of a problem somewhere. Otherwise the system runs fast and trouble free and is watched over by Norton anti virus, Spywareblaster, Ad-Aware and Spybot. I run disc cleanup and defrag regularly. I am a little suspicious of the video card, but really not sure at all.

Well a first step might be to power down and reseat the vid card and your monitor connection, could be a bit of corrosion.

Hi all, this is my first time posting into the forum and I would like to apologise if i have made some mistakes anywhere so please bear with me.The laptop screen turns black after moments of usage and after a few days of using it the problem slowly disappears on its own. After two weeks, I reset my laptop and the problems came back. The screen turns black and all the activity going on behind stopped instantly. I searched for solutions anywhere and I can't find one, the only thing i can do is holding the power button on and off again. Setting the display to never sleep and turning on screensavers won't solve the problem either. This problem frustrates me very much. Does anyone else have this kind of problem? If so, anyone has any solution regarding this problem? I would appreciate it greatly if there's any solution

A:Lenovo ideapad 700 screen turns black/ hang after ...

I am having this problem with the Edge 2-1580 when running on battery power. Screen shuts off after 15 - 45 minutes of use and I need to hard reset by holding power button. Seems like a lot of people with different models are having this problem, but no solutions. I've tried updating BIOS, drivers, factory resetting, adjusting power settings, all to no avail. I tried chatting with live support last night and "Chris" had me download the Lenovo Solution Center program and do a hardware scan but of course the scan came back with no problems. I can't believe with so many people having this problem that Lenovo hasn't come out with a solution. Sorry I can't help more, but I hope you find an answer!

Context of the problem
Laptop model: L322XBIOS version: A08
I seem to be having virtually the exact same issue as this one.
Except I am on A08.
Basically the laptop will not boot, I cannot even get into the bios because it never boots to the dell logo. It started happening maybe a week ago, but after a few trials normally it would work again and boot into windows. At this point though it will not boot at all.
I have tried his solution at the bottom of the page, but after 30 plus trials it still will not update the firmware to A09.
I am currently completely unable to boot to the dell logo, or windows, every time it tries to start it hangs with the keyboard lit up, and the screen fully black. I can boot to the dos bios update utility as he explains in his post, but again it will not update the firmware ever. Any idea what I should do?
Is there anyway I can force it to boot into the bios so I can try to change some settings? I looked but could not find any jumpers in the documentation for resetting the bios.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A friend came to me for help, and I am leary of doing anything without conferring with the experts. Here is the history:

Originally the PC had a periodic BSOD - 0x0000007B. I was able to boot to the "last known good configuration", and run MalwareBytes (cleaning up a number of Adware problems), and I ran the ESET online scanner (which found nothing). I made a restore point just in case.

After one or two more boots, I once again received the BSOD 0x0000007B. Attempted to reboot using last known configuration to no avail. Now all I get is a black screen after the initial boot messages (no windows splash screen).

I have looked at your guides about running CHKDSK, FIXMBR, FIXBOOT. I'm just a little leary that I may lose data on his hard disk (he says that there is a tremendous amount of music on there). I have a few questions:

1. What will be the impact of CHKDSK on his local files (deletion, damage)?
2. I did type in FIXMBR, and it stated the following:

"This computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record. FIXMBR may damage your partition tables if you proceed. This could cause all the partitions on the current hard disk to become inaccessible. If you are not having problems accessing your drive, do not continue. Are you sure you want to write a new MBR?"

Can I still run this without damage ?

I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing before continuing. I'm assuming this is an XP proble... Read more

A:Lenovo Laptop Screen Turns White Upon Boot?

Hmm sounds like you may have a monitor problem mate - can you get into safe mode?? if you can run these
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2

NB SFC best run for about three runs

if no go then do these
SUPERAntiSpyware | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!
Malwarebytes | Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium
AdwCleaner Download
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
(NB If one is running Kaspersky security it may rant about ADW - just ignore it or disable Kaspersky while the ADW is being used)

One last thing try leaving the battery out unplug form the power source and hold down the power button for around 10-20 seconds and then power up again.

I'm trying to figure out my friends PC issue so I'm going to do some tests but I figured I'd post and see if anyone had any input on what it might be, I believe it could be faulty hardware but I'm gonna try to figure out what possibly..
- Computer is new, about 1 month old
-Windows 7
-If left idle and turned back on, it can stay on for about 15 - 30 minutes until the screen goes black and needs to be shut down again, goes into this screen
-Computer was running and had music playing, screen went black again and music was still playing in the background. So it's a display issue, but the monitor is fine working on another computer
-Says makes like an electrical noise before the screen goes black, mouse won't move

If any suggestions that'd be helpful, thanks

When I boot regularly my screen just turns black prior to logging into windwos, i can hear the log on/off sounds.

It works in safemode with network drivers.

I ran antimalwarebytes and I had one infection by some "Rogueware.lnk".mp3 on my desktop which I removed with mab.

As of right now I'm running ESET online scan in safe mode and it found one infection "Win32/Opencandy".

I can assume that all hardware/drivers are working properly.

Why is my screen turning black all of a sudden when booting and how to get rid ofit?

Any help is welcome.

Thank you.

A quick system restore to a point before you were infected may do the trick ... however, getting into the habit of imaging your drive, is IMO, the number one step in any security policy ... its a lot easier to restore an image than it is to re-install the OS and all of your applications ... let us know how it comes out ...

This will show you how to do a System Restore to restore your Windows 7 system files to an earlier point in time. It's a way to undo system changes to your computer without affecting your personal user files, such as e‑mail, documents, or photos.
System Restore

This will show you how to create a system image (clone) backup of the entire hard drive or partition that Windows 7 is on, and any other selected drive or partition. You can use this image to be able to do a system image recovery to restore the hard drive or partition at boot back to the way it was at the time the backup image was created.

I own a Y580-M772CMH 15.6FHD/i7-3610QM/8G/ laptop with Windows 7 and a few weeks ago I used Ccleaner to clean the registry. Like the dumb stupid person I am I did not pay attention to what it was "cleaning".

Next time I booted up my Laptop it failed to start Windows and gave the following message:

Check cable connection!
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

So next time I pressed F2 while booting to see:

Boot Device Priority
SATA ODD: Optiarc BD ROM BC-5550H
Network Boot: Atheros Boot Agent

To me it looked like I still had both disks working so I put in a Windows ISO before boot to see if I could repair. The System Recovery Options screen showed me no known existing OS on the device.

So I powered down and used One Key Recovery which told me when I clicked to restore to factory conditions that the partition layout has changed.

Finally I used a bootable Partition Wizard and that showed me this:

Note the negative used value at disk 1.
To my layman's eyes it seems like the SSD and HDD, that are normally combined by a Lenovo software Raid are now separate. And something I deleted with Ccleaner by accident caused it (probably).

Main thing is, I actually don't know what the problem is and so don't know how to proceed.

Hi cablecons,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
We would need to isolate the the stage where it causes the issue.
Making the BIOS appear onscreen is a good sign that the sytemboard is functional and we can continue on possible issue with the harddrive or software/drivers.
Here is the hardware manual for parts removal guide.
To start, unplug the charger and remove the battery. Press and hold down the power button (12 seconds) to drain flea power. Connect the AC charger and press the One key recovery button (item6 page 71) and check how it goes.

This supposes to power on the laptop and shows Novo menu.
If same black screen then disconnect the charger and remove the harddrive, press the power button down for 12 seconds. and turn on using the same One key recovery button.
Update us how it goes.

Hello there,

So as the title says, I'm having some problems with my computer. I bought it about 4 weeks ago, and no issues with it other than when I try to play an MMO that would make the graphics card work. The graphics card that is installed in the computer was separately bought and installed, so I'm thinking it might be conflict issues with the card, but I don't know.

The way it happens is, I run the games, I can play for anything from a minute, to 15mins and then my screen says it has disconnected from the image, goes black, and I can hear my computer restart, but my screen stays black. I have to manually power off and back on for my screen to start showing images again. Once restarted i get the "Problem Event Name: Bluescreen" thing.

It's really annoying since I just bought GW2 and I can't play properly any help would be appreciated.

Also, in the Action Center it's said that my Nvidia Graphics Card has stopped working or crashed, multiple times, naming the exact times my computer crashed.. which is why I believe it has to do with my card.

I recommend if you are overclocking any hardware, that you reset these values within the BIOS to their default values in order to increase the stability of your system.

Please run the following tests for your graphics card and RAM:
RAM - Test with Memtest86+
Run Memtest86+ for least 7-8 passes, and preferrly overnight as it can take a while to fully complete.

Test each RAM stick individually, if an error is found then move the same RAM stick into the next DIMM slot and test again, if errors are found for the same RAM stick in every available slot then you have a faulty RAM module. On the other hand, if no errors are found in the next slot or the other slots for the same RAM module, then you have a faulty DIMM slot.

--Desktop Type: Compaq Presario S4200NX

Thanks for the help, I'm hoping to get atleast one of these back online w/o buying a whole new desktop.

A:HELP! Desktop turns on and restarts repeatedly, other turns on to black screen

Desktop 1:

Do you see anything on your screen at all while this is happening?

Have you tried to press the setup key to see if the BIOS will come up and make changes?

Do you have any USB devices (other than keyboard or mouse) hooked up? If so, try disconnecting them and see if it will at least POST or attempt to go into the OS.

WARNING: Before checking the capacitors, disconnect the power cord on your system and press & hold the POWER button to allow the power to discharge! Also, you should always ground yourself before touching computer components to prevent static discharge!

Just FYI, some of the motherboards in this series of HP’s have issues with the capacitors.

You should take a look at the capacitors to see if the tops of them are raised or discolored. Also, if you put your finger on the top of the capacitors, they should feel as if they are INDENTED and not flush or raised. Raising or discoloration (up to and including a black tar looking substance on the tops indicate a leaking capacitor).

Desktop 2:

Any POST sounds (beeps) produced at all?

Have you tried the monitor from Desktop 1 on this one?

Anything at all displayed on the monitor, to include CHECK CABLE message?

Recommendation: Open the case again and ensure that all the cards, memory, drive cables and so forth are all connect properly and not loose or dislodged.

Do you know how to RESET your BIOS to default using the onboard jumpers?

Lenovo G570Model 4334 Hi Whenever i switch on my laptop it stays on the Lenovo start up screen for about 30 seconds, and then powers off. During the 30 seconds the laptop fans runs louder than usual but nothing else happens. Ocassionally it does get past that stage but then takes a long time on the 'starting windows' screen. I've used the onekey recovery to return it to my backup and even returned it to the factory settings but the problem persists. I'm unsure of what to next and how the problem can be solved. Any Suggestions? Thanks.

( f8 )if it works, press f8 again to load "last known good configuration"otherwise, check your ram sticks ( remove/replace/swap ) and check if your hdd is working properly.do you have any heating issue by the way? did you make changes recently?

My other half has a Lenovo H50 tower which only shows a blank black screen. It wouldn't boot past the Lenovo logo a few days ago. Tried the Windows Troubleshoot options, all without success. Tried OneKey Recovery, supposedly successful. Still wouldn't boot past the Lenovo logo. In between the troubleshoot options and OneKey, I also tried a live USB (Ubuntu), because of course there wasn't a recovery DVD and I was still hoping to retrieve some files. GNU Grub couldn't find the EFI file on the Lenovo but was fine on all other computers we tried. Blamed it on Linux and ordered Windows 7. Inserted DVD, computer wouldn't boot from DVD (selected from boot menu). Fine, changed the boot order to DVD first. Now I don't even see the Lenovo logo, it is just a black screen. I cannot get into the BIOS, which means I am not sure what my options are from here on. The H50 is only 15 months old, so if it is the hard drive, I'd be very disappointed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi guys,My Laptop configuration: HW: Lenovo y560 with ATI Radeon HD 5730 (no Intel graphic card on the board) Intel Core i7-740QM, 1.73 GHz with 2.93 GHz max turbo, 4 cores, 8 threads, 6M cache OS: Windows 7 64x with latest updates. Video driver: ATI driver version: 8.752.0.0 Issue: The screen turns completely blank every time when I turn on my laptop and the windows logo disappears. The login window doesn't appear at all and there is no response. Besides, it?s not possible to reboot a laptop by using Ctrl-Alt-Del on this stage and only power button helps. However everything works fine in safe mode. Workaround that works:Start my laptop into safe mode.Reboot a laptop into standard mode without any changes. As a result, everything works fine untill I turn off my Lenovo. What has been tried in order to solve the issue with no success:- installed the latest drivers of ATI Radeon and beta crimson drives;- changed power options to minimize performance;- edited registry's values (enableULPS, EnableBrightnessInterface2);- updated the bios to the latest version. I have been really tired up to find a solution of this awful problem for three weeks. Please help.

Hello everyone,Last week's Wednesday I used my Lenovo G40-80 to do my college homework at the afternoon. It went all normally, I turned off the notebook and get to my college. At night, when I returned, I tried to turn on the notebook and was given the error when the system don't booted and both the led aside the camera and the fan turned on for almost two seconds and then turned off. After many attempts, and seeing some topics here, I tried to turn on my Lenovo using the recovery button. It worked, the system booted up normally. Problem is that the system gave video, but the screen itself is black. For example: if I was an spectator, sawing my computer from far,I can clearly assume that the screen is off. But if I get closer in /or turns on a telephone flash closer to the screen, I could clearly see the Lenovo logo on boot up, the Windows 10 login screen... I mean, the normal video elements.I am very anxious about the possibility of being a software problem, giving the fact that the F9 key has a feature similar to the problem i'm suffering and also the fact that if I connect my laptop into a TV or another screen via HDMI/Vga cables, video is showed nornally.I've done a video showing my problem and uploaded it on YouTube, here's the link:https://youtu.be/deGQw-88x68 Please, do someone has any answers to this problem? I have urgency to return using my computer, in order to continue to do my homeworks. Thanks in advance.

I recently got a Lenovo Y50 a couple months ago. I've been taking very good care of it, checking for viruses nearly every day and cleaning out everything daily as well, because I need this one to last because it will be my PC for college. But yesterday I booted her up and it showed the lenovo logo, then nothing. Black screen. No cursor or anything on the screen. Keyboard LEDs are on and caps lock and things can turn on and off. I've tried to restart multiple times, restored the system to 4 days ago, taking it off the charger and putting it on, I just don't know what's wrong. I don't know if safe mode will help but I have no idea how to get there on windows 8 anyways. Please and thank you )-:

Today, my new Lenovo P52 arrived. It started like a charm, but I want to use Linux, so I enteredBIOS configuration via F1 key during boot and switched off EFI. The USB stick appeared in the bootmenu called up via F12, but Linux failed to load from it. Again, I entered BIOS config and changedthinks. After saving, the reset would end with a black screen, the LEDs in the Esc and F1 keys lighted. Turning off (pressing the power button) and on again: No splash screen, nothing displayed on the screen. A BIOS setting seems to cause the notebook to fail booting, even to fail showing up the splash screen andsuggesting to press some special key. Any way to return to a working BIOS configuration and unbrick the new P52? Kind regards, Ernst
