Q: Sorry Posted In Wrong Place~

[COLOR=blue] I posted this in the wrong place earlier, am sooo sorry, I didnt realize there was a forum just for this..I apologize. Any help would be most appreciated! TamCOLOR=blue] Hi..I was wondering if anyone can help me...my son was on my system the other night and since I have been having nothing but pop-up problems and actually problems running certain programs. I tried to do a restore that didnt help, I even tried to boot from my original XP Cd and start all over, but found that I had an SP2 error, which in going to uninstall that, I got another area pertaining to languages etc... I ran hijack this and here is my report, if anyone knows of anything I can do, I would greatly greatly appreciate it, as these pop-ups are driving me nuts, because just popping up they seem to even download themselves. Thanks again!Tam! I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Please run two online virus scans:http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspxhttp://housecall.antivirus.com/Then let us know if its working better and what the scans found.

We have a possible issue and it could be very serious.

There is a new trojan, and it carries an IRC bot. Apparently these bots are gathering for a massive attack on the world's major DNS servers. Last count is over 300,000 bots with more coming.

FBI has been made aware of this and is taking this possibility very seriously.

Please be aware and let other admins/mods/security people know.

FBI's website is currently under attack.

A:Help Needed, lol posted in the wrond place before

Have you tried to do a System Restore?Start the computer and then press the F8 key when Windows begins to start. The Windows Advanced Options menu appears.Use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.If a boot menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER. Windows XP restores the computer to the most recent restore point. When this opens make sure that "Restore my computer to an earlier time" is chosen, and click on Next>.The dates appearing in bold are the dates that you can restore to, click on the date that you want and then click Next> to start the System Restore. This may take a long time to complete, and when it is done it will restart your computer. When the computer restarts and you have logged on as the administrator a Restoration Complete page will appear, click on OK to complete the process.

i guess i'm newer than i thought i was......a friend gave me a new monitor that is larger than my old one....so i have a lot of black screen ......wish i could fix this...if someone could help or redirect me, i would appreciate it....thank you

A:may be in the wrong place

The monitor you have now, as the old monitor you had, should have some buttons or knobs on the front of it. These are used to resize the image, adjust it's position etc. Try them out looking for the obvious such as a knob with an image that looks like it will stretch it etc. Also, you might want to adjust your settings to a different resolution. For example: 800X600, 1024X768 etc. To do that, just right click on an empty space on your desktop, select PROPERTIES, then left click on SETTINGS, then move the slider under SCREEN AREA. Hope this helps, T.

A:New Motherboard (Sorry if in wrong place)

Whats you're goal in replacing the motherboard?

Since you have an older system you would need to upgrade nearly everything if you are looking to get a more modern system. Selling you exisitng system and buying/building a new one would be the smart move.

Hi, has anyone ever experienced this, in Win XP?

I'll try to explain the best I can... my father (on his computer), was playing around with his taskbar putting it on the sides to see if he'd like there, I guess...

Now he's got repeats of his icons from the desktop sitting on his taskbar, fullsize. We tried to delete them, but if we did, they would also delete the twin that's on the desktop. I found this too be so weird, his taskbar is now about an inch and a quarter high, and we could not reduce it.

Has anyone ever seen such a glitch?

I don't think a restore would do anything, it being icons...

Okay, I've checked everything I know how to, but cannot figure this out- I'm only putting this here because what I'm hearing comes from the sub of my Logitech z-5500d setup.

Often, when I plug in a USB cable, or touch anything metal to my case, I hear a "click" out of the woofer. I also hear it when I switch speeds on my ceiling fan.
Or when the washing machine switches from wash to spin. (The fan only does it switching from "hi" to "medium," not from med to slow.

Multimeter shows no faults anywhere on/in the case. Any electricians out there?

A:What the ??? Short? Wrong place?

I had a subwoofer on my home stereo once that would pick up CB radio jibberish from time to time. When the AC would kick on in the house in the summer I would hear a pop from the sub, etc. etc......turns out the AC plug in the wall was not grounded. At least that is what fixed my problem...

Could anyone tell me the best utility for fixing the registry/broken links/shortcuts etc in XP Home. My computer has become quite slow and I think I may have a lot of rubbish cluttering up the system.I do tend to trial a lot of progs and then uninstall them.

A:This question may be in the wrong place

Personally I would not 'fix' anything in the Registry. Yes there may be a few broken links but they will be taking up minimal space and will probably not cause your system to slow down that you would notice.. Better to defrag your hard disc and run something like Cleanup! to clear out your temp files etc.

if the mods would kindly move this post into the correct forum, as i'm unable to post there myself!!

up until today my pc has been working fine, but i have had a few virii detected by AVG that it said it had healed. now i cant browse any web pages to do with virii or anything remotely linked to it as my web browser closes down totally, this is if i use IE, firefox or opera, for instance i cant open the hijack this log forum as my window just shuts down!!

if i try open AVG it gets as far as the grisoft opening page then shuts down before i can do anything, same with system restore, if i click that it tells me it has been switched off through group policy and to contact administrator, for which i have administrator rights on this pc.

i can open every window from control panel, except administrative tools, if i try it just shuts the window down totally, this even happens if i boot up into safe mode, nothing that i know of will help, but then i'm not a pc whizz-kid!!

please help me, i have posted a hijack this log, hopefully someone can stop me throwing my pc out the window in frustration!!

A friend has just created a new subdomain of his existing site. If I go to http://www.newsubdomain.existingsite.com, I see the host's generic "new site will be available soon" message. BUT if I go to http://newsubdomain.existingsite.com (that is, the same address, but without the leading "www."), I wind up on the site for some perfectly innocent-looking automotive specialty parts distribution company. (It looks like they mostly sell to retailers, not the public, so it makes no sense at all for them to be complicit in this apparent hijacking, although someone could have put something malicious on their site, I guess.)My computer is a laptop running WinXP Pro. AVG, spybot and Ad-aware scans find nothing amiss. The machine has no other symptoms of any kind of infection, afaict. The problem shows up regardless of whether I use Firefox or IE, but another machine on my home-network does NOT have this problem, so I know it's not a case of my ISP's DNS cache having been poisoned. I did run ipconfig /flushdns from a command prompt; that didn't fix it.Could this just be some simple corrupted record somewhere, or must we conclude a malware infection?TIA!!!

I got broadband last week and we're only allowed 2GB monthly usage limit (hehe, well it is cheap). I was wondering if streaming videos counts towards this, like does it take up disk space? And is there any chance of viruses? Thanks, pretty random, but I'd like to know.

A:ok this is probably the wrong place, but...youtube

Hi...

Yes that will count towards your 2GB monthly allowance...everything you get from the internet will count (emails, webpages, videos, music etc).

It does take up disk space but once you clear your temporary internet files, that will solve the problem.

As with the risks of internet use, there is a chance of picking up spyware/viruses by downloading content....but the chances are far less with reputable sites.

Hope that helps :)

I have WINDOWS XP, and can't figure out what other topic this question might belong in...

I don't know when or how it happened, but two file folders MY SHARED DOCUMENTS and CARRIE'S DOCUMENTS are now in MY COMPUTER.

MY COMPUTER, where it shows the drives. I am pretty sure it never had yellow folders in it before.

I think they should be in C DRIVE? There is a MY DOCUMENTS in C Drive, but it has nothing in it. I'm the only one who uses this computer, but apparenty everything saved goes into CARRIE'S DOCUMENTS. SHARED DOCUMENTS has various folders in it that I suppose would be shared by all, if others used the computer, too.

I've tried dragging them there (or anywhere) but only shortcuts appear in the new area. The folders still say in MY COMPUTER. They won't copy and paste.

When I open something, like in WORD, etc. I can still find them, just they are under MY COMPUTER.

So, they still work, it just seems strange, like they shouldn't be in MY COMPUTER. Unless I have totally missed this for the past year, I don't remember ever seeing them in there before. I take pictures off my memory card with a removable drive, which shows up as F drive, so I look in MY COMPUTER to click on this, all the time.

What happened and how can I fix it? Actually, since it seems to work this way, the only reason to fix it seems to be it looks odd this way.

Found original problem. Was BHO in registry.

However, it is STILL happeneing.

Strange things are popping up and disappearing also. GRRRRRR...

Can Someone look at this registry and see what may be the cause?

THX in advance!

For some time now I have had no sound. I think I might have plugged the sound connector into the wrong hole. On the back of my Dell Dimension #2350 PC are 3 holes (one pink, one light blue and one real dark blue). I currently have it plugged into the pink hole & was wondering if I should try one of the other two.

Have I got it connected in the right hole now or would I hurt anything by moving it to one of the other two holes?

I am a beginner and would really appreciate any suggestions and/or help as I really miss the sound, especially on e-mail cards I receive.

A:Have I Got Sound Connected In Wrong Place?

It would not hurt the computer or your speakers to plug it into the other holes.

Make sure your speakers are plugged into the wall (if they are that type of speaker), make sure they are turned on! And turned up! Put in some music, play it, and then plug the speakers into the different ports and see if they work.

If they still don't, let us know and one of us can walk you through it!

I can't say without seeing the release notes on the bios update, Generally they will only fix one problem at a time. Often it's compatibility for hardware that you may not even have. Meaning you will be unaffected by the update at all.

I'm trying to copy the complete "Documents" directory. Previously, this was called "My documents" and contained for example "My pictures". Now it doesn't, and I like that, but robocopy don't. Somehow it still searches for these directories, and of course can't find them. Seems robocopy needs a fix, or am I missing out on something here?

A:Robocopy looking for my directories in the wrong place

When I use robocopy, I use it in a text based batch file. So, as long as your paths are correct in the batch file it should go exactly where you tell it to. I haven't noticed any issues doing it this way with Windows 7.

I guess now that I think about this more...it's more a software, O/S issue than hardware...

A Gateway Laptop NV78 (Core Duo, 320GB Drive, 4Gb DDR)
It's running Win 7 Home.

After the last windows update, the trend micro put up warning screen that said only "an infected file on Drive C is causing a problem" or words to that effect.

It never identified the file by name (which is Odd because in the almost 10 years I've been using TM, I've never seen that happen)

I tried to roll back to the restore point Windows Update set before installing the latest update and that's when the wheels fell off.

Next start up...wouldn't accept the password. Or it would...or it wouldn't.
Half the desktop disappeared. (The Icons were gone)
It was becoming extremely unstable.
It was intermittently shutting down.

Stupid me...I ran the recovery system that's on the Windows install disk and now the computer is essentially, if you attach a rope to it, a boat anchor.

When I ran the "recover startup" option from the menu...it did it's thing and when it finished, it shut down, did a restart, and it appeared that it was going to work. I got a message on the screen that said "Windows is starting services", which sat there for about two minutes, then the message said "setup will continue after restart"...which became an endless loop

Clearly I want to replace the O/S but before doing that...Is there a program out there that I can load onto an ex... Read more

SOLVED:

Problem Solved.
I downloaded a freeware Linux program called UBUNTU.
Burn it to a DVD (NOT a CD as it says on their website).
Boot from the DVD drive on the lap top...run the program.
Mount the internal (C) drive
Plug in external drive or thumb if you have space on it
Then mount the external...

Copy from C/Paste to external...done.

Now I can reinstall Windows...

Hi, I tried using I tunes as i normally do and i got an error saying: "Missing files. Please re-install to fix this" <-- or similar to that

I tried uninstalling it and download a new one.
When i uninstall it, at the endd of the installation i recieve a "Software has encountered a problem and needs to be closed <report> <Do Not Report>"
BUT it does uninstall and i need to restart.

I restarted and made sure i deleted my folder in c/iTunes <intallation directory>

After that i downloaded a FRESH .exe from apple and re intalled it.
After installation is done, i get the same error:
"Software has encountered a problem and needs to be closed <report> <Do Not Report>" everytime i try to run the program now.
(No more missing items problems now...)

I tried running adaware and hijackthis. and these are my log files:

Note: Ive uninstalled and installed alot of times already and i cant see to find the answer to fix it.
Note2: all of adaware infected files were deleted and i rebooted aftewards. and re-scanned and rebooted.

A:Sorry i posted in wrong area - ITunes help

Your log is clean...

1. Don't post logs from other programs unless asked for
2. Don't wrap your posts in code or quotes.

The Adware log you posted means absolutely nothing...as that's just listing the MRU list (Most Recently Used)

Your issue sounds related to a problem with Itunes and not malware. Let's run a scan to be sure...

Please run an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm
Make sure you click the ?Free Online Virus Scan? in the upper right hand corner of the page under the Free use Activescan header. We do NOT want the default spyXposer scan.
Once it has finished save the activescan log. Then post that log in your next post.

Hi I have a x250 where the mouse courser sometimes drift because of the trackpoint. This is irritating in it self, but what is more irritating is that trackpoint seems to disable the trackpad when it is active/drifting. this means that gestures like two finger scrool does not work as long as the trackpoint is drifting. My old thinkpad did not disable the trackpad when it was drifting. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Best regardsBrian

Dear all gurus and staffs,When I run HijackThis, this came out:It has something to with the windows host files. I suspect that my pc has infected with a virus/malware as previously I installed some games (so silly of me) in which after rebooting, my mcafee antivrus is disabled. When I enabled it, it changes back to the disabled condition in matter of seconds. But surprisingly, after a few reboots, the Mcafee antivirus turns back to normal. However, the popup still comes out whenever I run HJT.So I quit the scan and instead, downloaded and installed MalwareBytes' Anti Malware and removed a few infected files and registries.MalwareBytes' Removal Log:Registry Keys Infected:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\209K1I9HN8 (Trojan.FakeAlert) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\XBV6RD5SZF (Trojan.FakeAlert) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\XML (Trojan.FakeAlert) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.Files Infected:c:\Users\xiandagreat\AppData\Roaming\avdrn.dat (Malware.Trace) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.I also used Spybot Search and Destroy but there are no suspected files. After that, as requested in the preparation guide, I have downloaded and used the DDS Tool. Here are the logs:DDS (Ver_10-11-27.01) - NTFS_AMD64 Run by xiandagreat at 16:59:16.05 on 03/12/2010Internet Explorer: 8.0.7600.16385 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_22Microsoft Windows 7...
