A lot of Windows Services not responding after Auto-Update...Windows 7

Q: A lot of Windows Services not responding after Auto-Update...Windows 7

Hi Guys,
Windows 7 auto-updated last night, and left me with a big mess today.
A lot of windows services are not responding at all, will not open, some freeze ect...
It all started with windows getting stuck at the blue screen, something along the lines of preparing windows ect, do not shut down. It kept looping on restart.
I got it to finally get to windows but..
Windows Update (does not open at all)
System Restore Opens *but* I apparently do not have any restore points
Safe Mode with Network boots to a black screen (safe mode in all 4 corners though)
Microsoft excel does not open
Cannot uninstall Microsoft starter 2010
I deleted all files under c>windows>softwaredistribution>download
I downloaded the service pack 1 manually from Microsoft website, the .exe file will not run at all.
So there it is, I can browse the internet but most windows services do not run.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: A lot of Windows Services not responding after Auto-Update...Windows 7

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: A lot of Windows Services not responding after Auto-Update...Windows 7

Download Windows 7 Services Repair to your desktop.
Important that this tool is on Desktop!
Right Click Run as Administrator.
Type 2 into the CMD window, hit enter.
Allow it to complete.
Then type 3 into the Command window, hit enter.
Allow that to complete as well.
Then reboot your machine.

I have a Windows 7 Home premium x64 OS and it has been giving me more and more problems. I've ran virus scan on AVG and Windows security and came up with NOTHING. I've tried msconfig and disabling all non-windows services from starting and still nothing has helped! Windows Live ID Sign in use to start after i had to manually start it (even though it was set for automatic), and now it won't even start at all, giving me the error it didn't respond in a timely fashion. My windows task manager doesn't respond, and my system restore gives me an error saying "A volume shadow copy service component encountered an unexpected error". The problem seemed to start when my web browser would start to not load pages. Then my printer wouldn't work because the "printer spool" service wouldn't start, then of course the hardware and devices in the control panel wouldn't load. After resolving that by manually starting the bluetooth service, the Task Manager stopped working, and the "printer spool" service failed and would not stay started. My start up speed has seemed to have hit a brick wall as well, I've ran start-up repair to no avail. This is my build as copied from newegg.com:

Hi All,

I recently upgraded to Windows 10, and I've run into a few different issues. I've been able to solve most of them thanks to searching around online, but none of the suggestions have helped to get my audio working. I'm running into an error of "Audio Services Not Responding", and the speaker in the toolbar has a red-x. When I open up the playback devices, it says "No audio devices are installed."

I have a Nvidia Geforce GTX 970. I've confirmed that the Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder are both running without problem. I've tried uninstalling/deleting the drivers, and restarting the computer. I've also tried installing the NVIDIA Windows 10 Compatible version of the drivers (364.51). Nothing seems to be working, and I was hoping you all might be able to help! Let me know what additional information is needed, and I've attached some screenshots of what I'm seeing. Any help is greatly appreciated, and thank you!

My computer was unable to upgrade to windows 7. I am using a compaq presario notebook PC. The boot device ( CD ) does not work, the system recovery does not work and there is no "repair my computer" on the F8 option. I tried safe mode and it does the same thing as start windows normally. It will say Setup is starting services and after 10 seconds it will auto restart.

Also, is there a way to load the windows.old files?

A:Unable to upgrade windows 7, starting services auto-restart

You can install Windows 7 from a flash drive if your computer supports it. If not, why not replace the optical drive so you have one that works?

If you do not have a Windows 7 installation DVD, you can download a legal copy with SP1 integrated from here: Official Windows 7 SP1 ISO from Digital River.
Make sure you get the same version you have, Home Premium, Pro or Ultimate and 32 or 64 bit. Note that Basic or Starter is not available.

You can now use the downloaded .iso file to create a bootable flash drive using Universal USB Installer ? Easy as 1 2 3.

Simply start it, select Windows 7 from the drop down menu, point to the downloaded .iso and your flash drive, and your off.

I have been having problems with simple functions in Excel, Word, PPT, (Office 2007 Enterprise) causing the applications to go into "Program Not Responding" mode. Some (such as attempting to bold a word or number) come back in a few minutes, others (such as 'save as - pdf') never come back.

Running a repair from the Office installation CD fixes these problems, until the next Update runs. For awhile, I was repairing Office daily. Now I've gone to doing updates manually every few weeks and then repairing Office.

I ran an update this morning and aftewards tried Office just to see if the problem of "Program Not Responding" had returned. It had - so - I ran repair again from the Office CD and it is gone.

Would love to get to the root of this problem and be able to have Auto Updates run and not have to keep running the repair.

2 Mar 2010 - I'm thinking my problem may really be VPN based. Today, rather than connect to VPN immediately (I'm in a home office connecting to the company network), I tried working with my Office apps, accessing the mapped drives and shared printer from my home system and everything worked fine. I then started VPN and things seem to be continuing to work fine.

I'd seen other comments about this issue having to do with accessing mapped/shared resources, so, I wonder if by starting VPN immediately, it has trouble with the connection to resources on my local network, whereas, if those have already been exercised... Read more

This was a nasty virus. I would attempt to run windows update but it would give me an error code and told me to check my connection. Norton would not update. Most free AV I could download but not update. When I would do any search on Google or MSN, it would redirect. It would also give me a google page does not exist if I went to a windows download update sit. After 2 days of working on this issue and using every AV I could find, I stumbled across a google group addressing this problem. It said to access this website, http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Trojan-Remover.shtml This trojan was nasty but the program took about 5 minutes and cleared it. I didn't even have to go into safe mode. If your having this same issue, give this a shot before reinstalling anything, Hope it helps.

I reinstalled Vista, everything was working fine, apart from the fact that there was a virus on my computer which i had to get rid of.

Now, the problem is that whenever i try to open up a file, a blue screen comes up and my computer crashes. I looked for a solution from windows and it appeared that because my NVIDIA hasn't been 'installed correctly' or has 'expired' is causing my computer to crash. Hello all, let me start from the beginning.
I was attempting to install a game that required an install of Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. For some reason this would not install properly. After searching about for a while I found a few people saying that downloading the latest Windows update was necessary.
"Oh great, a fix!" I thought, but to my dismay, every time I attempted to update I was presented with the following error message.

"Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."
I tried restarting a few time to no avail. I tried switching to never update, restarting, and switching back to auto update. Didn't work. I thenk looked into my services.msc to see if it was stopped, but I can't even find it in the list. I know for a fact
where it SHOULD be, I'm not overlooking it, it's just not there. I'll attach a screen cap to show you.
I need some help here. I've tried the Microsoft fix it tool that many people have suggested also with no luck. I'm not exactly a computer expert, so replies in as-close-to-layman terms as you can would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

Hi Mike,

I suggest you perform a
system restore to check the result.

If the issue persists, you can also try the following:

1. Try to take the step 5 in this KB to Register Windows Update engine files.
2. Use
System File Checker tool to scan the system.
3. Startup Repair from the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)

For detail steps:

1). Insert the Windows 7 installation disc into the disc drive, and then start the computer.
2). Press a key when the message indicating "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD ?". appears.
3). Select a language, a time and currency, and a keyboard or input method, and then click Next.
4). Click Repair your computer.
5). In the System Recovery Options dialog box, choose the drive of your Windows installation and click Next.
6). At the System Recovery Options Dialog Box, click on Repair your computer.
7). Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
8). In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Startup Repair.

Hope this helps

I own an Acer Aspire One D255. It is a netbook. It is not a very reliable machine based on its performance, so after doing some oogling and googling, I found several websites that recommended I disable certain services to improve the PC speed. After having done so, the operating system reported that it is not a genuine copy of windows 7 starter. That is impossible since i factory reset this machine about three times already. I was wondering if anyone can help me figure out exactly what services need to be toggled. I would seriously appreciate any help. Thank you.

I could not find this topic anywhere on these forums, so here's my question: I use Desktop Maestro from PCTools to clean my registry, clean out temp folders, etc. This program also allows you to "tune" Windows services. Now I read somewhere that Windows Update doesn't download all available updates if you do not have all the default services running. Is this true?

Thanks in advance.

The SFC scan was clear - but there's not enough background data there for us to be able to diagnose anything...

Please download the Farbar Service Scanner from

Right-click on the saved file and select 'Run as Administrator', and tick all the options, then click on the Scan button - copy and paste the report to your response.
Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply.

Hi all

after finding and removing malicious files with malwarebytes in a regular user account, I noticed windows update was not working (not installed please reboot error) so I checked services.msc to see if windows update needed restarting. but it was not there.

IN both the admin account and another regular user account on the same machine windows update works fine and is present in services.msc

any ideas on how to restore windows update and get it working in the affected user account?

A:windows update not in services.msc regular user

Hi crook,
Windows Update service is not related to different users, but is rather a system-wide process.
If Windows Update shows properly in an Admin account, then it's working.
Limited accounts do not display that service, for security reasons.

Hey, I've been using the beta for a while and have been working under the assumption that winupdate was running in the background doing its thing, however now upon launching windows update I get the red cross shield and 'check for updates' button, which upon clicking gives an error message"'windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. Do you have the following registry key info below? It is very likely that your computer/network is infected with a variant of the Conficker virus. One of it's first attack actions is to cripple the Windows Update service to prevent itself being removed by thngs like Windows Defender or the Maliscious Software Removal Tool. Even though Win7 does not have any vulnerabilities conficker can attack, it also attacks accounts with weak or blank passwords.Review: http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/SearchResults.aspx?query=confickerDownload and run MSRT - http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/families.mspx==========

Hey guys, so I've been desperately trying to solve this problem for a while and no luck yet. Windows Update is just refusing to work on my XP, but I guess the problem is quite complicated since I couldn't find a solution yet.
- There are technically 6 updates that won't install with Windows Update Agent, but it won't even show others. They download alright, but they just won't install.
- Alternatively I tried using the update site of microsoft, seems like I can install other updates that way, not these ones though.
- The problem doesn't seem to be in any connection with these updates, because the wuauserv is also missing from the services.msc list. I have it in the registry though.
- I tried re-registrating and re-installing practically everything connected to windows update, but I just can't get it working.
- Scanned the computer with avast, both normally and in boot-time, found nothing.
I have actually no idea what should I do next, or where to look for the source of this problem.
I would really appreciate any help :)) Thanks :))

First time post but I am hoping that I can get this fixed. I have been experiencing a ton of issues with my laptop. I am running Windows Vista Ultimate on a Fujitsu S7110 with and Intel Core2 T7200 Processor, 2Gb Ram.

I was told to download some hotfix for Vista and install it and since then I get zero internet, Kaspersky fails to load a bunch of components and it generally runs like crap.
When I mouse over the wireless connection icon it tells me that "Connection Unknown The dependency service or group failed to start"

It freezes and soes all kinds of weird things. I have looked at teh services to try to start ones that are turned off like the DCOM service but they just hang at "Starting" and never work. It seems to work a little better when Kaspersky is closed but still no network services.

I just got my laptop from service (they replaced a new hard drive and installed windows 7). It is a Sony Vaio ....i own it now but it's a slightly used rent-to-own type of deal so no windows dvd or system restore or anything.

They supposedly restored my computer to factory setting but I can't update my computer.

The bar to the left is red and i see a red shield with a white x and it says most recent checks for updates: never

updates were installed: never

i go to installed programs and nothing has been installed since early 2010.

It's like whenever i try to click check for updates button it's like something is blocking it from connecting and scanning is the best way I can explain it. I desperately need help to update all my software and security patches etc
I found something online where it says to type services.msc and stop it and go to c/windows/softwaredistribution and delete the files and then start the service so then ....
windows updates still won't scan (windows 7)....says service is not running but it is.

Windows Update can't run becasue the services aren't running

Windows Defender gives the following error:
"service has stopped" and when you click "start now", it times out and gives another error. i read online that defender is needed to start, for update to work, that's why i tried this.

When I tried to install Service Pack 1, it gave me "catastrophic error" 0x8000FFFFF, which seems to mean I'm in deep bleep, judging from a quick search result

As mentioned in my topic title, I've done a SMART scan and my HD is a-okay. This is my second, clean reinstall of Windows 7. I've scanned for malware and viruses with several scanners -- clean. CBS log part 2

In Services Windows Update does not show 'started'? Left click to Highlight it, right click to open it.
Does it say stop or start? If wupdate showed started this would show stop and vice versa.
I'd do a system restore to some earlier date when it may have been working.

When 7 windows starts on my computer, it runs an auto update.  When it fails, it reverts.  The restarts Windows.  Performing this loop endlessly, Windows never reaches the login screen.  I have run the diagnostics that come with windows.
The extended memory test found no errors.  The startup test found no errors, but ended with the statement, "Unspecified changes to system config might have caused the problem."  Then it goes on to state Repair action: system files
integrity check and repair error code 0xa.  Time 7036ms, but seemed to run much longer than that.
Is there a bootable application that would allow a Windows tech to remote access my machine?
The other thing that I observed before Windows reached this stage is that Windows thinks that it is not genuine.  My daughter had purchased the Windows 7 upgrade from Vista when she was attending college.  Windows 7 has been running on the machine
for about 7 years and passed the genuine test several times during this time.  I have the installation disk and product keys.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as the computer is no longer usable.

I have Win XP 2002 SP2 installed on my Dell Inspiron laptop. I have enabled the automatic update feature to receive and install patches/updates from Microsoft.

When I get to the 'Install Updates' page, my computer always fails at installing the updates.

Any ideas as to why my computer won't receive/install the required critical updates?

Also...I utilize Microsoft Outlook (not Outlook Express). Outlook Express allowed one to 'switch identities.' I have found no such option in Outlook. My wife and I have separate e-mail accounts under the same ISP, and Outlook has to be shut down and restarted to change over to her account.

Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance.

1.  Windows 10 upgrade completed and computer worked OK until it ran automatic updates.
2.  Now system tries auto repair at startup, cannot repair, then gives option to troubleshoot.
3.  System restore not an option.
4.  Go Back to previous build will not work.
5.  Reset of PC will not work.
Assume I will need to reinstall to factory default, but first need to copy user files.
1.  When going to command prompt, users, I only see public user so I don't see user documents to copy.
Right now main problem is to save user files and then reimage.
Does anyone have ideas of how best to copy user files so that I can move on with factory recovery.

A:Windows 10 cannot auto repair after update

Download Fatdog64. Burn the iso to disk by right clicking on a Windows 7 and later computer and selecting burn disk image. You can use Rufus with the iso to create a bootable USB flash drive. Backup any data on the flash drive first. Depending on your computer, attach the flash drive and tap the key to bring up the boot menu and select the flash drive or DVD drive.
At the Fatdog64 desktop you will see your hard drive partitions in the lower left labeled sda1..sda2..etc. Clicking once on the sdaX icon will open a File Manager. If you do not see your Windows files close out the window and select another sdaX partition. For Windows 10 the partition may be sda3.
Once you have selected the correct partition attach a USB flash or external drive to the computer. A USB icon will appear next your DVD drive if you have one. Click once on it to mount and open another File Manager Window. Drag and move both windows until they are side by side. You can resize the windows by left clicking and dragging a corner.
Highlight the files/folders you wish to copy by holding the Ctrl key + left clicking. You can also Left Click and Window around the files/folders. Once you have highlighted your files/folders drag them from the HDD Window to the USB external Window. A small dialog window will open. Select Copy and check the Quiet box.
Edit: you only need to click once to open any folder.

As we all know, Windows interrupts a shutdown, usually at the end of a day, to start downloading an update. I want to be able to delay this to give me time to create a Restore Point, in case the update messes up my machine (it does happen). Before I had Windows 7 clean reinstalled I had this set up so I know it can be done. (There are help files about delaying the automatic restart after an update but that is not what I want.)

So how can I delay the actual update please?

A:How to delay Windows auto update

The best way surely is not to have it set to automatic update at all, but to set it so you choose when to download and install. You then have as much or as little control as you want, and whether you install the updates altogether or in batches the process will automatically involve creating a system restore point before the installation starts. To change the settings go to System Security in the Control Panel.

Hey mates,

This is a very "beginner"question. I'm somewhat familiar with windows (not as much as I thought or wanted to be) , but basically the problem is this. Windows shuts down on a regular basis in the middle of work, quitting every program, reboots, and isntalls updates. I am pretty sure this is related ot the "action center" and whatnot, but how do I control that so that it
asks if it wants to restart (in the past, it asked to postpone 10 min, 4 hours etc) now it doesnt' seem to be doing that.
where I set how frequently it does that.

A:Windows 7 Auto-update (controlling it)

I use a vitualization type software called Toolwiz Time Freeze that on a restart removes all your downloads etc of the session.
It gets abit annoying when a Windows auto update starts downloading/installing when you know that TTF will be removing the update on the restart (that is also needed to install Windows updates).

Any advice on how i can get windows to tell me what important updates i need, WHILST having the option of when i can download and install them?

Many thanks for any help.

A:Turn off Windows Auto Update

See this tutorial by Brink:

I have mine set to "Check for updates...", and that works for me.
I get notified, but it's up to me, if and when to download and install them.
