Adding an SSD to a T540 Thinkpad

Q: Adding an SSD to a T540 Thinkpad

I´m considering adding a Samsung 850 EVO 500 gb SSD to my T540 Thinkpad. I would do this by removing the dvd drive, and buying a harddrive caddy. Ideally, I would then transfer my OS (Win 10) to the SSD to speed up the system. Anyone have any experience doing this? Any issues I should be aware of?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Thinkpad T540 from work, and a private Ideapad 510. I'm looking for a wall charger solution that can be used for any of these laptops, which I could keep in my bag, regardless of which laptop I take with me. Both use 20V power. The Thinkpad charger produces 4.5A (90W), I think that power source should work fine with the Ideapad that requires just 3.25A (65W). Is there a solution to convert the Thinkpad's rectangular plug (slim tip) to the the very small power plug used by the Ideapad 510 (round, 4mm outer, 1.7mm inner) ? Alternatively, is there any universal charger available, which offers both plugs? Thanks,Kai

Hi, Just got my new P50 Thinkpad. It came with a M.2 2280 SSD drive that is SATA. I am looking to add a second M.2 SSD in the second bay. I would prefer this second one to be a NVMe if possible. Does it matter that one M.2 drive is going to be SATA whereas the second one is going to be NVMe or do both the M.2 drives need to be of the same type? I understand that with NVMe, I need to get the drivers for Win 7. I don't plan on doing raid or anything like that. I just want a second drive preferably the faster NVMe one if possible. I thought I read somewhere that both M.2 drives have to be the same type - either both being SATA or both being NVMe. Can I mix and match these?

A:Adding a second M.2 drive to my Thinkpad P50

They can be mixed and matched, won't cause any problems.

I've purchased probably close to a dozen ThinkPad's over the years, and I waited patiently to upgrade to the T540p.  I was glad to see that the trackpoint remained, it is one of my favorite things about ThinkPads. That said, I just can't get over the decision to not have seperate left/right mouse buttons on the touchpad.  I quite literally swear at it sometimes.   It is so incredibly frustrating to use without seperate buttons that I can only assume that Lenovo did not ask a single user what they thought of this change, and instead, created a touchpad-by-comittee. I use linux (Mint 16 on this laptop) and it took some tweaking to get the button areas right.  It's stil not great, and I've entirely turned of mouse movement with the touchpad because it's too sensitive (palm included, even with with palm detection turned on).  I don't want to hear that you "don't support linux" (frankly, I don't care, few companies do) -- that's not why I'm here.  I'm here because I thought you'd want to know that this is that last ThinkPad I'm going to buy, unless you bring back the independent mouse buttons.   So thanks, Lenovo, for years of making great products (up unti this year).  Hopefully you can resume making great products in the future.   But for now, you've lost a customer.

A:T540 Feedback

You're not alone.  The Trackpad is hideous.  One of the key reasons I'm holding on to my W530.  My 3840QM goes blow to blow with the 4900MQ so no need to downgrade to inferior hardware.

I have a ThinkPad Yoga 12.5-Inch Convertible 2 in 1 Touchscreen Ultrabook (20CD00B1US) running Windows 8.1 that came factory equipped with a 256 GB SATA SSD (Samsung 2.5" SATA III) and I need additional storage capacity (mainly for storing photos).  I initially intended to replace the original SSD with a larger SSD (specifically a Samsung 850 EVO 2.5" SATA III 1TB  SSD), but then discovered that my ThinkPad Yoga had provision for installing a M.2 drive.  Will the ThinkPad Yoga 12.5-Inch Convertible 2 in 1 Touchscreen Ultrabook (20CD00B1US) support two drives - that is, will I be able to access both the original SATA III SSD (as the boot drive) and the M.2 drive (as a data storage drive)?  If so, how will this secondary drive affect the computer's overall performance?  (I realize that power consumption will go up a bit with a second SSD, but since I use it on AC power most of the time, that's not an issue.)  (** I appologize for accidentally posting this to the Lenovo Android Tablets forum.  I'm new here and didn't realize I had entered the wrong sub-forum**) -Wes

However, when I do this, the screen is blanked just for a moment and then the Windows log-on splash screen appears. If I press the Fn button the desktop reappears, no need to log in again. But what I want is for the screen to stay blanked until I press a button. I don't want the Windows screen to appear unbidden. Is there a solution?

I am testing the new models of Thinkpad A485 units Model Type 20MV S00U00.OS installs just fine.I have the drivers for enterprise that were downloaded from the lenovo site, they installed just fine.I have a script that as part of the setup it installs around 38 wireless profiles and its the same script that we use in all our models. On this model is causing a BSOD pointing to the "rtwlane.sys" file.  after some research I have downloaded the latest driver from Realtek.  This did not help.I added a pause command on the script so that the script pauses after each individual profile is installed to see if its one particular profile causing the issue. Each time that I run the script, the BSOD happens at a different profile.

A blue screen error (also called a stop error) can occur if a problem causes your PC to shut down or restart unexpectedly. When you experience this type of error, you won?t be able to see things like the Start menu or the taskbar on the screen when your PC is turned on. Instead you might see a blue screen with a message that your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart.

For the 4th time, the T540 keyboard has about 7 of its keys stop working. The seven keys are usually on the right hand side and in a group, but could be in any row, and within 1 or 2 columns of each other. Pressing the key does nothing, not even the click in click mode. I am convinced this is not a software problem as I have tried all possible software remedies. I am sure it is due to the keyboard or connection itself. The Shift or Ctrl does not work for these keys either. First time this happened after a year of use, I lost 'P' and '0' among others, and I had to replace the keyboard. A year later on the new keyboard it happened again, but came back after two days. 3rd time was four months later, and I have lost '-', '=', '5', '6', delete, and others. I remapped these. Then again now I lost another bunch including '\', backspace, enter, and others. The original keyboard is a backlit keyboard FRU 04Y2387, ID# 48L16M, Parts # 0C44952, Model # KM BL-105US . Replacement keyboard also backlit and exact replacement. Short of replacing the keyboard, or resetting the keyboard connection and cleaning the contacts, (all tried) what is there to do? Is this a contact problem or keyboard problem? Has happened with two different keyboards. Is this a common problem? Any help will be of great assistance and will be greatly appreciated.

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

How do I fix this? The only time this happens is when I use it off the dock and then put it back on. If it stays on the dock all the time it does just fine. Any fixes for this? Thanks...

Apologies if this is reprising and earlier question on this topic. I have recently acquired an old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692] which has an empty 2½" bay.I need advice on the following issues:1    The X230 currently has an SSD installed [Samsung 128GB MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1] which will not be large enough for the programs and program data that I have planned to install.  I would like to upgrade to a 1 1TB SSD, and I propose to clone the contents of the existing 128 GB drive to a 1 TB Samsung 850 Evo [MZ-75E1T0B].  Are there any SATA or other firmware issues that I should be aware of before acquiring the 1 TB drive, arranging for its cloning and for the replacement of the current 128 GB drive?2    I would like to populate the empty 2½" bay on the UltraBase Series 3 docking station with an HDD, and the model I have in mind is a 2 TB Seagate BarraCuda Hard Drive [ST2000LM015].  Again, I'd like to know if there are any hardware, firmware or other issues before acquisition and installation.I'd be grateful for any help on either of these two issues in an Australian context.

I bought a used IBM Thinkpad T20 Thinkpad Type 2647-92U from eBay for use this semester on campus. It is in great shape and has a recent edition of Windows XP but an older version of MS Office which does not boot properly.

This computer was a part of a network and keeps trying to connect to it each time Windows loads. It came with a LinkSys Wireless-G Notebook Adapter 2.4 GHz 802.11g card.

The CD is an official copy; clean and has no scratches or nicks. The DVD/CD-ROM will boot other CD's such as music CD's and DVD films and data discs with MS Word files etc on them.

Any help would be appreciated!

A:Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 docking station does not charge Thinkpad P51 battery.

Everbody's p51 would be the same.  The thunderbolt port won't work as a charging port.  The thunderbolt specs specify 100w max.  That's not enough.  Your thunderbolt port is not for charging.  To charge via the dock, you need a workstation dock, not a thunderbolt dock.  A thinderbolt dock can charge things like an x1 carbon (5th gen) or x1 yoga (2nd gen)

Does the Thinkpad P51s support the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? I have the Thinkpad P51s with stock Windows 10 Pro and updated to latest drivers and Windows version and installed the latest Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock drivers. Attaching the Thunderbolt 3 Dock to the P51s as described in documentation, it charges the notebook, however, noting attached to the dock is recognized. I've tested with attaching USB flash drives, headphones, Ethernet, HDMI, and DP, but nothing is recognized nor are any warnings/errors displayed in Windows. While the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock is listed as being compatible with the P51s and T570, the notebook order page does not list the Thunderbolt 3 Dock in any of the accessories lists. Lenovo Sales also confirmed that the Thunderbolt 3 Dock is fully compatible with the P51s.  However, I needed to purchase the Thunderbolt 3 Dock separately from the notebook order. What's going on? Has anybody successfully used the P51s or the T570 with the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? Or is this something I need to wait for full support via a future BIOS/driver update? Or perhaps my Thunderbolt 3 Dock is defective? Thanks,Boris

There are several issues that came up when I upgraded to Windows 10. While it is a celebrated and supposedly eye pleasing application, it seems that they have chosen to disregard users and deleted certain preferences from a user's browser.  This makes
it practically impossible for the user to log into several accounts, since every single site requires different types of passwords, and in order for a person to be able to log on to the several accounts, a person would have to carry around a folder with about
100 different account names, user names, passwords, answers to who, what, or where, phone #s & other pertinent information to be able to log onto or recover a lost or forgotten password.I really do not like what Microsoft has done with the new browser.
It looks chick, but to me it's unworkable and a nuisance to use.  If the Cadillac is not broken, why fix it?

You might have damaged the power circuitry on the motherboard.  If that is the case, the only solution is to replace the board.  There is an array of power transistors that handles the switching back and forth between AC and battery.

I figured I must have been given a touchscreen version of the P50... but now I'm not so sure. S/N: 20EQS4RV00https://store.emprgroup.com.au/lenovo-877529-notebook-tp-p50-16g-512-w10p-20eqs4rv00-20eq-s4rv00.asp... Screen Part Number: 00NY503Walter FRU LCD ASM 15.6 FHD BOE with Mutto The monitor shows as a "MONITOR\LEN40BA" type in Windows Device Manager (i.e. Properties --> Details --> Property (Hardware IDs)). The screen doesn't respond to finger touches or stylus touches. Changed batteries in the pen for brand new ones. Not too sure if a specific driver is needed. I'm guessing I've been led astray here but wanted a second opinion... Thanks
