Video choppy, long time to reboot or shutdown, video driver stops working, invisible programs do not close properly

Q: Video choppy, long time to reboot or shutdown, video driver stops working, invisible programs do not close properly

I have experiencing problem with my Dell XPS 15z laptop. The video is choppy and sometimes display driver stops working. I am not even able to update windows and update fails during configuration. I did a dell PC diagnostics for any hardware issues but found none.

When I shutdown the PC I get an error programs need to be closed with an option of "Force ShutDown" but in the list of programs I don't see any programs. I have Kaspersky antivirus installed. Could it be a virus ?

Preferred Solution: Video choppy, long time to reboot or shutdown, video driver stops working, invisible programs do not close properly

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Video choppy, long time to reboot or shutdown, video driver stops working, invisible programs do not close properly

Try uninstalling the video driver via Device Manager...then rebooting and reinstalling same.

Exactly what are you doing...and what happens? Error messages? You access the Win Update website?

I was watching some live streams of basketball at firstrow1.eu last night (May 3rd).
Afterwards, my computer started to lag. It would take forever to open new pages in Chrome, explorer windows, or even the task manager. I rebooted and it could not load find my desktop profile. I rebooted once more and my desktop was back but everything was laggy again.
I tried running MalwareBytes but that didn't find anything. I also ran combofix. Sorry, I used it along time ago so I decided to give it a shot. I didn't remember the warning about not running it until I read through the forum instructions today.
Thanks for the help, you guys are great!

NOTE: I apologize for the length of this post, but I wanted to include as much detail as I could.

I'm getting choppy video on two different PCs. It's mild and slightly inconsistent, just a mild stuttering as if random frames are missing. I saw it initially with streaming video on an older Dell PC I set up with our main TV. It came through all pay and free channel sources, so I thought the problem was in the Dell, the internet connection, or both. Then I started seeting it on my newer PC, which is much more robust, so I looked to the internet first.

Our internet connection is fast, with speed tests reporting above 200 Mbps reliably, so that's not it, and internet is via ethernet cable for both, so it's not a wifi issue.

I checked both PCs thoroughly, testing the CPUs with Intel's diagnostic tool and watching CPU usage while video is running. I also updated the video driver on each machine. Everything checks out. I had already limited startup apps as much as possible, so that didn't seem to be an issue. Both have Avast free, and both have Windows Defender turned off.

I called TWC's tech support and allowed them to view my PC with their live feed, and when they saw the problem they ran some tests and came to the conclusion that the problem is in the modem, so they're sending a new one.

Unfortunately, since then I've watched some video that didn't come from an internet stream, and the chop is milder, but noticeable. This includes recordings made from the DVR with a stan... Read more

A:Choppy video, all sources, 2 different PCs (long post)

Nothing yet? Sorry, I don't mean to be a pest, but this is making me a little crazy. I've been scouring the web and I've found several threads in various places (including Microsoft) that speak to the problem, but none of the tips and tricks I've found so far has made the slightest difference. That includes changing audio playback settings, rolling back video and audio drivers, increasing the monitor refresh rate (it tops out at 60 Hz), and some other things I can't recall in the moment. I switched back to my 7 SSD (unaltered) on my main PC, and playback is choppy with that, too.

I'm not sure, but I think this started with the 1511 update. How that might have affected any 7 installation is beyond me, though.

This may help: I have PlayOn, which can record streams from various sites. I don't know whether or how much PlayOn uses the video and audio drivers when it's only recording (the program does not appear on screen), but there's some chop in the recording. I copied a few to my Galaxy Pro 8.4 and played them back with MX Player and the stock Samsung video player, and while the effect is not as dramatic as with Windows, it is noticeable. Videos I created previously play back smooth as silk on the tablet.

I uninstalled PlayOn to see if that had anything to do with the problem, and then rebooted. But online streams were still choppy.

After careful viewing, it seems to me that Netflix and Hulu streams run more smoothly than those of the various network and cable channels.

I went to the UFC's website and clicked on one of the video's they had embedded in their scrolling news on the home page. The screen went black and then came back, saying that the video driver had shutdown and recovered. I refreshed the page, assuming it was just a glitch. I clicked the same video to watch it and my computer seized up and I got a blue screen. I didn't have enough time to read everything on the blue screen, but I caught a little bit saying that Windows had encountered an error with the video driver and needed to shut down. The computer rebooted a bit sluggishly, but now appears to be fine. Any ideas as to whether this is a problem with my video card's driver or the video on the site? Videos elsewhere work fine.

First you can download Speccy to check the temprature of the display card, mainboard to see whether it's normal:
Then you can try to reinstall the driver of the display card or upgrade the driver.

Hello once again TSF! I have been helped a lot by you guys before! Lets see if you can help me again! :)

So, I hardly reboot/shutdown my computer, but i recently cleaned it up and removed some apps i no longer use. All went well.

However, when i went to restart my computer (to finalize uninstall) it got hung up on the "Windows is waiting for programs to close" and what do ya know the list was empty

So I sat and waited about 20 minutes, then i noticed i couldnt click anything and nothing responded but the mouse moving and the power button. HDD light was out too

So i held power button to force shut down, worked. Started up and asked if i wanted to boot to safe mode etc. I selected boot normally. It booted up just fine everything is still working but i can't shut down or restart AT ALL.

I even tried the command in CMD to see if i could get it to shutdown that way using

shutdown /f

and the same thing happened, it appeared to be shutting down then just hang there, ( no waiting dialog as /f does not show that ) So i waited ten minutes, still no reboot.

I am at a loss, and Google is really not helping any either.

I need the TSF geniuses :)

Thanks guys for your time!

For the past few days my laptop, a Windows 8 Samsung model with Intel core i5, has been acting up for the first time since I purchased it last year. I've been away on vacation for three weeks, and have not used it during that period, so when I returned the system naturally installed itself with new updates. But ever since then, my audio driver has not worked whenever I initially booted the computer (i.e. there is no sound); interestingly, YouTube videos also refuse to load. It is only when I restart the computer, or disable then enable the driver manually, that things return to normal. Or, at least, somewhat. For when I try to shutdown the system, the computer hangs and just doesn't shutdown. It seemingly performs the processes required for it, the screen darkens, but the system does not power off. The first time I had to manually turn off the power, but last night I simply let it continue with the hope that it would shutdown eventually. It did... but only because my laptop battery ran out.

Before anyone immediately recommends System Restore, I tried that route already. No matter which restore point I used, the system told me that each restore was unsuccessful due to the possibility that my C drive was corrupt. I don't know if that's the case - certainly something is wrong - but I'm at a loss as to exactly what to do. If anyone can help me, I'd really appreciate it.

On my laptop, as I'm sure most laptops by now, there is an S-Video (SVHS) output to show the display through a TV/projector. The annoying thing is that, whenever I plug in, the picture doesn't show on the TV screen as it should, and I must reboot for it to work.

Now is there something else I could do, to avoid having to reboot, such as switching something off/on? How about disabling/enabling the video driver, or even uninstalling/reinstalling. Although this seems drastic, with the right keyboard shortcuts this could be a much quicker method of getting the picture on the TV.

Any suggestions?

I have been getting the following message for the last few days with video issues..

"Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver , Version 306.97 stopped responding and has successfully recovered." at my lower right. Its stops randoming after a few minutes of use.

I had been runnning the 296.10 Drivers since they came out with no issues this started a few days ago so i removed the drivers and installed the 306.97 drivers with the same issues..............

This morning after several of the same issues I booted to Safe mode removed the NVidia Video Drivers and let the computer reboot and install the basic vga drivers I have been running this way for over an hour with no issues.......and suggestions?

A:Video Driver Stops responding Recovers

I can think of a few possible scenarios.

Your graphical hardware is overheating.
There is corrupted remnants of NVIDIA software causing issues.
Your GPU is loose in the socket, or your motherboard is physically damaged.
Please install a stable latest WHQL release of your driver software after removing them using one of many NVIDIA cleaning tools, and then watch the temperature of your GPU while you are playing a game/etc., that would cause this to occur.

If the temperature seems fine, then you may want to consider booting in to another Windows installation on a separate Hard Drive to check if your current one is corrupted in some way or another.

When all else fails, reseat your GPU in the system and hope for the best. If it's still happening then consider testing your GPU in another PC.

I adjusted the resolution to a bunch of different settings. It did not help. I tried multiple video players. It did not help. I tried adjusting the settings on the TV. It did not help. We have a Lenovo T440s laptop that had a failing drive. We manage to clone the systems partition and manage to repair a where after the clone, the MBR was corrupted and needed to be repaired using the Windows 7 DVD.

Everything else seems fine and we ran chkdsk to make sure their no errors (it repaired a few using the DVD in order to get it to boot and then ran fixmbr to repair the boot records).

However the only issue we are facing is everytime we do a proper shutdown or reboot, the machine will boot up saying that windows has not properly shutdown and to select "start windows normally". Any ideas what can cause this issue and what can we
do to fix it.

I am unsure if maybe the corruption caused this (as the recovery partition and the MBR partition were both lost). I reformatted the recoveyr partition into a NTFS drive since I couldn't recovery that partition by itself.

I dont have access to that laptop at the moment as the user took it on vacation till next week but was looking into inputs as to what I can do to resolve this.

I also checked the system logs and it shows "windows was shutdown uncleanly" and such but we did shut it down using the normal windows shutdown button and restart button, both of which cause this error.

I have an Inspiron 15 7579 2-in-1. When I connect an Asus MG279 via HDMI port, occasionally the screen will go black, usually for about 5-10 seconds, but sometimes much longer. Unplugging the HDMI cable and plugging it back in will usually fix it.
I have ensured I have the latest drivers for the Intel HD Graphics 620 display adapter:
I have a Dell Latitude E7270 that is normally connected via HDMI to this monitor, and everything works great. When I unplug the HDMI cable from the Latitude and plug it into the Inspiron, I will get these flickers roughly every 1-5 minutes. So I have ruled out the cable and the monitor. I also ran the video troubleshooting diagnostics test from Dell and it passed.
I route the audio from the laptop through the HDMI cable into speakers plugged into the monitor, and that cuts out as well.
Anyone have any ideas on this? It is very frustrating to try to work with this happening.
Thank you.

Not sure if this is the exact right forum for this but...I have a lenovo 90f1006fus that I got from best buy last year.  Tonight a new problem started, where the display sort of flickers--the colors stretch--and then it shuts off.  The monitor is still on, it's just like it is asleep.  I've tried using the monitor with my laptop and it works just fine.  Also the display may turn on and off a few times before this happens.  It's working now but last time this only lasted 30 minutes.  Hopefully the problem magically disappeared, haha, but in case it didn't I am making this post to see if this is a common problem, and how I can fix it. I'm worried it may be my surge protector because earlier when I bumped it, the display flickered, so I've got it plugged into the wall right now.

Hello Fellow Forum readers,Ever since I've owned this refurbished Pavilion g4-2149se. I've had issues with what I thought was the Notebook rebooting itself. A:Computer Moving Choppy, video And Audio Also Is Choppy,Please Help me

Hi reezy and welcome to TSF !

Could be software or hardware. Let's check the hardware first. Please post your system specs (see the link in my sig). If this is a laptop then brand and model will do, if this is a desktop then don't forget the information from the sticker on the side of the power supply block (you'll have to open your case).

Enter the bios at startup by repeatedly pressing del when the computer starts (if del doesn't work, search for some message telling you which key to press to enter setup or have a look at this site). Search for some hardware monitor or PC health screen and report what your cpu temp, fan speed and voltages (+3.3, +5, +12V) are.

Hello!I have bought dell inspiron 15 5548 with linux. I installed windows 7 on it. This is my first laptop that has 2 video cards and i had problems with it from the get go.
I looked up all the drivers for the video cards on the dell.com website. There somehow is 3 video drivers recommended for install i will list them below:
1)Intel HD Graphics Driver (Video_Driver_99N14_WN32_10.18.15.4278_A03.EXE)
2)AMD Radeon R5 M240 Driver(Video_Driver_TJ5R3_WN_14.301.1002_A00.EXE)
3)AMD Radeon R7 M265/R7 M270 Driver (Video_Driver_V3RDN_WN_14.301.1002_A00.EXE)
At first i installed all 3 of them.

So the probkems that i had:
1)Windows every second or third time would not boot, after loading screen it would be plain black screen with nothing working.
2)if it loaded to windows screen would very soon start blinking, messages about amd video card  failing would start appearing. and BSOD followed in a fex moments
I figured that the cards might be conflicting, and after disabling intel video card the problems would disappear.
I tried removing all the drivers and after i installed only the hd driver and  r7 270  driver there were no such problems aswell (have to test a little bit more though). However after i try to test video card through windows rating system, it fails with error (Display driver stopped responding and has recovered) and the test does not finish. Also tried starting up dark souls 3. it also did not start and failed with the same error. On my other ... Read more

I have a Gateway laptop that runs Windows Vista Home Basic. I purchased the laptop early in the summer and until recently I've had no issues. I can get NO sound from my computer at all. The volume is up and the mute is off. It doesn't even play the windows start up sound anymore. About two weeks ago, I turned it on and everything looked different. As if the screen resolution had been changed. I checked that and it was the same as I've always had it. My icons and fonts and look bigger and sort-of blurry and my screen looks ever so slightly compacted and stretched out. If i try to play video clips, it plays "jerky" or about 2 seconds at a time. The videos play like I have dial-up (even though I have a cable connection). They DL just as quickly, but they play slow. Can anyone offer any suggestions??

My video card just recently started malfunctioning. I first noticed when black dots would appear over videos during playback. I shrugged it off, thinking it was nothing big. Eventually I ended up playing Counter-Strike. These are some screenshots of what it looks like in game.

It's also displaying everything else incorrectly as well. There are blue pixels appearing all over the place, on the desktop and in Browser windows and such. I tried re-installing the card many times, but nothing seems to work. I think I might have damaged the card somehow, but I don't know how exactly. I put a cold pack on it for a minute or two when it first started malfunctioning, figuring it might have been overheating.

Here is information about the card from dxdiag.

Name: VisionTek XTASY 9600
Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.
Chip Type: RADEON 9600 Series AGP (0x 4150)
DAC Type: Internal DAC(400MHz)
Approx. Total Memory: 256.0 MB
Current Display Mode: 1024 x 758 (32 bit) (60 Hz)
Monitor: Plug and Play Monitor
I should mention that I have an onboard Video Card as well, and when I hook the monitor up to that everything displays fine. Does anyone have any possible solutions?

I am using a Dazzle instant DVD recorder and running an Acer Aspire 5100 notebook with a AMD Turion 2.0Ghz processer with ATI Radeon Xpress 1100....with windows XP.

When I try to capture video onto my hard drive, or even direct record to DVD the Video is in double time, like its in fast forward. And the audio plays in real time, so of course the audio is not in sync with the video and it's terrible. Any ideas?

Dazzle is reknowned for being crappy. Canopus or Hauppauge are good.

I have, as I see it, a very unique problem with my computer.
I turn my computer on, and sound works, I can turn on winamp, play music etc.
But, after random amount of time, my sound driver just disappears, when go to
Control Panel and Sound and Audio Devices, it says I have no driver/sound card.

Funny thing is, when I open winamp at the beginning when it works, it continues to play music even when it already says I have no sound, I can even add more stuff to winamp, but ONCE I turn it off, It wont open again because I have no sound drivers!
The amount of time before this happens varies, once it was hour and a half, but not it was only 15 minutes. Of course, Im still listening to music, because I havent turned off winamp yet (although, any other program I start after the malfunction, sound wont work with it).

I tried to reinstall my drivers, but I couldnt find a way how to remove everything from Device manager under "Sound, Audio and Gaming Devices", but nothing changed. When I removed what I could, windows found it as new hardware, but didnt want to install new drivers since "the latest possible version is installed". Sound of course wasnt working, until I installed drivers I downloaded from the net, but then it just returned to where it is now.
Also, right now, device manager tells me everything runs ok, but "Sound" in Control Panel says I have no drivers.

I have no idea what this is, and I want to use system reinstall as... Read more

Hi, just bought a Pavilion X2 with Win 10 Home OS,I continously a pop-up message in the low rigth corner that the video driver stopped responding and then got restarted. This happen on a continuous base many times every 5 minutes (sometimes even 20 or 30 times).Very annoying, also because it makes the computer almost impossible to use. Strange thing is that I've installed any extra applications, and moreover it happends when the only application running if the web browser (edge). I've re-installed the video driver from the hp web product page (including the ones needed for the intel chipset) but it doesn't help. Any idea about what can I do ? Thank youSilvio

A few days ago I downloaded the AVG virus protection onto my computer and I used some of the tools they had to get rid of duplicate files, etc. Now I notice that when I go to YouTube to try to view a video, it just keeps having that little circular thing spinning around, buffering the videos all throughout the video which makes it where I can hardly watch a video now. I am not sure if its that there are some missing components on my computer, but just guessing thats the problem.

Anyway, so I tried doing a System Restore on my computer to set it back a month and that didnt work.

I also tried uninstallinging and re-installing the Adobe FlashPlayer and that doesnt work. I did notice thats acting strange because I go to my Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it then try to reinstall it. It acts as if it refuses to install it all the way, then when I go to the Add/Remove Programs its there again. Making it where I cannot install it because it says its already there but it seems like its not really installed.

I also tried redownloading RealPlayer and also Windows MultiMedia just in case there might be some missing components from that that is causing the problem.

I am pretty much Computer Illiterate so I dont really know what to do.

Can anybody help me with this problem please?

Hello guys I'm having this problem that sometimes whenever I try to watch videos on my browsers it will not play immediately but instead waits till the whole thing gets buffered all the way to the end, at the same time when this happens whenever I try to download files it wont also start. While this anomalies are happening nothing else seems to be wrong. I can browse, torrents are working fine, I can even play online games.

The solution I've managed to do for now is to restart my computer since logging off and back on again doesn't do anything but I think restarting 3 to 5 times a day is not a healthy thing to do for my computer.

I am running on windows 7 ultimate and I use opera browser but I also tried using firefox and chrome but it's still the same.

I hope you guys can help me! And I don't want to believe that a clean install of my OS is going to be the only solution.
~oops sorry I think I poster on the wrong category, please feel free to put it on the place~

I have a ASRock G31M-S Motherboard. My system has started to randomly dump and reboot. I have tried downloading and installing most recent drivers available from ASRock site, as well as all other hardware, Scanning for file system corruption and viruses, etc. I think I have isolated the issue to the video accelerators in that I have turned them all off and I have not experienced the issue since.
I will include the information from one of the dumps below. I am at my wits end, how do I correct the issue so I can turn the accelerators back on and put an end to the issue?

I have attached a file "error.txt" containing the various logs genetartyed from the dump.

Thank you in advance
