Play sound files

Q: Play sound files

Is there a way that I can get my sound files to play via WINAMP as opposed to REAL-PLAYER.?

I have got individual files to play by going into 'My Sounds' and right clicking; 'open with' and then selecting WINAMP but the next time I go to play the files it defaults to REAL.

Preferred Solution: Play sound files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Play sound files

Real Player is changing them back. Open Real Pain and go into setting or preferences and where it has file types remove the tics from all those ext. you want winamp to play and then open by right clicking and setting the file association with winamp.

Hello... I searched the forum for 'APE'.. some amusing threads about going ape**it, some about converting APE to FLAC...

I don't want to convert my APE audio files. I want to play them directly in WMP 12 just like I could in previous versions of WMP (on XP, for example).

My WMP plays mp3 and FLACs fine. I installed something last week called Shark007 which enabled me to add APE files to the player, and indeed play them. However, it also caused WMP to crash every time an mp3 finished and the next track in the playlist was a FLAC, and vice versa. In other words, it couldn't handle switching from one type to another in the playlist and crashed. I had a hell of a game uninstalling that ... Back to before now... though.. stability.

Is there a codec or something that will enable me to drag a sound file with a .APE extension into the Play tab on the right side of WMP 12 (it doesn't even let me do that at the moment) and play the file ok ?

There was one on download.com but when I checked the last 5/6 reviews, they were terrible - had a lucky escape there. Didn't bother with it.

The only codec I currently have installed is 'Media Foundation FLAC Codec'.

Try running chkdsk /r (should automatically be done by user after any hard shutdown) then remove the current drivers for audio and install either the ones from the CD or drivers downloaded from the appropriate website.

I have had Windows XP pro for quite a while but just upgraded to SP2. Now some of my sound files will not play. I can hear MIDI's loud and clear but no other sounds, including Windows standard .wav sounds. No MP3s or streaming radio, NADA. Before upgrade I listened to these regularly. For some reason the only sound file type that is now recognized is MIDI. The other sound formats are not being recognized. I have several players on my PC. Windows Media, Real Player, Nero, Creative. It's the same in all of them. MIDI play fine but none of the other sound formats will play.
Can you help with this.

Thanks, Klaire

I am trying to figure out how to play sound files from the HD over a chat session. I have tried several things with partial success, but I am kind of lost in the numerous options in the "Volume Control" box.

I noticed that under "Recording Control" (Volume Control -> Options -> Properties), I have the following boxes checked:

Volume Control, Wave, SW Synth, CD Player, Microphone, Line In, Phone Line.

And then if I have checked the box under "Stereo" and "Microphone", the other side is able to hear what I play on my PC, but they start hearing an echo when they speak.

I would like to be able to do this on any chat program (such as Yahoo/MSN messenger, Skype), but if it matters, I am trying this with Skype 4.1.x.x at present.

I have also tried a program called Skype Player with no success since I could not figure out how to choose/open the file I wish to play. The UI does not have any menu item for opening a file. Also, if I use something like this, then I would be only limited to playing it on Skype.

Thanks for any clues.

Here is a tough one for the audio gurus out there.

I have been recording lectures on my phone for years using a program called Easy Voice Recorder. It records in wav format. I transfer the files to my PC and convert them to smaller mp3's, which I typically play with winamp. I could of course also play the original wav files with my default player for those, windows media player (WMP).

This worked fine under winXP. A few months ago I converted to win 7. Now, when I play the wav files in WMP, the progress indicator moves along, but there is no sound. When I play the converted mp3's in winamp, the graphical level indicators bounce up and down, and progress indicator moves along, but there is no sound.

Before you tell me to turn up the volume, or turn on the speakers, or to select the right output device, note that when I play wav files from another source in WMP, there is sound. And when I play other mp3's in winamp, there is sound as well on win 7.

Furthermore, when I play the recorded wav files or mp3's with VLC, they do play and produce sound under Win 7. When I play the mp3's with another editing program called mp3 direct cut, they also play fine and produce sound under win 7.

Furthermore, when I play the same wav and mp3 files on another older machine still running XP, they still play and produce sound there as well.

So the problem is very specific - that recordings made with this software (Easy Voice Recorder), played with these players (WMP, wina... Read more

16 bit, 16Khz is not a valid Windows format from what I see. 16 bit 44.1Khz is the lowest wav format (this is "CD" quality). I looked at my RealTek and that was the lowest I could go.

I have a strange problem after re-installing Window 7 Home Premium onto a new Transcend SSD, having altered the BIOS drive mode to ACHI. All my data was backed up and re-installed with little trouble. But now I can't play music on WMP or anything else, and there are no system sounds at all.

I thought at first it was a matter of settings, and have altered everything I can think of, to no avail. I have uninstalled and re-installed all the sound devices, updated all the drivers I can see, and nothing works. However the restored files themselves are not corrupted, as I can hear them (and the system sounds) by plugging in earphones. The (Creative) speakers test properly in Control Panel. Also, Windows Media Centre does play and record TV, with normal sound. One USB device is shown as not starting, but I think it's the volume control for the speakers and it has always worked even when shown thus.

The MOBO is an AsusTek M2N68-VM, and Device Manager also shows under Sound, video and game controllers a TV card (USB), High Def Audio Device (Windows basic?), Nvidia HDMI Audio Device, and VIA High Def Audio, which I think is the one that matters.

Can anyone help me before I throw the SSD away and re-install everything as it was before!

A:Speakers and WMC work, but can't play any other sound files

Hello and welcome excessive now do the speakers work on another machine or sound device?

Are they connected by USB or the jack I can't quite make out how from your description and also the Creative speakers did they come with any form of software if so what is the model number of them.

Now I am assuming you have updated the driver for audio but from what source - I am not a fan of the Windows feature and always use the board or the actual manufactures site for drivers such as that.
The one you want is this one for that update http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M2N68VM/HelpDesk_Download/

I am not sure of what the NVidia Sound Device you mention is though? as I can find no mention of it on the Asus site.

I think you should also look at what version of the BIOS you have installed too and I am assuming you know the risks of updating the BIOS so be careful.

I've recently purchased a new pc with Vista Home Premium installed.

There appears to be a lot of information on the web and this site about midi problems with Vista. They all seem to mention problems with external equipment.

My question is, what do I need to do to my pc to play midi files through the inbuilt sound card.

When I attempt this, I get an error saying No hardware installed or is not responding.

I'm using Powerpoint 2013 on a Windows 7 system. A productivity killer for me is in editing sound files. For example, if I have a presentation with fifty slides and I have a sound file that starts at Slide #15 and runs across slides till it ends at the end of Side #22 which has a duration of, say, ten seconds. If I want to have the slide change at the last beat of the song I need the timing exact. To make an adjustment, if I play Slide #22 I don't get sound; I need to start the show at Slide #15 then run through all eight slides during the song to get another shot at an adjustment. I really hope I'm missing something here and would love to have the option of just playing Slide #22 for ten seconds and have only the LAST approx. ten seconds of the song play so I can see the results of my previous adjustment...

A:Solved: Editing of Sound Files without having to play whole song

I don't think there is that option.

When I try to play a music file, Media player is coming up with this message:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

The Microsoft web help says that the error message code is C00D11BA.

After searching in add remove programs, I can't find any audio device or driver. The sound was working fine until I was deleted some programs which I don't use anymore...I could have deleted the driver by mistake. I have an acer aspire 3000...any suggestions on what to do?

A:[SOLVED] media player not able to play sound files

Hi zoerella and welcome to TSF !

Does the sound work in your other programs ? Try the games like spider solitaire (press F5 and check that use sound is enabled) or pinball for instance.

Go to the device manager : start => run => devmgmt.msc. Tell us if there's some flag (yellow warning sign or red cross) in front of one of the devices there.

What's the exact model of your aspire 3000 (3050, 3027xy, ... or just 3000 ?) ? It seems that some laptops in the aspire 3000 serie uses a Crystal 423x sound device while others use a Realtek AC'97 sound device. Please use everest from the "posting system specs" link in my sig to find what's the model of your audio device.

If it's crystal 423x :
You'll have to unzip the files to some folder and install the drivers manually from the device manager

If it's Realtek :
select audio in the first list. Download and unzip the package and run setup.exe.

A:Unable to play any sound files or videos, suspecting a buggy.

It looks all clear here. Make sure it's not a driver or hardware issue. See if it works in Safe Mode (if it does, then something might be hiding in the computer causing this problem). If you want, run the Kaspersky scan and see if it finds anything:

Make sure you turn off any antivirus programs you have running while performing the online scan below. Using Internet Explorer, run a virus scan at http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner Click on 'Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner' and install the ActiveX component from Kaspersky. Click Yes and it will begin downloading the latest definition files. Once that's done, click on 'Scan Settings' and make sure the following are selected:

Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
- Extended

Scan Options:
- Scan Archives
- Scan Mail Bases

Click OK. Now under select a target to scan, select 'My Computer'. It will start and scan your system. The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected. Now click on the 'Save as Text' button. Save the file to your desktop. Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hello, I need software to play QCP cell phone sound files on a PC. I use my cell phone as a voice recorder and would like to listen to some presentations on my computer. Transferring these files to my PC, it appears that "Real Player" is a default to open them. I've tried and the screen seems to show Real Player playing the file, but no sound comes out. I've also tried QuickTime, VLC media player, & Windows Media Player, none of which seems to play this type of file. I've also tried to use a program I have called "Switch" to change the file to MP3, that I know I can play, but Switch doesn't recognize the file format.

Any help here would be appreciated. If I need a program other than the ones I have, a freebie would be nice. Thanks.

Ive got a 32GB memory stick.
It has about 24GBs of video files on it currently.

However when i put any new video files from my laptop onto it, and then try opening the, my video player just wont play any of them!!

The video player opens, but instead of showing the video timer as 0.00/3.20mins (to show that is has 3.20mins of video in the file which it will play),
it just shows 0.00/0.00 as the timer, and wont load the video at all!!
The current video files i have on there all play fine, but any new files i put on in the exact same format just wont play!

And it also f**ks up the video file itself just by being put on there though!

As i have a video on my laptop which plays fine, i put it on the memory stick and it wont play, i transfer it back from the stick to my laptop but the file then still wont play, and so has been corrupted somehow just by being placed on the memory stick!
Can anyone please please help??

I am trying to play system sound through Skype calls so that the other end can hear. I have tried using a Virtual Audio Cable for this but the quality is really bad, just sounds like I'm blasting a speaker into the mic. I've looked through online tutorials and most of them have a simple solution; Stereo Mix. I've enabled Stereo Mix, made it default device, enabled it through my mic in Skype audio settings. The only problem is, when I play a Youtube video, the sound doesn't go through. This is my sound control panel when playing music:

As you can see the visualizer on the right side is completely silent, and it's not going through at all. I've tried numerous combinations (mic is default communication device, mic is disabled, stereo mix is default device, etc) and they all don't work. I've searched elsewhere for solutions and they are all faulty. I feel like I'm missing something huge here. Hope one of you can help me. Thanks

Hey there.

So I'm having a problem playing .wmv files on my system (it's not just WMP). Everytime I play a file with a .wmv extension, the file will play, with proper audio and everything, but the colour will be messed up, almost as if the player (could be WMP, Realplayer, Quicktime etc...) is playing in negative mode. I can't fix it even with codecs. I've downloaded numerous codec packs, codecs from Microsoft, third parties, everywhere, and I can't seem to fix it. This only happens with wmv files, mpg, avi, mpeg etc...all play perfectly.

Hi Everyone,

Here's a weird one for you....

I have a Compaq laptop (work) and when I am in hotel rooms away from home I like to play MP3 music files as we all do. However, when I play these music files they start off OK, then after say 5 to 20 seconds, the music plays in slow motion!!! I don't know if it is actually half speed, but the notes are the same pitch - just down an octave or so...!! I can press 'pause' then 'play' straight away and it resumes at normal speed, but again after 2 to 20 seconds resorts to half speed ...

This happens for MP3's with both Windows Media Player and Winamp..... strange eh!

Has anyone experienced the same problems ??? and does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do??

At a lab I've spent numerous hours on this animation that I'm entering into a national competition. In PowerPoint I had my friend narrate it, and uploaded to drop-box. Two of the sound clips still are recognized as sound clips and will play, but the other 12 don't. How do I fix this? The due date is tomorrow.

Not knowing what format they were uploaded to and if they all were uploaded in the same format, its hard to say. Are you using the same powerpoint version?

Can you look at them individually within powerpoint and see what they are listed as (not the powerpoint show).

Although this is an audio problem, its more a Powerpoint problem and maybe should be posted in the MS Office section.

I've got one W7 PC, with one Creative X-Fi soundcard in it, on a motherboard that has built in audio.

I'd like to play two music tracks on my PC at the same time, using any browser or browsers. I'd like one track to be heard on one set of speakers, and the other track to be heard from another set of speakers.

To potentially make things a bit easier, I'm happy to either run two instances of any one particular browser (eg two Firefox browsers open at the same time), or run two seperate browsers (eg one Firefox and one IE).

If there is any software that needs to be bought to achieve this, then I'm happy to buy it. Thanks a lot for any recommendations/advice on this subject.

BTW, the music must be played from a browser(s).

When trying to open volume control it says

"no active mixer device available. To install mixer devices, go to control panel and click add hardware" .

but the sound card is already installed i remove the same several times and try to reinstall but of no use.

In control panel when i click at sounds and audio devices in volume tab it says "no audio devices" and all the options there are disabled same situation in audio tab.

At Hardware tab when i click the driver installed (CMI9739A) in properties section it shows that "driver is enabled but has not been started".

I checked in the CMOS settings there the device is enabled.

I tried my best but not able to correct it can anyone help me resolve the situation.

Thanks in advance

A:On board sound card cannot play sound

When you reformatted and reinstalled Windows, you lost many of the drivers you formerly had installed. Now you have to reinstall any drivers that are missing. Check the Device Manager and if you see any yellow symbols next to any device listed, those need drivers installed.

For your onboard sound, for example, you should find the sound driver on the motherboard driver CD that should have or might have come with it. If you don't have this CD, you should be able to download the onboard sound driver from the motherboard manufacturer's website. In your case, I think the manufacturer is ECS Elitegroup.

Hi there. This isn't actually my first post, I posted before as TomasKay (I think!) but I've got a little problem with Media Player 10 that isn't so bad but it's been bugging me for a while and I need to sort it. Basically, when there is an embedded Media Player element in a webpage (the kind where controls aren't immediately available), the media file will usually connect to network, buffer and then say "Ready", but not play. There's no error message or anything like that, and when I right-click and try to play from the menu, it just does the same thing. Added to that, I have never been able to play WMA files that have a DRM (not that it matters so much, as I have an iPod, but still) and lately Media Player has refused to play anything that requires a licence... I'm on Windows XP SP2, if you need anymore details, ask and I'll find out. Thanks for your time everyone

My husband and i are in a band and are trying to upload our music to a local site. It said we needed mp3 files so we tried coverting our wave file to an mp3 file ( my husband downloaded something that said it could do this) and now we have no sound. The speakers still make little crackling noises like they are still live but we get no sound.

A:Tried to convert music files from wave files to mp3 files and no NO SOUND WHATSOEVER

Try a different program.

Are you converting from CD, or a wave file on the hard drive?

Have you installed the correct drivers?

Go into device manager by typing cmd in search, then device manager.

go to the appropriate tab (in this case display) and check to see that the driver for the graphic card and monitor is listed and working. Also check the sound driver.

Are there any "unknown drivers" with yellow triangles on them?

I think I deleted something I shouldn't have... in my laptop. Win 98SE. The drivers say they are working... this is the message that comes when I try to play a sound file: 0xC00D11BA: Cannot play the file
Any ideas? Maybe re-install Thinkpad CD, or Win98 SE?

I'm assuming Windows, here- go to control panel>>sounds and audio devices, clich audio tab, then volume, be sure nothing is muted. Then rt-click my computer, click manage, then device manager, then sound, video and game controllers, then right-click each item that applies to your on-board soun, and click properties-- be sure each is "enabled". If this doesn't help- maybe we can find something else.

System: Vista Home Premium 32bit

I am currently displaying my computer monitor on my TV. I am using HDMI output from my computer, and DVI input on my TV. The problem is that I cannot hear sound from the TV--it's still coming my from my computer speakers.

My computer has a manual entitled "Important Audio Settings." It reads as follows:

To set S/PDIF as your default audio playback device, follow these steps:
1. Select Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound icon.
2. Select the Playback tab.
3. Select S/PDIF Interface > Set Default, and then click OK.
4. Start QuickPlay (or restart it if it is already running), and you should hear audio on your device.

My problem is that I do not have the option "S/PDIF Interface" in my Playback tab. I found a website that suggested right-clicking the white area and checking "show disabled devices," but it's still not showing up! How can I get this option to appear?

Please help me. Thank you.

EDIT: I received a response on a separate forum:

It is muted somewhere. Right click where you see the green leveler > Properties > Levels. Or just click on the speaker icon and see whether the volume is on. Check also in the Realtek Audio Manager.

Well, I bought a dvd legally which I can play normally (with sound) on my dvd player linked to the television.

However, when I try to play it on the computer, it plays as it should but without sound. This specific dvd is the only dvd in which it plays no sound. I have unmuted all sound types on my computer but still to no avail. Help please.

A:No sound when I play a dvd.

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Because this is the only dvd that you`re haveing a problem with. It has to be specific to this dvd.

Go into the dvd`s sound menu, and see what options are available.

If the dvd has dts surround sound, try selecting dolby digital, or stereo, if available.

DTS sound won`t play unless you have a dts decoder on your sound card, and a digital connection, either optical, or coaxial.

Hello, I am new to all this! I have a 2.5 yr old Compaq Presario laptop OS Windows Vista Basic 32 bit. It has no problems, free of malware and viruses. mainly for young children use and my pictures/music. It plays MP3 & CD's no problem. Burning a cd with wmp is no problem. It has Quicktime on it and it plays DVD's w/out a problem, but it is too soft, my kids can barely hear it, esp. if on a plane or in the car. I want to use my Windows media player but while it plays my cd's and mp3's without a problem, there is not sound, only the movie playing, when I play DVD's. Can anyone help me figure out how to either turn up the sound on my Quicktime and/or get my WMP working? Thanks!!

A:Help! No sound when I play DVD's

Wlecome to the forum!

Low volume audio on DVD playback can be caused by many different things.
I will try to list all the possibilities and their solutions.

1. Volume in playback software (quicktime/WMP) is too low.
Try looking for volume slider(s) in the software and crank those up

2. windows audio volume is too low.
Click on the speaker icon in the lower right corner of screen on start bar and drag
the slider up

3. wrong DVD audio track played over stereo speakers.
If you are playing a DVD that has multiple audio track choices try different ones and
see which one gives the loudest/best volume. I have personally experienced that
playing 5.1 tracks (dolby digital/DTS) over stereo speakers can have many undesired
effects such as overall low volume or high background/music but low voices.
This is due to the playback software not properly being able to convert the 5.1 audio
into stereo audio. If changing audio tracks doesnt work I highly recommend getting
different playback software that properly converts it.
Your ideal solution would be Media Player Classic:
Free-Codecs.com :: Download Media Player Classic : Media Player Classic is an enhanced version of Media Player 6.4

I hope this helps,

Good luck!

Sorry, this isn't exactly related to sound, but I didn't know where else to put this.

I have some DVDs with enhanced computer content and I use Interactual Player to play them. Soem of these features work properly, but most don't have sound. I know that the reason for this is because Interactual Player isn't compatible with Vista. So I need to know: Are there any other programs that can play ENHANCED CONTENT? I'm not talking about the actual movie and the special features you can play on a TV, I'm talking about features that you can only use on a computer, but you need a special program to run (usually Interactual Player)

Any help is greatly appreciated!
