I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This seems to have occurred in conjunction with my switching from add-in video card back to the on-board display adapter (something I've done numerous times before without a problem). Perhaps it's unrelated.

No other functional problems that I've seen.

I ran AVG anti-virus scan, as well as CounterSpy spyware scan. Both found zero problems.

Alright here's the thing recently I started to get some Vista themes for my XP Home Edition SP 2. After searching around I came across a video in youtube containing links to vista-looking themes. The first two links worked fine but when it came for the 3rd link, I was able to install everything on the Zipped file except for one of the programs whose name I forgot. Anyways while trying to install one of them (think it was the one for window shadows....) my computer hanged for a few seconds then it restarted itself. Once it did EVERYTHING on my desktop except for the background was gone.

The only thing I could do was press ctrl+alt+delete for the task manager. Everything in the computer works fine but I have to use the Task Managers New Task command to run programs. And therefore I need help to get the start menu and everything at the bottom back. (to end my suffering)

Just a day ago I had this happen and now it won't go away. When I clock on the volume icon on my system try it shows the volume for a split second then the start menu vanishes. If I hit the start menu button I get the start menu but I don't have access to anything on my task bar or system tray ( I can still use the items under the start menu). If I want to switch between programs or windows I have to use alt-tab.

If I log off and log back on sometimes it works for a bit but always goes back to this. I am running windows vista 32 bit.

Does anyone else have this issue or know how to fix it?

~If I click on my start button menu everything is gray until I scroll over it and then I can see the icons but the gray is still behind them~ The system tray icons are gray boxes but no pictures~ My shortcuts on the desktop are also gray but behind the pictures. At one point even my desktop went gray. I also lost some of my shortcuts after a restart and chkdsc was ran.

Guys,

Running Windows 10 Build 1709. What happens when there are updates in the Start Menu, (Where, for example, Update and Shutdown) is an option, but there are no System Tray notifications?

I ran System File Checker-No errors
I ran Windows Update Troubleshooter, and it found some pending updates and fixed them, saying that I needed to do a system restart first, which I did.
How often does Windows 10 check for updates? When will it check again, if it finds a conflict like a described above?

I do not want to do a manual update, because I don't want build 1803 yet, which I am afraid that I might get.

Hello all,
So about a month ago I restarted my computer and when it came back on all my programs pinned to my task bar and everything that was in my start menu was gone. From there I could not unlock the taskbar and nothing would pin in either the start menu or taskbar. I researched everywhere about it. I tried unlocking the taskbar in properties and registry with no luck. I finally found some posts about how my user profile was corrupt and from there I went on and made a new profile and copied everything and BOOM it all worked fine now. Well today it happened AGAIN! I restarted my computer and everything disappeared. So I think it is still a corrupt profile, but this is the second time it has happened. My question is. 1) is there another way to fix those two issues besides creating a new profile? and 2) What could be the cause of this happening twice in a month. Would a reformat fix it or is it a hardware issue?

ADD: I forgot to mention my outlook email profiles are gone too. Those somehow got erased as well.

I have a client that has laptop with windows 7 Pro. He had a faulty network card, so I have added a new, usb network card. That said, He can not pin anything to taskbar or start menu. I cleared both folders of shortcuts(567 of them) but to no avail. He also has no options under his desktop Context menu for New. He is also using a roaming profile, of which I will disable next time I am there. I have a feeling that might be the issue. I did scour the internet trying all the usual suggestions, but do vaguely remember something about an entry in cache somewhere that if it is too big or corrupt, it could cause this behavior. I am unable to find that post anywhere now. Any thoughts? I would appreciate it. I mention the network card because one post had taskbar issues until he disabled his faulty network card. I have disabled the faulty network card.

Hey Guys,

I'm not too sure if this may be possible. I've done a bit of "googling" but the key words always bring up "how to move the taskbar" but that is not what I want....

Basically my monitor has developed a small leak down on the bottom right, nothing major, it can wait until I've saved up to get a nice new one. For now though I can't see my tray notification and more importantly the clock. Is there anyway to move the sytem tray (including the clock) further towards thw middle so that I can see it?

XP has been around for years so I would have thought someone would have come up with a way!

Thanks

A:Move the system tray NOT the taskbar

It's built into the program to always be on the right of the taskbar when horizontal (top or bottom) and the bottom of the taskbar when vertical (left or right side).

What I'd like is for a program that normally appears in the system tray to show in the taskbar at all times it is running so i can easily see it and use the exit functions etc.
Specifically for Steam - (X) minimizes to system tray and hides activity in the task bar. I don't mind if this results in 2 icons showing (1 for an active window and 1 for the process) I know you can do the same from system tray for this particular program, but I just don't have the habit to look there for anything other than system background applications.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional x64 and am comfortable tinkering with registry and system files if needed.

So the questions are:
1/ Can a system tray icon be permanently moved to the taskbar applications area?
2/ If not, can a background process be assigned a taskbar icon when active?
Thanks in advance,
Eric

This is actually for a friend and I tried everything I could think of but nothing works. She recently installed WindowBlinds and as she was installing Avast it apparently happened (if this helps)

What happened is the icons in the System Tray, and the Quick Launch icons because the Start menu, and even the icons inside the Start menu have enlarged. They are probably 1.5x the size of the original and are also blurry. The time in the bottom right now includes the date also.

I thought her taskbar was moved up a notch, but it's as low as it can go. So thats not the problem. If you right-click the taskbar when it is unlocked and go to View, you can change the icons from large to small. It's on small. So something else happened.

Any clue what could've happened?

Bear with my details, as I fear this is not a common problem- I can't find it on Google. I have been recently (not sure what caused it) having troubles with the taskbar and system tray in windows XP Pro. Some time after a fresh reboot (seems not to occur directly after a reboot), my windows on the taskbar don't respond correctly to my mouse clicks. That is to say that for instance right now, if I click on a different internet explorer window (on the taskbar), that window doesn't come up in front of this window as in normally would. Instead the taskbar section of that window changes from its regular blue colour to the dark orange colour as it would if something in that window had changed in the background (for example when you get a message on a MSN messenger window that is running in the background).
Alt-tabbing brings up the window no problems and if I click the desired 'task' 3 times it comes up -(once to turn colour, twice to minimize it, and the third time it pops up in the foreground). This is quite ANNOYING.

The second issue is with the system tray. Often times, (with any application it seeems) when I right-click the sys. tray icon the resulting menu stays there even after I click off of it- in the background or in other applications. The only way to get rid of it is to select one of the menu options. This is also very annoying.

I doubt it is any virus or spyware, as I stay updated with those software.

This is one of those things that could be worded in so many ways, there may be a solution out there but I have no idea what phrasing may have been used in such a case. Basically, I recently switched to using a vertical taskbar on the left side, more workable area on widescreen monitors. I love it so far, except for the change in system tray behavior. They're doubled up, which is fine, but if I have an odd number of icons it disturbs my general arrangement. This is hugely annoying for me as I frequently use the system tray to open multiple applications I always have open in the background, such as IRC or AIM. Easiest to explain using animage.

Is it possible to have the tray like it is in the second one? Or if there is a way to have a single line of icons, that is also an acceptable solution.

When Windows starts up, the Start Menu is frozen for about 30 seconds(i.e. you can't click open it, quick launch icons cannot be clicked, etc), I've tried disabling all startup items in System Configuration Utility, but that didn't do anything. I also tried disabling some services that I didn't need.

After the start menu starts working again, not all my tray icons show up. The programs themselves load as I can see them in task manager, but they are missing the tray icons and the only way I can bring them back is if I close the programs and reopen them. Also, it's not the same tray icons disappearing over and over. For example, I have Winamp, Speedfan, and Comodo Firewall tray icons. Sometimes only the Winamp tray shows, other times it's only Comodo. The Speedfan tray icon never seems to load at all. Speedfan is the only program that is in the startup folder. Winamp and Comodo both have an option to start up along with Windows. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it though.

Any idea what's causing this? Should I post up a Hijackthis log?

Hi,

I'm using Windows 2000. To make a long story short, when I opened my desktop yesterday, no desktop icon appeared and there was also no START bar/menu. In other words, what I got was a plain blank black screen with only the mouse pointer (which, by the way, responds as I move the mouse ).
Here are some more details:
- though the mouse responds with movement, I CANNOT get the options "Active Desktop, Arrange Icons, Refresh, Properties, etc" that usually appear when you do a right-click on the desktop. THis just doesnt happen.
- I could, however, launch Task Manager when doing a Ctrl+Alt+Del. From here, I could launch applications when clicking the "New Task" button. I've tried opening the usual applications that I use like MS Office, etc. and goodthing I was able to open them. So im not sure what the problem is since I can open applications via the long route
- I've tried rebooting and starting in "Safe Mode" but same problem. NO icons, no Start bar, etc.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this? Was anything corrupted? What do I need to check?

Any input would be very appreciated. Thanks!!!!

Hi, I am very limited to my knowledge of computers and how to fix the problems. If anyone can give me any advice about my computer I would very much appreciate it. I turned my computer on about a week ago, it froze up, I restarted it and was missing my taskbar and my files where opened in a separate window. Nothing simple works. The obvious things do not work. I have no start button. It will not do anything. If I go into control panel, cannot open it from there. Please help!

When I start up my computer, my Steam starts up, then I manually start Chrome. Chrome comes up fine, Steam does too, but when I try to right click on Steam and click friends, all it does is create another steam process running at 100-108 K. Then if I close Chrome and try to reopen it, it will do the same. This happens with EVERY program after I start up. There's a 5 second window where I can open programs without issue, then after that it will only start 108 K copies of them. It takes me around 30 restarts just to get it working properly, if not more.

I had XP Security Center 2012, which I removed except for redirecting my search engine click throughs. The search ran fine. Clicking on a search result resulted in new tab redirecting to some unknown crap site. The attempt to remove that has metastasized into a gold shield with ! in my system tray and FireFox only working with JavaScript turned off and, most troubling, my shut down menu defaults to "Install update and shutdown". Further note, attempts to run most programs from this site have resulted in the first effort failing but the program miraculously working the second time.

RKill would report no processes terminated but the gold shield ! would disappear.
DDS shut down, blue screen with white text saying "A problem has been detected ..." In a new paragraph identify "RDR_file_System".
GMER shut down. I closed GMER window, double clicked the GMER icon and ran fine the second time.

I am trying to help a friend of mine get her new computer to her satisfaction.

We both have Windows 7 and on mine (a few months old), I have both the large buttons on the taskbar at the button in addition to smaller icons to the left of them. She does not have to have the small buttons (Big ones are easy to setup) however, when she clicks on her Internet Explorer (and other programs she has pinned like Word, Excel, etc.) button at the bottom, it won't open up multiple sessions. Whereas on mine, I can click on the small IE button to the left and get as many sessions as I want.

I am also attaching a screen shot of my computer. As you can see, I have both big buttons and small buttons to the left. How does one get those small buttons? Thank you all VERY much for your help!!!

I have searched the web and tried several things.

I ran task manager and explorer.exe process is running. I closed it and ran it again.

I went to the registry and found the shell data and it is explorer.

I have tried ctrl+esc.

None of these things work!

Any ideas please?

Ok I have found something else on the web and tried it but does not fix everything

I right-clicked the bottom of my screen and now I have desktop toolbar and the start menu. But I can find no option to show the running tasks or windows if you prefer.

Edit: I am logged in to a secondary account right now as this one I have minimal success. My primary account I can not bring up taskbar at all!

This is account I have to right click bottom of screen and check something and it appears although it does not show tasks that are running.

Also when I log into my primary account(with no start menu or taskbar) I can hit windows+L and when I select another account it brings me right back to account selection and only one I can select successfully is the primary one.

To access my secondary login I needed to restart my computer and go straight there!

Hi. My husband has an eMachines T2341 running Windows XP Home Ed. He just reinstalled XP & upon completion found there is no 'Start' icon in the taskbar. I had him open 'My Computer' from the desktop & go to 'Control Panel'. From there, open 'Appearance & Themes' & then 'Taskbar & Start Menu'.
'Taskbar & Start Menu' will not open although 'Display' & 'Folder Options' will.
I'm stuck here...suggestions on how to pin the 'Start' icon to the taskbar?
Thanks for your help.

Some non-system applications cause this.In safe mode go to

Check error messages in Application and System sections, pay attention on errors which appears with system start.
