Q: Anti-virus removed virus now anti-virus won't turn back on.

My anti-virus said it removed a trojan. When I restarted my computer my anti-virus was turned off and it won't turn back on. I ran MalwareBytes and I didn't find anything, so I need some help.

Preferred Solution: Anti-virus removed virus now anti-virus won't turn back on.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Last night my browser restarted on its own and then I noticed that Google searches were being redirected. After that I noticed my anti-virus program was turned off and won't turn back on.

Tried a system restore, which worked at first but then the same problem came back.

I ran Malewarebytes in safe mode and the only thing it found was a file called "exploit.drop.9" located in the temp folder, which I removed. But I'm still have the same problem. What next?

I'm using Windows 7.

Hello everyone.

I have tried my best to remove this virus on my laptop, but no success yet.

Here are all of the things the virus does:

-Prevents access to websites like spybot, instead of letting me see the site, it simply says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage", and there is a button to click that says "Diagnose Connection Problem" (no connection problem of course)

-When I click links from a google search, they most of the time take me to the wrong webpage and I am forced to copy/paste the original link into the web bar.

-Programs like Combofix, Spybot, and HJT do not work and a box comes up after starting them saying "Combofix has stopped working".

-I tried running the programs in Safe Mode, but no luck there.

If anyone knows a fix please reply.

Thanks,

Sean

I have a nasty if not multiple nasty virus's and have not been successful removing them. It started with the XP Anti-Virus 2011 Removal fake anti-virus popping up with all real anti-virus programs disabled and anytime I try to go to an antivirus website I'm redirected to a random site. This happens in all browsers not just Internet Explorer. I also had many of my files changed to hidden file folders and also the start/all programs button does not show any of my programs. I mananged to get both Malwarebytes and Superantispyware on my computer and was able to get rid of much of the problems by running these programs. Now it seems the XP Anti-Virus 2011 has been removed but I still have the issue with my webpages being redirected depending on which page I try to access. I also have many processes that should not be running in the task manager and when i close them out they just start back up again. This worm seems to be accessing my iexplorer because there are multiple iexplorer.exe open at all times and sometimes the CPU Usage gets very high which is not normal for my computer. The final symptom is that at random times I get a webpage pop up or if not a webpage an error that reads like the following example:

An error has occured in the script on this page.

Error: Object doesnt support this property or method

Camera Wizard not poping up after removing Total Security/Antivirus Pro_2010 I have a PC with Windows XP SP3 with Avast, SuperAnti-Spyware and MBAM while browsing I got a yellow virus warning (something win32 I believe) from Avast pop up near the bottom tray and within seconds the Total Security pop-ups started. My PC slowed to a stop so I rebooted and saw that Antivirus Pro_2010 had installed itself on my PC. All my Anti Virus programs would not start (ie MBAM) so I ended up following forums to end some processes, delete some .dll files that were known to be malicious and rename the .exe's to get Anti Virus programs to run. I installed and used AVG which found a couple things. Then I used ComboFix, and finally I got MBAM to run which found a good 40+ trojans etc. I believe I got the virus off but I tried to restore to before I got the virus but was unable to. I have since run scans with MBAM and SuperAnti-Spyware which have found nothing. Avast also finds nothing but it has a list of 44 files (mostly in WINDOWS\ folder with the last path part of file doubled) that it is unable to scan: because "The system cannot find the specified path". When I look on my C: drive and follow the file path, the second to last part is always missing (ie. WINDOWS\addins\addins) addins is not there. When I plug in my camera, the camera wizard does not pop up anymore as it use to before I had and removed the virus. I also saw on the unscanable list that there was a WINDOWS\Connecti... Read more

Hi,

I just downloaded a "keygen" from bittorrent, and when I opened the exe file, nothing happened, then the exe file disappeared/deleted itself. I am pretty convinced that this was a virus, because my computer has slowed down significantly.

Now this part is unbelievable - I went online to download an antivirus program or the online Trend Micro scan, AND MY BROWSER (Firefox and IE) WON'T LET ME ACCESS ANY ANTI-VIRUS WEBPAGES!!! I managed to download Hijackthis and Spybot by downloading them through download.com, but it wouldn't let me go directly to the official sites! How strange is that?

Attached are links to the original file that I downloaded, if someone can scan it for me and deduce how to fix the problem, and also my Hijackthis log. (I hosted them on senduit.com for one week so you can access them.)

Thanks so, so much.

Got the Anti-virus soft virus more then a couple of weeks ago and was pretty sure I got it all. One of the things it did was attack my Hotmail account and send emails out to everyone in my contact list and my girlfriend got the (something) essentials 2010. I will post about that later on if I have problems. I was going to use the Hirens 10.2 boot disk and see if I could finish it off. I received an email from her with a couple of pictures of the kids. I opened one but not the other. The problem is she didn?t send me the email. Anyway I have used various spy-ware and malware removal tools as suggested from this very helpful forum and have the logs if you want to see them. So I am hoping you can take a look at my logs and see if you see any discrepancies. Thinking I need to reinstall Avast but not sure. A friend had the Anti-virus Number 1 virus on her computer. I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware AND Kaspersky's AVPTool on it, and that seemed to clear it up. Spy Sweeper and McAfee both claim the computer is now clean.

However, the computer is still running very slowly, and when I tried to empty the recycle bin, I got the following error:
"Cannot delete Dc317: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

As far as I could see, no files from the recycle bin were deleted at all.
I have no idea if Dc317 is a systems file (and if so, how it got in the recycle bin in the first place) or if it's a leftover from the virus, and the "I/O device error" has me scratching my head. I have no idea what to do from here.

I have not run HijackThis yet--I'll run it and post the log the next time I go over to her house (though I'm not certain this is a malware problem at all). The OS is Windows XP. Any suggestions?

Thanks for reading this.

Hello, I'm not sure when this all started, but recently I've been having troubles in a very generalized area which has led me to believe I have contracted some kind of virus/rootkit.

When I ran a scan with ESET Antivirus 4, I tried to update the virus definitions and found I couldn't. I then tried to access www.eset.com. Firefox gives me a notification that the connection was terminated. I tried getting malwarebytes anti-malware from the official website, but that has the connection terminated as well. windowsupdate.microsoft.com redirects to google.com, but otherwise I haven't noticed much abnormal behavior. I've ran scans with ESET, Malwarebytes, A-squared, Sophos, and the Super antivirus site was terminated but I intended to try a scan with that one. Here's my hijack this log:

So I'm trying to get rid of this so called anti virus xp2008. Got it down to it not cycling thru the "scan" , the desk top icon is gone and it has also been removed in the tray. Now It seems to be stuck in the background picture and I can't acces the settings to try and chage it, it is only like that for the main user on the account. It also still kicks into the blue screen saver that alerts me of viruses. I have installed Kaspersky, spyhunter and was thinking of trying Webroot... Please help.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Edition (x64), and I cannot activate any form of Anti-Virus. The Windows Action Center tells me that my Norton Anti-Virus Spyware, Virus, and Firewall protections have been turned off, and when I attempt to turn them on, I receive a message saying that they have been turned on properly, but the Action Center still tells me they are off. When I open the Norton Security Suite window, however, it tells me that all of these are on and running properly.

I believe this may be caused by a virus. At the same time this problem started occurring, my computer became significantly slower, taking three to four times as long to open files/navigate through my computer.

Hi, Ok so today i was clearing some data with the Disk Clean Up, almost right after that my computer became extremely slow and unresponsive, I found that my McAfee Security that came free with the laptop was Turned Off and it wont Turn On again. I have tried Installing AVG, running an Rkill that i downloaded last year and have done a System Restore as far back as possible but still my computer becomes unresponsive and wont open any programs unless i'm in safe mode. I'm officially stumped so any and all advice is appreciated. Thank you.

A:Can't Turn On Anti-Virus

Hi WillAnd87,In Safe Mode check to see if the McAfee Security that came free with the system is expired. Sometimes when free anti-virus expires it will lock up a system. Uninstall McAfee from the Add/Remove control panel applet. If uninstalling McAfee is a problem try using this link to download McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool 5.0.285.0 from a second computer and install and run on the problem computer. Also, uninstall AVG, if the installation was successful, check for it in the Add/Remove control panel applet as well. Then check to see if your windows firewall is turn on, if not turn it on.Now check to see if you can open programs in normal desktop. If your able to get to normal desktop, then download Microsoft Security Essentials from this link Microsoft Security Essentials and install. Windows Firewall should give you enough protection just to go to the Security Essentials web site and download. Don't browse anywhere else until youn install MS Security Essentials.Let us know how it goes??Hope this helps.

This is my first post on this site, and I turn to you in desparation!

I'm not sure if I have two problems, or one problem manifesting itself in two different ways, which is why I have combined this post.

I have somehow gained a programme named "Antivirus 2008" which is constantly warning me that I have 688 viruses on my computer. When this initially started, I ran my free copy of AVG. This warned me of the presence of Trojan Horses, but it was unable to remove them. The full version of AVG would, I was assured, sort the problem. In a moment of madness, I then purchased the full AVG8 programme.

On running AVG8 it informed me of the presence of a huge number of trojan horses, and offered to heal them. I accepted that option, and was informed that the trojans had been healed (or maybe it was removed/sent to the vault - to be honest, I'm getting a bit punch drunk now, and I'm not really sure)

Following this, AVG "Resident Shield Alerts" keep popping up every 15-20 seconds warning me of more Trojan horses. When I click "Remove Threats" or "Heal", sometimes I get a warning reply "Some files could not be found." Sometimes I don't. Either way, it doesnt make any difference - the next warning pops up about 20 seconds later. This is true whether I tick the "power user" box, or not.

The exact details given by AVG are :

File Name: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ppchcgq1j0elfv.exe
Threat Name: Troja... Read more

Hey Guys!

Hope you can help - Frustrated!!!

I was hit 2-3 times in the past couple weeks with different variants of the XP Anti Virus 2011
Each time I followed through on your removal guide and things seemed ok, but I am continuing to have numerous problems.

Windows update will not access the windows update web-site to get updates
numerous svchost.exe are running in taskmanager and they quite often use up all the cpu causing other programs not to operate
- sometimes when i shut down some of these svchost.exe files, programs that seemed to be not opening, open immediately
Google search sometimes re-directing to other pages.
computer will not complete the start-up routine quite often
Sometimes when doing a restart or shutdown it does not close properly
Some programs that used to open on startup are now not opening
Security center seems to shut down on its own and needs to be restarted
"Generic Host Process for WIN32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." pops up on a regular basis

Hello and welcome. Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.5.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.Click the Start Scan button.Do not use the computer during the scanIf the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. I'm a newby, logged on and got info on 11/9/08 regarding anti-virus pro 2009 removal used malwarebyes' anti-malware, then installed latest free version of avg 8.0The program removed some of my add on programs, which didn't bother me because I figure I can re-load them when I get everything else straightened out. Since the infection & clean up the my computer seems to be running fine albeit a little slower than usual. I use internet explorer as my main operating system, since the invasion and clean-up I haven't been able to access my hotmail, yahoo, or iwon email accounts from explorer, but i sometimes use safari and I can access all 3 from it. avg says I have no plugins for my email ~ should I try to download new plugins for my email & if so from where?violet{Mod Edit: Moved from HJT to AII~~boopme}

Welcome to Bleepin

You mention MBAM and AVG removing some of your programs, those would be programs you would be better off without, many free crapware programs come with spyware and furnish a backdoor for worse malware to install.

If your internet explorer is not working properly then that would usually indicate you are still infected, post that last MBAM log and update the program and run a new scan and post that log also

MBAM = Malwarebytes Antimalware

Hello Group,
One of my security scans identified and removed 2 Registry entries in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\

AntiVirusDisableNotify!=dword:0

and

AntiVirusOveride!=dword:0
Should I be worried about this? What do those entries indicate, and how did they get there?

Thanks,

Hello Jrwilson, Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
My name is fireman4it and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing.
Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean".
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply, unless they do not fit into the post.
I will be analyzing your log. I will get back to you with instructions.1.I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:1) False Alarms: When the anti virus ... Read more

My computer has been infected by a virus. It started with my computer telling me I was infected (pop ups) and directing me to their website. The virus prevents me from opening my Mcafee software. I also cannot do a system restore. I have tried but only get so far and it doesnt complete. I have tried this in safe mode with no luck. I have downoladed Malwarebytes to a usb mem stick and changed the .exe file to a fake name and ran the scan. It did find somethings but it didnt fix the problems. So I can still boot up but I cant access any antivirus websites and often the system hangs as I try different things and I reboot and try again without any luck. So I found this website and I thought I would give it a try. Am I a candidate for combofix /

Hi guys
inherited a laptop that had been given up on it due to several virus infections!
Laptop is a HP running windows 7 ultimate -
It had an antivirus "virus" on it -blocked everything i tried to run including blocking IE
i downloaded superantispy on a seperate pc onto a usb - but i was unable to run it on the pc (blocked it from loading) -so i went into safe mode and deleted the virus - rebooted and was able to run a full scan on superantispy
Felt like i had won as it came up with about 12 trojan viruses!, and a heap of other "potential riskes" -all were removed and i rebooted the laptop.
So the laptop is running so much better but when i connect to the web i still cant download any antivirus software -comes up with "download was stopped as it contains a virus" also i cant run Microsft Essentials - comes up with a warning "windows cannot access the specified path or file you may not have the appropriate permission to access the item"
Oddly I was able to run a free version of AVG -did a full scan which removed 3 threats - rebooted but still cant run MS Essentionals or download virus protection.
The laptop runs fine but i am pretty sure there is still a virus on there -anybody got any ideas from here? - my next move was going to be to reformat with the windows 7 disk and wipe the h/d but wanted to see if anyone had any ideas first
many thanks
Bill

So i tried to remove digital protection with malwarebyte, while I also had total vista security rogue anti virus as well. The problem was that total vista messed up some of my legit files so i deleted them such as a win32 file. After mawarebyte scan, I deleted some files, but then when i restarted my computer, I got some window saying i lost some data or something like that and windows will attempt to restore last date that my computer worked. So i let my computer restore my computer settings to an earlier date and then when I log back in, total vista and digital protection was removed?

I don't know if they are removed just from a system recovery, so i need some advice. After the recovery, I tried the instructions on deleting total vista, but when I renamed process explorer to iexplorer.exe, it doesn't open up, because my computer recognized it as illegal instructions.

EDIT:

So far i am having no pop ups of the rogue anti virus software, but are they hiding??

Hi Vay,I would suspect that the malware is still there, but hasn't had a chance to run yet. Unfortunately, it will probably pop up some time in the near future. However, if you aren't currently having any symptoms, that makes it easier to do the common scans that will probably remove the rogue for you.Start off by using TFC by Old Timer which will clean out any temp files that might be left over from the pre-restore infection.Follow this guide here on how to remove Digital Protection. Then:Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware FreeDouble-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation. An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program. If it will not start, go to Start > All Prgrams > SUPERAntiSpyware and click on Alternate Start. If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. I am working on the computer of one of my friends, who doesn't know much about computers. He told me he never updated windows, installed an anti-virus or any kind of ad-aware. I've spent most of my time updating his computer - downloading all the service packs and about 64 security updates. He literally never ran Windows update. He was clearly infected with Vundo due to millions of pop-ups on the start of any browser. I scanned his computer using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and removed the Vundo as well as 74 other infections. There are still issues with his computer, however. I tried installing AVG, but couldn't update its database, and all the scans would result in an AVG process terminating (the windows fatal error popup - the "Send/Don't Send" window) and then cause the whole scan to freeze. I uninstalled AVG, and installed the retail version of F-Secure. The same thing happened - couldn't update and the scan would freeze around 3/4 the way through. Even online scans would freeze (Housecall and Kaspersky). Also, an initial problem that caused my friend to have me help, was that his original profile for Windows was "corrupted" and he could only log on through a temporary profile. Since his original profile was password protected, he couldn't access his documents via the Temp profile. I created a new profile for him, but still can't access his Document folder nor can any of the programs I use scan them because they are "locked." I'm sure there are... Read more

First of all i would like to apologize if this topic is in wrong category, or it should not even be asked on this site. And second of all, please be patience i'm a noob looking for answers So whats all about? Well i'm meeting new terms here and i have no idea what they mean and what they do. And as anyone else i wanna be safe in this era of cyber-crime. So basically i know whats a anti-virus and a anti-spyware and that they can run together. Also i heard that 2 anti-virus don't do good but 2 anti-spyware do. So what i'm asking is, what is a anti-malware? Can a anti-malware, anti-virus, and anti-spyware run together? Could you suggest some good+free of those 3? Sorry for my bad English and being such a noob

A:Anti-malware, Anti-virus, Anti-spyware

Florin, you might take interest in this thread, though it may be quite a bit of reading: What's the Best Anti-virus?

It is there that they discuss all kinds of different antiviruses and coupled security software. I personally only use Microsoft Security Essentials, but I have used it along with Malwarebytes for added security in the past.

Basically, you could have your system completely locked down with lots of extra security, but in some cases it becomes a hassle because of how much your computer becomes protected and overly secured. If you prefer a speedy computer over security, generally you use less security software, but if it is the other way around, you will want beefier security software which may slow things down slightly. That link I've provided will have most everything you will need.

Yesterday afternoon, I received an email with a word document attached to it that was supposedly someone's resume. As soon as I opened the document, I noticed my corporate anti-virus (Vipre) kicked in and quarantined two trojans. I ran a deep scan using Vipre and rebooted my computer.

This morning, when I signed in, I noticed another trojan was quarantined which made me think that the virus did not get completely removed. At this point, I downloaded Malware Bytes, ran a scan and it removed a trojan as well. I rebooted, ran another scan with Malware Bytes and everything has been quiet so far, but I'm still suspicious that I might be infected still.

I am using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
