Preferred Solution: virus/malware blocks icons to open, can't open help and support, run command

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'd attempted to install XP Service Pack 3 via Windows Update. An error message occurred halfway through (can't remember the exact message at the moment) and the installation failed. The computer was fine after this and I continued to work on it until I shut it down.

The next day I booted up to find that all my desktop and quick launch shortcuts and desktop files had lost their icons. All shortcuts now have the extention .lnk. Nothing happens when I double click on any of files. This is also the case in the Start menu, where all program shortcuts don't work and neither does Settings -> Control Panel. I also cannot open any folders on my desktop, including My Computer.

I managed to open up the command prompt through Task Manager and I've been able to navigate to programs and execute them from there so I know the programs still work. This is the only way I've been able to get online and run programs to try to solve this. I can also open Windows Explorer via command prompt and navigate through folders that way.

Things I've tried:

1. I'd created a System Restore point before attempting the Service Pack installation. Ran System Restore through command prompt in the hope of restoring back to that point but there are no restore points available.
2. Ran an AVG scan. Found nothing untoward.
3. Ran HijackThis. Not an expert by any means on this but it didn't appear to show anything alarming.
4. My hours of searching online led me to Doug Knox'... Read more

Hi, I am having a weird problem. I cannot change what programs I use by defualt to open windows files. It does not matter whether I right click on a certain file and choose open with or if I use the tools option in the folder menu. This is what happens. I want to open a .jpg file with picassa photo viewer. I right click the .jpg file and choose open with. I then click browse to locate the .exe file that will open it. Well once I click it I get sent back to the open with window and nothing has changed. The .jpg file will not open with any program that can open it and it will not add the .exe file into the window. This is a bit frustrating as I cannot change what opens certain windows files by default. This goes for any type of file I try to open with any program. Any ides fellas? Any help would be awesome. A:Hjt Log; Virus; Can Only Open Files In Safe/command Line Mode

I have read the list of things that should be done to a hijacked computer before you post a HJT log but the only item on that list that the computer is able to do is to run HTJ from the command prompt (only in "safe mode with command prompt", not even from normal "safe mode"). I just recently upgraded from office 2003 to office 2007. I used to be able to right click a text file and use "open with" to open it in excel. Since the upgrade I am no longer able to do that. It simply displays the hourglass briefly and then nothing. I can open the excel program and choose open from the menu to open this type of file but I would like to understand why it is behaving this way and how I can reenable the open with excel from the right click menu. I have tried to select a program and then browse to the excel.exe but it doesn't help and I have tried to uninstall and then reinstall the entire office suite and it didn't make a difference. any suggestions? After selecting the internet for when I want to open the interent, it says it has "stopped working correctly. Windows will close the program and noify you if a solution is available". My internet is working and this problem is preventing me from downloading applications such as Spotify.

A:Please help! Cannot open I.E. possible due to a virus or malware

I have read your policy on posting on other forums as well as TSF and getting mixed advice and confusing matters, so I have refrained from doing so. However I need to get advice on how to fix my problem asap, and it has been nearly 10 hours since my original post.

As it is my first time using TSF I have no idea roughly how long to wait for a reply. I don't mean to seem impatient but it seems some threads on the forum get sorted straight away and others seem to go unanswered. It has just gone midnight here and I need to try and get my internet back up and working by tomorrow morning, and I am increasingly worried about the safety of my PC.

If anyone could reply and let me know where I stand that would be fantastic, I have never had a problem with my PC that I don't know how to fix before and this one is really worrying me!

Thanks again.

Ok, here is the deal. A friend dropped off his desktop because it "doesn't work anymore" So I fire it up and it boots fine, now to the XP home login screen where his and all of his familys (5 total) logins are password protected except 1. He states that he or anyone else has not password protected the logins and it just started happening when all the other problems started. So in other words no passwords available. So I try to login to the 1 open account. The account loads, but the the mouse goes in the opposite direction it supposed to (messed up, but manageable), it also will not do anything when you click on anything. Left or right click, cannot tab thru selections nothing, keyboard is disabled also. So for S&G, I switch out the keyboard and mouse to no avail. Ok enough of this.....I boot into safe mode, and get logged into the Admin, mouse and keyboard are working (kinda) I can open the start menu, windows explorer and navigate, open control panel, but when you click on any program you get a quick hourglass and then nothing. Same goes with any icon on the desk top. I try to open regedit, cmd, user accounts, all thinks for a second then nothing happens. I plug in my flash drive that contains all the antivirus/antimalware/antispyware programs recommended (which works on other PCs), but when I try to execute or install any of them, again nothing happens.I have been able to do 2 things that gives me hope I still can fix this PC. 1. Looks like I got a virus on my home pc?not sure when or where, all I know is yesterday I got a few popups while online, just on regular sites. So I tried to open the Malware Bytes Anti-Malware software I downloaded last year, which is fantastic at getting rid of trojans and etc. But get this ? the program wouldn?t open! Even right clicking and clicking ?open? didn?t work, nor did right clicking and clicking ?open as.? And what?s worse ? none of the programs on the desktop will open, ie Spybot Spyware Removal, Ad Aware, etc. Even going into the C drive and finding the actual folder and clicking from there, it still won?t open.I found this online scan place ? Trend Micro Housecall. It scanned my PC for 4 hours?I let it run overnight. I woke up and checked it ? it had found 15 instances, with a few trojans (some of which appeared to be Ad Aware features). I clicked ?remove all? and it ran for another hour or so. I was asleep but my wife saw it when it finished ? she said the result said ?some malware could not be removed.?Anyway?she browsed online after that and didn?t get any popups or anything. But programs ? apparently ONLY spy/malware/virus-detecting programs ? will still not open!Another clue that I?m infected: if I do a Google search, the results display in a super large font, which happened the last time I was infected.I found this list of online scanning software:http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=11168Does anyone think any of these ... So, I downloaded something and got a ton of Malware and viruses. I am going through and cleaning out what I can, but I have this one problem that I'm so far, unable to solve involving my computer opening up new pages of my default browser without me being around. and when I say open, I mean that it will either open a new tab or a new window without warning. I uninstalled almost everything non-essnetial, and I went through and deleted all the files for programs that wouldn't uninstall, and I still can't figure it out.

It works on the default browser at the time. I know this because I uninstalled my Google Chrome thinking that would solve it, but then it started to do the same thing with internet explorer. Anyone have any suggestions?

Can anyone tell me how to check that or any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try restoring your Proxy settings as it is likely they were modified by the malware. To do this:

In Internet Explorer: Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" and check to "Automatically detect settings".

In Firefox: Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Select "Settings" under Connection. Select "Use system proxy settings".

An AVG window popped up on my screen yesterday telling me it had found a problem, listed all these filepaths with the virus, then a 2nd window popped up and told me i should quarantine a problem file, i don't recall the exact words but it had 'Malware' in the title. I did as it said (im no IT expert and trusted AVG) and quarantined the 'Malware' file. It shut all my open windows down, namely IE, and I then couldn't open anything! I restarted my laptop but still nothing works. It won't let me run AVG, Defender, open Adobe, I can't even create a restore point. I am on a dongle so the 'safe mode w/networking' doesnt work.

Will backing up my photos & then resetting my entire laptop back to factory default setting solve the issue?

The only thing that does work (& is surprisingly quicker than normal) is internet explorer.

Somebody please help me

A:My virus wont let me open my antivirus software, or open certain programs.

Not knowing what OS you're using makes this possibly not applicable, but if it's Windows 10:

An offline scan, if you can trigger it, runs before the OS is loaded and can nuke things that cannot be touched once the OS is loaded and the virus/malware is active.

Thank you in advance for any info you might provide.
My problem is this. I have had a fine running clean machine running Win Xp Media Edition. I was running Avast free edition but seem to have contracted something while surfing blogs that caused 75 or so window browser to open automatically. In addition, it causes flashing cursers and flashing addresses in browser address field and flashing toolbar. When I reboot now, it opens anywhere from 50 tp 150 windows plus the other flashing problems I described. The process of my machine opening these windows and me closing them taps all resources and it takes me 30 mintutes or so to regain control of my machine. Eventually it runs ok after the battle against these windows.
I have removed AVAST and tried AVG to no avail. Finally I am now on Norton. I removed each program so I only had one anti virus running at anytime but none recognized the threat. I udated the virus database for each previous to running.
I followed your steps before my post here with the exception of Panda. It gave me udate errors depsite having my anti-virus turned off as instructed.
I am not a computer expert but tried to follow your directions meticulously.
Thanks for any help!!!

Hello Lee and Welcome -
First please remove Spybot S&D fully as it is not required, and program scans are limited.
Is there a decent (even free) Antivirus program installed ??

Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/
* Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
* If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
* A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
* If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
* Do not reboot until instructed.
* If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
NOTE - If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.
When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.
NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

Important: Do not reboot your computer until you complete the next step.

Hello,

I have a friend's laptop with me and it's got a virus or some sort of malware on it.

Basically, there are random popups telling me that there is a virus on my computer, from a antivirus software that was never installed on the laptop.

I attempted to run my normal antivirus software, AVG, but all i get is an error message that says:

Application cannot be executed. The file [....] is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software.

This happens on pretty much ANY application I attempt to run.

I can't access anything without getting that error message. I've tried various applications such as System Config, Command Prompt, Windows Media Player, Trojan Remover.

I also attempted to run DDS and GMER on the laptop but they are stopped also with that error message, so I am unable to produce any logs for you to analyse. My apologies for that.

Is there any way you can help?

The laptop is running Windows XP SP2 I believe. I can't check because the virus isn't letting me.

Thanks

Try running the tools in Safe Mode: Restart your computer.
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, start pressing the F8 key.
In some systems, this may be the F5 key.

- all other browser work fine ... chrome, firefox
- I have taken IE off the machine by turning off IE in windows services via uninstall programs, rebooted and ran ccleaner, then re-enabled IE...still cannot download and save files
- I have rest IE...still same issue.

The only thing other thing I have found online regarding this is that IE may have lost it admin rights or something like that. have any of you ran across this issue before?

A:After virus removal IE not able to open save or open files from the web.

Hello lawrance,
Generally this is my full I.E. Reset directions >>
This should be done with Internet Explorer open (even if you are having problems with it), not Firefox / Chrome or another browser.

Click Tools or the Gear icon at the top of the browser > Go down the list to click on Internet Options > Go across to the last tab that should be Advanced >  Click on Advanced and then Reset (near the bottom) > You should get a Confirm box pop up > Tick Delete Personal Settings and now Reset.
This last part may be where the infection changed things -

While there > Go back to Connections Tab, and down to LAN Settings. Open this and check that the only box ticked is Automatically Detect Settings, and untick any others. Click OK >Apply if you changed anything and OK again.

Back to the General Tab and make sure your Home Page is entered correctly in the box. Re-set it if not, clock Apply and OK to close out
Once the settings have all been reset, Close that box. Close any other open boxes. Now close I.E. and Reboot your computer.

Let us know if this helped -

Ok, after checking for a virus I've found that what's causing the popup in all my browsers is some sort of virus in a router. If I change to another connection the popup doesn't show anymore. Now the real question is: How this works, I mean, show popups in MY browser without a virus in the computer? Is it redirecting the traffic to another server? Is it DNS related? Can someone enlighten me please?

A:Popup advertisement in every tab I open, many anti-virus/malware found nothing!

Time ago I had to deal with something similar with some routers where the DNS servers were changed by some malware/virus.
Take a look at the router settings, take note of the DNS addresses in there (so later you can investigate), and change them to your preferred ones (OpenDNS, Google DNS...)
You can also look for firmware updates (to fix vulnerabilities) and change the default settings (router's password).

Hello Vista Smart Community,
I have a problem with a stupid malware virus on my Window Vista laptop (x32). This is the typical malware virus (system tools) that pops multiple windows telling me that my PC is infected with viruses and then is asking me to pay them (ransom scam). In the past I was able to fix the issue by going to safe mode and then fixing the proxy on my IE and then downloading legitimates virus killer. This time, is a little harder for me to kill this virus. This time the virus is not allowing me to open IE at all in safe mode and is using ?Window Vista security center? as the name versus the other know names. Can someone please help me figure out how to kill this Malware when I cannot access IE?

Give these programs a shot at it.

Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.
After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.

download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.

ANYONE that recognizes these symptons please help me IDENTIFY this infection!
I plugged a friends Seagate Expansion drive (SRD00F1) into my machine's usb port and Windows Vista started to load the drivers and then stopped. I went to My Computer and the machine can't see the drive at all. After this I started to see the following occurring:
1) All the normal column names in Explorer are gone, Author is the only one showing. All of the common ones are unavailable when I try to choose details by right clicking the column header, Filename, Date Created/Created, Size etc...
2) Many windows won't open, specifically Control Panel windows like "Backup and Restore Center" and System.
3) Explorer shows no filenames or folder names.
4) The "Start Search" feature of the Start Bar returns nothing.
5) In My computer the sizes of the drives and free space are in bytes, not KB or MB.

It seems like some rootkit, but I can't figure out which one, the external drive that caused the infection hasn't been used in months, so it can't be something brand new.
Any assistance on identifying this infection and removing it would be greatly appreciated.

I've been working on a Small Business 2003 server all week troubleshooting intermittent connectivity problems to Exchange and Internal web site. Both are running on that server, and there are about 15 other pc's on the network. They are showing the same signs of a virus. I cannot access microsoft or update sites, cannot access antivirus or malware fix sites, and have to rename some fix programs to get them to run.
I've run virus scans and malware scans. Both found viruses and malware. After they are clean, it finds the same virus again the next day. Other pcs on the network have the same issues. They can get to most websites just fine. Hosts file is ok, and dns seems to be ok.
I have not run HijackThis yet, I lost my remote access and am travelling on-site tomorrow. I will re-run scans on the server and disconnect all pcs from the network and run on each machine. I have 3 programs that i'd like to run on the server and all PCs: ClamWin Antivirus, HiJackThis, WinSockXPFix, and Dial-a-fix. I believe that these will fix my problem. I will post an HJThis log here tomorrow afternoon and see if there is something I am missing. This one is a bear, i have cleaned many systems before and this is one of the worst i've seen so far.

ClamAntivirus did find worm_downad.ad and worm.kido-18.
MalwareBytes also found a few items.
I'd like to run combofix, but it wont run on SBS2003.

I think there is another issue as well, because the system is being hammered by... Read more

Hi, i've recently been experiencing some issues with internet connectivity and a few other random problems that have been occurring with my computer that i believe are being caused by spyware or some sort of virus.
My system specs are - i am running windows XP professional, Service pack 3,
2.4 ghz quadcore pentium processor with 2 gigs of ram. I am on a wireless internet connection provided by comcast. Both the other computers (a powerbook and a desktop running on vista) don't have any problems. However my internet connection, although connected, is really really slow. takes about 5 minutes for any site to load up.

In addition to that, i couldnt get malwarebytes anti malware to start up. so i deleted it and tried to reinstall, but i cant even run the install file. Spybot S&D wont start either. I can access everything but the actual main window. I uninstalled and reinstalled this successfully but there were no changes.

Also, every time i start up my computer, i get a registry change message from spybot saying there is an added value to a macromedia folder in my local settings folder. i've been denying this change every time

Alright. so i wrote a fricking novel, but hopefully someone can provide me some answers. It would be MUCH appreciated. I have a few projects on hold at the moment that need to be finished by the end of the week

Here is my hijack this log :

Hi

I am new to this forum. I am having a major issues with my pc. First its all started when the malware paytime.exe attacked my pc. It turned off my firewall(SP2 Firewall), real-time virus scanner(Trend microoffice client, not using its firewall, provided by my service provider). With the help of hijackthis, spybot and ewido and also the interent , able to delete paytime.exe and its related files.
To this I entered in safe mode.

Now I am able to control my firewall. Thats the only success BUT when I click nvmixer.exe in my taskbar, it shows visual C++ runtime error and my virus scanner is saying that officescan client has not started. So in control panel I entered in administrative tools and tried manually to start real time scan process but I failed again. It shows cannot start this process in safe mode. The same thing is repeated for other processes like error reporting etc. I am booting in normal mode only but its showing cant run in safe mode.

For runtime error I tried to download visual runtime files from support.microsoft, I failed to do so. My browser doesnt open sites of microsoft. When I typed support.microsoft.com, Page cannot display error is coming. I even disabled my firewall still it doesnt works.

Could you tell me how to make my process start again? And is there any program that will tell me about missing dlls if any(presently there are no dialogs of missing dlls). And about my browser security settings?

I also present you the log of the hijackthis.

Sometimes when viruses are cleaned out the process damages system files etc too. I'd suggest starting with a sfc and then if no go run a 'repair' (this installs os over itself and retains data but you'll have to re-do updates).

Hi everybody

I picked up some nasty malware. AVG was updating and suddenly everything just fell apart.

I can't run any installation programs regardless of the extension or name. I've tried to install Rkill and MalwareBytes with absolutely no luck. It defaults to needing to be unblocked in the properties and no matter what compatibility mode I use it will not run. I get a 1084 error when I try to open the security center. In the taskbar I have an Action Center alert that says 1 Important Message and 3 Total Messages. The Action Center will not open at all. I do not have access to a USB key as I am not home, but I will be Tuesday evening. Any help would be infinitely appreciated.

Other notes I forgot: I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, and I am constantly getting errors that Windows can't load and needs to be repaired. It runs and restarts, sometimes being repaired and other times not.

Thanks a lot
Jared

A:Action center won't open, Internel Explorer only browser that will open, no MalwareBytes and RKill will not open

An update.

I've tried running MalwareBytes and RKill from a flash drive which is also not working. Windows also ends up unable to load, the startup repair runs and things work fine. Not long after Windows tries to update and then it becomes unable to load again and the startup repair runs again.

I tried running a registry fix for the .exe problem and I get an error stating that the registry is being used even when no programs are running and I am in safe mode.

Hope this information helps
thanks
Jared

I have searched and do everything on fixing the registry, but still I can't open the CMD by right click in a folder and choose "open command window here."
The windows says: "THis file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install or if one is installed already..."
Please help me.
THanks

A:Can't open cmd through "open command window here"

Hello opticaldh, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if using step 1 in the tutorial below may be able to help fix this by restoring it's default registry entries.Open Command Window Here - Add or Remove
If not, then download and merge the .reg file for the listed .exe option may be able to. It will restore the default associations for .exe files.Default File Type Associations - Restore
Afterwards, if you like, the tutorial can have you be able to use "Open command window here" without having to press Shift first.Open Command Window Here - Add or Remove Shift + Right Click
Hope this helps,
Shawn
