Cant Collect Information: System Information problem

Q: Cant Collect Information: System Information problem

"Cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation Software. Windows management files may be moved or missing"

This is the error that i get when accessing system information built into the system tools.!!

Any solutions for the above problem??Thanks for any kind of help in advance....

Preferred Solution: Cant Collect Information: System Information problem

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I start System Information (msinfo32.msc) it gives me, in the info panel, the following message:
Can't collect information
Cannot access the Windows Management Information software. Windows Mangement files might be moved or missing.

I checked if the WMI service is not disabled (it is automatically started, the default).

In Microsoft Mangement Console, under Services and Application, I have WMI Control. R-click, properties, and:
Failed to connect to <local computer>
because "Interface: class not registered"

What can i do?

I need some help please

When I go to system tools and then system information I get a message

I hope that shows up but if not this is what it says.

Can't collect information

Access denied to windows management instrumentation server on this computer. Have an administrator your access permission.
But I am supposed to be the only person on this computer. I have admin rights.

I also cannot pull up this same information when I go to dell.com where I bought the computer. It tells me it cannot find the service number. I have done both of these things before but now I am not able too.

Any ideas? Thank you for any help in advance.

A:Can't collect information (system info winxp)

i just tried on XP - worked OK - are you admin - to check goto control panel - user accounts - and see what your username is set to..... I'm set to administrator.

maybe also with windows explorer see if you can open all the document settings user accounts....If your denied access then you are not set up as admin...

When I went to go check on my System Information, it came up with this error:

"Can't Collect Information. Cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation software. Windows Management files may be moved or missing"

I did go check to see if the three services (Event Log, Windows Management Instrumentation, and Remote Procedure Call (RPC)) started, as Microsoft support says, and checking under Services, etc, it did say they had started.

Also, I'm not sure if this would go with this problem or if it's a completely different problem. My computer, I noticed, has been slower than usual. I am going to try Defragmenter tomorrow to see if that will help.

I'm not quite sure what to do, if anyone can help, it would really be greatly appreciated.

Nevermind, I found a solution on another forum. Just had to back up the Repository file (which saved that to desktop) then deleted the contents of the file before restarting, and it worked.

Run MSINFO.EXE results in "Can't Collect Information
Cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation software.
Windows Management files may be moved or missing"

Ran Services.MSC and checked that:
a) Event Log running
b) Remote Procedure Call running
c) Windows Management Instrumentation stopped

Restarted WMI but this resulted in message box advising that:
Windows Management Instrumentation started and then stopped.
Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do.

MSINFO works perfectly happily on my other machine but I can see no reason for it to curtail its function in this instance.

Hi, I apologize in advance if I'm in the wrong place, just a lonely ranger looking for answers on the grand www, will appreciate redirects, thank you.

I'm a DevOps at a small cellular provider, in charge of the infrastructure of the internet service for mobiles.

We have a couple of Cisco 7206 routers running as GGSNs, and I'm trying to get the data (not voice) session info sorted out for billing needs. specifically, amount of in/output of octats or bytes for each mobile session. I've tried a few accounting methods with an external RADIUS server to no avail - there're a lot of great tutorials for login accounting and voice CDR accounting out there, but little in the way of mobile data recording/accounting.

I get logs on the RADIUS for users+passwords logging into the router, but no IMSI/PDP-contexts/GPT information of any kind.

After a long search I added the gprs charging function to my config:

gprs default charging-gateway [RADIUS server ip]

still nothing on the external RADIUS server.

My questions are:

1. Is something just missing on the 7206 config? if so what can it be? Is RADIUS the right tool on the server side to collect the info I need?

2. Am I way off track? What would be the best way to get records of the amount of data per session?

3. Should I be looking for this info on a different piece of the infrastructure?

Many thanks and again, if I've strayed into the wrong place, will greatly appreciate a redirection.

Welcome Bob, from another Englishman, to the forum.

If you have MS Office you can access system info through the help menu. Go to help -> About then click on system information.

You might not have permission to view the info, are you the sole user of the machine? Look in Control Panel -> Users to see the profiles available and the permissions. You have to have admisistrator privileges to change the profiles though.

So far I've spent about two weeks now trying to fix this ... If anyone can help me out with this one it would be deeply appreciated.

It has not been -simple- so far ....

When I select the System Information function off of the
accessories\system tools menu I get a window that says "Can't collect information access denied to Windows Management Instrumentation server on this computer. Have an administrator change your access permissions" and it doesn't give me any info on this computer hardware, software or anything for that matter. Everything shows up blank or unknown under System Information.

This is my own Windows XP - Home edition and I always sign on, as far as I know, as an administrator. I've tried about a hundred ways to eliminate that window and have tried everything from changing account permissions after safe booting, tried resetting items in the registry,
tried booting in safe mode and still can't get that System Information function to work without showing that "can't collect information .... etc ..." screen.

I've read other messages from people in the newsgroups who had the this same problem but there has never been any answer to it that did work. (that I saw anyway) I hope that I can find a way to elimate that window from having to re-install XP. Maybe there -was- an answer to that problem listed and I missed it.

It was suggested on another newsgroup that I download a program called AIDA32 which does the... Read more

Hi there.

I've got an HP m9350f using an NVIDIA GeForce GT240 (the factory gfx card died on me, and this is the replacement Fry's gave me.)

Ever since my computer crashed summer of 2010 (leading to a new hard drive, fresh OS installation, and a new gfx card,) I've been unable to play any of my Valve titles; they simply crash before loading. In seeking support with Valve, I was asked to generate a WMI report (by typing "msinfo32" in a Run prompt.) Doing so, the window pops open to display the following:Can't collect information.
Cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation software. Windows Management files may be missing or moved.
Quick note: when trying to determine my specs while signing up at this website, I noticed that the Control Panel > System page lists my Processor and Memory as "Not available." I've had this problem since maybe August of 2010 (life stuff came up and I couldn't address it at the time.) I'm not sure when exactly it started as I didn't notice the WMI problem until troubleshooting the games, and I didn't try to play the games for quite some time after installation.

Until this is resolved, I can go no further with Valve's troubleshooting. They provided a few cursory tips and some relevant links, but none of them panned out. So far, I have tried the following:

creating new wbemrepository (?)
this was Valve's first suggestion, and it's covered herebooting in safe moderunning system repair

After much searching, I've found a fix for Can't collect information problem. Follow the directions below and your problem will be solved in 5 minutes.

You must add "SERVICE" to the administrators group. This will give permissions back to the system to access the WMI classes as well as allowing MSINFO32 to access them.

Two ways to do this:

Simple / Long way (Vista Business, Enterprise, Ultimate users only):
Access the MMC (microsoft management console) by right clicking on "My Computer" and select "Manage."
In the window that appears, along the left hand column, select "Local Users and Groups."
The center window will now show a listing of groups and users on the computer. Click the Groups Tab to open it up.
Double click Administrators to add a a user to the group.
Press the "Add" button at the bottom of the new window.
The window that follows allows you to add users and services to the administrator group. MAKE SURE THE BOX TITLED "From this Location" LISTS YOUR COMPUTER NAME AND not YOUR DOMAIN. If it isn't your computer name, Press the "Locations" button and select your computer. We want to add a LOCAL (ie, your computer) service to the group.
In the bottom box, titled "Enter the object names to select," type SERVICE.
Press the "Check Names" button and it should verify the name is correct.
Press the "Ok" button on the all windows to get bac... Read more

Hello friends!

I am working with Windows XP SP2. I am facing a problem in accessing the folder alled "Syatem Volume Information". I found this folder in all the drives of my HDD, but whenever I click in any of them using Windows Explorer, I get an error saying "System Volume Information is not accessable, Access is denied".

I have disabled the System Restore feature and I guess this folder is used to store files of System Restore. Even after disabling System Restore, there are files left in this folder which is using a good amount of my HDD space.

Please tell me as to how can I access the contents of this folder and is it safe to delete whatever is in that folder. Moreover, as I already disabled the system restore feature, is there a way to completely remove this folder.

Thank you.

A:Solved: Problem to access System Volume Information Folder?

Yes, the SVI (System Volume Information) folder is where SR (System Restore) restore points are stored. SR will place a SVI folder on every partition it sees. This will include external hard drives and some flash drives. There is no way to permanently remove the SVI folder, other than hiding the partition with 3ed party partitioning software. Normally disabling SR empties the SVI folder.

Here are instruction on how to access the SVI folder.

If the Indexing Service is turned on you will see a catalog.wci folder in the SVI folder.

also id like to remind if your system is totally messed and full of useless crap etc. 0.4 ghz wont change much about the speed.

i noticed this with my last setup is it boots up into desktop in about 30-40 secons from reset-point.. and when using a 1200+ instead of a 2600+ it doesnt take veeeeery much longer.

and well.. higher is not always faster.. have you checked the cpu temperatures since overclocking?

Good morning.

I get a "insufficient virtual memory" occasionally when I try to print some color pictures.

The pc is an older Pent 2 300 megahertz with XP just recently installed.

I printed out a page listing the systems memoriy capabilities and need an explanation of :

Total physical memory 64mb
Total virtual memory213.16 mb
Available virtual memory 33.51 mb

I've assumed, possibly incorrectly, that I need to order mofr "modules" from Crucial.com to add to the 64 mb presently

I emailed Crucial with copy of systems' "innards" using Belarc and they returned a reply showing several module sizes from which I am to select one.

If this is the "fix" I need, will the least expensive(64 mb) be adequate for simple home use needs...i.e..printing

Hi there

I have just recently done a full wipe of my hard-drive with Windows Vista x32 'Ultimate' on it and came across this issue in reguards of my 'RAM (Memory)' being lower than what it shows when I boot my computer up. I have 8gb RAM in which hasn't been tampered with, and ran fine before the reinstall of my OS took place and now, both System Information and Diaxlog show my RAM as *2302mb* which I am totally confused about :/

Here is my log from Diaxlog:

Operating System: Windows Vista™ Ultimate (6.0, Build 6000) (6000.vista_gdr.080917-1612)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: NVIDIA
System Model: NFORCE 780i SLI
BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9450 @ 2.66GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.7GHz
Memory: 2302MB RAM
Page File: 822MB used, 3989MB available
Windows Dir: C:\Windows
DirectX Version: DirectX 10
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
DxDiag Version: 6.00.6000.16386 32bit Unicode
Any idea what may have caused this, or even so, can it be fixed? I would really apreciate information posted rather than be sent to websites to add to the confusion haha.
