Access to my PC from a Linux server on the LAN.

Q: Access to my PC from a Linux server on the LAN.

Hi,

On my LAN, I have two Windows 7 PCs and a Linux server.  I am just learning about Linux, and my intention is to rebuild it after I figure out how to build it to my liking.

I need some help setting it up, and had someone on Odesk log on with its root password to set up.  They logged on, however, later said they couldn't do the work.  As I said, I will rebuild the server, so I am not concerned about anything on it.  I am concerned about the two Windows PCs.  Should I be concerned? What could I do to investigate?

Thank you

Preferred Solution: Access to my PC from a Linux server on the LAN.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Weird one. I've got two Dell Precision workstations on a workgroup. PC1 has been having network problems (connection randomly drops off) so have used the Vista CD to replace ntoskrnl.exe which seemed to be causing the problem. It's now back and can access the internet fine, plus I can get to the setup pages for the router (192.168.1.xx) and the Qnap server (also 192.168.x.xx). BUT: it can't actually *access* either the server, nor the other PC, in Windows Explorer. The Qnap was mapped as the Z drive, and it just can't find it.

The REALLY odd thing is that from PC 2 (which is working fine), I can access PC 1 and all the drives & files on it that are shared. Using PC 2 I just successfully copied something from PC1's D drive across to the server. From PC1 I can't even see the server. Any ideas?

A:2 Vista x64 PCs, 1 linux server. Both PCs can access net, only PC2 can see devices?

Also. I can access the files on the server via FTP from PC1. (This is great, but isn't a fix, as I need to be able to map it as a drive.)

Currently we are on an NT network with a few 2000 servers tossed in. Today I learned that the plan is to migrate everything to Linux. Lets assume that this only applies to the servers and that the users will still operate with 98/nt/2000/xp. What are your thoughts on this?

I put this in this forum for a reason. Because I'd rather get the advice from 2000 and 2003 experts who know what Linux cannot replace than to hear the Linux fanboys and anti-Microsoft activists praise it to the high heavens.

What would your concerns be if this was done on your network? What problems have you encountered if you'd tried this? Or what successes? Know of any businesses that have done this successfully?

Hi all
Have been a LONG LONG user of Linux as a server (hosting VM's XP / W7 mix) and file / print sharing.

I used to avoid MS like the plague as far as SERVER environments are concerned - probably because my first experince was Windows NT (Windows NeanderThal or Windows No Thanks) which was SO HORRIBLE that it put me off Windows servers for ages.

(Note I'm using a server in a HOME environment where we have around 8 machines (most of which are actually mine for testing -- not a corporate environment which has other considerations).

The problem now with the latest Linux distros that they are trying to be "A Better Windows than Windows". You can of course customize them but I haven't got the time or patience to do this any more. To select what packages to install / leave out now is a 100% pain and if you do it wrong the chances are the system will give errors.

I've looked at the new SUSE 11.2 -- slick and polished - bit I don't NEED "an alternative Windows".

I've just been looking at Windows Server 2008 R2 (got it from Technet) and I'm REALLY IMPRESSED with it so far. I've installed the STANDARD version - you don't need datacenter or Enterprise version for a home server.

It runs vmware server on it just fine (although I might go the whole hog and use the Hyper-V virtualisation -- need to do a bit more research).

I'm quite happy letting MS do the updates than having to mess around with Kernel compiles etc.

Incidentally as a HOME server there ... Read more

A:installing xp/linux via server..

d21deepesh,

Sitting at a single machine?? Not likely. The concept is to have a server with the base build you wish to deploy. A PXE Server (pronounced 'pixie') is what you ideally wish to use.

Each machine you wish to build will be pointed to the server. On boot, the machine connects to the server and installs the image.

A:Hooking up two isp's to one linux server

Just to confirm you have a Linux server with two external network cards each connected to a different ISP. When both are working you want to load balance between the two and when one goes down there should be nothing noticable and all traffic should go via the other one

Knowing the exact version of Linux and a bit more on the setup would be beneficial (I'm assuming something Debian based, with the two network cards connected to two routers) but do they have Static IPs or what.

I mean take a look at this in the meantime http://lartc.org/howto/lartc.rpdb.multiple-links.html for statics and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=834352 for dynamics

For specific applications you've got:

Shorewall - http://www.shorewall.net/ which supports load balancing but not fallover
Backroute - http://www.epr.ch/brb/linux/backroute.php which supports fallover but not load balancing.

If you have any problems with this or want more info let me know.

A:Linux Server issues

FC needs to be configured for NETWORKING and to enable it during boot
(it should be the /etc/rc.d/init.d/network script)
enter:
find /etc/rc.d -name \*network\* -printand you'll get the boot script names for networking:
the Sxxnetwork is the script which will config and bring up the ethernet
and Kxxnetwork is used to shut it down

btw: /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd is my Apache boot script

From the root login, enter /etc/rc.d/init.d/network status to verify
that you have the ethernet scripts and the interfaces are known.

The MB:Asus P4800SE should not be an issue, but the ethernet NIC and the

I have a web script to test out. After much searching I tried to find a free web host just to test the script before further development. It requires cron, which a windows server does not support, from my understanding.
I looked into setting my PC as a linux server instead, so I downloaded VMware to set up Ubuntu and try a server from that to test script and share the development folder between windows and linux.

Is it possible though to run a server in VMware (or other virtual pc) to be able to connect in windows, need to test in both IE and firefox eventually.

I did try set-up ubuntu on VMware, though GNOME fails to start and the cursor becomes unresponsive to both the VMware and in windows, requiring a restart of the system.

Does ubuntu have server software to run cron? I was told that's all that's needed.

I don't want to dual boot, not on my current PC anyway, but is there anything I can do to work with linux within, or with windows?
I did get linux to work in MS virtual PC, so may try that again, was very slow though, suppose the extra RAM will make the difference however.

I could pay for hosting for cron to save time, but I just want to try it out, develop a little maybe, see if I find it interesting to work with, so paid hosting just does not seem worth it.

Ubuntu does indeed have a server software. Go to http://www.ubuntu.com/products/WhatIsUbuntu/serveredition

Hi there

I know loads of people here use NAS boxes one way or another.
I'm torn between getting a standard NAS box or using a home build Linux headless server for similar --using Linux LVM makes creating Logical data spaces out of multiple physical HDD's a doddle.

NAS advantage - purpose built - ready to go from the Off.

Disadvantage -- proprietary file systems and OS (QNAP for instance) -- difficult to add applications and support for Wireless (Wifi) usually problematic as well as one-off operations such as copying files to the NAS from external USB's.
Difficult to maintain / upgrade --for example if you start with a two HDD system adding more HDD's is difficult unless you initially bought a NAS with more bays.

Linux advantage --Free easily fixeable and maintainable OS where Networking WORKS, can add as many volumes as I like, can add applications such as PLEX for multi-media serving, VMware / VBOX / ZEN / KVM so I could have a Windows VM also running on it, easy to control via remote access.

Disadvantage -- Have to self build -- means messing around with cases, power supplies etc -- probably hard to get a decent system into a very small box.

I have plenty of Linux experience --would probably use CENTOS for the server as it's really robust (is the open source of Reds Hat's very successful enterprise server used on zillions of server farms etc) but zero experience in the use / maintenance and operation of NAS type boxes.

Out of interest, I use a rasberry pi 2 with plex as a media server. A bit choppy when transcoding but works great on hd mp4 files that do not need transcoding.

Hi all,

I'm currently studying a certificate in Linux/Unix and I have to compile a report that requires me to "select the hardware and software components to build a Suse 10.1 Linux Server to run as a domain server to support 100 connections from Windows Vista/7 workstations. The hardware and software of the server can not exceed $5000".

Basically I'm studying the course remotely and by correspondence so I'm teaching myself, which makes it very difficult.

I'm to:

1. List the hardware and software components and detail the models and brand names for the server.

2. Explain to confirm the compatability for the combination of motherboard and O/S, processor and motherboard, network card and SUSe operating system, SATA II hard disks and motherboard.

3. List version and name of server application and explain why the application can support 100 Vista/7 workstations.

4. Name version and type of software to use on Windows Vista/7 workstations in order to connect to the server and briefly explain config steps.

5. Prepare cost summary for the Linux server application and client access (Vista/7) licences.

I'm just putting this out there in case any of you may be able to help me or lead me in the right direction. I'm assuming for some this understanding may be relativiely easy, but for myself it is quite confusing.

Any help would be much appreciated. I've also posted this in Linux section of the board.

Assuming you already have set up the internet connection on the server..

To share the internet connection you have to set up IP masquerading. If you need proxying too, set up Squid.

Doing either of these is not trivial and explaining it would need a full-length guide which I am not goin g to write. You can search the web for those keywords for some guides and howtos.

OK so I've pinched the old mans ancient (Like Just overclocked a PII from 266 to 456Mhz ancient) PC and am looking to install a linux based OS to use as a file server...

Thus hitting 2 birds with one stone finally checking out Linux and developing server experience in one go...

Current PC specs:
Intel P2 456Mhz
64MB RAM (Will max out the board this week)
El Cheapo LAN card (It's fairly small so I wouldn't expect it to be very quick)
Will be getting a wireless card for an ad hoc network too

I need to know what build I should run...The Computers connecting to it will be XP and Win2k
I would prefer some form of GUI

Any pointers would be appreciated...I realise the specs are pretty lousy but will get a P3 (or 4) when I start getting the hang of it...

Cheers folks

A:Linux for a newbie setting up a server

If you don't care about a gui, then something like CentOS would be best.

However, almost any linux distribution can work well as a server, and the're all pretty much the same to install.

If you want a gui, go with Ubuntu or Fedora, since you want to check out the desktop environments anyways. I prefer Ubuntu personally, but either is fine.

Once you've installed the OS, go to the package manager and search for/install the following:

-Apache (web stuff)
-Php5
-Maybe mysql for database stuff
-Samba for windows sharing

Be warned that it might be a bit slow while running a gui on a P2

After a month of getting a windows server (2003 btw) to work, or sort of work :| i want to increase the learning curve and go for a Linux server, well to be honest I have to use a Linux server.

Another college close to my college gave my society a free "Ultra Enterprise 450" server, its got 2 ultraSPARC processors, 18 9GB HDD's and I couldn't calculate the RAM because it doesn't say it on the chips. But this is supposedly a Linux only box and will not run anything with a windows stamp on it.

I am looking for a "FREE" Linux server, I was thinking of going for ubuntu server but I thought I would ask in here and see what experts think. I am looking for something with heaps of information/How to's on the software as well as the software being user-friendly (yes I know Linux servers are not user friendly, but you get the point).

The Linux server will be the login server to start off with but it will also be connected to the windows server that will be hosting dedicated gaming servers, is this possible? to connect a Linux server to a win server.

A:Linux Server, The Learning Curve

This server has UltraSPARC processors in it, so make sure you download the right version and read the correct installation guide Yes, Ubuntu runs on SPARC.

After you have installed the OS, it will behave pretty much the same way as on a PC. You have to remember your CPU architecture when downloading binary programs though. Anything saying x86 or x86_64 or PPC will not run.

In addition to some Linux flavours, you can run BSDs and Solaris on that machine.

What do you mean by "connect"? You can tie the boxes together with shoelaces no problem.. Or do you mean something more specific?

Do you know of any that would work on Windows 2000/2003 server and Linux Fedora ?

Of course, you would run distinct compilations, but I hope the UI and operation would be the same.

Thnx

p.s. the icing on the cake would be if they also allow synchronization (mirroring) between the servers. For this last feature I wouldn't mind buying the software.

Mind you, synchronising files between servers will be tricky, since file permissions in Windows and unix are very different. Any kind of fine-grained permissions systems will not work. You would probably have to sync files, then run a script to fix all perms.

We have a linux server. All XP Pro clients. Just purchased first Windows 7 computer. It will not allow access to data on server. Keeps asking for passwords. The correct user and password are given and it will not accept. Any suggestions?

A:Linux server will not allow windows 7 logon

Windows 7 default settings are much more secure than previous version of windows, using stringer encryption and not using older protocols for authentication.
You can set it to be more like previous version:
Click Start, type secpol.msc, press Enter
Navigate to here:
Computer Settings | Windows Settings | Security Settings | Local Policies | Security Options
Change these settings:
Network security: LAN Manager authentication level - Set to Send LM & NTLM responses

Network Security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients - Uncheck Require 128-bit encryption

Network Security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) servers - Uncheck Require 128-bit encryption

Reboot and test.

You may need to set this one as well:

Domain member: Require strong (Windows 2000 or later) session key - Disabled

Please check the diagram.
Problem:

I canít connect to Linux or windows 2003 server by VPN because I am not getting authentication by remote and routing of windows 2003 , windows 2003 server is under Linux box. Hardware Routerís gateway and IP is different from windows 2003 Serverís Gateway and IP.

If I connect windows 2003 server direct with hardware router with IP 192.168.1.2 and with port forwarding to 192.168.1.2 its fine. But I want to access windows 2003 server and other pc as it in the network diagram.

What software I have to Install and configure to enable VPN connection by Remote and routing of windows 2003

If you can give me brief idea, I would appreciate.

We run a linux server and have been recently getting strange warnings and the like.

The cron daemon emailed something to us about /etc/cron.dail/ipcs, so I checked it out.

Code:
#!/bin/sh
#Added by Amal.. :(
for i in `ipcs -s | grep nobody | awk '{print $2}'`; do ipcrm -s $i; done
pkill -9 httpd
sleep 2
/etc/init.d/httpd startssl
/etc/init.d/httpd restart
chmod 755 /etc/cron.daily/ipcs
Is this normal, or a hacker?

Or this: (/etc/cron.daily/tmpwatch)

Code:
/usr/sbin/tmpwatch -x /tmp/.X11-unix -x /tmp/.XIM-unix -x /tmp/.font-unix -x /tmp/.ICE-unix -x /tmp/.Test-unix 240 /tmp
/usr/sbin/tmpwatch 720 /var/tmp
for d in /var/{cache/man,catman}/{cat?,X11R6/cat?,local/cat?}; do
if [ -d "$d" ]; then
/usr/sbin/tmpwatch -f 720 $d
fi
done

Then lfd emailed me about some suspicious files (they started with #!), some were named:
/tmp/bc.txt
/tmp/sess_adav631df3a1ddfaa34s1x1wwo521459

But none of the files exist when I go to check in the /tmp directory the minute after I get the email warning.

Any idea what is going on here?

Hi.

Have this problem and any help would be great. Have a aLinux Redhat9 mail/internet server on a site, and users are running 98 machines.

Started upgrading to Xp, and then the problems started. Xp machines keeps losing their connection to the Linux server i.e. cant receive mail or browse the internet. For some reason the xp machines keep losing the IP connection.

Xp machines are set to static IP's and users have to keep changing IP addresses so the can re-connect to the linux server. Tried assigning automatically and no luck.

Disabled the Firewal on SP2 on Xp machines, but no luck (dont know much about linux).

Is it the firewall on the linux dropping the connection?

Any help.
Thanks!

Man oh man! I never thought it would be this hard to do! I have a total of 2 computers. I have linux redhat 8.0 setup on the server and win 98 setup on the other cpu, I use a D-link router and both are behind the D-link(2 connections to the server and one to the win 98 cpu). the D-link is attached to my cable modem. I can access the server http page by typing in the IP of the server(via DHCP) from my win 98 cpu but I cant access it outside my own network??? I have read alot of documentation over the last 2 weeks and Have not been able to advance one step although I am getting pretty firmiluare with linux, lol. Can somebody please help me figure this out! If I can access an http outside my network that would be a huge break through for me! Where do I start and what do I do!

Hi,

I have a server running linux with Apache and MySQL. now I am trying to create an ODBC link through my XP machine. I have installed the ODBC driver and everything.

i am trying to create a system DSN connector. At the stage where it asks me about servername password, user, etc... I just cant figure out what to type in server. Should it be the IP address or anything else behind it. Because when I used the IP it says

[MySQL][ODBC 3.51 Driver]#HY000Host '88-106-153-88.dynamic.dsl.as9105.com' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server

any ideas? Thanks

A:Connecting through ODBC from Win XP to Linux MySQL Server

Well all I know about is MS SQL server and its on the domain but I usually use this type of method -

www.fontstuff.com/ebooks/free/fsLinkingToSQLServer.pdf

With linux I would think you should just need to type in the machine name.

Also with this setup is this all local or is this across the internet?

i'm nut running ubuntu, so i can't tell you weather they have any gui config tools, but i can start you off.

you need to have smbd running (samba)
you can start it with:

"sudo /etc/init.d/samba start"

the default workgroup in ubuntu is MSHOME, but you'll need to change that if you use something else.
samba will require a username and password to access the share.
samba configuration is in /etc/samba/smb.conf

ubuntu may have a configuration utility for "point and click", but hopefully this is some help

This came in to thought of mine. Now i know this is probably not related about anything with Windows 7 but i just thought i might ask. What are the comparisons between the two and what are the differences? Both operating systems deal with networking and workgroups along with clients and work stations. I am a bit familiar with Windows Server 2003/2007 and how you can use operating systems like XP, Vista, and 7 to be part of the workgroup with the server that has Server 2003 (for XP) and Server 2007 (for Vista/7). If i am wrong in anyway, please do correct me. Thanks.

A:Microsoft Windows Server OS vs Linux/Unix

Well, That's a loaded question.

My short answer:
They both have merits for doing different things.

If you can get mail but not send it, it sounds like a configuration problem. Are you sure the servers settings are correct in the pc? You could have an extra space or something.

check it out

Hi guys,

I am new to Linux.
I want to build a computer server based on linux for my SOHO based on approximately 5 desktop(wired LAN) and 5 laptop(wireless LAN).

At the moment i am using Linksys Wireless Router(4 LAN Port) and wireless print server from Linksys as well. Connected to ADSL connection through a wireless ADSL modem, even though the connection from the modem to my router is on RJ45(can't trust wireless in this yet.....)

Here's what i need on the new Linux server:
1. File storage for the business application
2. Mail server (to serve internally and as a gateway mail server, checks for antivirus, spam and malicious softwares)
3. VPN connection (available to seeks data and print from remote location)
4. Printing service (this is for LAN service, wired and wireless)
5. Bandwith limiter for designated IP's, whereas clients will have less speed than admin IP's (some staff get's me headache since they are using loads of bandwidth for downloading softwares on working hour).

Here's my question:
1. What hardware should i use for this matter? The newest or what? Is there any key point i should check on buying hardwares for linux server.
2. One big capacity HD or multiple HD for each clients for convenient access?
3. Does KVM switch works under linux as well? (Don't want to but extra monitor and kerboard+mouse..... Hehe)
4. What Linux should i use? Is there any one solution linux to all this? (By using linux here, i mean coz it's free... Read more
