hp stream won't drive powered speakers

Q: hp stream won't drive powered speakers

Possible hardware/firmware design problem. Two identical laptops purchased 2 years apart. Both work great with headphones or built in speakers. Neither will work with powered speakers. Tried 3 different powered speaker systems, including a high end model. All had the same problem on both laptops. Drops one channel and/or goes mono. Sound quality is POOR. Realtek only shows one output device HP/Speakers. Config options don't show any option for external speakers. Since headphones work fine, assuming it is having problems when it senses a powered speaker system. Has anyone else seen this?

Preferred Solution: hp stream won't drive powered speakers

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello, this started a few years ago. Got into gaming. At first, no problem picking between headset and external speakers, then slowly change, do no sound. I can pick either one, headset/mic always works. I can listen to music and movies through headset. Did a complete new install of Windows 7 onto an SSD, my Steam Games are on another SSD, also installed a new 2 Tb hard drive or general stuff. I have Realtek HD Audio Manager installed ( same as when i first bought the computer ). The sound bar ( when I pick external speakers ) rises and falls with audio, but noting to speakers. When I set up the speaker config and test, I see each speaker being activated, and I only hear a very low Bzzzz/Humm, from each speaker as it's being tested. The external speakers are selected as default, ran audio troubleshooter, downloaded/installed/uninstalled Realtek Audio manager over and over again, drivers too. Nothing has helped. Here are my specs:

First thing, remove the Dell Service Tag number from your post. Dell considers this personal data. The Model number is not the Service Tag number, the Model number would be something like Inspiron 610, XPS8100, etc. (I used to work the Dell forums).

Is the "Speakers" (Realtek) set as default playback device?

As you have both High Definition Audio Devices (2) that suggests a possible problem. Windows only installs that generic, basic function, driver when the correct hardware driver is not installed. Disable the High Definition devices in the Device Manager. See if that makes any difference.

I accidentally powered off my PC and when I powered it back on I can only get sound through the headphones. The speakers still seem to have power (they "pop" when I turn them on) but no sound comes through them.

Sometimes the sound installed drivers become corrupted
You may need to re-install the drivers again

I'm baffled that for some reason, on my T530, my DVD drive D: shows as "Powered Off." I can right-click the drive and it shows me a 'Power On' option, but clicking it does nothing. If I hover my mouse over drive D, it says: 'drive is powered off, to power on the optical drive, press the eject button on the optical drive.' That also does nothing. Also, my 'battery stretch' is off, so it does not appear to be a power setting. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Another issue with the laptop: the Passport drive is not recognized in the USB 3.0 connector on this laptop, but it is on the 2.0 connector. The USB cable I am using is the one that came with it, it has the blue part and sticker that says 3.0.

I was able to put this drive onto the laptop in the 3.0 connector yesterday but not anymore. I tried disable and re-enable the USB Controller but that didn't work.

When I plug it into the 3.0 connector, it actually does get power to the drive - the light comes on and I can hear it spin, its just that Windows 10 won't see it.

My laptop HDD recently would not load windows. So i installed the OS on a different drive. Now, when i connect the old drive VIA USB 2.0toSATA it will not show up in My Computer. Disk Management will not show the drive either. The HDD is getting power, i can hear the disk spinning.

A:Hard Drive is powered, but does not show up.

Plug in and turn on the external USB hard drive
Right mouse click on My Computer
Left click on Manage
Left click on Device Manager
Expand the USB list
Find the USB device for your USB Hard Drive (the one that has no description)
Right mouse click - Uninstall
Turn off the external USB hard drive
Turn on the external USB hard drive and let it find and install the driver

Open 'Administration Tools', select 'Computer Management', click on 'Disk Management' and see if it can be seen here. If it does show here, chances are it doesn't have a drive letter assigned. If this is the case, right click on the drive, select "Change drive Letter...', and assign a drive letter to it.

If it was not seen there, go to 'Action' on the menu bar, click on 'Rescan Disks' and it should come up. If necessary assign a drive letter to as described above.

I have a Sabrent 2.5" hard drive enclosure SBT-EKU25 that I am trying to use with USB on a Windows 7 laptop. The drive works but stops doing anything for several minutes at a time. There are no error messages, it just stops... no flashing or steady light. A minute or two later it picks up where it left off as though nothing has happened. It will then run fine again for several seconds and then it goes back to "sleep". I am trying to use the drive to backup files and it spends more time sleeping than doing anything else.

The drive enclosure does not come with any drivers and is supposed to be plug and play. I have checked the USB drivers and Windows says they are up to date. I have installed a 60Gb hard drive from an old laptop in it.

If i plug the the drive into the USB port on my Windows XP desktop it works fine.

I have a Compaq desktop with an
AMD Athlon 1.1GHZ
128MB of RAM
a 16mb TNT video card
and 60GB HDD

I tried to reformat the hard drive because I initially had a virus on it - so the only means was to format it. The first time I reinstalled it successfully with a copy of a WinXP Pro cd, that came with a dell laptop of mine. BIG MISTAKE-- the computer tripped out and was asking for authentication. No problme arised yet, windows xp installed, and authentication was the only thing that was being irritating.

I commensed to reformat the hard drive with nothing in it except the OS installed, with a different copy of WinXP that did not come with my dell laptop. In the middle of reformatting, however, about 51% complete, I powered down the computer because I thought it would not hurt the formatting process, so I could take it back to the owner's house and finish up the reformatting process there, and at the same time be able to hang out at their pool. the old idea of "kill two birds with one stone" or something. >_< I feel pretty stupid. I hope you guys don't chew me out now, but yeah.

So I tried to turn the computer on again later on to finish reformatting. I pressed the power button and everything seemed to go right, until nothing appeared on the monitor. the monitor stays black, with an orange 'standby' light as if the computer was on standby.

I don?t have the notebook in front of me but check the BIOS if you can find an option called ?USB legacy support?. If yes you have to enable this feature that your notebook can recognize the external drive.

Can you boot from an USB stick? I mean you can also create the recovery files on an USB stick so this would be also an option to restore factory settings.

Hi there

Intuitively one might think using Powered (from the mains) external USB HDD's would require more power from the computer as well compared with those small self powered units.

I've no way to measure this but I'm sure the small units might consume MORE power as the computer has to supply all the power for Disk rotation and the USB I/O controller.

I only ask this because I need to put two large powered USB units (both with 2 X 3 TB Raid 0 HDD's in each unit) on to a USB 3 Hub.
The two HDD units seem to perform perfectly well whether connected to the chargeable port on an HP laptop or the "non chargeable" ones.

The RAID 0 is powered by the HDD itself (internal Hardware RAID) --used RAID 0 for speed -- don't need to mirror etc - I've enough backup if the whole thing goes bonkers. !!

The files on these HDD's are serving music and video so not intensive used -- don't seem to have any problem streaming media from the laptop.

Any engineers out there - curious over what is the actual load (power wise) on the computer if a POWERED USB HDD is used compared to a Self powered one. Note the Hub I'm using is not also powered.

However although there is power going to the drive, it is not recognised on boot nor in Windows 10 x64.
There are no drivers missing in Device Manager. The SSD/HDD are all recognised and working using USB to SATA adapters.

Can any one help please?

Hi to all an anybody that can help.. I do like my HP Stream, alot of negative post about space issues i have found, but I knew that when buying it that it was not huge, did find out later that it was a closed system, but that was the exchange for the lower price. Now what i am hoping for is a way around, meaning resolve the problem and quit complaining about the problem. So question i have are related to the update in Windows 10 for update 1607. I updated to 10 already and I am looking to update to the 1607 and am out of room by the needed 8 gb for the update, i have only 2.6 left and cleaned up as much as i can. So my question is can a SD card of any size be allocated in the C Drive for more capacity, or by using a SD card is there any work around that might help. I will admit i am not a novice tech guy, but can follow a step by step plan if given one. My issue with this has taught me plenty but no one seems to be asking my exact question. Thanks again to anybody that can help.

I built a computer for my brother, only we've run into some issues. The IDE CD/DVD Drive doesn't work. It is recognized in the device manager, and shows as "working properly". However, any CDs or DVDs placed in the drive are not scanned. I'm at a loss as to how this is happening.

As for the speakers, my brother picked up a set of Logitech LS11 speakers, which only have one input. Once I put it in the proper slot(I actually tried all slots), the computer still doesn't seem to recognize the speakers. The speakers themselves came with no instructions(other than plugging it into the right spot), and no drivers on a disc(wouldn't work anyway). I looked online for a driver, but I was unable to find one.

My brother has been looking forward to having this computer for over a year, and I would appreciate any help that can be shed on the matter.

I have been reading the reviews of several sound cards. I have not been able to find out if the sound cards have enough output to drive speakers or, as I suspect, you need a separate amplifer/receiver to drive the speakers.
If that is the case then it would seen the amp would have as much impact on the quality of the sound as the sound card. Also some amps may would better with some cards than others?
So, do I need a sound card and an amp/receiver?

A:Do sound cards drive speakers?

Most soundcards can drive a tiny pair of speakers or headphones. Most PC speaker sets are self powered. If you're like me, you'll step up to the pump and get a good DAC, power amp, and speakers.

Hey, I have a newly built computer with windows vista ultimate 64bit installed on it. Through the computers speakers I can hear weird interference noises, kind of like chirping and scratching sounds. This interference occurs every time the hard drive indicator flashes. I have a Asus P5VD2-VM-SE motherboard and have installed all of the drivers that came with it. If I mute or turn down the audio whilst in windows vista and still have the computer speakers volume turned up the interference noises stop. Does this mean the interference is driver/ software related?

I have tried headphones and the front panel audio ports but I still get the interference noises. On the Asus site for my motherboard I'm pretty sure that their latest drivers are the ones I've already installed that came with my motherboard.

Any help would be appreciated on how to fix the interference because it is very irritating.

The speakers are on but wheni try to play a tune in Media player/you tube etc it says there is a problem with my sound device. In device manager it says my sound device is 'Modem #0 line playback(emulated)'. there are no drivers listed next to it.
I've googled my problem and found loads of threads but still cant figure it out. Many thanks in advance

A:No sound from speakers after formatting hard drive

Just re-install the audio drivers... It is probably AC'97, and you will have to download them from the website of the same manufacturer that made the motherboard. The audio drivers are generic unless you have a specialty sound card.

A:Hard drive making noise thru speakers

The problem is your hard drive is making vibrations which are causing noise on your speaker wires...thus your hard drive 'noise' makes it way to your actual speakers. The hard drive probably needs to be reseated or tightened down so its not vibrating the interior of your tower. It can also lead to other issues like bad sectors because of the vibrations.

I was about to post this as a problem, then I found the resolution.

[Windows 7]

If I go into my sound properties via the taskbar.
(right click on the speaker in the bottom right corner and select Playback Devices)
Select your speakers/headphone and click Properties.
Then select the Levels tab
Now click the little headphone icon against the two entries associated with your microphone, to mute it. I.e. for me, Rear Pink in and Front pink in.

Voila, no more clicking on my headphones.

I think it's something to do with interference between the two ports (microhone and headphone) being so close to each other.
BTW you can still monitor/hear your own voice if you wish simply select Listen to Device in the Recording Devices properties.

The Sonos Music System can stream music from the internet to ever room in your house wirelessly. To do this one of its components is connected to a router using ethernet cable. However I want to stream music from my external Hard drive via my Thomson TG782T Router to the Sonos Music System.
My Question is: Do I just connect the external Hard drive to the USB port of the Thomson TG782T Router or is it more complicated.
In the absence of detailed instruction (Thomson TG782T Router Manual) i need advise on how to go about it (i.e. test steaming music from this Ext Hard Drive via the router to a PC), prior to purchasing the Sonos Music System.

Thanks is advance.

Blow Error is happening when using Drive File Stream drive and folders.

MS Excel 2016
Your changes could not be saved to "g:\my drive...." because of a sharing violation. Try saving to a different file.

Similar problems happening in Word as well.

All other programs are saving properly.

Excel and Word save new files properly but when working on an existing file and I press save then the file is not saved and the error pops up and I have to save under a new file. Excel creates a temporary file with random #'s e.g.: 7A4764

I looked online and Microsoft said that I need modify/delete privileges to be able to save to "network drives" I've given full admin privileges to all user accounts and still the same issue.

Everything was working fine until 3 days ago when Windows had a security

I've uninstalled the Windows Updates. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling MS Office and no luck. I've uninstalled Drive File Stream and installed a new version and still no luck. I tried creating a new user account on the same computer and tried running DFS on there and tried saving there and no luck.

I'm running Windows 10 64 bit and MS Office 2016.

I'm currently using Back up & Sync and Office is saving using Google Drive folder.

Please advise on a fix.

Once I plug my headphones in or my hearing aids bluetooth device in, it all goes south. The internal speakers continue to work as does the bluetooth, but nothing is coming out of the headphones. Since I was once in IT, this problem is unique to the jack itself. Either the jack lifted up or was pushed back and never properly tested. The hook, I just received this computer 3 weeks ago to replace a faulty HDMI out port. I was told that there would be an open ticket so if I had any problems with this computer it would be attended to. Unfortunately, that is not the case.
