Vista doesn't detect sound card, but other OS does.

Q: Vista doesn't detect sound card, but other OS does.

Title says it all. I have two hard drives, one with Ubuntu Linux and Vista. Ubuntu works fine, and detects and uses everything. Vista doesn't see anything at all. Not even a PCI Audio... thingy. I'm using a Sound Blaster Audigy.

Preferred Solution: Vista doesn't detect sound card, but other OS does.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm pretty much lost here. A while ago I reinstalled windows XP on my parents' PC. On my next visit they told me there is no sound. I checked to see through dxdiag that it does not detect any sound card. So I thought I perhaps forgot the sound drivers.

It has integrated audio chipset and I didn't know exactly which audio drivers to install. Tried a bunch, some didn't even install and others installed, but no sound still.

Then I uninstalled audio drivers and just tried to do a windows update. That redirected me to a bunch of sound drivers, tried the newest one - same, no sound still. And dxdiag still says that there is no sound card.

After a while I found the driver CD for the motherboard. Installed the sound drivers from there and STILL no sound.

So I'm pretty much stumped. Maybe the the hardware is failing? The motherboard is relatively new (about a year old). Any ideas? Much appreciated.

Hi guys, I'm new here.

I've had some virus trouble and decided to reformat and reinstall windows. Well after I reinstalled, windows didn't detect that I had a sound card, or network card installed. I've looked up a little bit of information on it, but it's been rather confusing and I'm a bit scared to continue messing with my computer with out knowing what I'm doing.

I read up that I need to install some chipset drivers so that my motherboard can recognize the different cards? I downloaded a program to tel me what my chipset is, but it gave me a long number and I didn't know which one to use. The chipset it gave me was i865p/pe/g/i848p. I downloaded some chipset and installed it, but when I restarted my computer it said that it couldn't detect an OS. Some how since then my computer can boot properly and can load up windows.

So I guess what my question is, what drivers do I need to download for my computer? My mother board is a Think Centre M50 818931u. If you need anymore information about my pc let me know.

Thanks in advance,

A:Windows Xp doesn't detect network or sound card after reinstalling and formatting

Well, there are several ways to approach this.

I keep a junky USB network card, and it's drivers on a thumbdrive, and everytime I reinstall XP, first thing I do is install SP3 standalone, and the second thing I do is install the USB network card and run Windows Update. Most or all of the drivers for the motherboard (or "chipset") usually get installed this way. Saves time hunting for specific drivers for specific motherboards, because it is tedious and time-consuming sometimes.

If this is an OEM machine (Gateway, Dell, HP, etc...) you can find the motherboard drivers via the support page of the web-site of the company that manufactured it. Just run the model number of the computer on their search engine, and the drivers will be there.

If the machine is custom, there is always a silk-screened model number on the surface of the motherboard, that will tell you what model it is. You can then usually find drivers for that model on the motherboard manufacturers support page.

These "driver finding programs" that I see seem like big fat scams, trying to get you to register, pay, read ads, recieve spam and after spending a lot of time, you still don't have the drivers. I wouldn't waste time with any of them, and have always been able to find the drivers I need.

It's a skill, and takes practice. One component of this is the ability to see where the time-wasters are (such as "register for our free driver finding service"), and where the... Read more

Hey guys~~~ Yeah I probably know you guys deal with this problem a lot...
And I searched the forums about the mic prob except none of them really fixed my problem.

Alright well I'll first start off with the details.
OS: Win XP Pro SP2
SOUND: Integrated Soundmax HD audio.
MIC: Logitech headset.

I have a SoundMAX HD audio (integrated) and I wanted to test out the mic...and I tried using M$ sound recorder and no sound came through the mic. I put it in the pink socket, turned on the headset's mic option on. Turned on the Mic on volume controls, with the mic boost.

So what I've noticed while trying to work with the Sounds + Audio Controls is that, there are two different devices for Playback and Recording. SoundMAX HD audio O is used for Playback (and will not record). And SoundMAX HD audio I is only used for recording, and no playback. And I have chosen the right device for recording + playback.

I'm just adding a link to an uploaded image for my volume controls. http://img240.imageshack.us/img240/9818/volumecontrol3ng.jpg I noticed that on the playback device, when I'm listening to music the green lights go up and down, but for the mic its stationary and stays at the bottom blinking.

So I hope to find some suggestions~ Please help me out? Thanks in advance guys.

Wow, that's odd indeed! Do you see them in Device Manager? If not, try and do a search for new hardware. Also, if your familiar with navigating the BIOS, make sure those devices didn't get disabled somehow. You may even want to try unplugging those devices, and adding them back to the system one at a time.

Hello, my name is Conan. I have installed Windows 7(Ultimate, 64-bits) in 2009, my previous os was Windows XP(32-bit). Although I am really happy with W7 there's something which is a big turn-off. The sound, that is, it hasn't worked on W7 ever since I installed it. It's not the devices that are the problem, they all work perfectly fine when connected to my iPod. As a matter of fact, It's quite obvious what the problem is, windows doesn't detect any connected audio devices. Here are some screenshots:

I have already downloaded the latest Realtek driver, but this also didn't detect any audio devices

A:Windows doesn't detect any audio devices: no sound

Yes, Win 7 has detected an audio device. What it's not detecting is that you have speakers plugged in.

Do you have a set of speakers you can plug into the back (green) speaker jack?

Or maybe a set of headphones into the front (green) headphone jack?

If it didn't detect any devices you wouldn't see those options.

Right now you're set to output audio to "Digital Out", it's set as the default output device, plug speakers in, select "Speakers" then click on "Set Default".

Hello, I've been having this problem 2 days ago and it's a bit frustrating. I was just playing some games when it suddenly restarted automatically. My device manager doesn't seem to acknowledge my graphics card anymore for some apparent reason. I've tried plugging my monitor in my graphics card and it just seems like on a standby mode with the blank screen showing nothing. But when I plug my monitor to my motherboard port it shows up fine and is in the device manager. I've tried cleaning my drivers with "Driver Sweeper" then reinstalling the lastest driver for my graphics card, but that didn't do anything. I was hoping if anyone knows what's wrong with my graphics card . Thank you.

A:System doesn't detect Graphics Card

OK first of all there are no drivers for Windows 7 supporting you card. Your card is not even supported by Windows Vista as support has been removed, therefore, the reason for the problems you have been experiencing is a driver issue not the card itself. You cannot use 6.5 drivers on you card, the reason why you are getting these blank screens and dropping out of games is because of the drivers.

Not the news you peobably wanted to here but an upgrade is needed the drivers which would have been used would have been Catalyst 9.3.

Hello all. I decided to switch to the newest version of the Forceware drivers for my Geforce 4 4200Ti graphics card today. I was running the 61.77 Forceware drivers, and planned on switching to the 71.84 (latest certified version) drivers. I created a System Restore point in XP, and then removed my old drivers via the Add/Remove Programs utility in the Control Panel. I then restarted my computer, and on startup Windows autodetected my graphics card. I cancelled out of the autodetect wizard in order to run the 71.84 install file, which I had already downloaded. Upon executing the install file, the drivers were unzipped to the temporary NVIDIA folder, but immediately after this I got an error message saying the NVIDIA installation could not detect a compatible display device.

I also tried getting windows to detect my card through the Add New Hardware util, but windows was unable to see my card there. I have no idea what could be causing this problem whatsoever. I was thinking maybe you folks could help me out with this one. Thanks for your time.

A:Solved: Forceware 71.84 doesn't detect my card!

You should not cancel the Found New Hardware Wizard but let it go through so that Windows installs its generic drivers. Once they are install the Forceware installation should work.

Hi, here is an e-mail I sent to Belkin tech support ... but I haven't heard back so I thought I'd try here. Can anyone help me?

Hi, I'm trying to set up a Belkin F5D6020 ver2 wireless adapter on my IBM 233mhz laptop running WIN98se. I want to connect to my existing wired network. I have a cable modem connected to my Belkin F5D6231-4 router. I have 2 PCs connected to the router via ethernet cable. The wired part of the network is working beautifully. All wired PCs can talk to each other. When I have my wired network adapter installed on the laptop, it works great too.

I installed the installation software on the laptop using the EASY option. I plug in the adapter card when prompted and Windows installs the drivers. My computer doesn’t ask me to restart so I restart manually. The monitor utility comes up and, after a minute, a warning message displays ‘The access point you are attempting to access does not appear to exist. Please select the new one’. The prompts on the utility screen read:

Profile name: Default
Operating mode: infrastructure
Channel = 3 (greyed out)
Tx Rate = Auto
MAC address = 00-30-BD-D2-BF-06
status = scanning

There is no signal strength or link quality. I click on the site survey tab and there is nothing listed. I click rescan and still nothing. The green link LED on the card is flashing. The WLAN light on the router is solid green.

On my PC web browser I go to to access the router set up utility.

Hello, I recently performed a clean install of Windows 7 x64 Ultimate onto my computer. While doing so, I had to unplug my graphics card and use the onboard video, otherwise I'd get an error about unexpected restarts.

After installing, Windows 7 doesn't detect the graphics card (the card works, but it doesn't show up under the device manager and I can't install nVidia drivers). If I use the BIOS to switch to onboard video, then that shows up on the device manager and works fine, but I use this PC for gaming so I'd prefer to use the video card.

I'm using a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R motherboard, and my hard drive is a seagate barracuda 500gb.

The system is brand new, built myself. No previous operating system on it.
I tried installing windows vista. I get past everything, until it asks me to select a drive to install to, and the list is empty. I tried every driver on the mobo's cd, and every driver on their website, none of them worked. I've tried different SATA modes, and ports on the mobo, and it doesn't work (I would dear say I've tried everything, except another OS because I don't have access to one).

However, when I select browse to search for drivers, when installing vista, I can select the local drive and search it for drivers. Does this mean it's there and it's something else, or is it just an option and what not? (there's a floppy there too, but I have none installed on the computer).

My bios sees the HD just fine. I'm out of ideas, and friggin fed up. I tried contacting Gigabyte but that was pointless.

I have a recently delivered Windows 7 64 bit SP1 computer, replacing a much older one which developed a motherboard fault.

The older computer (also running Win 7 64 bit SP1) used two Hauppauge Nova HD S2 PCI cards as TV tuners, and worked fine with Media Centre.

Now I can't get Media Centre to detect even a single tuner correctly, or produce a TV signal on screen, in the new computer.

It detects only a single DVB-S tuner, not two DVB-S2 cards, and produces sound but no picture when I go ahead anyway and ask it to tune the signals from Astra and Eurobird satellites at 28.2 E.

I've removed one tuner, and tried again - with no more success. It still 'sees' only a DVB-S tuner.

The TV card is working - it works ok with Hauppauge's own WinTV7 software in this computer, and produces sound and picture on at least all the major channels (including BBC HD). (I haven't tested it exhaustively).

I first tried just installing the Hauppauge drivers without WinTV7, then running WMC Setup. Then I tried again after 'proving' that the card is working with the Hauppauge program.

I've now run WMC Setup half a dozen or more times, resetting the TV settings each time, and run through the TV signal Setup routine. Every time, it only detects a DVB-S card, and won't get a picture on any channel if I continue anyway with the wrongly-detected card.

Device manager reports the device as working properly.

I have an older Medion akoya p6618 laptop running W7 x86. The option for wireless in windows has vanished, like the pc doesn't have a wireless card, just as it would appear on a normal desktop pc - only LAN. It works fine with cable. Device manager shows no wireless option either. I have tried system restore, then formatting and dl'ing wlan and lan drivers from the medion website. Same problem. When i try to enable wifi using the Fn keyboard shortcut, nothing happens. The little led does not turn on.

At this point I'm feeling like card is just broken and that it is a hardware issue. What do you think? I'm considering buying a dongle like this one (TP-LINK TL-WN725N Netv?rksadapter USB 2.0 | Model: TL-WN725N | pc-lager.dk). Would this thing enable me to have wifi?

Any help is appreciated.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that when I did a system restore it worked temporarily and I had internet access, but after a restart it stopped working. In the past it was hit or miss whether or not it would work, so again I'm leaning towards a hardware issue. Maybe there are some things I missed, though.

A:Unable to detect the sound card in windows 7 64-bit

I have a recording studio with several 32 bit audio drivers. Usually not a problem to have 32 bit devices or drivers in Win 7 64 bit.

I would suspect a problem with the sound card more than the drivers. PCI suggests old hardware. The motherboard you have is a new board and the PCI sockets on most new boards of this type are actually "bridged" from the PCIe bus and not a true PCI slot. This can cause problems with some PCI devices.

danneth, welcome to the forums.

First thing that comes to mind is have you installed any motherboard/chipset drivers? Windows 7 has a fairly good inventory of drivers, but depending on the age of the hardware it may be not much more than enough to provide basic functionality, and take actual drivers from the hardware manufacturer to get full function out of it.

?ello! I have an issue with my HP Probook 4520s. Its internal speakers  and microphone doesn't work. I've tried to install and reinstall drivers from here, tried to rollback driver to older version but I always have the same result: installed the IDT sound codec, and after a restart, the mute button  turned red and I cannot switch it. Soundcard device ID: HDAUDIO\FUNK_01&VEN_111&DEV_7605OS: Windows 7 Professional x86 How can I fix it?

Hi,Same problem here. After repair of the display cable (Probook is just 2 years old!) by service centre a white cross-red dotthrough the speaker-icon appears. Service centre cannot fix it.HP helpdesk chat reports soundcard is defect. Soundcard is part of motherboard is said so motherboard needs to be exchanged.Second opinion learns that soundcard is NOT a part of the motherboard.I've bought a replacement Probook with a working, checked it!, motherboard and soundcard.New motherboard and soundcard have been placed incl. different Windows 7 but still (again) no sound. Can anybody give a solution ?

I recently reformatted my system, and ever since my computer refuses to recognize my sound card as installed. You can see my system specs in my profile, but it is a Soundblaster Xtreme-Music card. I've updated and double checked all of my mobo drivers and I still cannot for the life of me get this card detected. I took the card out, cleaned it, and visually verified that neither the card or pci port is damaged. I am completely stumped, as this is the second computer that I've had this card in and it always works flawlessly. I would greatly appreciate any advice.

The only issue I can think of is the onboard Realtek audio hardware/drivers creating a conflict, but prior to reformatting this was never an issue.

Thanks for your time.

A:Device manager does not detect sound card. Experienced builder stumped

Remove any Soundblaster software\driver,shutdown the pc,unplug the Soundblaster, start the pc,enter bios and check if the onboard sound card is disable.
If not then disable it,save and exit, remove any left behind onboard sound card software\driver.
Shutdown again the pc,plug in the Soundblaster, start the pc,install the software\driver,restart.

Finish and post back.

Once, I could get sound on my computer, but now I cannot get sound to play on my computer.

Dxdiag does not detect a sound card.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the sound card drivers, but it doesn't work.
System restore isn't an option, since I've unknowingly turned it off for the past year.

Here is my SF Diagnostic files and the dxdiag file.

Everyone - literally everyone who has posted a review - says the Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro sounds different for them, whether it's better or worse. I've bought one and plugged it in, installed and updated everything, and it sounds identical to my Realtek HD audio, which I hear sounds pretty terrible compared to the Creative card.

The only way to get it to sound different is through the effects, which I don't like and will never use, (aside from the EQ.)

Did I do something wrong?

PS. I'm listening to lossless music through professional monitor headphones.

One day, the sound suddenly cut out. Since then, it hasn't worked. I had the same dilemma before, but then miraculously, the sound came back. The sound stayed for quite a while, a few months, then it went out again about 2 days ago. Since then, it hasn't worked.

I plugged my speakers into my phone and it worked. So the problem cannot be the speakers. I looked in my Device Manager and I can't find the driver. I tried installing the sound driver, but it tells me this:

"Setup is unable to detect a supported product on your system. Please ensure that your product is properly installed before running this Setup program."

So, my computer isn't detecting the sound card. My sound card is Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit

Btw, I'm running Windows XP

Anyone have any ideas or clues?

A:Sound card doesn't work...

That is a pretty old card and nothing lasts forever. Pull the card and give is a close look; see if you find any leaking caps, burned components, etc. If it looks OK, install it in another pci slot and pw ON. See if windows finds the card.

Hi. I have a new Dell 4550 that worked perfectly when I got it a couple months ago. Since then, something happened to make the sound card (SoundMAX Digital Audio) not support .wav files. It plays .mpeg and .mp3 just fine, but no system sounds or AOL sounds. Another error message is that it doesn't support Hardware Buffering, only Software buffering. I've tried reverting from DirectX 9.0 back to 8.1, didn't work. Tried reinstalling drivers, everything I could think of. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

A:Sound Card doesn't support .wav??

Did you do any major changes to it before this started to happen?

Well sir .... I just got this sound card with a gameport today that is suppose to be for window 7 64 bit ... Installing it in the first rig in my sig.

1. Available PCI slot
2. CD-ROM for Driver installation
3. Speakers
4. Windows3.1/95/98/ME/2000/XP/2003/VISTA, Windows NT 4.X/5.X, Win7 64-bit

yet when I go to install the driver I get this message during the installation....

please plug -in C-media pci audio

Of course it is plugged in ... I double checked it to make sure it was seated properly and I disable the on board sound in the BIOS, but still I get this message. I put it in the other PCI slot and got the same results. I saw something about a audio device in the device manager, but when I tried to install the software I got the same message about plugging in the card. I put everything back including the card and now the device manager isn't showing anything at all about sound ... the sound section is now gone from the device manager!!! Anyone know what the heck is going on? Probably can't but I'll post it anyway ...

I'm having a problem with a network card and its driving me mad! I've installed the card (Dynamode NC-100TX-R) and Windows detects it. The drivers they supplied on the floppy were Realtek RTL8139 Drivers which were for Win 95/Win 98 and I have XP so I went on the Realtek site and downloaded the latest drivers for the RTL8139. When I installed the drivers everything seemed fine until I plugged in the cable. All it says is "Network Cable Unplugged" even when the lights at the back of the card are flashing indicating a connection. Everything on the other end of the cable is fine and I've checked all the settings and they seem right. Can anyone help?
