Dell XPS 13 L322x freezing/crashing locks up on battery

Q: Dell XPS 13 L322x freezing/crashing locks up on battery

My Dell XPS 13 L322x works fine with the power adapter plugged in. When it is removed, and running on batteries after a minute or so, it shuts down, or it locks up and the display goes like in the following picture. Can anyone tell me what the problem is and how to resolve it please?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,
I bought a Dell L322X laptop off eBay around 8 months ago. Its worked fine till now, with no issues or problems. I recently had the "Plugged in, not charging" issue with the battery; it was fixed with a charger off eBay that wasn't Dell made. I've since ordered a new original Dell charger off Amazon, it worked fine for around 2-3 weeks.
However, the battery has since reduced its capacity on what seems like a weekly basis. First it stopped charging at 78%, and kept on going down by around 2-3% a week. It would charge up to 78%, and then stop and say it would take 4-5 hours to fully charge the battery. Even when left overnight on charge it wouldn't go any higher then 78%. It now stops at 60% but when I hover over the battery icon it displays the "Plugged in, charging" message. I've used the Dell detection program and it says there's no fault with the battery so I'm not sure what the issue is here. Do you think its a battery issue and I need a new one? That's what the local computer shop suspected was wrong but I've read that it may be a software issue with Windows 10, and was wondering whether anyone knows anything that could help me here? I'm a student so need the full capacity without having to charge it every few hours.
Thanks.

Hi,
Thank you for writing to us!
We would like to inform you that the system ( L322x ) is an end of life system and the issue describe confirms the system battery is at fault or failing. Since this is a sealed system and end of life we would not be able to tell you if we would be able to source the battery to offer any service, however private message the service tag and email address.

Hi all,
I have a Dell XPS 13 L322X that has a battery issue. I'm pretty sure it needs a new battery as the current one only charges up to 60% and no more, even though the Dell Detection program finds nothing wrong with it. I was wondering whether anyone knows where to buy a good quality battery at a cheap price from? I'm currently looking at this one simply because its the cheapest I can find:
www.power-supplier.co.uk/.../XPS 13-L322X.htm
However, I'm not too sure about it as everyone else seems to be charging a minimum of 50 quid for them. The website seems to be reputable and they have a 60 day money back guarantee and three year warranty. Has anyone purchased off this site or know where I can find a cheapish, good battery for my laptop from?
Thanks.

A:L322X New Battery

Bottom line:  OEM batteries meet Dell's specifications but are expensive.
Anything significantly cheaper will be old stock, rebuilt or third party.  Old stock batteries will have a shorter lifespan (the clock starts ticking on battery cells the day they're made, used or not).  The other two carry significant safety risks (just take a look at what happens to the Galaxy Note 7 when a battery fails and multiply that several times since the capacity in a notebook is far greater).
Expect to pay the equivalent of $100-150 in US dollars for an OEM battery;  anything cheaper is a gamble.

Hi all,
Sorry if this has been posted before but my XPS 13 from 2013 freezes constantly when running unplugged from the power (battery mode).
What happens is the monitor goes weird and the sound freezes giving an annoying noise.
I believe this started happening when I updated to windows 10, but I'm not sure.
I formated the disc and resintalled everything, which seemed to help for the first couple of days and then everything went back to as it was.
Do you think it's some sort of driver problems?
I'm really upset with this because I bought a top of the line (at the time) laptop and now I can't use it unplugged! :(
Thanks for your help!

A:XPS 13 L322X freezes when on battery

Hi!
This is what I've tried so far without any results: - Update the drivers - Update BIOS - Reinstall Windows 10
- Connect an external monitor and run only through the monitor - Install Ubuntu - Replace the battery with a new one from Dell - Ran a Mem Test and Disk Test, all passed
Do you have any suggestions?
If I need to get a new motherboard / CPU / RAM, where can I get it in the UK?
Thanks!

I still have this issue, this is what happens:

Hi,

I have a dell XPS 13 L322X that I bought in 2013. Recently I bought a new cooling fan because the original one was very noisy. However, after replacing the cooling fan, I noticed that the battery capacity dropped to less than 10%. Therefore, I decided to buy a new battery. The problem is that the capacity/health of the new battery dropped to 75% in just a few days. I contacted the seller explaining him the situation and he sent me a new battery; however, the new one has already lost almost 50% of its capacity/health in just three days. One thing that I noticed was that the (second) new battery has an Energy (design) of 50,2 Wh whereas the original one and the first battery that the seller sent me both have 47 Wh. Another thing is that while I was calibrating the battery, in the first cycles, the battery was charged only up to 90% and that the capacity loss happens after a reboot: in the end of a cycle there is a decrease in the battery capacity after a reboot. After a reboot, the system shows the battery is fully charged, but with a decreased capacity. Every single cycle the capacity drops. The XPS 13 is running Ubuntu 16.04. Would you have any idea why that’s happening?

Many thanks.

A:XPS 13 L322X: battery capacity drop

Sounds like you may be getting batteries as old as the original one - there's a date code on the battery you may want to check out (it's part of the Dell part number -- you can find out how to decode it online).

Hello,
I own a Dell XPS 13 L322x notebook/laptop computer. I lent it to a nephew, who put a BIOS-lock password, and now he cannot correctly remember it --so the machine will do nothing but ask me for the Password/Unlock key.  (It also gives me an "Unlock key Hint Number", which changes each time I make three bad attempts to enter a Password/Unlock Key. )
I have seen on this forum that occassionally someone with the authority and access to the required tool offers to help via Private Message.
I know that it is against Dell policy to give personal info such as a service tag or an UNlock Key Hint Number in a public forum like this. SO PLEASE - if you can help me, then private message me and I will return to you the information.  Or, if you prefer, answer me here, publically, and I will private-message you.
Thank you so very much

I called Dell, but unfortunately I am not the original owner; I bought it some months ago on ebay, completely legitmately. I realize that seems like an odd thing to assert, but it is quite relevant, because Dell said it would only help if i could give the details of the original owner as registerted with Dell. I am certain that I am the legitimate owner, but Dell only has a "transfer of ownership" form, which is useless to me, since I have no way to find the first owner of the laptop. A:Turn on/off touchpad with hotkey for Dell XPS 13 (XPS L322X)

I have a Dell XPS 13 and this has bugged me for a year. I've finally fixed it though, via a registry command line:
To turn the trackpad off, run
reg add "HKCU\Software\Cypress TrackPad Driver\Device Select" /v EnableTrackPad /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
To turn the trackpad on, run
reg add "HKCU\Software\Cypress TrackPad Driver\Device Select" /v EnableTrackPad /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
Note that turning the trackpad off shows a slight delay in it taking effect.
To automate these commands, save each command to a batch file, e.g. turnoff.bat, turnon.bat, then you can run them from either the windows run command (Window key + start typing path to the bat file) or via a short-cut app, like slickrun.

hello guys, I think i had a power surge last night at home and two of my laptops died. My XPS LED lights will go on but fan wont spin and screen stays black. I took it apart, removed cmos battery left it unplugged for like an hour and still no luck with it.
I am guessing that the motherbard has been damaged with a power surge since my other laptop died and has the same exact problem.
Where can i find a replacement motherboard? Can i Install the i7 motherboard even tho my xps came with an i5? Does the heatsink and rest of the parts remain the same between the i5 and i7?

A:Dell XPS 13 L322X i5 need motherboard replacement in europe

You'll have to search for a local source.  The CPU is soldered to the mainboard, so it gets replaced with the board itself.
You can replace an i5 board with an i7.  The only caveat would be that systems having Intel-only GPUs generally use a different heatsink than those with hybrid Intel-nVidia or Intel-AMD GPUs.

Hi,
I recently installed a software on my laptop, but when using it I get the following error message :

****
Faild to create OpenGL context for format QSurfaceFormat(version 2.0, option QFlags(), depthBufferSize 24, redBufferSize -1, greenBufferSize -1 blueBufferSize -1, alphaBufferSize -1, StencilBufferSize 8, samples -1, swapBehavior 2, swapInterval 1, profile 0).
This is mostly likely caused by not having the necessary graphic drivers installed.
Install a driver providing OpenGL 2.0 or higher, or if this is not possible, make sure the ANGLE Open GL ES 2.0 emulation libraries (libEGL.dll, libGLESv2.dll and d3dcompilet_*.dll) are available in the application executable's directory or in a location listed in PATH.

It is my understanding that I have to install an appropriate driver for my graphic card, but I cannot find which one. I am using Windows 7 (64bits) in a Dell XPS 13 laptop L322x.
Thank you for your help :)

Error Code: 2000-0511

What is strange, is the behaviour of the fan changes when the battery light is blinking, and it seems at time moment that the fan works correctly since the noise disappears remarkably.
Please, is the problem within the fan, have I to change it ?

Hello All,

Hi Saladine,
Thanks for writing to us.
Looks to be a DOA (dead on arrival) screen. usually 8 beeps indicate either the problem with screen or with the video card, sometimes both.
Aren't you getting display on external monitor with the new screen attached. if no, then put back the old LCD again and try. This will give a clear picture if its the new LCD or some other hardware.

Hey everybody,
my XPS 13 L322X Sputnik recently stopped working.
Syptoms:

When pressing the power button (on AC or on battery), the keyboard backlight turns on and the battery status indicator shows the battery status (blinking read when battery low and white when fully charged)
After a while, a fan spins up but otherwise no beep signal or anything like that can be heard
Neither the BIOS video output can be seen on the Laptops screen, nor the screens backlight. The screens remains perfect dark.
Pressing Fn+F6 doesn't turn the keyboard backlight off nor does any Fn+F* combo do anything perceivable
When i blindly enter my (software) disk decryption passphrase after a while of waiting (just as if only the display died and everything else was working normally), the laptop doesn't appear on the wifi network as it used to do automatically after bootup.
If i connect an external display to the laptop (which used to be working perfectly with it), no video signal can be seen on the external display

My assumption is that a loose screw  that i found inside the laptop (belonging to the mSata SSD card) after opening it had caused a short circuit and destroyed one component of the laptop. I am out of Dell Complete Care and would like to try a self-repair. Now the big question is: How can i conclude which part to replace?

Hi,
You are not hearing any beep codes at all on the system when trying to start it up?   Do you have any mini-Display Port capable monitors you an attach to it to see if the video is seen on an external display?   If no post  is happening, and thus no video to the screen, I would expect there to be diagnostic beeps coming from the system.
Here is a link to an article on No Power / No Boot troubleshooting that you may find helpful.  You may also want to go to the Dell Support Home page, type in your service tag, and take a look at the diagnostics that are available for that system.
I'm not sure that replacing the motherboard without confirming that an external monitor isn't receiving video would be what I would recommend.  On the support pages you'll find an owner's manual that will show you how to remove the battery in that system.  Have you tried removing that to see how the system responds?
Let me know what you've found out and I'll see if there are other ideas I can think of to help you.

Hi; new to the forum so apologies in advance for being clueless.

Massive thanks in advance to anyone who can try to help with my problem!

I've had this laptop just over a year and had no problems until recently, when I restored the machine to factory settings on the advice of a friend who works in IT (I'd had some problems, possibly AVG-related and couldn't boot up at all). No other changes have been made to hardware or software - in other words it's the same setup that's worked fine up until now.

At first (for 48 hours or so) everything seemed fine. Then, for several days after restoring the settings the laptop would boot to Windows but freeze up completely 2-3 minutes later and I had to power off and try again; I tried changing power usage and sleep / hibernate settings but the outcome was the same again and again and the amount of time before it froze wasn't sufficient for me to download updates or drives in case that is the problem. Once it froze I got no response from CTRL+ALT+Delete but if I C/A/D before the freeze I get a black screen (only the pointer visible) for 30 seconds, then an error message box saying "Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog - Failure - security options".

Finally I left the laptop on overnight to boot windows normally, since I'd noticed on occasion one or two functions did seem to be working, just extremely slowly. Now I have BSOD w/ messages and can't enter Safe Mode (the computer restarts and offers me... Read more

Can someone help me with this problem? So I just received my brand new Dell Inspiron 15 3000 and the battery is not charging. It says it's "Plugged In, Charging" but it never goes up and stays at 0%. At first I thought I just need to plug it in for several hours but it's been 5 hours now and still the battery stays at 0%. I tried running the BIOS Diagnostics just to see if there are problems and there's none. The battery status says everything is running normally and the Battery State says it's Idle. I tried draining the flea power several times, removing and reattaching the battery, but to no avail. I'm getting really frustrated and I'm really close to throwing this laptop back to Dell.
I read somewhere that I have to update the BIOS but it won't update unless the battery is charged at least 10%. Someone also suggested that Windows 8.1 is causing the problem. I haven't even started using this laptop and it's already giving me a *** ton of problems. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks guys! :)

As long as the battery is otherwise compatible -- and you realize it will increase the weight AND the size of the notebook (while the 4-cell likely fits entirely inside the system, the 6-cell will protrude from the back of the system), you will be fine.  There's also a big reason (safety among them) why OEM batteries cost more than third-party knockoff units, if that's a consideration.

Hello.
I've been using a Dell inspiron 1545 from about 3 years now and exactly after 2 years of my buy, the battery failed and it started showing me to replace the battery and always notified me about contacting dell for a new battery.
I didn't take this of much concern so i just ignored the message and kept on using my battery with my adapter plugged in. After 4-5 months of such usage, My battery completely failed and doesn't even offer me even a minute of backup, when i remove the power socket. Then i realized the importance of a new battery and then bought a new battery from Dell.
Its the same battery with the same specs and also the same family type. After i removed my defected battery, I replaced my new bought Dell battery and realized that my battery is working fine. its charging well but at some time, it says "Plugged in, But not charging" Which is rare for any new battery, which is bought brand new.

This is how it looks now after i remove the AC adapter plug and when i depend on the battery backup. it is providing me a backup, but I see a yellow exclamatory mark beside it. Which I think should not be present. it also says "Low battery" when there's already 99% of battery left!
I've also followed some online steps
1) updated by BIOS to the latest  2) Followed some other steps like uninstalling the battery ACI in the device manager and etc...

A:Bought a new dell battery and still my laptop battery doesn't charge!

Hi Utkarsh. I Actually FIXED this problem months back. and I exactly want to help you on this so that you can fix it yourself too..
the problem which is creating your battery to show an exclamatory mark is your power settings.
so follow these steps to get rid of that sign and a perfectly working battery.
1) Click on your battery icon (left click) you should see an option called " More power options" at the bottom of the popup.
click "More power options"
2) Now you will be taken to your control panel where you can see all of your power plans and under each plan, you will see an option called "Change plan settings"
3) Click on "Change plan settings" for your active power plan. Now you will get redirected to another control panel window, where you can see two kind of power options to get adjusted. that is, when you battery is plugged and when your battery is unplugged.
4) Don't touch those options, just click on "Change advanced power settings" at the bottom left of that window. THIS IS THE AREA WHERE WE NEED TO FIX!
5)After you click on "Change advanced power setttings", you will see a POWER options popup, go to the bottom and then you can see something called "Battery" with a plus sign on the left. click it.
6) Now you just have to change the levels for the following values
--> Critical battery level ( you can change it to 10%)

Any suggestions (maybe *another* new vid card???) are welcome. I can't seem to find any other places w/ this same issue, so maybe I'm just crazy.

The SF Diagnostic dump file is below:

Thanks!!!!

This one is pretty straight forward. Your video driver. specifically the directx component of it. I would go to their site. Get the un-install tool. to scrape all traces of this current driver off, and re-install a fresh copy. If this is happening frequently, I would also run
a system file check (type cmd in search>right click and run as admin>sfc /scannow
Also download memtestx86 and run for at least 5 passes to validate your ram.

If you are overclocking stop
If you are running a raid, update its driver.

Let us know if you need help with any of this

Hi i have a XPS M140 dell laptop, and bought a new battery, wich came charged to 40%, the instructions said that i should discharge the battery to 2% and then chargeit to 100% for first time.

I used the laptop withouth cord until it was 3%, then i plugged it but the amer light that should appear it is not when i plug the laptop with the battery installed, then i check the energy administrator (i have xp and lubuntu, and it both was the same) and it said "charging" but it stayed in 3%, i let it more than 12 hours plugged but never charged the battery, it is still in 3% and the light of the battery doesnt turn on.

I dont know if the battery is bad, because it worked when had charge, or is maybe the laptop that is not charging.

Is there a war to check if this port is charging electricity to the battery? i have a multimeter and i know how to open this laptop. Any information would be helpful as i havent been able to found information on this.

and also is there a way to know with the multimeter if the battery is allowing energy to charge it?

i hope you have understood, im still klearning english, thanks for your time

So, I bought this top of the line Latitude 12 M7 with 4K screen, and that was a biggest mistake for all...
The battery life is like 2h 2o min, and that horrible keyboard with a stand behind the screen is not user friendly. I can't even use it on my lap, and thank you for some "horrible" re-engineering design, the Latitude 12 doesn't have a keyboard like the 11 or 13 has! So no built in battery to power the tablet, and no regular laptop style closing lid. Why??? Why someone design something backwards ?
By any chance the Latitude 11 keyboard with the built in battery would fit with the 12? Or in the near future they will realize this model is way overpriced, and the battery life is a joke ?
I am at the point to sell this, forget about I7 and 4K and just buy a Latitude 13 6 gen M5 with a working battery life. Any of you have a suggestion, what I should do? Is any other model recommendation with size of 11-13 , with a decent battery life?

This is the second Laptop in the house to be raised as a fault on the forum. It is a Packard Bell, running Vista Home, over Virgin Media home Cable. The symptoms are;
System locking up when browsing. Trying to run the PCGuard Anti-Virus software scan fails half-way through by freezing. No key-presses are acknowledged and the only way to shut it down is a hard reboot (using the on/off switch).

NB. Sorry, the title said "VirusGuard" but it is PCGuard, provided by the ISP. Sorry for the incorrect title.

I recently made my first computer build but the windows keeps stop responding(the screen freezes and the mouse does not respond). I know it is not a hardware issue because I have other operating systems install on it and they work fine. Sometimes when it locks up I heard a buzzing sound from my sneakers. It happens every few hours and it is very annoying. I am forced to do a hard reset all the time(no bsod).I did many fresh install but had no luck.

I was trying to get a Trojan off my computer when half though my scan Kaspersky locked up. I rebooted and now I keep getting a "Kaspesky encounter a problem and needs to close. This message comes back over and over.

I have try everything to uninstall, repair, and even use the Kaspersky removal tool, nothing works, the removal Tool said it ran into a problem and needs to close. I tried to restore and this did not work. I have reboted over 20 times now.

Then I tried safe mode tried it 5 times, each time once I choose to do safe mode a blue screen appers saying A problem was detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

So to me this is what's happening, the program Kaspersky keeps crashing then it trys to install again then crashes. Once the window saying that it encounter the problem pops up then I say dont send error report in 1 min the window pops back up. becasue it allways trying to start up, I think is why I can not reinstall or unistall it. It just keeps trying to restart over and over. I cannot belive this, will someone help me either fix this or get this program off my computer so I can open my business back up.

I have some screen shots to show of the errors I?m getting.

My system admin (God bless his black heart!) decided that via Group policies all systems on our domain will lock after 15 minutes of inactivity. That's fine for our desktops, but I run a report server (Win 2000, upgrading to XP) that uses VB developed applications to generate Excel and Word reports vis OLE and emails them via Outlook (DDE) through a Microsoft Exchange Server. Now that the system locks every 15 minutes, the scheduled tasks still run, but the Outlook DDE hangs until someone logs back onto the server.

Any thoughts on how I can:

a) Keep the server from locking
b) Wakeup the server if locked programmaticly (sp?)
or
c) Adjust Outlook to function while the servere is locked.

Thanks in advance....jajmsdad

Hello,
I'm experiencing a very strange issue. Seems when I leave my computer on for a while (usually happens around 24 hours worth of use) I will return to the computer to find that I'm signed off of AIM, my webmail site is locked/not responding and I'm not getting any internet activity.

When this happens the computer is partially frozen (new tasks take longer to open and the computer becomes more locked up if I try to get into my internet connections options to repair/disable/enable the Local area connection device.

When I try to restart (all I can do) the computer will hang for a VERY long time and forces me to manually restart from the power/restart button on the tower.

Upon restarting the computer will usually hang on the black windows "loading" screen (blue scrolling loading bar) forever and I'll have to manually restart again for it to reboot and get past that screen on a second attempt.

In my system error log viewer I noticed a lot of errors and warnings.
The majority of them are These:

Hi. After upgrading BIOS to 2.12 the CPU frequency is locked to the lowest possible (disregarding BIOS settings). Plugging in the battery makes it work again. For the sake of prolonging my battery life I ususally run without it when safely docked at home.Anyone else experiencing this? I assume it's a bug?

A:Bios upgrade to 2.12 on T460p locks cpu frequency to lowest when running without battery

It sounds like a bug might have been fixed.  I would expect it to slow down if you had just a battery (no A/C) or just A/C (no battery).  The charhing circuity won't "cook" the battery.  It will stop charging when it is fully charged.

First we wil make an anti virus scan
We will then downloand malwarebytes and make a full scan
If these are negative, we will do a clean boot to help diagnose
If these do not work, try in safe mode and see what happens.

I have done the custom settings for battery from dell power management. I have set that the battery should start charging when it is at 50% and stop charging at 80%. When the battery has charged 80%.It has stopped charging. But the discharging of the battery is not happening itself. I have to remove the ac power so that the laptop should start using battery instead of ac power. The battery should self discharge when it reaches 80% and start charging when it reaches 50%. which is not happening currently. Can any suggest any solution.

A Dell customer service advisor recently suggested I buy a new battery to fix a problem with my battery not being recognised at system startup nor charging when the adapter is plugged in.
Despite my AC adapter being the original adapter that shipped with my computer, the new battery still fails to charge. I receive a message informing me that the AC adapter type cannot be recognised (quickset). Furthermore, in what can only be described as an outrageous step, this message informs me that Dell will throttle my machine ("your computer will run more slowly") and then battery will not charge.
Clearly there is an error in the adapter hardware (most likely related to the well known one wire technique for battery verification)  meaning it cannot be recognised by the computer. I was therefore incorrectly informed to buy a new battery that neither solves the problem nor is of any use as it cannot be charged. Is this how Dell treats their customers?
I propose two solutions which Dell could offer me:
1. Send me a new, working 150W adapter compatible with my XPS 17 as a gesture of goodwill following the incorrect sale of a new battery at great expense which failed to solve the problem.
2. Provide a way to circumvent the faulty charger verification process. This is crucial for two reasons. Firstly the adapter is the original adapter that came with my computer so to verify its authenticity is not necessary. Secondly, Dell has zero right (non, whatsoever) to force consumers ... I am no expert here, but it looks like the Update service is looking for a Recovery partition which may hold the WinRE tools.  On my current system, that would be partition 4 but it could be different on yours.  Running the command below in an administrative command prompt should show what partition is configured for the Tools.
reagentc /info
Have you made any changes to your drive configuration?  The reagentc info should show the same partition the Update Utility is looking for.

A:Dell Inspiron 8100 locks up...

Dude. Nothing wrong in HackJackThis list you have given to us.

Freezing up normaly results in Networking, power supply or Memory problem. Turn off your PC, and open the case. Remove the dust. Remove and put back the memory, and try again.

If same thing occurs, I wouldn't bother and reinstall Windows.

Same thing occurs, I would put a nice power bar attached to your PC.

Same thing occurs, change the power supply.

Same things occurs, you're screwed. ;-)

As fate would have it, the warranty expired on the 15th of July - The computer is a Dell Inspiron laptop - running windows XP. After being left online overnight in a hotel with wireless internet it locked up. Currently we get different results (but all results end in a lock up at the windows screen) - usually it comes up with a screen saying "we apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this" (no new hardware or software was installed prior to lockup) It gives you options to try to start - (I can't remember what all it said - but safe mode was a choice and going back to a prior time was a choice) Usually it is just locked up and you can't click on anything. Once I did get it to go to safe mode and I tried to do a system restore - It did go through all the motions of doing a system restore - but when rebooted - the same "we apologize" error was there - WHen I can click on a starting option it goes to the windows screen - the blue line runs for a few seconds - then it just locks up. Dell wants a small fortune to help me over the phone. This is my son's college computer. I was thinking he probably picked up a virus when he was online in the hotel. Is that possible? It has let me get into set up by pressing F2 during boot - but I have no idea what to do there (if anything) F12 is another option it gives - but it wont do anything when I push that. Any advice???... Read more

Recently, I am having issues with my Inspiron 1501 (running Windows XP Pro with service pack 3) blacking out the screen and locking up the computer while I am in the middle of doing something or doing nothing (computer sitting idle). There is no rhyme nor reason that I have been able to determine. The computer could have been on for hours or a relatively short amount of time. The only way to get this to clear is to hold the power button down until the computer shuts down. I can then press the power button again and the computer comes right back up with no errors or messages or hard drive check for shutting down improperly. There is nothing there, it isn't a matter of it just isn't visible (some threads have suggested looking at the screen with a flashlight or hooking up an external monitor, neither changed the issue). I have checked power management settings and it isn't set to go into hibernation, do anything when the lid is closed, and to ask what to do when the sleep button is pressed.

Also, when I shut down (Window logo key -> Turn off computer -> Shutdown), it starts out as normal and then gets to a point and freezes/locks up. I seem to recall this at the final step before the computer should shut off. Again, the only way to shut down is to hold down the power button. Same thing applies...I can press the power button and the computer comes right back up with no errors or messages or hard drive check for shutting down improperly.

Dear Sir(s),

A:Optiplex 780, locks up at Dell logo

Hello deltaepsilon613
I really haven't had this issue with my dell OptiPlex 780 which I bought when it was new though you may be in trouble. If you've flashed any rom's to the bios they might have not installed correctly so you'd need to contact dell. Now, if the dell logo stays and the bar moves very slowly then you might have disabled quickboot in system setup meaning your computer might be doing a full boot and taking forever. lastly if this is not the case press F12 while you see the del logo then your machine should beep and you'll see some options select your hard disk and the machine shall boot.
