Stuck undoing updates, can't restart in safe mode. 8.1

Q: Stuck undoing updates, can't restart in safe mode. 8.1

After trying to update yesterday I got the "couldn't update, undoing changes" message. I let it finish and restart and it just goes back to the same undoing changes message. I tried restarting in safe mode but couldn't do that either. The only thing I can get into is bios after I restart it.

Preferred Solution: Stuck undoing updates, can't restart in safe mode. 8.1

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, all. I heard about this forum a few months ago when my sister came here for help with her laptop; now it's my turn. Forgive the long post, but this has been a long process that I've been trying to fix for almost a week now; I hope someone here will be able to help me out, too.I'm running Windows XP (I can't recall the Service Pack, but I believe it's 3; I always make sure I keep Windows updated and keep Automatic Updates turned on) Home Edition on a Lenovo J115, Machine Type 7387.Long story short, I was stupid and let my Norton subscription run out and suddenly, I got hit with Antivir 2010. That in and of itself was a grueling process; Antivir's a nasty little thing and wouldn't even let me open programs or open up the Task Manager, so after every restart, I'd literally have to open the programs as soon as I saw my desktop wallpaper pop up; if I waited too long, Antivir would start up and block all processes again. The virus was also preventing me from booting up in Safe Mode, and would force a restart of the computer every time I tried. After using CCleaner, MalwareBytes, HiJackThis, and PCTool's Spyware Doctor, I thought I had finally fixed the problem. Antivir was gone, and my computer was finally back to normal.Well, that's what I thought, anyway.I had to update Spyware Doctor's definition files, and I also updated my Firefox; both of these programs require a system restart, so, thinking everything was back to normal, I ... this is a many faceted and increasing in facets issue (ill try to make it as short as possible);

the male side of my video cable connection (the part on the motherboard) had bent pins; the pins were unbent and the cable was able to fit back in, BUT

the picture was garbled--wrong colors, moving lines, etc. the people at a tech store told me the video cable was pinched and knowing that it had been jammed in the hinge for a while, i believed it extremely feasible. I finally ordered a new video cable but replaced it, and to no avail. the picture may have been slightly better--but not significantly if so; additionally (and im not sure if it was this way the first time as well) the computer was displaying at the size of the external.

i restarted, and reazlied that the laptop screen displayed nothing at startup, until logged in--exactly like the external. i figured that at least a portion of what was going on was the computer was sending the external screen signal to the laptop.

things i've tried:

-reseating both ends of the new video cable MANY times
-turning the computer off, taking out battery, holding start button, putitng battery back in, restarting
-every variation of screen resolution/external monitor setting
-pluggin in the external, putting laptop to sleep, unpluggnig external
-reinstalling video/image drivers
function key combinations

when i tried to put in safe mode via F8, the screen went blue or light gray and stayed that w... Read more

After a power outage 3 weeks ago I was having issues with the system going down at around 5 minutes and then less and less time after that. I was told it was a display issue and to uninstall and reinstall my display drivers. I uninstalled my drivers and it was still the same. I felt like it was temperature related. I found my graphics card (Radeon 5700) was dirty. I cleaned it and thought I was back in business. Everything was back to normal, all I needed to do was update my graphics drivers. Once that was done, my computer would no longer load past the Windows splash screen.

I used Puppy Linux on a flash drive and I have access to everything. I can use the internet and access all my files. This to me says that it is not a hardware issue.

The fact that when I try to go into safe mode it gets stuck for more than a day on classpnp.sys (when I finally give up). I understand that classpnp.sys has loaded but, there is something after that that the computer can't load. I have seen some people have atipcie.sys load after classpnp.sys and it makes sense to me that it would be a graphics driver that is causing the issue.

I need my Windows 7 up and running for school and work projects. Any ideas, thoughts, or help would be greatly appreciated.

I tried using the driver CD to see if it will help with anything rebooting and I did some Express Test. It gave me this code:
Error Code:    650F:136C
Msg:    IDE device failed. Blank media or no media is present in optical drive. Test requires media with data (Resource CD, Installation CD).
Have no clue what it is. Ive done some reading on Mup.sys. It requires me to remove some 'USB card'. I dont really see any . Any advice would be appreciated or if you have anymore further queries let me know.

A:Stuck on Mup.sys (during safe mode) and stuck on Windows XP loading screen.

HI Jon,
Thats not  a error to worry about.
That error comes up when u run express test on the computer and the cd drive is empty.
Are we working on a notebook or a desktop.
And mup.sys is a system file .You can repiar mup.sys by following these steps.
1>Start the computer from the Windows Xp CD.2>At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to repair. 3>At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: ren c:windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys mup.old4>At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:expand <cd-romdrive>:\i386\mup.sy_ c:\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys5>After the file is successfully expanded, type exit, and then press ENTER to exit Recovery Console. 6>Restart the computer.

Honestly, I really don't know where to begin. Every time I try to run my computer in normal mode it restarts and gives me options to run in different safe modes or try normal mode again. My computer runs perfectly fine in safe mode. I haven't added any new programs. It's been this way for some time. I'm currently running sfc /scannow to see if this helps, which I seen it helped on a similar forum on bleepingcomputer. If anyone has anything else to contribute, please feel free.

I have Thinkpad T43, with windows XP professional.

Since few days whenever i launched my ATI catalyst control center I would get BSOD and laptop will boot automatically and then everything would be fine.

Then while browsing my wife downloaded some media player exe, and since then my IE was redirecting to unknown sites (xalab etc) not to mention various ad pop-ups. One of the online video sites gave a message that I have TROJ/Rustok-N. (Also I would like to mention since couple of months my System Restore was not working although everything else was working fine)

I ran spybot, malawarebytes, trojanremover and removed whatever was reported. But the problem persisted, so I renewed my Norton Internet Security (actually got Norton 360), ran scans but it couldnt find anything.

Then I booted in safe mode and ran all these again, last thing I remember trojanremover prompted to remove something like sv~.exe and i did, when i restarted the system in normal mode I got BSOD and laptop rebooted, I disabled automatic restart on failure but it keeps on doing that.

I then went to Access IBM and restored by configuration which brings back the system files to previous state (the most latest point available was 07/2006)
I still got the BSOD while booting into normal mode, but safe mode was working fine.

I then went into safe mode and disabled couple of services on startup, then my laptop booted fine in normal mode, I found that now windows xp was reset to SP2, so i ran windows update w... Read more

Hi, today I decided to restart my PC but it got stuck at the "logging off" screen, so I just held down power button to turn it off.
When I tried turning it back on, it got stuck at the windows logo. Safe-mode won't work, nor will system recovery.Note: I had not made any hardware changes in the past 3 years. I also don't think I have made any big software changes in the past couple of weeks.
What I was doing before I decided to reboot:
I was reinstalling different versions of firefox because I was having flash issues (FF and Flash arent very compatible on some of the newer FF versions)
So I installed 30.0 and it asked me reboot to finish the installation and here I am. I don't think it's related, might be just a coincidence.
Full details of what is happening:
Normal boot-up freezes at the windows7 logo. The animation freezes too. PC does not auto re-boot.
Safe-mode gets stuck while loading components. Notably at storport.sys (not sure if I spelt that right) PC does not auto re-boot.
System recovery freezes after a while during the © Mircosoft Corporation screen with green loading bar. PC does not auto re-boot.
The little light that flickers when the PC is doing something is not lighting up during the loading screens. It flickers for the first couple of seconds and then just stops (or very faintly flicks every 3-4 secs) The loading screen animation then freezes after ~10-15 seconds.

So, since yesterday, Windows 8.1 tries to boot, then gets halfway through, shows a sad face for a second, and then restarts. It does this again and again. Just get the message "Failure configuring Windows updates. Undoing changes. Don't turn off your computer" then "Configuring Windows updates, 30% complete. Don't turn off your computer".
Then it boots, does the same thing again.
I've tried booting from the install media, but Refresh doesn't work, nor restarting in safe mode. Weirdly, pressing F2 to load BIOS, which always used to work, no longer does, it just continues trying to load Windows.
I've got an oldish PC, around 4/5 years old, with Windows 8 installed. Its got a fairly decent processor (at the time), a Q9550. Intel DP43TF motherboard.
Any ideas?

I've had this computer for roughly 3 years now and really haven't had any problems with it other then the occasional accidental hit of the sleep mode button. Now usually when I hit the sleep button, the computer will be very difficult to get out of sleep and I will normally end up turning it off completely and then turnin it back on. This has worked fine for me up until the last time I restarted the computer. Now when I go to turn the computer on the light on the computer starts orange (normally blue when started) which normally shows me the computer is sleeping. The monitor also does the same thing. I can hear the fans running but have no other options besides completely turning the computer off via the power button.

If anyone can help solve this problem??
As long as I keep my pc on, everything seems ok. Once I shut down, I must go into Safe Mode and make even one change in msconfig, then restart in normal mode, and all is fine again, but only AFTER I reset Services in Computer Management in which almost all services become disabled. If I try rebooting without going into Safe Mode, it takes forever (25 minutes) to get to my desktop, and even then, although Im able to get online, once online my start button along with other clicks in my start menu become stuck and take perhaps 5 minutes to open. But as I said, if I go into Safe Mode first, after shutting down (or even restarting) and make change in msconfig and restart in normal mode, and reset SERVICES, all is fine again. But I shouldnt have to go through all this every day. Its very time consuming.
McAfee reporst no problems. Spybot Search and Destroy reports clean and so does Lavasoft Adaware.

A:Help! PC freezes unless I use Safe Mode first then restart

What is the make/model of your PC? What are you changing with the services in Safe Mode that allows you to boot-up in normal mode? Are you enabling a service? This may just be an issue of something being forced by msconfig that needs to be altered and saved. There are essential services that you NEED for windows to run in Normal mode so it's possible that you disabled something in MSCONFIG that shouldn't have been disabled.

Reply and let me know what you're changing in SAFE MODE to get the PC to boot in Normal mode.

I've encountered a similar problem with an endless rebooting cycle on my desktop. Dell GX 260

When I purchased my computer about three years ago, I bought it from someone at work and didin't receive the operating disks for Windows XP. I was wondering if I could just purchase Windows XP Pro software and follow the same steps to repair my computer - Recovery Disk/Repair XP? Or, wil I have to do a complete re-install and loose all of the files/data that are currently on the hard drive?

I had a similar problem back in Feb. and when I had a computer guy come out to repair it, he recommended that I purchase an external HD to avoid future situations like this. I do have an external HD with data from a few months ago on it but I see from my system BIOS that I cannot boot from a USB device - only allows HD, CD-ROM and floppy. Oh well, live and learn.

For what you wanted, you could create .bat files to do this from OPTION THREE in the tutorial below. You'll need to set the .bat files to Run as administrator for them to work.

To Restart back in Normal Mode:

Hey there...

I'm a little stuck and confused about what to do with my HP W8 laptop.

Ive had this issue several times before.

Basically go to restart laptop and it slowly starts downloading updates, but eventually gets stuck on a page saying unable to complete updates, Undoing changes dont turn off your computer. Ive tried a lot of things suggested on other forums but I keep ending up back to this screen.
If anyone could help offer some guidance as to what else I could do itd be very very appreciated

A:Stuck on Undoing Changes

I was able to get to another option screen and enabled safe mode as I read on another site but it just returns me to the same undoing changes screen

Being "stuck" in safe mode generally indicates that one of the main system files (usually called DLLs) is damaged or missing, or that a piece of the computer's hardware is not operating properly. This latter condition could be caused by either a failure in the device or by a missing or improper device driver.

I'd recommend going back to a restore point ......

Start / Run at the prompt type scanreg/restore follow prompts for restore point etc.

I am having trouble with a friends pc, it will only start in safe mode, but without any icons or start button, task bar, etc, just a grey background.
When I restart, it goes to an options list, 1 Normal 2 Bootlog 3 Safe Mode 4 Step by step, selecting any of the options just brings the same result mentioned above.
I need to try and recover out of this and save important data before I reload windows, (Me)

I can't get out. I restored my computer from a time before i used the technique fixcd.reg. i just want out of safe mode. im trying to set my printer up for college which starts next monday and if anybody can help me before i have to go spend money to get it fixed would be soooo helpful and maybe solve my cd/dvd rom drive problem too. well lets just fix safe mode first. thanks in advance.

A:HELP?!?! I'm stuck in Safe Mode

Have you tried this? Last known configuration.
1. Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer.

Click the Start button , click the arrow next to the Lock button , and then click Restart.

2. Do one of the following:

If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you will need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.

If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to start, and then press F8.
3. On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.

4. If your computer has more than one operating system installed, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system that you want to start by using Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER. Windows will then resume starting normally.

hi. i need help. i downloaded something which i did on safe mode now its just stuck on safe mode. i swtich my computer on and it will load up untill the logon and i would type my password but then nothing will happen after that it will be blank with safe mode on each corner. is there any way where i can get my computer back how it was before i installed these files. thanks your help will be appriciated much.

A:Need help stuck in safe mode

Tap the f8 key prior to windows loading, then select normal mode.
You say you downloaded something in safe mode, why? And did you
install that something, and what was it and why? If you did not install
that something I cant see a reason why it would want to keep you in
safe mode, simply by downloading.

I have a malware issue on a computer. I was in the process of fixing it when I tried to restart the computer in safe mode. The typical press F8 at the beginning of bootup did not work so I went to msconfig and told it to boot in safe mode. When I restarted, it did go into safe mode like I had hoped. However, I was not thinking ahead very far. This computer is connected to a domain so the user name and password I was using was from the network active directory. When going into safemode, obviously that will not get me logged in to the computer. The problem is that I did not load the OS originally and never logged in locally so I do not know a user name or password to allow me to log in. So now I am stuck with the computer booting in safe mode and no way to change it. Do you know of any ways to get past this? Please HELP.

I have been trying to reinstall Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop. I was working under Safe Mode per someone's instruction's I have found out knows less than myself. I put the Windows XP disk in and it went through everything just fine. Now I am getting an error message saying " Windows XP cannot run under Safemode. Setup will restart now." the only option is to say okay. However I am in a loop right now. I say okay and it restarts itself and comes right back to that prompt.

I have gifted this laptop to a special needs young lady and so I desperately need help in getting it back and up running for her for summer school. Any help with be met with gratitude.

Thank you very much.

A:Stuck in Safe Mode

Being "stuck" in safe mode could indicate that one of the main system DLL files is damaged or missing. Or it could mean that a piece of the computer's hardware is not operating properly. This latter condition could be caused by either a failure in a device; or a device driver could be missing or a the wrong version.

Boot your computer and pay close attention to determine why it is booting up that way. There might be some sort of an error message telling you what is wrong and why safe mode is being chosen.

Write down any message and let us know what you find out.

Here is another option that might resolve the problem.
