I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

HI, I have a Thinkpad T570 with an i7 processor, 16 RAM and NVIDA GeForce 940MX. I bought the computer last september and two weeks ago the computer started shutting down unexpectedly. I've ran hardware scans, both thru vantage and the startup and the sfc scan, but every scan comes up with nothing. The computer sometimes shutsdown during logon, but sometimes it could take hours before it unexpectadly shuts down. Today i reset the computer completly and during the setup of the computer shutdown 3-4 times before i could finish setting up. Currently i got it working again, but the computer still shuts down intermittely. Looking at the event viewer event 161 shows up before the computer shuts down as event 41. Please help, i'm tired of trubleshooting and having the computer shutdown

I recently upgraded my pc.Since then, whenever i turn my PSU on, it automatically boots my pc even if I still havent switch my pc (case) on.

A:pc wont shutdown.

Make sure your power plan and options are to your specifications.

It is posssible PC goes to either sleep or hibernation when you "shut down" and wakes up (by default)when you try to shut down thru Power Button.

Shut down is preferrably done thru Start button > shut down.

Also, when you program Power Plan, do not enable any program to wake up your system.

PS...are you sure it re-starts or reboots, instead of "resume".

Hey all....

Got a pal that has a problem with his system not shutting down properly all the time. Here is what he says....

"For some reason ever since I reloaded my computer, my shutdown takes...well.....forever. I press shutdown using the Start>Shutdown, method and I will literally have to do this 5-10 times, and then wait about 5-10 minutes for it to actually do it.

No, I dont have a lot of services running. Just my Logitec keyboard/mouse service, my firewall service, and the normal Microsoft services."

System Specs....
I am running 2 gigs of DDR3200 ram in dual-sync mode.

Virus scan is AVG and its not running. I only turn it on to run a scan. Its updated everytime I open it. This was my first idea that it was a virus but nothing comes up.

A:Wont shutdown.....

Go to Start/Run and type: msconfig and press OK. Under the Startup Tab, clear everything. Exit out and try the Shutdown. If the computer shuts down normally, then something that list is causing it. If not, re-enable all and do a full virus scan. I have seen this just the other day and while a trojan will do this, in my case it was an HP printer file hanging the shutdown. Took it out of Startup and the computer worked fine.

Understand, the computer will probably hang the first time you reboot because everything in Msconfig is still running. You'll have to try after a restart again to see if it worked.

Surely it wasn't like that out of the box was it? What has been installed since? And have you tried a System Restore?

Try "clean boot" troubleshooting:

You may have to intitially force a shutdown by holding down the power button for 5 to 8 seconds. This is not damaging.

hello, first of all, im dealing with an emachines t5048a, 3.06ghz 1gb of ram, 160gb hard drive, running windows xp media center edition,

this problem just started recently, and only happens once in a while, but its been happening more and more often now,

when i go to click start, then click "turn off computer" the screen goes black and white (like normal) then the screen comes up that gives me the option to shutdown, log off, or standby, no matter what i click, the computer does nothing, well actually, it does, the black and white screen goes away and it goes right back into windows, it will not let me shut it down, log off, or go to standby,

normally when i press the power button on my computer, my computer shuts down like its supposed to, when this is going on and i press the power button, it does nothing, it acts like the button isnt even there

any suggestions??

A:wont log off/shutdown

Any new software/hardware added in the past 6 months or so? And do you hold in the power button, or just press and release? Has there been a noticable slowdown while doing things lately (opening applications, etc)? You said it is happening more often now. How often does it do this?

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Here is a link to troubleshooting shutdown issues

Also, Run the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized) (Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

In all likelihood you will be prompted to insert the Windows XP CD.

Issue is that after shutdown the system does not turn off. Fans still spin lights stay on cdrom still opens and closes.

Have updated BIOS, Changed power settings within Win8.1.

Changed out PSU for an EVGA 650W Gold PSU from my system and starts up and shuts down without an iussue. So i think Thermaltake PSU stuffed.

Exchanged Thermatake PSU for a new one from shop where I purchased it and put into system only to have this same issue.

So is it possible that the two thermaltake PSU are duds or cut my losses and chuck in a 750W PSU?

Any help would be appreciated.

is there a way to sort this?

I would boot up into safe mode on your next restart and do a diagnostic startup option in msconfig. Once you boot into normal windows I would start enabling startup items one at a time and rebooting to see if any of those are hanging your system. Also check your power settings.

Hello, i am new to the forum and was wondering if anyone can help me,

I am fixing a computer and the problem it has is once the computer has been on for about 30 min or longer once its shutdown it wont boot back up, this is a propershutdown then pressing the button to reboot. what it does is it beeps three times (which for the bios means bad memory). Once left for about an hour it boots back up.
I have changed the memory and it still has the same problem.
Could it be the actual slots?
i thought it may be the cpu overheating or something but wouldnt it then shutdown while its on?

Hi. I have been having an issue on another computer that has been driving me crazy. It wont shutdown or restart!!! Can run updates, add/remove programs, not even change some startup settings because it just wont go through the full paces.

So far i have tried going into run, services.msc, and looked into the NVIDIA driver helper that i read somewhere else but it keeps coming up with a plug and play fault and is already disables regardles.

Also looked into power settings.

I changed the startup so it would run as little programs as possible and now i cant get on the internet. Somehow that restart caught after i changed the startup settings and now it wont change back. Says it needs a full restart first.

Please help!

I feel the need to post to this thread.

although it seems that ggireland found a solution for him, a hard to believe one at that, but I still have machines that do this.

it is not a power management problem, it is not a system failure (stop error), we do not run Roxio of any kind. and it just started happening when sp4 was installed. we run w2k on all machines. it is not a driver issue either.

we have 100's of machines and only a handful are doing it. some machines are different as far as Mhz go. we run Compaqs and I have seen Deskpro and Evos do it. we image all our machines with Ghost and one Evo can do it while another will not.

so anything other ideas?

I recently built a new PC and I am having an issue. When I shutdown the PC through the Vista Shut-down option my computer goes through the normal "Shutting down screen" but it frequently does not shut completely down. All fans are still running and the Optical Drives are powered. Their is no hdd activity. Has anyone got any idea what might be causing this? It will eventually shut itself completely off. Sometimes within minutes but often it takes hours.

Things I have eliminated:

1)It is not in Sleep/hibernate mode
2)It is not the mobo
3)It is not my ram
4)It is not the HDD
4)It is not Vista or any of the updates

Hi all,

I have an issue with a friends computer (running Vista) I have been trying to work on. It started with the shutdown button, log off etc... not being there when you accessed it through the start menu. Task manager also was greyed out. This was fixed editing the registry.

At the same time he was unable to get onto the internet. To get him back online I remove ZoneAlarm as it was clashing with F-Secure provided to him by his ISP.

I came round again as he claled me up to say he was unable to shutdown again nor get on the internet. I then removed System Mechanic as he had run this whilst I wasn't present, internet started and shutdown optiosn were back again.

Once again I have been called up as it wont get onto the internet and although the shutdown option is there it wont allow the PC to shutdown.
Now all thats running that I can think of that's stopping it is either F-Secure or a Sidebar gadget that he uses to speed up the PC (this gadget cleans the registry apparently and temp files etc... cant remember its name though).

Other than removing these what else could causse this? (it's not spyware etc... PC has been scanned for these).

The laptop will not completely shutdown. Could be something else but I don't know. So I am looking for help. HELP!!.

Daemon Tools (also Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Win7 systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although we have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions). Please uninstall Daemon Tools. DuplexSecure - FAQ

Hi All,

I'm having an issue where after I have connected to my office network my USB ports seem to stop working and the laptop will not shutdown.

The USB ports that were connected to devices prior to connecting to the office network keep working but no new devices are detected.

When shutdown the laptop sits at the shutting down screen indefininately.

I have had this issue with two HP laptops now but other within the office are using the same laptops without fault. Also I have had this laptop for a few months now without fault.

I dont have auto updates turned on so it shouldn't be something intorduced by an update.

Please help!!!

My 4 year old HP Spectre xt 15 4011nr has a 500gb Hitachi hard drive with a 30gb seperate ssd cache in it.
2 months ago I switched out the HD and put a Sandisk 480gb SSD in it. Then a week and half maybe in, the computer when I close the lid or click sleep/shutdown/hibernate, the computer will attempt to do it and the screen will turn off as normal but the computer is still running. It sometimes will not stop running unless I force shutdown with the power button. Sometimes it will shutdown regardless weather I clicked shutdown or sleep but that means I got a BSOD of driver power state failure and then it just turns off. The laptop runs fine other than that.
So I contacted microsoft chat support and they weren't too much help but they said my SSD could be the cause but I'm sure it's not. BUT I switched the sandisk SSD with a Samsung 850 evo but it had the same issue. I even went back to the HD temporarily because that never had the issue but it was still not turning off correctly.
I even refreshed my pc but keeping my personal files and that still didn't fix it.
I assume it is my hardware but how can I figure out what hardware it is that is causing it?
Here is my crash dump file if you want to look at it.  https://www.dropbox.com/s/z6eghde8nho4v2l/091216-6984-01.dmp?dl=0
