Defender auto turn on

Q: Defender auto turn on

How do I turn on Windows Defender spyware, malware in Windows Security Center automatically w/o having to do it manually everytime on turn on my comp.?

Preferred Solution: Defender auto turn on

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello awlmyne,
Open Windows Defender by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs and then clicking Windows Defender.
Click Tools, and then click Options.
Under Administrator options, select the Use Windows Defender check box, and then click Save. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
This should then enable you to see in Windows Security Centre - Malware Protection -
"Windows Defender is turned on."

[When Windows Defender is on, you will be alerted when spyware and other potentially unwanted software tries to install itself, run on your computer, or change important Windows settings. If you use the default settings, Windows Defender will also check for new definitions, regularly scan for spyware and other potentially unwanted software, and automatically remove any detected item that has a recommended removal action.]
Hope that helps.

Hello. is it possible to set windows defender to auto update without having auto updates turn on, i have microsoft update set to ask me first but would like to allow defender to update without asking hope that make some sense to someone

A:defender auto update

Hello baccini,
Your question is ambivalent.... to this one. I don't use Defender.
{The purpose of having an auto update facility turned on is to allow a program to do just that.}

I would suggest you consider an alternative to Defender.

Two free programs for you to check out & choose one from { if you are so inclined} are SuperAntiSpyware & Malwarebytes.
Both work happily with Win 7.

I have set Defender to do a quick scan in task scheduler for 1 AM. Auto Maintenance is set for 3 AM. I got up this morning to check Defender to verify the newly created quick scan and it was successful but stated it ran at 3 AM. Since I have allowed system to 'wake up' from sleep to do the quick scan, I am afraid the laptop is being awakened at both 1 AM by task scheduler and 3 AM by Auto Maintenance. Any ideas or should I leave this alone?[QUOTE=ARC1020;163739]It runs as part of Automatic Maintenance, which IIRC runs daily when your computer is idle.

A:Auto Maintenance and Defender

Shawn, although your article was very well done and helpful to most, I now realize that Automatic Maintenance already does a Quick Scan at 3:00 AM. I created a detailed task setting up Triggers, Actions and such for it take wake at 2:00 AM to do a Quick Scan. This is redundant. I need help to disable this newly created task and return to normal. Also, I don't know if this matters but I never wrapped the default path in quotes under program/script. It still runs a Quick Scan at 2:00 AM like I set it though. Please help me delete this creation without deleting the system command that had Defender do a Quick Scan as part of Automatic Maintenance.

I am using Vista Home Premium on my Acer laptop, and have found that Windows Defender does not automatically scan even though it is scheduled to do so.

It was fine up until I tried to install Vista Service Pack 1, and found that I lost my internet, so I uninstalled it. Since then, I have had the problem with Windows Defender - this may not be the case, but it is just a theory.

I have tried System Restore, but that didnt work - aparantely because you cannot use System Restore with Acer - Acer said I could set it back to factory settings but I dont want to go to all that trouble.

Any ideas or suggestions please?

I have just started to use Windows Defender on W8.1 and cannot see a way to get it to auto update without getting all the other Windows updates to auto update as well. I prefer to manage the general Windows updates myself and decide when (or if) to apply them. However, like other AV products, I would lIke it to update automatically.

Any thoughts on how to do this - it must be able to do it

A:Auto update Windows Defender

I thought it did by itself? First off, you can set windows updates to only install important updates, and uncheck the box that says give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates. That way you do not have to install recommended updates. Important updates should be installed no matter what, they protect your computer, etc.

If you don't want to do that, then see if it auto-updates despite the windows update being off, on its own. Give it a few days. If it does, you got it! If not, there is a high high chance you cannot do anything to keep it updated, as it is a built in windows feature

Hello Kwitel, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Do you have a 3rd party AV program installed? Usually a new OEM PC will come with a trial AV program installed.

Some 3rd party antivirus (AV) programs may turn off Windows Defender when they are installed to be used instead, and will not allow Windows Defender to be turned back on until the 3rd party AV has been completely uninstalled.

What could be causing this? My school requires us to have some "SafeConnect" program on our computer in order to connect to the internet there, but I uninstalled it as I'm home for the weekend and am trying to figure out why this is happening. Thanks.

I have an Acer laptop computer running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I use Microsoft Security Essentials as my anti-virus and anti-malware programs (I believe that Windows Defender is part of MSE). Last night I opened the Action Center and under the Security section, looked at the status of MSE and Windows Defender. The status window showed me that MSE was "On" but Windows Defender was "Off". I selected it and then clicked the button to turn it on, but the status remained "Off". I closed the Action Center and a short time later an information window popped up telling me that Windows Defender had stopped working. I was informed that I could restart it by rebooting, which I did. After the reboot, I looked in the Action Center again and saw that it was still in the "Off" state.
I decided that the program might have gotten corrupted somehow, so I decided to uninstall MSE and then download it again and reinstall. I did this and everything went fine. However, the Action Center still told me that Windows Defender was "Off" and I still couldn't turn it on.
The only reason that I could think of for this is that there is some other anti-malware program running. About a year ago, I purchase Malwarebytes and installed it on my main desktop computer, and I thought that I had also installed it on the laptop as well, but if I go into Programs and Features, there is no evidence of it. If you check this out:  http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_defender-protect_start/windows-defender-is-off-i-cant-turn-it-on/1d7ef840-e355-40f7-8aeb-225f86cbd821
Best explanation for this is right here:
It's not really a problem, neither with Norton nor with Microsoft Security Essentials. It's by design.
Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG, Norton, and McAfee all turn off Defender. That's good, not bad. Not only is there potential conflict, but there's no reason to have both; they all essentially have something very similar to Defender built into them, and running both at once will hurt your performance and create the risk of problems as they conflict with each other.
Even if this wasn't the case, I wouldn't worry too much about it.  Windows Defender sucks anyway.

So today my McAfee trial expired, using the removal tool I uninstalled it before attempting to switch on windows defender.

I try the command prompt method to enable windows defender and it also does not work
I try running a scan via command prompt and it tells me some corrupt files have been found
I have also tried changing the start up setting from manual to automatic but I cannot seem to do this as the option is greyed out
Is malware causing the prevention of windows defender being switched on? Bearing in mind my computer has recently had a reboot and also works at top speed.

It was working last night then I decided to refresh my PC. I installed several programs including drivers, windows updates and Malware Bytes (No Anti-virus installed).

I always get the response "The service couldn't be started. This programs service has stopped. You can start the service manually or restart your computer, which will start the service."

I also deactivated UAC.

Running Windows 8.1 on Dell XPS bot last fall. Have been running Windows Firewall and Window Defender from the beginning.

Last week, "Solve PC Issues" notifications on bottom bar indicated Windows Defender turned off. Clicked the "Turn On Now" button. Got following pop-up message:
An error has occurred in the program during
initialization. If this problem continues please
contact your administrator. Error code 0x80073b01

Went to control panel > system and security > action center. Same message in notifications. Clicked "Turn on Now" from there - same result. Also tried to turn on as administrator (I am the moron administrator). Same result.

I never ran another anti virus program on this computer. None are listed among programs for deletion (maybe one came with, but I don't see it and never activated it). I did not ever turn off Defender. I do have the Spybot free program installed, but that has been on since beginning of February with no problems, and I think it only runs manually when I do a scan (it is more anti-malware I think, not full always running anti-virus).

Suggestions? Help? (Please). Thanks, Lazlo

I can't get Windows Defender to start through the Action Center. When I turn it on, it just brings me to the system32 folder.

Any ideas? Do I need to do a clean install? I used to have avast installed, but have uninstalled it. If I can't get windows defender to work should I install something else?

After Norton expires, restart (reboot) the system. Defender should automatically turn on. Opening Defender (in search, type DEFENDER. App will be at top) should look like this.

If Defender is off, it will look like this. Click Turn On. You may also receive a notification banner in lower right of desktop.

As a side note, if Norton is set to expire in a couple of weeks (around month end), you may want to consider just disabling it now and uninstalling and setting up Defender. On 8/02/16, there is a major Windows 10 update scheduled. Just a suggestion to avoid having to deal with both at the same time. TC

Restart the computer and then check how it works.Method 2:Perform System File Check (SFC), and then check if this fixes the issue.Follow the steps:a. Press “Windows Key + Q” to open Charms Bar.b. Type “cmd” without quotes in the search box.c. On the left pane, right click on the “cmd” option and select “Run as Administrator”.d. Type ‘sfc /scannow’ without quotes and hit enter.Note: It may ask for windows installation DVD to fix and to enable SFC to make more than minor repairs. Some files saved on your computer might get deleted when fixing corrupted files.

Hi guys!

I'm new to the forums (first post) so please be kind, haha!

I have recently built a PC myself and had no issues whatsoever, until the other day when an Action Centre notification popped up. For some reason, Spyware and Virus protection have both turned off automatically and when I am prompted to turn them back on, I get an error saying "Action Centre can't turn on Windows Defender. Please try again later."

I have tried the services.msc method and tried to activate WinDefend that way, but encounter another error "Windows could not start the WinDefend service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."

I have looked up this issue with no resolution yet - as most of the solutions are for people that have installed third party Protection Programs like AVG, Norton etc.

I haven't installed any programs like that, and have also checked in the Control Panel to make sure one didn't install itself automatically with an install of another program.

If anyone could help me out with some tips, that would be greatly appreciated.

A:Cannot turn on Windows Defender

Hey mate,

This is not a solution to your problem, but hear me out. Consider another AV for a moment. I used to use Defender exclusively until I met Avast!, which runs faster than Defender and is better at catching malware, as numerous tests show. So I would recommend installing both Avast! and another program called Mbam from Malwarebytes.org. Use both of their full scans to check your computer for infection (because defender was somehow disabled).

Then, either we can try to fix defender, or you can stick with Avast! The choice, is yours.

I am running Win 8.1 on a Samsung tablet and use Windows Defender for protection. I own the tablet it is not part of any network.
I was searching the net and Defender reported malware. After a bit of a tussle the malware seemed to be removed but Defender was turned off, so I have no protection. I went into the Control Panel/Security Centre and it reported this and had a button at the end of the message for turning Defender back on. However the button did not work. It was visible but did not seem to be enabled. When I clicked on the defender app icon there was a message saying Defender was turned off at the Group Policy level and was controlled by the Administrator. As it is my own PC I assume I am the Administrator, but this did not seem to make any difference. I searched for Group Policy but nothing was found.
How can I turn Defender back on?

A:Cannot Turn Windows Defender back On

Hello Punchy, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Did you install a 3rd party AV program?

If so, they will often disable Windows Defender by default, and Windows Defender cannot be turned on until the 3rd party program is uninstalled.
