sfc /scannow not working even in elevated cmd

Q: sfc /scannow not working even in elevated cmd

After Even I run cmd as administrator (and my account is administrator), sfc /scannow wouldnt work with follow message "Access Denied." I have no idea what I should do about this. Is this something to do with path? Please help!

Preferred Solution: sfc /scannow not working even in elevated cmd

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Some time ago, at http://www.techsupportforum.com/, I learned to launch an elevated Device Manager by using Cortana to search for "devmgmt.msc," then right-clicking the search result and selecting "Run as administrator," then look for yellow flags next to drivers which need updating. I've done that several times, including earlier today, and I've never seen any yellow flags, but today I installed Windows Update MiniTool and I discovered that there were 6 drivers which needed updating. Anyway, whenever I launch an elevated Device Manager, I never see anything to indicate that it's elevated, and there's never a UAC dialog like there is whenever I run anything else as an administrator. Are these behaviors normal, or does something need to be fixed?

A:Not Sure Whether Elevated Device Manager Is Working Properly

I recently concluded that the information I received about an elevated Device Manager was probably bogus.

Went to the tutorials on this but a black screen flashes for a second and then closes.

I went to start, then typed in sfc /scannow, then right clicked on the sfc /scannow program and ran as administrator.

I recently trıed to get sfc /scannow to work,

Sınce ı don't have a W.XP CD ı read that you then need to locate a directory on your system that's named"i386"

Is that the same i386 that's on C:/İ386 ?

And ıf so how do ı proceed?

In ''my computer' My CD ROM ıs (E:)

and the i386 folder ıs present ın C:/i368

Any ıdeas as to what ı could do ?

You will require a windows CD. It needs to copy clean versions of your system files to your dllcache, as what's in there is corrupted apparently.

I would contact your local technician, and get them to burn you a copy of Windows XP Home SP3. (this is allowable as you hold a license for the software, per the key on your machine)

Usually we only charge about $5 to do it.

Hi, I have this what seems like common issue with SFC /Scannow where it keeps asking me for my Windows disk. Now I read most people have this problem with SP2 install disk and need to use nlite to slipstream the latest SP3 pack into XP install image or iso (not sure) and then burn to disk and use the newly burned disk when prompted by SFC.

My problem is SFC keeps asking me to insert my disk. I have a Win XP SP3 install disk, the same one I used to install XP. I don't know if there is anything I need to slipstream into my XP SP3 install to get SFC working but I need this issue fixed.

A:SFC /Scannow not working with SP3

IF it asks for a disk and you have a disk put the disk in the drive when it asks.

Scannow shows corrupt files. Dism from a mounted iso says they are fixed. I immediately run scannow again. About 50% of the time it says there are corrupt files, again. How to I determine which is giving me accurate information? I would consider a clean install but the posts I see concerning that are not encouraging.

Help please. Heck I'd even pay for support if it would fix the problems.

There was a thread about that. Hopefully that also applies to you.
I have the same issue and I just decide to ignore it. Hopefully the next update will fix the problem since Microsoft is aware of it.

When this happens, the opencl.dll file is not actually corrupt. It is not necessary that you take any action – the report that opencl.dll is corrupt can be safely ignored.

All the sudden today, I get Windows Explorer has stopped working dialog box, which then causes win 7 to go completely black. Tried a couple restore points but they either failed or didn't fix.
I also get this usually now when logging into windows.
Was able to get in and run a scannow.
See file. How do I fix these errors?

I have a Dell with the factory oem win 7 disk.
win 7 64bit.

A:Started getting Windows Explorer stopped working, here is scannow

Just personal opinon but I'd opt for a Repair Install as the quickest way to try to fix these issues.

Repair Install

As the second warning says:

"You cannot use a OEM Windows 7 "Factory" Restore/Recovery type of installation disc that came with or created from a store bought computer to do a repair install with. These can only be used do a clean install instead."

So make sure your factory oem win 7 disk is an actual installation disk and not a Recovery disk. If you need an actual install disk your can download the ISO from here and save it to your desktop. Then burn it to a DVD. You'd use the 25-digit Product Key that's on a sticker on your computer when it comes time to reactivate with Microsoft.

Hello everyone!
After my first failed attempt to post my problem (since I posted on another person's thread... sorry about that ), here I am again.
I have been having a "Configuring Windows Update 32% complete" and shortly afterwards the "Welcome" messages on startup and the "Preparing to configure Windows Update.." followed by "Shutting down" on shutdown for quite some time. Of course, Windows Update isn't working and the "sfc /scannow" command always comes up with the "There is a sytem repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again". As you might have guessed already, restarting doesn't help and I am stuck on this endless circle.
So, as requested on the instructions, I have followed the required steps and here are my comments:
1) SURT installed succesfully and quite fast.
2) Commands "sfc /scannow" and "sfc/ verifyonly" come up with the message mentioned above so I moved on to option three, only to find a .txt file of 0 bytes and empty inside. So I guess this step didn't proceed as planned...
3) I have removed the older CBSPersist cab files and I will post them right afterwards, since the CBS.zip file including them is about 37MB.
Without further ado, please find attached the .zip file.
Thanks in advance for your time.

Hey. I have downloaded a game on steam called "Dragon Nest". When I start the game up, a UAC window pops up and tells me that I need administrator privileges. No problem. This is my laptop so I am the admin. The problem is that I don't want this program to require elevated privileges and I am looking for a way to change that. Thanks.

If it wasn't a Steam game, I'd say try to just set the shortcut to run as admin, which might work anyway.

But since it is Steam, probably best to leave it alone and be glad it's all working for ya as is. One minor thing can break stuff with Steam.

I'm running Vista Home Premium, and there's an account that had Administrator privileges but it doesn't show on the login screen. The two accounts available are a Standard user and the Guest account. I reboot into safe mode but the only two options are the two mentioned. Please help. My computer is running extremely slow and it is almost brand new. I have scanned for viruses using Spybot and Spyware Doctor. Nothing unusual pops up. However, when I look at the CPU usage in the Task manager it will go from 5% upwards of 100% and change by the second. Since the CPU usage is so high I imagine this is why my computer will stall or be very slow opening up programs or executing any functions. A:elevated CPU usage

Hi jmontcri,

Check what programs are running (cntr-alt-del) will
bring up the task manager. Check "applications".

You should also check completely for spyware and

And your virtual memory is probably "thrashing", constantly
re-sizing. You should set it to what would be a "static"

Right click on My Computer. Hit "Properties". In the upper right
you will see "Advanced", then hit "settings", under "virtual
memory". Go to "Advanced". You can choose which drive
to use and you can re-set it manually. Hit "change"

If you have lots of RAM, set it for 400 Meg low, 400 meg
high. Hit set, apply and go out. You will need to reboot.
This should improve speed significantly.

I recently had a problem where my graphics driver decided not to install the update after it removed the working version, now I can't get any version to install. But, that's a different issue (maybe connected though). I just went through and did a full virus scan using pretty much every boot cd I have at hand, as well as malwarebytes (oh, and that's another issue to work on later) and superantispyware. None found any problems except the usual tracking webpages ... nothing major. Ok, so after rebooting after all of that, everything is running in Admin mode! When I am logged into a "standard" account, and choose to run a program as an "administrator" with the "run as" choice. Does it leave me running at an administrator level until I relog in or does it just run that program at that elevated privelage.
Thanks, Scott

A:[SOLVED] elevated privelages

Using the "run as administrator" option only runs the specified program as administrator. It does not change how you are logged in but only effects that one program. But note that by default programs inherit the rights of the parent process. If that one program you run as administrator opens others they will also have administrator rights that continue as long as they are running.

The purpose of the "run as administrator" option is to allow you to run an application with elevated privileges without the need of closing all open applications, logging out, then logging as an administrator.

Not sure if this is the proper forum for my question, but here it goes.

I'm using a SSH server to remotely access my notebook from work. It works well for SFTP and remote command line access using a dedicated, non-admin, user account.

Problem is when I want to run something that requires admin permission under that connection. The server runs cmd.exe under the context of a non-admin user I've created for it, so I'm limited in what I can do. Question is, how can I "elevate" that remote command prompt to execute admin-only programs and commands? UAC of course will not help under that conditions.

before you enter the command you can use the runas command first. You can also save the credentials so you dont have to enter them in every time.

runas /noprofile /user: username "command"

Way too many Windows Explorer crashes and numerous odd behaviour for a relatively fresh clean W7P install. Just popped up after having went from free av to SpyBot's Pro having BitDefender as their flagship av aand used it for 3 days until oddball behaviour spooked me and so I unistalled SpyBot. Now poking around to see wuz up wit dis infernal machine. Tried trouble-shooting via clean boot, nothing pointed to nuttin. Went to use elevated command prompt (from me as admin) and yet the command or 'DOS' window seems to indicate I'm not an Admin, ref. see scr-shot. As I read and recall, the resulting command line (as an Admin) is supposed to read as C:\Windows\system32, no? Any wisdomeers out presently here?  Will hang a bit and den check back every hr or so.  Best regards and happ-e-trail otherwise, wguru

For those who'd like to use the power of a permanent admin (can of course be reverted) prompt here's how:

Elevated Command Prompt Shortcut - Windows 7 Forums

Open Explorer and drill down to:

C:\Users\"Username"*\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\System Tools

There you see the command prompt shortcut as the first of a list of shortcuts. Right click it, choose properties from the list.
The property list will open, now choose Advanced and tick the "Run as Administrator" checkbox. Click Apply, Close. Done.

Now every time you run a command prompt you'll run it with administrative rights.

* Username: the account name you logged on with.

A:Elevated prompt/Run as Administrator once and for all.

I don't have that option.

A:infected with ZeroAccess - need elevated help

Hello and welcome.  Please follow these guidelines while we work on your PC:
Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until I’ve given you the “All clear.”  Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean!
Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.
Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within five days this thread will be closed.
Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.
Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

I think I understand how Linux handles the elevated privileges, but I'm not sure how Microsoft does it. Did they try to reinvent the wheel or just use public domain code from Linux (A rhetorical question).
When I installed W7 Pro on my PC, it had me create a profile. I then customized the profile to have the basic apps that I would need to administer the PC. I want to demote this account's privileges to better secure the PC. What is the best way to enable
elevated privileges with a password and keep the highest level of security.
I have seen methods (copy profile to a different account) on the web and followed them, but they seem to have issues. I don't know how Microsoft intended this to work, but I would like to know what method the Technical community believes is the right way
to handle this.
Thanks in advance.

I have been trying to register a program I bought and they tell me I must be logged in as Admin.

When I try to get to the elevated CMD prompt I am entering: net user administrator /active:yes

I get an ERROR 5 message and nothing happens.

I have also tried to use the other method using the Computer Management | Users method and enabling the account there. I don't see anything happening when I do this unless I have to reboot the machine, which I haven't tried.

The admin account is simply administrator and has not been renamed to something else and there is no password. I have used the CMD prompt method before and it worked fine now for some reason it won't.

Thanks ,

Referred here from the "Am I Infected?" forum,
thanks to BC Advisor .
In this link you will see several initial logs from Security Check, Farbar, etc.
I had Microsoft Security Essentials on my IE7.
I had an "update Java" type prompt that I tried to close.
(Would never open that!)
Suddenly MSE closed, I don't seem to have it available anymore.
A fake Security program tried to run, but I closed it.
I haven't observed any problems, other than the fact that MSE is disabled.
This may/may not be relevant: I had a some major problems several months
ago with viruses - I tried to repair them on my own - I accidently
deleted part of the MasterBootRecord, so I had to re-format my drive
and start over.
Gringo helped me through that.

I have a gadget that has buttons for hibernate and standby to run a shortcut. If I run the short cut directly by clicking it, it works, but if I try to run it from the html button, it will not acknowledge the run as administrator setting. I have tried it with VBScript and cannot change the powercfg - h state.

Here is the html:

HTML Code:
<a id="hibernate" onMouseOver='ShowTip(1,"Hibernate");' onMouseOut='HideTip(1);' href="../core/Hibernate.lnk" >
<img src="../images/Hibernate.png" border="0" width="20" height="20" >
<span id='tooltip1' class='tooltip'></span>
Here is the shortcut:

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /c powercfg -h on & rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0

Here is the VBScript:

Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
WshShell.Run "%COMSPEC% /c POWERCFG /Hibernate ON"
WshShell.Run "rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll SetSuspendState Hibernate"

You are really going about it the hard way. Why reinvent the wheel. If you are just going to use Metro/Start, use Ctrl-Alt-Del, to pull up the Start Button. If using 8.1.1, it is already on the Metro/start screen. If always using the desktop, use Classic Shell or Start8 from Stardock.com

This probably is not new to many, but I find it useful.

There are times I want an elevated command prompt. I usually type in "cmd", right click on it and run as administrator. If you need an elevated command prompt now and then, simply create a shortcut to "cmd". Right click on the shortcut, left click on properties. Click the shortcut tab and select "advanced". Finally, you can select "run as administrator".

Like I said, just something I didn't think about before, but it's handy to have.

A:Tip for Elevated Command Prompt

Elevated Command Prompt

As a sysadmin trying to roll out an image of windows7 to other machines, not having cmd parameters to automate an elevated cmd really annoys the hell out of me.
