How to avoid Win10 File Explorer crash due to WU just issued

Q: How to avoid Win10 File Explorer crash due to WU just issued

I missed this yesterday, it's different from the nVidia problem, this one can affect many.  The article (click here) has advice on how to prevent your network or File Explorer from crashing, until a fix has come out in Win10 updates.
Maybe the fix has already been sent, but I only saw a Windows Defender update this morning.  Mr. Woody Leonhard here says the fix has been issued.  I didn't see it, will have to check.

Preferred Solution: How to avoid Win10 File Explorer crash due to WU just issued

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: How to avoid Win10 File Explorer crash due to WU just issued

This just gets better and better. It's bad enought for people with some experience to deal with these issues but what happens to all the poor souls with little computer experience when a KB update borks their computers?
Edit: An Microsoft is thinking about pushing out these updates using P2P?

Been grappling for some time to customizing the right pane of either Win7 or Win10 (not sure if they respond the same) to allow permanent column and column title arrangements. Ideally I would like to apply such attributes to a specific folder and all it's sub-folders. An example is below:
I would also love to be able to set these columns as fixed widths, but this is not as important as the specific columns themselves.

Every file I right click make explorer to crash. Folders don't crash when I right click them but files yes.
It happenned to me right after installing tune up and used TuneUp program desactivator, Auto start manager. I also used defragmentation which I stopped because it was too long.
Can someone help me ?

A:Right click a file = explorer crash

Any system restore points before this happened ? Revert changes made from utility program, could be due to a shell extension software puts in your context menu when you right click. CCleaner can check extensions if have it, if not CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download
Go to Tools menu, startup at top select Context Menu see what is in the list, select and disable any third party extensions.
Most of time reason for this when you right click and explorer crashes it's due to a shell extension.

Hi. So I just started my computer up this morning and noticed that I couldn't open file explorer at all. I click the button on my taskbar, but when the window pops up, it's blank and then it crashes. My whole screen turns the color of my tile screen (Orange) and then it takes me back to my desktop. I've tried opening file explorer other ways, but nothing works. I created a .dmp file using process explorer, but I need help reading and understanding it. I uploaded it to my SkyDrive. Here is the link: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resi...A7C024BB%21984 I just put it in the minidumps folder. It's called explorer.dmp

I would greatly appreciate it if any of you guys could help me. This is a big problem.

A:File explorer crash and reset

explorer.dmp contains references to windows file errors (no 3rd party files mentioned).
We'll need this stuff (even though you're not mentioning BSOD's): Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions

While waiting, try:
1) DISM - Fixing Component Store Corruption in Windows 8
2) then try SFC.EXE /SCANNOW from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt
3) then try this free tool: ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows Use it to disable all 3rd party (non-Microsoft) shell extensions. Then reboot and see if that fixes things.

I have been having problems with explorer crashing while I right click, open a folder, or a file...and this happens at random...sometimes one after another, sometimes not for a few hours. I have been running the Windows 7 7100 RC (64 bit) for about 3 months and I didn't have a single problem. I did a clean install to Windows 7 Home(64 bit) and I am running all of the same programs if not less, and have had a ton of these explorer.exe crashes. I recently did a repair from my install disc, nothing changed...explorer.exe still crashes alot.

Hi Welcome to SF,

I guess the problem is related to the Context Menu. Download the ShellExView is an excellent tool to view and manage all installed shell extensions. The rule is to disable non-Microsoft context menu handlers *one-by-one* and verify if the problem is solved. If disabling one does not solve the problem, undo the disabled item and disable the next non-Microsoft handler. Do the same until the problem is solved and finally identify the culprit. Scroll right to see the Company Name column in ShellExView.

Hope this helps

Okay Hey guys,

I guess I will first talk about my situations:

1. When I turn on my pc and log on... I get error files missing warning for
two .dll files:

When I ran DSS, these two .dll files were underneath the running
processes section as you will notice in the log I have posted.
Now I am assuming these are viruses or corrupt files any clue as
to getting rid of the error message. Virus is being the most likely cause
because these .dll supposedly belong in a temp document and from my
knowledge its odd for .dll files to belong in a temp document. Saying that
I cannot seem to find this temp folder. maybe im just blind.

2. Now my main problem, rather irratating to be honest. When runing
IE 7, my windows explorer seems to crash.

I understand I had a virtumonde virus something like that.
That spybot search and destroy removed. Vitumonde caused loads of
annoying pop ups based on my surfing habits. Once spybot removed it
windows explorer began crashing assuming virtumonde or some virus
removed by spybot is trying to run but due to files missing it is unable to
run succesfuly causing the explorer window to crash.

Hi Guys,

I have encountered this problem (in thread line) for the past 3-5 days and I have come no closer to any solution during that period of time.

Basically, as soon as I left click or right click on a file in Windows Explorer it will crash. My Windows icon in the bottom left has also stopped working and I cannot ask Cortana anything (not that I did anyway...).

None of the advanced boot options work either (system restore, clean install etc...).

Apologies if that is somewhat vague, and thanks in advance for any assistance.

A:File Explorer crash when selecting files

Hi, I think you need to try to repair Windows.

Let's start by opening an admin command prompt
Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (admin)

chkdsk C: /F
and your PC shold reboot and run the command.
Check it reports everything is ok or fixed.

If so (else post back):

Open an admin command prompt
Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (admin)
SFC /Scannow
and post back the results.
(This will attempt to refresh any corrupt system files).

These are quite routine, safe procedures.

I have recently installed SP2 on XP and installed plenty of new spyware progs and AVG anti-virus.

Since installing the service pack I have been unable to right-click on any file in Windows explorer , the window freezes and just disappears.
I usually get a DrWatson debugger window after this happens, I have read up about this and cant get a fix. My scans come back with nothing.
I have removed any s/w I wasnt using
I ran registry cleanup programs

There is one thing I am unable to remove from add/remove programs OR delete from file system and that is a folder called ebates_moemoney_maker. I tried removing it from cmd window but I didnt have the permissions. In add/remove programs window it does not show any properties like size etc and when I click on remove it does nothing. The spyware programs pick it up but never delete it . I am unsure whether this has anything to do with my problem with Windows explorer but would like to get it sorted

Here is my Hijack this scan - can anyone spot anything , any help MUCH appreciated !

A:Windows explorer crash while opening folders/file

It may be related to some Explorer extension that was installed and crashing on network drives? Try disabling installed programs "shell integration" as much as you can to test.

Also, you probably want to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1, as it might fix something related to this crash, in addition to some other minor bugfixes.

I have a XP Home SP2 computer and whenever you try to delete/rename/create anything using explorer explorer crashes giving the send and dont send dialog. Meaning i cant do anything. I can use the command prompt to do these tasks however, so i dont think its a hard disk issue. I have tried all of the above in safe mode under the administrator and a normal user and i still get the errors. I have also disabled all non-MS services and all unnecessary startup entries and the problem still occurs. The computer runs Zonealarm Security Suite (Firewall, Anti-virus, Anti-spyware etc...) and Adaware se personal, both which turn up no viruses or spyware apart from the occasonal cookie. So i dont think that it is a virus or spyware infection. This behavior occurs over all system files. Does anyone have any suggestions before i have to reinstall XP?

I will post a hijack this! log if required..

I am at wits end, I have thought I fixed the underlying problem with this second time restoring my laptop via onekey restore. The computer again worked fine for the first few days, but this time, the problem started when the wifi adapter started malfunctioning. Every time I click or hover over the network connections button, it is crashing the file explorer (nttdll.dll). I had been slowly installing windows updates by year ( I got up to 2013) and installed the minimum programs needed to use my computer and made regular restore points after every years updates because I was weary. However, looking back now, system restore claims that no restore points have been created. I'm addition, running sfc yielded unrepairable errors again, and I am completely out of ideas and am wondering if it's a hardware issue... Please help!

Fix your problem by using refresh my PC options. Click or tap on Settings > Change PC Settings > Update and Recovery.
Then open the recovery option and then select get started and refresh your PC without affecting your files. This re-installs windows without trashing your data. As an extra precaution, make sure your data is backed up.

My old laptop had this issue: Intel Graphics adapter WDDM1.1 driver update causing system corruption

It was working fine until one day it stopped booting into normal mode; it turned out that a Win7 download of an Intel graphics driver update was causing the issue. I hadn't created a system backup, which, in hindsight, wasn't a good idea but I'm not sure if the laptop would've worked from a system restore, given that it wasn't working from even a clean re-install.

I'm buying a new laptop and would like to know how to avoid issues like this in future. I used to have auto-install of updates but should I change that setting to "check for updates but only install if I choose to"? If so, I'm concerned that I might not install important updates on a timely basis which might cause more problems...

Thanks for any help.

should look by wxWidgets development community.

I work on a wxWidgets application project(say X). It works fine on Win 7 but it crashes on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

My application X calls an executable(say Y) as blocking call as mentioned below

wxString lName = WDir + wxT("my.log");
int ReturnCode = 0 ;
wxString lCmd = IDir + wxT("Y.exe -l ") + lName;
ReturnCode = (int)wxExecute(lCmd, wxEXEC_SYNC); //the argument "wxEXEC_SYNC" (alone or with wxEXEC_BLOCK or wxEXEC_NOEVENTS)

In 400 times Y crashes(and so X crashes ) 5 to 6 times and the call stack points "[email protected]()".
When I calls Y in standalone mode(in a test program, Y called by other executable) with the same argument(mentioned above), it does not crash. It crashes
only when
I call from my wxWidgets application project. In the code(Y) it sometime crashes while creating a file or closing a file.

So, my question is
"When an application(X) calls an executable(Y) and the executable(Y) do some operation where it requires switching, the Win8.1 or Win 10 system API sends

and X starts to dispatch the event loop for closing Y but Y suddenly wake up after completing the operation. Since parent(X) thread already detached it as

Hello all. This is my first post on the site. I read through a few threads with similar topics but the issues were either not quite the same and/or resolved comparatively easily. I am trying to repair a 1.5 year-old HP Pavilion running Windows 7 Home Premium 64. This machine is used as the main office computer in a small doctor's office. In spite of my warnings, anti-virus software was not installed until it was too late. There was a major issue about seven months ago that required another company to repair. The problem is explorer.exe will not run. Double-clicking a shortcut on the desktop, clicking the text name of a program from the Start menu, and even in the cmd results in the same response, a dialog box pops up stating windows explorer has stopped working. windows is checking for a solution to the problem. followed by another box stating windows explorer is restarting. But the requested application never starts. I have run the Ultimate Boot CD 4 Win, replaced the hard drive and cloned all data, run numerous registry scans, malware scans and antivirus scans. Initially removing over 1500 virus/malware hits and over 1400 registry errors. But the main problem persists, explorer.exe won't open programs. I am more of a network guy and not awesome with pc stuff. Please advise if you have any experience with an issue such as this. Thanks in advance!

Launch the command prompt and typeeventvwr.msc and press <ENTER>Expand Windows log>>ApplicationFilter out the Application ERRORS alone and paste the contents of explorer.exe error hereIf explorer.exe crashes due to a specific program ,the program entry should in the log.I have seen many computers where explorer.exe restarts due to third party programs like QUICKTIME.

Is there any way to avoid/ bypass "File Download Dialoge Box" in IE8? Actually I have a website hosted on Windows Server at local intranet having power point slide shows (.ppsx). Clients (having Windows 7 with IE8) accessing those
slide shows come across File Download prompt. There is requirement to avoid/ bypass that open/ save file popup. Please guide me to do the needful.
It is pertinent to mention that I had tried all the possible ways available at internet through google/ bing. Those inclues (but not limited to)
- Customising IE Internet Options -> Security Settings
- Adjusting IE Advanced Settings
- Registry Editing
- Group Policy Settings
None of these settings work at all. So please dont waste your time suggesting above stated solutions. This must be something out-of-box solution through breaking the ground.
Waiting to read from someone very genius please.

The A70 is not on the list of Lenovo Win 10 supported systems.    Your Intel processor is several generations before official Win 10 starts.
There are ways to prevent Win 10 reminders and unwanted automatic downloads, Google for them.

Which of these updates do I need to avoid in order to not get the "upgrade to windows 10!!!!" adware installed again? I currently don't have it installed (I had to go through a lot to get it that way) and want to keep my computer adware free. SEE ATTACHED JPEG

Anyone know?

Hello Zooga,

If you like, you could just use the tutorial below to disable the "Upgrade to Windows 10" update, and not have to worry about which updates to install or uninstall.

Hey there..

I have recently upgraded to windows 8 pro and since then my taskbar frequently crash's.. Under the eventlog it tells me that it is due to an ntdll.ddl file.. I have noticed that the crash usually happens when i have an open folder..

After looking at different forums, the faulting ntdll.dll could be caused by a faulting driver.. My laptop has switchable graphics and i am using a third party driver, could this be the problem? If not, anybody have an idea?

I have attached system info in zip.

A:Explorer.exe / ntdll.dll crash.. Explorer closes and reloads..

Yes third party drivers on switchable graphics have been a big problem, try using the drivers from the manufacturer.

If I log in as the normal user or the Administrator account, I get explorer.exe closing and reopening about once per second. I can get it to close permanently with Task Manager if I'm fast enough with the mouse.

MS has an article on this saying to run Windows Update because it's a known problem with an already released fix. Unfortunately you can't run windows update without explorer.exe running (apparently). They refuse to say what the name of the patch is or I'd download it and run it off my flash drive with task manager's run prompt Browse button. So I either need that download, a command to start the reversion back to Windows 7 from a command line, or a command line way to bring up the windows update UI that works in 10.

By the way, the problem was found to be with file permissions on certain app data related folders and as soon as I tried to alter the permissions on those specific 3 folders with problems, it gave some generic error saying it failed. So apparently I can't fix it manually.

A:Win10 upgrade loop-crashing explorer.exe

Well one of those is out. I run the new Win10 version of wuapp.exe which is "start ms-settings:windowsupdate" and it does nothing. So, anyone know how to revert to Win7 via command line or what the KB# is for the fix?

I installed KB3097877 on the 10th.

I saw posts that it broke TeamViewer.

Indeed, my TeamViewer would not connect to other computers.

I uninstalled KB3097877 on the 10th.

TeamViewer was still broken for me.

I installed KB3097877 on the 11th so that I could keep testing Outlook.

Now I am offered KB3097877 again.
[BTW, TeamViewer started working again on its own.]

The catalog (and Windows Update) shows it was published on 12 Nov.

I'm going to install it :-)

A:KB3097877 re-issued?

TeamViewer still works. Outlook 2010 still works... BUT: KB3097877 (version 1?) did not break Outlook on this laptop - even when viewing HTML format e-mails with images and tables. So, installing this version of KB3097877 over top of the old version of KB3097877 was not much of a test.

KB3097877 (version 1?) did break Outlook 2010 on my desktop - even if I did not open any e-mails. I can not test KB3097877 (version 2?) on my desktop again. It is busy doing stuff.

Note: I am not currently on the system discussed in my question.
I am trying to install WIN 10 on an older Dell laptop(1501) that came with Vista Home(32 bit). Laptop has Athlon 64 with 2GB RAM. I have created the WIN 10 Home iso on USB stick and did the install (unactivated) 32 bit because of the memory size. I can not create a system image through the BACKup and Restore(Win 7) facility to an external USB disk. The laptop with WIN10 seems to work OK -Google, file explorer, etc. I realize I can't do personalization until it is activated, but I'd like to ensure I can get an image backup now.
Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions.

I have a video file which I edited slightly and then burned to a BD. I now want to delete it, but every time I try to delete it, I get one of 2 error messages. If I try to delete the folder it is in (it is the only file in that folder), I get a message that the file is being used by another program, and I should close that program to delete it. The problem is that it is not being used by any other program. I have restarted the computer repeatedly with no open apps that might use the program, but I get this same message.

Then if I try to delete just the file, I get an error message tell me that the "file is open in System and cannot be deleted. Close the file and try delete again."

I cannot find any file by this name in any of the System folders that Windows has created on my hard drive.

This has been going on for nearly two weeks. Any help to tell me what to do to delete this file would be appreciated.

Hi there,

Go into "safe mode" and see if you're able to delete the file in safe mode. May I ask, is this video file located on your desktop? My documents?

I've been trying to figure out without any success how to pin a file so that I can quickly launch it easily.
Specifically I'm trying to figure out how to pin xls/ods files so that my OpenOffice Calc will start up and open the file. I know it has to somehow be possible, since apparently one of my files is already pinned. I just don't know how it got pinned so that I can do it with others. As you can see below, an image that shows the file pinned. What I'm trying to figure out is how to do this with others, including documents for OpenOffice Writer to open up as well.

Ideally I'd like them pinned somewhere on the actual windows menu somewhere itself so that I don't have to right-click on the program to pull up access to the pinned document. I also can't believe there is now "Recent Documents" type of menu as that would likely be useful as well.

My brother got his computer infected with... something on 19 June 2016 that, among other symptoms, redirects Internet Explorer's homepage to:

This URL then redirects to another site that offers the following fake security warning:

Being an idiot, my brother thought that this was a legit warning and installed whatever garbage this is (from Firefox, not IE). It would seem that I've mitigated most of the problems with that specific malware (invisible audio ads, unknown USB backup software, random system-resource-abusing processes, etc.) which are either gone or not running. I cleaned the system with Norton, then Norton Power Eraser, and finally Spybot S&D They removed multiple trojans and trackers, but cannot seem to fix the redirect and other symptoms. At this point, I figured I'd just ask for help rather than blindly running every computer site's "Top 10" antivirus and antimalware tools.
I've noted the following persistent symptoms:
The above described redirect. An additional popup tab/redirect will occur occasionally sending tab to various "$100 Gift Card Sweeps" pages.
Mozilla Firefox's profile is "missing" and wont start. (Somehow, the profile was rescued as "Old Firefox Data" on the desktop. Still not sure what rescued it given the present infection.)
