Setting WinRAR to exclude specified files from being extracted

Q: Setting WinRAR to exclude specified files from being extracted

I would like to ask how to set WinRAR to exclude files with the exact filenames: 'thumbs.db' or '.DS_Store' (without the quotes, ignore case) from being extracted from an archive.

Ex. Files with these filenames should not be extracted:

Quote:
Thumbs.db
thumbs.db
THUMBS.DB
.DS_Store
.ds_store
.DS_STORE

while files with these filenames should be extracted:

Quote:
1Thumbs.db
1thumbs.db
tackthumbs.db
Thumbs.db.txt
Abcd thumbs.db.txt
1.DS_Store
Abcd.ds_store
.DS_Store.txt
Abcd.DS_STORE.txt

In 'Settings->Security->Prohibited file types->File types to exclude from extracting', if I just type in 'thumbs.db .DS_Store' (without the quotes) in the field, will it work the way I described?

Also, does anyone know if WinRAR has a syntax guide for the Prohibited file types list in case I'd like to add more filenames or be flexible with the rules I need?

The reason for this question, is I'd like to not extract unnecessary files from ZIP, RAR or 7z archives in Windows 7 - files like Windows 2000/XP's Thumbs.db file (Thumbnail cache) and Mac OS X' .DS_Store file (Desktop Services Store), while not being too strict and also not extracting files which just contain 'Thumbs.db' or '.DS_Store' in its filename.

Preferred Solution: Setting WinRAR to exclude specified files from being extracted

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Setting WinRAR to exclude specified files from being extracted

Yes, it should work.

Here is a piece from WinRar 4.0 Help file

Quote:
Files to exclude
File masks and file names to exclude from the archiving operation. Wildcards are supported both in path and name parts of masks. If you need to specify several masks, separate them by spaces. If mask contains spaces, enclose it in quotes. For example, you may enter:

c:\temp\info.txt *.bak *.tmp *\temp\

to skip c:\temp\info.txt file, all .bak and .tmp files, all temp folders and all files in temp folders. You may enter file names manually or use "Append" button to browse for file to exclude.

Detailed information about exclusion masks syntax is provided in description of switch -x. This switch uses the same format of exclusion masks as "Files to exclude" field.

I'm trying to help my coworker out, and I'm not sure what exactly I need to do to make this work.

What we're attempting to do is take a file containing a couple hundred files that are in pairs (IE: File 1.mp3, File 1.cdg, File 2.mp3, etc) and create individual zip files containing only the File 1 pair, the next only the File 2 pair, etc. The zip files would just need to take the name from the file name.

If WinRar can do this, can you please explain to me how to get it to do so? And if it can't, do you know of a (preferably free) program that can do this? Any help would be incredible. Thanks in advance.

A:Setting WinRar to put 2 files into each zip?

Not sure what the default setting is when you install Winrar.
So open Winrar and go to Options, Setting and click on the "Integration" button.
Now you can "select items to add to Explorer context menus".

So then you can highlight files and right-click Winrar and have the "select items" show up.

arcI know if you have lots of files in a folder and do the right-click and pick you can pick add to...archives and then options pops up where you can name the zip or rename the zip because it will name it by default what ever the name of the folder the files are in.
So your still be busy naming the zips unless File 1 pair is in it's own folder.
I think all zip programs work this way.

Do not know of other ways or programs but someone else may.

I don't know if other people had this problem but I have a folder that I need to extract but apparently when I extract it to desktop, I click on the folder and noticed some files were missing. I check the unextracted folder and all the files were fine.
I realized when I extract the folder to desktop, the files aren't actually deleting because they seem to be there in the unextracted folder but not there when I extract them.
the next thing I tried is extracting one file that gets deleted from that folder into the desktop and then nothing happens. So the main thing is that the files wont extract to the desktop for a weird reason. I use McAfee anti virus and I tried disabling
everything possible from it and extracted the file. But it didn't work; also i'm running Windows 10.
All I know is that this is probably not from my antivirus and it has to do something with the file not being extracted.

Please help me fix this problem ASAP as the internet has no good answers or no answers at all.

I have a 64-bit Windows 8.1 HP. It came pre-installed 7-Zip. When I extract it changes the file names automatically upon extraction.

On my old Windows 7 desktop I had WinZip and this never happened. So I purchased and installed WinZip on the Windows 8.1 and the same thing happened, it changed the file name automatically.

I have tried all over the net and on this site to find a solution but to no avail. I also compared WinZip settings on the W7 and I can't really tell if they are the same as it is different on W8.1

My real concern is that when I extract the folder, it changes the files names adding additional characters where there would be spaces and then an extension of numbers.
Windows 7 did not do this at all. Please help!!! How can I turn this off?

What was the extension of the compressed file and what types of files did it contain?

But it really isn't about the program doing the compressing but the data that is being compressed. Some types of files, such as many image files, are already compressed and any attempts at further compression will accomplish little if anything. Some file types, such as text files and some others, compress very well.

Hello event3horizon,

The only way that I know of would be to have Show hidden files, folders, and drives selected (dotted), and to check the Hide protected operating system files box. Of course, all hidden protected OS files will hidden as well. Hidden Files and Folders - Show or Hide
If you like, you could use the context menu from either step 2 or 3 in the tutorial below to quickly toggle to show or hide all hidden files when you like. This way you see them all when you want to, and none when you don't.Show - Hide Hidden Files - Add to Context Menu

I would be grateful if someone had an answer to my question or perhaps someone knows an antivirus software that allows for such customization.

Very often I need to copy large files between various folders. Sometimes the same file gets shoveled around several times each day. Sometimes I simply manually back up my files. I know that these files are clean. But my antivirus (I'm using ESET Smart Security) keeps scanning them all the time. With large files the delay is rather noticeable and not necessary.

I know how to exclude certain folders or applications from scanning, but that's not the solution I'm looking for. I want the antivirus to be able to distinguish copy (or move) operations that I initiate manually, as opposed to some program (for instance, installer) doing it automatically. I want the antivirus to control any "automated" activity, but leave me alone when I move files by hand.

I don't see any obvious settings that can do such a thing. Perhaps, there is another software package?

An error messages appears whenever I try to extract a folder to Program Files. It reads 'Cannot create folder C:\Program Files\Mozilia Firefox\abc'. I tried to first create the folder inside Program Files manually and then direct the extraction to it when I was prompted to choose the destination but it still wouldn't work. It says 'Cannot create folder so and so' and under that 'Access is denied'. I am using the computer as an administrator so I was bewildered when the message appeared. I am thinking that somehow the setting is preventing me to take control over Program Files. Vista's not so user friendly in this aspect.

Any thoughts?

Hello. Last year I installed one utility called Wrye Bash used to manage and install mods for the game Oblivion. This particular utility is distributed as a .zip archive, it has no installer. The installation instructions tell to simply extract the archive to the same installation folder where the game was installed. This archive contains folders and subfolders within it. Since July last year, I haven't used or updated Wrye Bash, and 75 new versions were released! Now I'd like to uninstall it first before installing the new version. Uninstalling wouldn't be necessary if the files to be extracted from the new archive overwrote all the files extracted earlier from the old version archive, but this doesn't happen for all the files: some of them are not overwritten. This brings me to this forum.

I'd like to know if there's any way to automatically uninstall (delete) all the files extracted from an archive. There must be a simple way to achieve this I'm not aware of. The hard way would be in Windows explorer to select each and every file in the destination directory which was extracted there from the archive, and then delete them. Is there any easier way to do this? Basically, I wish to know if there's any way to undo the extracting procedure, by automatically removing the files which were extracted to the destination directory.

I was hoping that converting the original .zip archive to a SFX archive with WinRar, I could then use this .exe SFX archive both to install (extract... Read more

If you can't figure out where the language setting is (take a look at screenshots for the settings in English and go from there), I'd just uninstall WinRAR completely (make sure settings are removed too - not sure how WinRAR handles that) and do a fresh install. Good luck.

Hi. So I had a password protected winrar file, it had 10 files and 1 folder in it and I would add to it by draging new stuff in when I needed to. I recently added to it and it was fine, but then I went into it today and 8 files where gone and the folder, leaving only two files. I could open one of the files fine, but the other said wrong password even tho the password was correct, it let me view 1 file but not the other.

The atchal RAR file size has gone down also so I'm thinking my other files have gone for ever, but thought Id see if anyone new why this happened so I can advoid it in future, and ideally get the other files back if its possibable.

Not sure what else I can tell you, the files in there didn't jump from 2 to 10 Id added maybe one or two at a time over a few months, and I think when I first created it it had 4 files and a folder so I have no idea.

When I right click on a file and hover over send to and click on compressed zip file, a zip file is created but the icon isn't like a directory (the default one) but like a WinRar file. When I run it, WinRar opens the file.

I want the icon to look like a normal directory and the default program to open Zip files. I have unchecked 'ZIP' from WinRar's integration menu under options but still the problem isn't solved.

My main motive is to create a password protected directory and so I am creating a ZIP file which looks like a normal folder. If someone can provide an alternative to password protect a directory, I'll be more than happy. I prefer a software which gives me an option on right clicking the directory and password protecting a folder, so that when I try to open it next time it asks me for a password rather than creating a virtual disk and moving all my files there.

Thanks.

A:How do I stop WinRar from opening zip files?

Hello Abhishek,

Downloading and merging the ZIP option in the tutorial below will restore the default associations for ZIP files to have it open ZIP file by the built-in ZIP handler in Windows 7 again.

Hope this helps,

I am in a catch 22 situation. I recently installed a copy of Vista Ultimate on another comp that I have, just to get the feel of it, so that when all the bugs are out I can put it on my main comp.

My problem is that to try out Vista I need things like WinZip WinRar and various other programs all of which I already have on my other comp. I have no trouble transferring them from one comp to the other
one. That’s when my problem starts.

How do you open WinZip or WinRar when you don’t have a working WinZip or WinRar on the comp you are transferring files to?

I have tried WinZip Crystal but all I get when I try to install it is a very quick flash of what looks like a Dos page and nothing else

I know that this problem can be answered by someone but it's got me beat at the moment.. Any help would be appreciated

A:I can't open Winzip or Winrar files..

Hi numinbah, Welcome to TSF!

Vista? is a pretty 'smart' Operating System that has a default file compressor on-board, that will allow you to open such files until you 'replace' it with WinZip? or WinRAR?.

Hope this answers your query.

Kind Regards,
