Windows 10 Font change when switching from laptop monitor to P2715Q monitor

Q: Windows 10 Font change when switching from laptop monitor to P2715Q monitor

I had posted this on the Monitor forum, but they said this is a Windows 10 issue and not a monitor issue. When I disconnect the P2715Q from the laptop and start to use the laptop LCD, everything is OK. When I reconnect the P2715Q to the laptop, I notice font changes. In Windows 10 File Explorer the font in the left panel is larger than the right panel, and the fonts in Quicken are smaller. When I reboot the laptop, everything is back to normal on the P2715Q. Is this normal? Is there a setting in Windows 10 that I need to make so I don't have to reboot when returning to use the P2715Q?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

NEW monitor Dell 27 inch 4K P2715Q
tripplite KVM model B004-DP2UA2-K (2 port displayport 1.2 4k kvm switch)
desktop video card  XFX Radeon R9 - 270x
laptop video built in intel
I was already using the kvm to swap the input from a laptop and a dell desktop to a Dell U2913WM monitor without issue.
The desktop PC is having this issue since I swapped the monitor to the P2715Q  4K monitor; the desktop icons all regroup to the upper left corner of the screen when I change the input on the KVM switch. This has also happened with a dell 4K S2817Q but this has never happened on the U2913WM. Everything else works fine on the P2715Q. The laptop is having no issues all icons remain in the same location on the screen.
The desktop is using a Radeon 9 270x and as stated it works fine with the U2913WM at 2850 x 1080 x 60
the desktop is using the 4k monitor at 3840 x 2160 x 60 and the laptop is setup the same but it is running the built in Intel graphics.
the newest drivers are installed on the desktop and the laptop.
I am seeking solution to the icon issue on the desktop PC, I cannot use the entire video desktop to setup icons every time I swap inputs to the monitor ands then swap back to the PC the icons are in the upper left corner.

I updated drivers on all devices, including setting the XPS to do nothing when lid is closed. External monitor works fine, until XPS lid is closed, then external screen blanks. However, monitor works fine in airplane mode, which does me no good, as I need an active internet connection for certain software functionality. Also, airplane mode disengages my wireless keyboard and mouse, and I need to turn connection back on and pair devices (wasting more of my time). Is there anyway around this issue, other than returning the TB16 for something that works?

My friend's laptop's backlight just apparently broke. So, you can barely see the screen when it boots up. I hooked it up to my monitor so she could retrieve documents and files for the time being, but after the Windows XP Home boot screen, the monitor loses the feed and turns off. On the laptop screen, it continues to boot up like normal. What's going on? Do I have to change a setting to get Windows to output to the monitor?

A:Switching to a monitor from a laptop

Did you try Function-F3, Function-F5, Function-F7, or Function-F9 (one of these should work - I cant be any more specific because i dont know the make or model of the laptop). One of those should switch the video mode to the monitor.

Replace your keyboard. Most laptop keyboards are quite inexpensive and the actual replacement is not very difficult or time-consuming.

Hi guys! I've been coming across an issue lately and wanted to get some insight as to what exactly is going on. I'm guessing it's the video card, and all my drivers for it are up to date, but I want to make sure.

The first time this happened was on 5/31/2014(see attached screenshot). It's happened a total of 4 times in the past two weeks and always at the same instance. I have a single monitor plugged into my video card(HD 6850) and also have my TV plugged in as well for when I want to watch movies and such. Typically I am running my PC in dual monitor mode(duplicate screens) even when the TV is off but when I turn to TV on these past 4 times, the screen flashes black as normal, but instead of both screens appearing again in tandem the TV is blank and my pc monitor now has a GSOD. I've attached another screenshot as well from 6/4/2014.

It does not happen every time but as I noted it's done this 4 times. As instructed I've also attached my zip file with all the info from DM Log Collector. Let me know if I'm missing anything else that you need. My pc specs are in my profile as well.

A:Can i change so my laptop shows the windows startup on my main monitor

I don't think there's any solution because the reason it's able to switch at all is it's loading the driver for the GPU during startup. So when you see it switch, that's when the GPU's driver gets loaded.

During installation of v/drivers, Windows recognize the second monitor. However later, it keeps randomly switching between first and second monitor, with different intervals (from 20 sec to 20 min). I don't have this problem when i use Linux, so it doesn't seem as a problem with a cable. Thank you!

Uninstall all video drivers over Device manager and select delete software before clicking OK, after please restart PC. I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

I am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.

The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.

I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.

Anyway to resolve this?

This is not the first problem Ive had with my vx922, but it's far more perplexing than my first, which I corrected with a new video card. ATI x1600.

That card took a crap, and now I have an ATI x1550.

Put simply, my monitor keeps switching to the Default Monitor in my Device Manager, but only when the monitor has been off for a while. 15 minutes or more. It's difficult to say when this started, since I was on deployment when my wife told me about it.

Pretty much the scenario is that I switch off, or Restart, no problem. But If I leave the computer off for more than 15 minutes, then turn it back on, I have to switch to the DVI cable, wait a second, then switch back to the VGA cable before my screen becomes visible.

After doing this, if I go to the Device Manager, the Monitor will be Default Monitor. If I "scan for hardware changes", my vx922 shows up.

I have the latest drivers for everything, from mobo to monitor.

I think it's usually Fn and F5 to alternate between laptop screen and external monitor , though I could be wrong ( I dont own a laptop) . It'll almost certainly be Fn and one of the F-keys though .

As for what happens when you physically close the laptop the options are usually in Power Management .

I run a dual monitor setup, and I use two user profiles and switch between them throughout the day. I set up both user profiles identically, which is as follows:

In each profile, I run multiple instances of Internet Explorer 9, so I have four or five Internet Explorer windows open with multiple tabs open within each window. I keep two IE9 windows open on my left monitor, and three open on my right monitor. I also have MS Word and MS Excel open on my left monitor, and two notepads open on my right.

When I click on Start and switch user accounts, if I go back into my first user account, my windows will have either moved off screen somewhere, or they will have moved to the first monitor. The behavior is inconsistent in which windows are shifted around, but the windows end up moving none the less, and it ruins my work flow. I spend all my time setting up the windows back to their 'correct' positions.

Switching users to the 2nd user account will cause the same consequences with the windows set up on the 2nd account, thus defeating the purpose of utilizing multiple profiles to make work more efficient.

I recently switched to Windows 7 on a new computer. My "old faithful" has Vista 64 does not exhibit the window shifting issue.

I am running a new 2nd gen sandybridge system, with an asus h67 motherboard and an i7-2600. I have 16 gigs of ddr3, and Win 7 64 Home Premium. I have an ATI Radeon HD 6570 running both monitors, with the latest video drivers installed. I'v... Read more

A:Windows shifting back to primary monitor when switching users.

After doing a ton of research and then replicating the issue on a number of Win 7 systems, I'm giving up on this OS for dual-monitor business use and going back to Vista 64. I really wanted to work with Windows 7, but I've exhausted my efforts.

I tried a number of third party window management utilities and software, but they either are too tempermental and don't work consistently, or work great but mess up something else (like slow Adobe Flash performance with one window management app). It's all too gimmicky. It's really sad that such basic and expceted functionality is nonexistent in a newer version of an OS. Two steps forward, one step back.

Here is a really long thread on another forum which addresses the issue. The first post in the thread was made in January of 2010, and the thread is still going. Kinda depressing that the issue won't be addressed by MS.

I couldn't check whether it's a Display or VGA card problem. IS there any other way to check it. in addition to these is there any other combination keys to Change the display to an external monitor. I'm unable to check whether i get login or not. if I can login then i can use Windows Key + P. Then i can select mode. But I'm Unable to anything here. Please help me to find the problem and i have to take it to repairing shop.

Hello all,
I have a Phillips 32" LCD (model # 32TA2800/98) that I connect my laptops to with a VGA cable. I usually had my Gateway NV53A (AMD Mobility Radeon HD 4200 series Graphics card) connected and I never had a problem. Recently I connected my Samsung to the monitor and again, had no problems. When I reconnect my gateway the PC detects the monitor but the monitor does not detect the PC. If I switch back to the Samsung it works fine. I have reset the TV to factory default the only way I know how (owners manual). I have unplugged the power cable to the TV for 10 min+. I have changed from a 14 pin VGA to a 15 pin. I have updated all drivers.

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

It appears this one has got them all stumped. I really need help with this one and I am at a total loss. I would be forever in someones debt.

Could it be that the TV has a capacitor that holds the settings for an extended period of time? Maybe I should leave it unplugged for 24-48 hours?

Basically almost everything i do is on my external monitor which acts as my main primary screen. Can someone tell me how to change this to 1920x1080? I googled what is my resolution on the external monitor and it does show 1920x1200 which is correct.

I didn't know if I should have put this in the general discussion page or the video card page but here it is.

My laptop has been acting up today. I would open the lid and it would have strange colors. For example blues would be a strange red color. But it would automatically fix itself and go back to normal colors.

I was suspicious but didn't think much of it. Later today I walked past it and the monitor was black nothing on it. So i pushed the power button and shut it down.

Than the fun began It would show me the splash screen Dell when you first boot it up like for some it would say ASUS or such depending on the mobo they had installed. It to had messed up colors only it did not correct this time than the screen went black. I waited a few minutes hoping it would wake up and give me a screen.....witch it never did.

I rebooted several more time trying to get into the bios or anything with a screen witch also failed. The DELL splash screen never failed to come up though.

After close observation I noticed there was something on the screen it was just really dark and barely readable. It said something to the effect of "Windows has failed to start" and gave me the option of booting normal or startup repair.

I eventually shut the lid and got a secondary monitor and tried to use it. Apparently shutting the lid disables the primary monitor and lets you use the monitor you plug in. And now I have a screen again. It worked.

A:Laptop monitor dilema. Is it the monitor or the intigrated video card.

Hi computergeekguy,

Since you are getting 'video' on an 'external display', it appears to be an LCD related issue with the laptop. You may also try to run the LCD BIST (Built in self test) to check the 'LCD display performance' when separated from the 'graphics'. You may find the following steps useful:
- Power off the laptop
- Press and hold down letter <D> on the keyboard
- Power the laptop back on (continue to hold the letter <D>)
- Laptop enters in the 'LCD diagnostic environment' (check the performance)

If your laptop does not enter the diagnostic mode, you may also try to release the 'flea power':
- Power off the laptop
- Unplug the AC Adapter and Battery
- Press and hold down the 'power button' for 10 - 15 seconds
- Plug the 'Adapter cable' back in and launch the 'LCD BIST' again

Do reply if you have any further questions. I would be glad to assist.

Friend's laptop "wouldn't boot up" HP G6-247CL
Turned out video output was channeled to the vga port Fn+F4 on this model switched back and forth.
Cleaned out tons of viruses, everything good now, but laptop boots up with monitor #1 (Generic PnP monitor on NVIDIA GeForce 8200M G) as remote vga jack, and monitor #2 (default monitor on NVIDIA 8200M G) as my laptop screen as disabled.

When I try to make the laptop screen enabled (by extending the screen to it, then selecting "this is my main monitor), and click apply or save, it asks me to confirm, but doesn't take.

Deleting the drivers can sometimes get the laptop display running as primary, until the next book, then it all reverts to the remote vga port as primary.
if I boot with a linux disc - Kaspersky rescue, for example, it uses the laptop screen just tine.
So what, in a perfect world, should be my primary screen (the laptop screen) is identified as monitor 2 in DISPLAY SETTINGS. My VGA jack should be secondary but is always monitor 1

other notes: Fn+F4 no longer does anything ... will not switch between, I guess because my laptop screen is disabled.

Please help!

I am one of the few people to still have one of those bulky monitors of yesteryear. I've got an broken laptop and the screen looks to be in good shape. I don't know how to go about making it work a desktop monitor or it it would even work but I'll tell you all I can ahead of time. It's a 15.4" screen from a Compaq Presario X1000. The frame to it is gone so all I have is a screen connected to the rest of it hanging by some wires. The wires it's hanging by are a flat collection of wires that seem to be laminated together or something. There are 14 wires laminated in total. There is a bare copper wire followed by three wires that are metallic red, followed by 9 metallic blure, followed by another bare copper. The red and blue seem to be painted or something as opposed to the insulation I'm used to as a residential electrician in training. When the lamination ends it is wrapped in gray nylon. This goes into the laptops screen hinge. There is more wire coming out from the gray part, wrapped in black nylon with a white plug type thing at the end. This is plugged into something labeled SPS-Inverter, It's a green board with some stuff on it. On the other end of the inverter there is white plug recepticle with a white wire and a pink wire plugged in it. This is my first real computer DIY aside from swapping out a power supply and adding ram, keep that in mind.

I want to get a 19" LCD but I am worried about if my graphics card would be good enough? the Pc is about 4 years old...its a P4 1.5 GHZ running XP my graphics card is below

ATI Rage128 Pro AGP 4x Video Adapter
I am not playing any demanding games (the odd Quake 3 on occasion) mainly just surfing the net ,watching the occasional movie

Is it a case of plugging in the LCD and then installing drivers? What is the minimu refresh rate?
I see there are some 19" ones for around $400 Australian new...I don't want to pay to much as it is an old pc anyway
And one last question...is there any Y adaptors for monitors so I could plug in a laptop from time to time and use the LCD as its screen , but the Y lead would save unplugging the cable from my desktop all the time?
thanks!

Hello.

I have a Hyundi D90+ LCD Monitor that worked fine, recently however after I left the PC and came back and met it in power down mode, it would turn on then off and I had to move the mouse again for it to turn off again. Now it turns off and on constantly even as soon as I turn it on and the computer is still in POST. So I know it is not the OS (I run Linux). It not the cables because I use the same cables with my Viewsonic and it works fine.

My first guess would be the inverter, but I never had to troubleshoot a LCD monitor before. I read on a web search that it could be a stuck power button but I played with it and it still is displaying the same problem.

Any suggestions?????

A:LCD Monitor Switching off and on

I had an old HP Flat panel vf15 monitor with the same problem. It was the power inverter (I could hear a squealing noise on power cycles). I had to get it replaced.

But before you do that, check your refresh rates, resolutions and video card drivers.

I have just replaced my PC.
As my new baby is a reasonably good system I now use a DVI cable but still using original Monitor.
In an attempt to sell the old beastie I listed it on fleabay and it sold.
To demonstrate it I put it back on the desk and plugged it back into the monitor to allow me to show the buyer. I even used the DVI cable to connect it.
Everything was tickety-boo when the monitor clicked and turned off, thinking it was a restart caused by some updates I waited; The PC kept on chuntering but no picture.
After a restart it now does this after a minute or so, again with the click that a monitor always makes when turning off.
I know the cable is OK as it works fine on new PC, monitor is fine with new PC. OLD PC was fine with no problems for three years until it knew I was selling it.
Wondered if moving it on and off the desk onto the floor has disturbed something. Have removed and refitted the graphics card to check it is seated properly to no avail.
Will next try using the onboard graphics to by-pass video card.
Any idea guys?

Monitor is destined for recycling. Faults range from faulty PCB to transistors. If you know a good local repair shop....get a quote before you replace. Last 3 like this at school all needed replacing.

It might be the video card/chip instead of the monitor. Does the LED on the monitor remain green when it goes black? Best way to tell is to try and borrow another monitor

Hi,
My Monitor- LG Flatron M227WDP keeps switching Off/On for 10 secs after running for about 15 minutes, I have tried another older TFT Monitor which also switches off for longer. I have had the LG monitor checked twice... result Ok...
The Desktop a Dell Studio XPS 7100 has been back to Dell and had the graphics card replaced, no other faults recorded. (both monitor and Desktop are 14 months old...and "out of guarantee"). I have no answers from Dell.
No Errors have been viewed at all.
This has me tearing my hair out, the problem seems to be with the Tower, but ????
I have trawled various Forums out there.
I would appreciate any advice from you good people out there.
Thanking you in advance.

My son likes to switch the monitor input from his computer desktop to his XBox360 using the same DVI input on the monitor. When he is through playing one he pulls the DVI plug on the monitor and switches to the other. Can he harm the video card on the computer by doing this with power on? Can he harm the video card by leaving the computer on when its not hooked up to the monitor? Thanks for any advice.

The laptop our family shares recently had its monitor broken. It displays half of the screen, but will not stop shaking. I have it hooked up to an external monitor, but I am unable to use it to display the laptop screen without changing the display settings via the laptop. Is there some command I can use to set the external monitor to display the laptop screen? Or do I need to replace the laptop screen?

Hi,

Today I plugged an hdmi to vga cable into my Win 8 sony vaio, and I plugged the other VGA side of the cable into an acee 22" monitor. I then chose from the right hand windows 8 panel to "extend to monitor", the laptop screen went black, the monitor screen remained without signal (extended screen did not show on monitor) and now the laptop screen is black.

I am now stuck and both laptop and monitor screen not working.

I tried unplugging cable, pressing fn and all the f1 to f12, shift, windows button but nothing is working.

I pressed off button then switched laptop back on and it showed the sony vaio logo on laptop then the screen went black again.

Please tell me how could I return my laptop screen to work and stop the screen extension which is not working and which I am sure is the case.

Any buttons on keyboard to click at all?

Any solution is highly appreciated.

Thank you
W

A:- Help - Extended monitor and laptop monitor not working

It's stuck in an extended screen it seems, boot into Safe Mode while you have all external monitors unplugged - Your Display is probably set to a resolution too high for both the external monitor and the laptop monitor, so you'll have to try "Boot to VGA mode" and I don't know where that is in the Windows 8 Boot GUI, if it is even in there at all.
Here is is- There are several ways to get to that from the Boot screen:

Advanced "Startup Settings" - Boot to in Windows 8

Hi All,
I have an external Envision flatscreen monitor that I have been using attached to my laptop for around a year. I have the monitor displaying on both laptop and the external Monitor. Just recently I had a pc issue which I have rectified and my external monitor since rectifying that issue now displays fuzzy. What can I troubleshoot to find out my issue. I've reviewed the Graphics and Display Properties. It is currently sitting at 1024 by 768, Color: True Color and Refresh 60HZ. The odd thing is that when I am in Display Properties, Settings tab, the left monitor in top is black (this should be my laptop) and the right monitor in the pic, which should be my external monitor is gr3y. When I have pressed on the black monitor, and press Identify it indicates 1. When I press on the grey monitor and press identify, it says it is not active, although I do have an image on my external monitor (fuzzy image). When I click the arrow on 'Extend my Windows Desktop this monitor' the right monitor then is black and when I press on it and press 'Identify' it says it is 1 as well. Is this correct. I know this has nothing to do with the fuzziness but still thought I might see if this is an issue or not.
When I right click on my desktop and go into Graphics Properties - I just get confused as to what this is all about. When I go into Display Tab the Monitor is checked, I can check on any of the others i.e. Notebook, Intel Dual display clone or Extended Desktop. Re... Read more

Hello,
I just reinstalled windows xp with sp2 on my dell latitude. The problem i am having is that now the whenever i drag windows around, they move really choppy on screen. I checked out the device manager and it said the video controller (vga adapter) driver was not installed so i installed it thinking that would fix my problem but it has not. It installed mobility radeon 7500 adapter i believe. Does anyone have any advice. Also, when i look at the display properties, it says i have multiple monitors attached when i do not.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Ps. Its a dell latitude 2.40 ghz with 1 gig of ram

A:Laptop monitor all choppy - monitor problem?

First, the multiple monitor issue: common with laptops, as they can support the primary LCD and/or an external monitor.

Next, go to dell.com and see if there any drivers for your laptop's lcd. This could solve the problems your having.

I have HP Desktop Tower Pavilion with windows 10, I had two HP S2031 monitors in dual mode, worked fine. One of them died, I got a good deal on a larger HP 27er monitor.  I hooked it up, they were both working fine ... it was using a default monitor
setting ... and then yesterday the computer downloaded some updates, and in doing so, it downloaded the driver for the HP 27er and installed.  The next thing that happens is the older HP S2031 starts to go dark ... like it is going into sleep mode, and
then it is totally black.  On reboot, it starts up with both monitors working, but within seconds of reboot the HP S2031 goes black again. The HP S2031's buttons do nothing, other than the power button, which turns it off and on, but that is it.
I have done all troubleshooting, I did not even have them set up to sleep, all settings are at NEVER.  In coming here, I have done all the fixes I can find for similar  that are posted for similar issues, the Windows Key + W... nothing.
The create new power plan ... nothing.  the device manger>display adapters>disable then enable ... nothing.  and lastly Start>Control Panel>System>Device Manager>display adapter>driver tap>update ... still nothing.  HOW
DO I GET THE HP S2031 MONITOR TO NOT BE IN SLEEP AND HAVE BLACK SCREEN.  I can not figure this out and am not finding any fix.

This might be a dumb question but I am going for it anyway. I have connected a second monitor to my dell inspiron 2650 laptop and I've been trying to make it the primary monitor. It worked a couple months ago at my girlfriends with this same monitor, but now that i have her monitor here I can't get this to work because the "use this device my primary monitor" is grayed out. I'm trying to play counter-strike on the bigger one and I have had no luck at all
