Resetting settings to default???

Q: Resetting settings to default???

Preferred Solution: Resetting settings to default???

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I can't get my IE7 to keep web page settings (ie. my login settings for this forum) so I don't have to keep re-typing in my logins. It works on the new PC that I have at work. I am thinking about resetting the default settings. I checked the add-on list and it is pretty long. If I reset to defaults, it says that it is going to wipe them out. Will it automatically reload as needed or will it just further screw up my IE7.

is there a way to do this? i messed with some settings and now music won't come out of my laptop speakers, just headphones.

I know the speakers work. help please

A:Resetting default audio settings?

You have probably made your headphones default, and turned off the speakers.
In the taskbar, near the clock, right-click on the speaker icon. Choose 'Playback devices'. In the new window, do you see 1 or 2 items? Speakers and below that Speaker/headphones. Right-click on what is showing, and in the list tick the options, 'Show disabled devices' and 'Show disconnected devices'.
Now you should have 'Speakers' line showing, so right-click on it, and choose 'properties'. At the bottom of the box, you see a drop-box that gives 2 options. Make it to be 'Use this device-enable'. Click OK. That should work.

I have a quick question. I understand IE does a lot more than most novice users understand. I am wondering however what affects would be expected to happen to other Microsoft Applications, (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) and not IE, if the settings on Internet Explorer were set back to default levels. I have tried to search for this but couldn't really formulate a good search for what I am looking to find out. Thanks for anything you may be able to provide.

A:What Affects Would Resetting IE Settings to Default Do?

I wouldn't hesitate. Any effects would not be detrimental.

I have a laptop with XP home, with one hard disk and one OS system

I have the following screen at startup:
Except that in my case both options are XP Home Edition.. That is I have to choose between the two XP home editions at start up.

I only have one OS system installed on my laptop, and only one copy of XP home edition.

I want to reset the boot.ini or the boot loader to reflect this.

When I edit the boot loader from:
[boot loader]
[operating systems]

[boot loader]
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home edition" /fastdetect

...my system fails to boot up.

I had to add a new boot using the recovery console to get back into Win XP.

Since editing the boot loader crashes windows, is there any other way to reset the win XP back to its default of one choice that fast detects?

Also, in the process of bootcfg during recovery I noted I had three partitions. I went into my system properties in windows later to have another look. This is what I have.
I have no idea what the other two partitions are, other than my main 34GB partitions. Is this anything to do with the boot loader or does WinXP set up it's own partition for system files? Also worth noting is the forma... Read more

When the computer is cold booted it acts as if the battery is dead. There is a checksum error that says to check CPU setup or I can just continue booting to XP and it will run fine but date and time need to be reset and sometimes XP will say it's installing drivers for new video card even though it's the same card. It also restarts with no problem.

The battery is good and the system is barebones the only thing I've yet to try is removing the mobo from the case. Have also tried other RAM and video cards and flashed the bios.
I have also run diagnostic tests that indicate there is nothing wrong with CPU, mobo or RAM.

About a week ago, I got the BSOD in XP. It dumped and rebooted. Then the Aureal 8830 sound card stopped working. I downloaded newer drivers, installed them, and it worked. The next day, the sound was gone again. It's been a week and it has to be re-updated daily. Then, the Windows XP display theme reverted to look like W98. When I treid to change it, the background went black along with all text. All that shows are the icons. I can't see a thing. I can't change it back. Is there a files iI can reset or rewrite to restore ithe display to the original look?

And should I think about a new sound card?

And if that's not enough, when I try to log in after someone else logs out, it goes right back to the login screen.

I have 256 mb. I use Norton AV running all the time. I have no idea why it crashed. Even now, with a new profile set up, I have a blue section on the left with Folder Tasks, Other Places, and Detail permanantly there and the icons 1/3 of the way from the left. None can be moved or rearrainged.

Where do I go from here?

Um okay, the desktop on my laptop running Windows XP has gone all screwy, and the toolbar, icons, and everything are being displayed sideways. I'm not sure if this is the same for all graphics cards, but see if you have this option.

Right click on the Desktop > Graphics Options > Rotation > Normal

If you don't have that option, I am pretty sure the program TaskbarPlus can fix your problem

I've got an annoying problem with my Wi-Fi settings in Windows 7.
Recently I got myself a wireless D-Link router and a Realtek USB Wireless adapter for my PC. I had a bit of a problem setting it up due to annoying WEP/WPA keys and then I found the ASCII key option and got it working. However Windows 7 seems to forget the settings for my wireless connection every time I restart the computer(wrong security setting and old WPA key that doesn't work anymore because I changed it). So I guess it keeps going back to the settings I had previously. How do I get it to remember my working settings? I've already ticked that checkbox "Connect automatically" in the connection settings but that did nothing. Is there some sort of way of tricking it into remembering my new settings? It's just a hassle having to set it every time I start Windows.

A:Wi-Fi settings keep resetting

I don't have a computer with wi-fi with me right now but the procedure is very similar in Windows Vista. Go to the Network and Sharing and on the left-hand side, click on "Manage Wireless Networks". After that, remove any networks in the preferred list by clicking on each one and removing them. After that, you should be able to click on "Add" and then click on "Add a network that is in range of this computer and follow the steps in the wizard to connect.

If however when you go to "Manage Wireless Networks", you don't see a preferred list of any kind, then please provide a screenshot of it because as I said, I don't have access to a computer with wi-fi right now.

So I woke up this morning to some issues with my laptop. I'm no wizard but I do know my way around a pc fairly well. I can't seem to fix any of my issues with the help I'm finding online. Rather than pay Dell the $99 for them to fix the issue for me, I've resigned to resetting my laptop to the state it was in before I got it.

I'm ok with losing whatever data I may lose, I'm moving important stuff to an external. My question is, is it a fairly easy process? I read in another topic that you just press f8 when booting up and follow some fairly easy steps. What I'm most worried about is certain hardware not working properly after the reset. Gfx card, wifi, etc.

My wireless not working is one of the problems I'm having. I'm also unable to install/uninstall a lot of programs, one being Java, which I need to re-install because it's another thing not working. But I get the error message "the windows installer could not be accessed this can occur if the windows installer is not correctly installed contact your support personnel for assistance".

Thanks for reading. If anyone needs any detailed information that might help, let me know, I'll gladly comply. Probably wait til the end of the day and if I can't get all this sorted out, I'll just go with the reset and hope everything works after.

My previous audio player (foobar2000) was working fine. All my mp3's had the foobar2000 icon as their icon to signify that they would open in foobar2000 by default. I had to install Real Player to play some .ram videos. When installing, the installer program locked up and I accidentally hit "Next" twice... WELL LOVELY. The 2nd next made Real Player the default player for all my mp3's as well as other sound files. It replaced the foobar2000 icon on all mp3s with the Real Player icon.

I uninstalled Real Player, tried opening an mp3 (clicking properties, and told it to use foobar2000 as the default program to open it), but the icon is still Real Player. I tried reinstalling foobar2000 and telling it to be the default player for my audio, but now some mp3s are the Real Player icon, and some are totally blank (no icon is assigned to it). They all open in foobar2000 though, like they should. How can I reset the icon displayed with these files? I am guessing I have to do something in the registry but I'm not sure.

A:Solved: Resetting Default Player Icon

Is the "foobar" icon showing for any file types?

You can change an icon for a particular file type by finding the file in Folder Options > File types: file type > Advanced > Change Icon

But you have to know where to look for the icon you want. If you have any files associated with foobar -- you can trace its icon the same way.

OK, so I have a question guys. Over the last few weeks I've became a Pro with lots of things, I know more about RAM, CPU's and overclocking then I ever have. and I know more about Overclocking on Nvidia boards then the average person by a long shot. lol. I'm finally stable. but I keep having all my settings get reset.

Here's my problem. I have my PC set so that It does NOT require a password when it Wakes, only on boot. but every few days it resets and starts asking for a password. also i have the power settings so that the display turns off after 30 minutes, and the PC goes to sleep after 45 mins. But that auto;s back to 20 minute display and sets to NEVER sleep.

I have a theory, it's probably a pretty good one, and very possible. but I'm not sure. I know these somewhat advanced machine's us people call computers have a thing where they remember stuff (LOL)
So should it be remembering it. Or is it VERY much possible that all my different settings, and trial and error of overclocking, and the often times I overdue it and my system Crashes. Is this whats causing all these settings to get messed up. I overclock it, or it crashes during a Prime95 test or something. that could be it, not sure tho.

I did try for 3.8 GHz a few days ago and it froze, I had to hit cmos reset. that probably killed all my settings, but I've only done that once. So whats with all the other times. So is it possible that all these crashes have been changing my settings, or should they not be getting ... Read more

A:Resetting PC to factory settings

They might have come with built-in factory recoveries. When you boot up - do you see anything about a recovery process or anything similar? Most times they will give you an option at start up. Also, look in My Computer and look for a partition about recovery.

PC's may have came with recovery disks too.

If you are unable to find anything like that - you can wipe out the PC using DBAN (link available in my signature). Keep in mind, this will wipe out everything on the hard drive. So you will have to reinstall Windows.

Hey everyone,

I am having some trouble with my computer at home. It's my mothers 200(3?) Dell dimension desktop: old pentium 4, 256 MB of RAm, integrated intel chipset video card. My aunt messed with the display settings and got it stuck on 640 x 480 and so I followed the troubleshooting directions to fix the resolution. I set it to 1024 x 768, 8 bits of color, and was prompted to reset.

Here's where the trouble begins: after the bios startup and the windows xp loading screen I am getting no display. I can hear the start up tone and can see the processor working, but have no display. In order to troubleshoot I have tried resetting, loading in safe mode (didn't load), toggling video from automatic to onboard, as well as flushing the CMOS by removing and resetting the battery. Any suggestions that would not involve reinstalling windows? All I think I need to do is reset the display settings without entering windows.

@Char-Lee Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! If Vista is what came preinstalled on this laptop, then the general way is to press  F11 while rebooting and when the HP Recovery Manager starts up, select the option to do a factory reset. IF that doesn't work, that means your Recovery partition has been corrupted and you would have to use HP Recovery Media disks to do that -- but HP does not stock Vista recovery media anymore.Since  HP no longer provides Recovery Media for your model, a couple of other sites you should check are: http://www.computersurgeons.com/ and http://www.restoredisks.com/Before using the media, read through this: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00006110Good Luck

I have a Toshiba laptop with Windows 8. Whenever I shut it down and restart, the desktop settings get reset. For example, there's a Touch Keyboard option on my taskbar and I choose to remove it. I right-click the taskbar>properties>toolbars>uncheck touch keyboard
After a restart, it comes back. How do I keep that from happening?

A:Desktop settings keep resetting.

This seems like quite unusual behaviour, it is most likely caused by some setting by one of the manufacturer's programs.
You might want to look firstly in the programs installed already by toshiba for the preference that is casuing this, otherwise, a quick fix that may help in your situation would be to just prevent the adding/removal of toolbars.
Beforehand, adjust the toolbar's to the way you want them, with the one you dont want removed. After that, proceed with the steps below.
Search > Right Click gpedit.msc > Open it
In the Local Group Policy Editor. Go to the following directory: User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Desktop
Once there find the option called  "Prevent adding, dragging, dropping and close the Taskbar's toolbars".
Right click this option and click edit
Click the enable checkbox and click ok
That toolbar should no longer appear after restart. If you need to add or remove a different toolbar in the future, just disable, make the changes and re-enable.
Hope this helped.

Yeah, you may think this seems like just a normal message from oc'ing too much, but a problem-I haven't overclocked anything! P.S. would the power drawing thing (molex on my case fan) need to have a seperate connector or just draw power from another device? Thanks.

If this happens just once then I wouldn't worry about it too much but the PSU or HDD could have something to do with it.

You can connect a molex connector fan to its own power connector or you can put it on an optical drive's connector for example, but it's ok to do either as they don't use much power.

This may be a longer post because I was unable to find anything about this problem anywhere else on the internet. Also, I am on mobile so I apologize for any typos and formating errors. Background I bought a HP Desktop a few years ago in 2012. I later upgraded and added a GTX 660 along with a new 600W PSU. Then later upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 10 for free. Upon Installing my new GPU I would not get any signal to monitor simular to my current problem, but thankfully I found the solution to that by disabling secure boot in the bios. The Start of The Issue I had crashing problems with one game I was playing and figured maybe something was overclocked in BIOS settings to cause these crashes. So I'd figuring maybe resetting BIOS would return it to an un overclocked state. However, after confirming the reset to defualt setting I got a series of short beeps. I did not count these beeps, but I would guess around 7 or 8 of them. After that I would get no signal to my monitor. Hardware I would like to mention when I start up the PC everything things sounds and looks normal. No error beeps. All lights and fans turn on as normal, and I am able to hear the hardrive working as normal. To prepare for a dual boot installation (Vista / Ubuntu) I had to allocate space on my C-drive using Vista's 'Disk Management' and 'Shrink Volume' features. Unfortunately, in the process of making the allocation, I mistakenly allocated 40 MB instead of 40 GB. Went back into 'Shrink Volume' to correct the allocation but it apparently cannot increase space. Also tried 'Extend Volume', no luck there either (or maybe I just don't understand how it works). For what it's worth, here's my current C-drive allocations.

144.81 GB NTFS
40.00 MB Unallocated (reserved for Ubuntu) (this is what should have been 40GB)
75.29 GB Primary Partition
3.24 GB Primary Partition
9.49 GB NTFS

I should also mention that I already have Ubuntu installed, so this is actually a re-installation to solve a connection problem I'm having with Ubuntu.

Not sure what to do.

A:Resetting C-drive allocations to default setting in Vista

Hello bbbluz,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

A snippet of the Disk Manager would be helpful here. Info here if needed: How to Use the Snipping Tool in Vista

If I have this right, you should be able to shrink C once again, by the amount you want (40GB) This will create more unallocated space next to the 40 MB you have now. They should combine into one large unallocated space ready to be turned into a volume.

Hope this helps.
