Msconfig/Startup runs and then disappears

Q: Msconfig/Startup runs and then disappears

Problem: The Wild Tangent Error Pop-up was solved on my desktop computer by using:

START ---- RUN---type in msconfig-----then going to START-UP and unchecking the Wild Tangent File...... But.....

Our Laptop has the same problem, which is an XP also.....we tried the above solution. The lap top has SPY Bot, and Ad Ware removal like my desktop computer, but now we have a new problem before we solve the Wild Tangent problem.

And that is.......When we go to click the Start-up Tab in the System Configuration Ultilty which brings us to all the files on Start-up, we do see all the files but, the page disappears after about 5 seconds, it acts like it is timing out.

This quick disappearing act does not give us a chance to find the file and unclick the Wild Tangent file to solve our problem.

How do we fix the Start-up so it will last more than 5 seconds?

Thanks for all your help!

Preferred Solution: Msconfig/Startup runs and then disappears

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was aghast for reinstallations of Windows 8 because of reasons unknown which ran operating system into trouble.
Now I know why this happened, because I selected maximum number of processors shown in 'Msconfig', which really doesn't exists ('Msconfig' showed 4 processors for Intel Core i3210).
From next start Windows 8 ran into trouble and within a day or two of using this desktop stopped responding, happened for all operating systems where I selected maximum number of processors shown in 'Msconfig'.
Therefore do not select maximum number of processors from 'Msconfig'.

We have AIM. Each time we log on, we lose the ability to go to regedit, msconfig, task manager (we can get to those spots, but they appear and then immediately disappear). I have cleaned EVERYTHING with HiJackThis, have gone through every spyware removal possible, used the AIMFIX link via JayLoden.com., and have run Error Nuker. Everytime I run the stuff, it cleans everthing completely and the system is fine. Yet, next time we log onto AIM, the problem returns.
Here, I think, is the offending line
hkcu\..\Run:(AIM)C:\Program Files\AIM\aim.exe -cnetwait.odl (this is what shows up in HiJackThis and is what I delete to get the system operating properly)

Once the AIM has been up for a view minutes, this is the away message that automatically appears (and is what contains the virus):

How do I get rid of this for good? Any suggestions?

We would like to see your HJT log file, along with the info from this instruction.

Let's use a program to scan for any trojans that may exist. Download TDS-3. Learn how to use it here. Make sure to update it after you installed it. You can get the manual updates here. When you launch the program, it will scan your memory for running processes. This will take less than 30 seconds. Next go to System Testing on the menu and choose Full System Scan. After that's finished, post the log file by selecting everything on the top pane (select from bottom to top). If any alarms are found, it will be listed in the bottom window. Please copy and paste that here also if it applies.

I'm trying to scan my system to find out why I keep getting the infamous "has stopped working" message. I'll post that separately. But my problem with the scan is that the window comes up and the scan runs all the way to 100% and then the window closes. Actually I can only see it to 99% because of that automatic closing.

From all I've read, I'm supposed to get information from that window even if it doesn't find any problems.

So not *it* seems to be a problem.

Suggestions, as always, most welcome and received with thanks.

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro c850 with Window 7 Home Premium which has become very slow and freezes, but it works perfectly in Safe Mode so I looked up how to identify the problem and found this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135 I did what it says under Windows 7 and now when it boots up I get a 'location not available' message that msconfig isnt available, also if I search for msconfig nothing happens. (Pic 1,2,3) How do I get to normal mode now? I only clicked the boxes as shown in the tutorial.
I can access the boot menu and system setup if that helps at all? F2/F12. On system recovery Options I opened system 32 but I have no idea what I am doing so I haven't clicked anything. (Pic 4)
I dont have a restore point set or a restore image, nor can I find the full factory restore option in F8/F12. (Pic 5)
I tried doing a cmd 'sfc/scannow' but get the message that it doesnt recognise 'sfc'.
I did save folders etc onto a remote harddrive and I did make a system backup dvd disc just before doing the above but I don't have the original Windows installation cd. I'd prefer to just start all over from Factory Reset at this point (without erasing windows) if anyone has any ideas?
Someone please guide me to what I can do next.

A:I did an msconfig to selected startup and now msconfig isn't available

1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile folder and verify if it has the Desktop folder there.
2. If the Desktop folder does not exist, then create an new folder and rename it to Desktop or copy it from C:\Users\Default\Desktop location.
3. Open "C:\Users\[your user account]" folder. If you see two Desktop folders with one blank and the other with your Desktop items you need to delete the blank one.Note: C:\Users\Default is hidden by default.
Press Windows key and X together to open Windows Explorer.
Click Organize and select Folder and Search Options from the menu.
Click the View tab, and then click Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
Uncheck the box which states Hide protected operating system files.
Click Yes to confirm, and then click Ok button.

Sometimes I am not sure whether or not I want a program to run at startup and I want to be able to change what I have done at any time.

So there are a number of unchecked entries in msconfig and I have to use Selective Startup all the time.

If I want to revert to Normal Startup under the General tab instead of Selective Startup, the program's box automatically rechecks itself in Startup.

The Startup tab gives me a handy record of what I did and allows for an easy change of mind so long as I continue to use Selective Startup.

As far as I know, If I edit the Registry to stop programs running at startup, they won't show in msconfig and I lose the handy record of how it was and I may have to reinstall the program to go back to it running at startup.

I would like to accomplish this:

1. Use Normal Startup instead of Selective Startup.

2. Have some programs not run at startup, but be able to easily change back to having them run at startup.

3. Have a readily accessible list of those programs and the details as shown under the Startup tab as a reminder of how it was without having to manually enter it all into a text file or keep a notebook or reinstall.

Is there some way to use Normal Startup, stop programs running at startup, but retain or find a list of those programs (including the details under the headings Startup Item, Command, Location) that is shown when using Selective Startup with unchecked boxes under the Startup tab?

To put it another way, use Normal... Read more

My problem is that my shutdown and booting speed can get slow and my laptop often fails to connect to the wifi network.

I heard that one of the way to speed up the shutdown and booting process is to reduce a number of startup programs. So I did msconfig and de-selected some programs under startup list.

My question is, can I leave my laptop on Selective Startup mode? It seems like there are people who say it's okay to have selective startup mode while others think it's better to leave computer at normal startup setting unless troubleshooting. I read some people having troubles after changing normal startup mode to selective.

Should I leave it on Normal mode? Or would there be no problems even if I use my computer on Selective startup mode? I am a computer illiterate so I'm confused.

A:Msconfig Normal Startup or Selective Startup

Oh boy. Another slow boot issue.

Are you guys just having a go at the new guy?

I'd be happy to help you with your slow boot issues.

Can you provide a little more detail? Is your computer booting slowly lately?
Is your system slow otherwise?

To answer your question, unless you're troubleshooting I can think of little benefit for a non-advanced user to use the [Selective startup] option. I don't say that to be disrespectful. Just, if it's a little out of your comfort zone, you're unlikely to get much benefit from tweaking that and the consequences for doing it improperly could be catastrophic.

I changed BitComet settings not to start up at starting up Windows.
It is unchecked to start in Msconfig.
It is not in the Startup folder in Start Menu.
Why it is still starting up when starting Windows?

A:Bitcomet is not in msconfig startup and startup but still starts up!

Looks like there is an entry in the registry that has been left after you re-set the settings in the program

Autoruns for Windows

Download and run autoruns and check the items on the startup tab for an entry pointing to bitcomet, you can then uncheck the item to check and then right click and delete the item when you are happy you have all items

Autoruns is a very powerful program and you should only use it to adjust startup of items you are familiar with and are not system critical

Hi all, I have the problem listed in the title. I open netzero. Have it to dial and it shows it's little video ad. After that ad, the hard disk light lights up for several seconds while internet explorer opens (it will freeze for a minute or so too) and netzero then will shut off without an error. So then, I have to wait on Ie to quit doing whatever it's doing and restart netzero again. It works almost always on the second try. Any ideas on how to fix this? I e-mailed tech support but all they did was copy and paste the reinstallation instructions from the website. Reinstalling didn't fix it anyway, just delayed it until the video ads were downloaded.

This problem does not show up on a wireless or regular network like at school but when I use netzero at home it always does it.

I just deleted a program from the startup list through Msconfig (WinXP) and i got a message to start in future in "Normal Mode". I was starting in "Selective Mode". There was also an option to 'Don,t show me this message again' which i clicked without going to selective mode (all this after restarting). My memory tells me that when i did this some time ago it caused some trouble. Does the startup option derive from the fact that there are a dozen more items on the startup list which i leave unchecked, and therefore 'selective mode' wld be the correct option? tks.

if you untick a program in msconfig - you will get that error message - just click the box.

if you want to know what the startup programs do - have a look here

Can I uncheck NVIDIA NVRAID in the msconfig startup if I do not have a RAID configuration?  My Windows 7 takes forever to boot and I'm wondering if this has something to do with it.  All other programs except AV and Logitech Gaming Framework (Logitech gaming keyboard ), and System Mechanic (don't go on with me about this one - some people I know don't like it, but this problem existed before it was ever installed so you can't blame that program.  Besides it runs on several computers in the house and doesn't affect any of them.)

A:Startup in Msconfig

This is a valid program that is required to run at startup. This program is required to run on startup in order to benefit from its functionality or so that the program will work.NVRaidServiceMSConfig (System Configuration Utility) is a troubleshooting utility used to diagnose and fix system configuration issues. In the Summary section Microsoft says "The System Configuration utility helps you find problems with your Windows configuration. It does not manage the programs that run when Windows starts."Although it works as a basic startup manager, msconfig should not be used routinely to disable auto-start programs. It is a temporary solution and not a good practice for the following reasons:When uninstalling programs while disabled with msconfig, they may not be uninstalled properly and manually editing the registry will be required to remove everything.Msconfig will often leave orphaned entries when software is uninstalled. When used to switch back to normal startup mode, these orphan entries can result in boot up errors.Msconfig only allows you to disable entries. To completely remove an entry from its' list you have to edit the registry, or use a third-party tool like Msconfig Cleanup Utility or a startup manager.Msconfig allows malware related items to hide in your registry which you may not see or affect your computer until switched back to normal startup mode. This could then result in reinfection of the computer.Msconfig does not list all applications loaded in all possi... Read more

Hello. Please bear with me, i am new here. My problem is with the startup menu of the configuration utility (win 98 2nd). I recently removed a bunch of spyware and adware using Adaware, Spybot, and Spy Sweeper. I would like to get to a point where I can use "normal" instead of "selective" startup, but there still seems to be a lot of clutter in the startup section ( most of which seems to be the residual from the bad stuff I got rid of. I also have a window pop up in normal mode saying "Program Not Found" at the top. the program it's looking for is PROGRAM, and for file type it just says " ( yep, just the quote).
I have a feeling I still have some junk on here causing problems, or I did something wrong, because when I start in normal mode, my computer freezes on start up.

Just recently i scanned my computer with Spybot Search and Destroy, and found a trojan "DC3_FEXEC", i removed and rebooted my computer, i opened the task manager and found a process named 'Test.exe' and he disappeared very quickly. I ran ADware cleaner, Combofix (probably a mistake), Malwarebytes, HitmanPro, and it didn't found anything. But everytime i reboot and open the task manager it's there, but it disappears so fast that i can't click on it.
This viruses are in my new Hard Drive that a friend gave me, i formatted both partitions except the one that said ''System Reserved''.
If anyone could help i would be very grateful. Sorry if it's confusing, english is not my native language.
Thanks in advance!
Hey, i solved (i hope), apparently it was something from spybot, i ran in safe mode and used the ''autoruns'' application and the description it said ''test.exe - Makes sure Spybot 2 is there on Windows 10.''
I deleted it and now it's gone. I tried removing the topic but i don't think i can. Sorry if i wasted anyone's time.

Hi there,Just to drop by a piece of advice - Spybot Search & Destroy is no longer recommended as its performance is very poor, and the TeaTimer function interferes with malware removal. Two better alternatives for anti-malware software are Emsisoft Anti-Malware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Both have excellent track records and offer real time protection if upgraded to paid version, and can be used alongside existing antivirus software.

I upgraded to Windows 10 several months ago and the Quick Access menu was working normally. A few months back however, all of the pinned items disappeared and I cannot pin anything to the quick access menu either. I've gone through all the posts and different solutions I can find and all I have been able to do is temporarily fix the problem by deleting the "5f7b5f1e01b83767.automaticDestinations-ms" file in the C:\Users\Rob\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations folder.

Deleting this file does bring back the quick access folders that I had pinned before this problem started to happen, but every time I restart my computer, the quick access menu is again empty and nothing can be pinned to it.

I have googled and tried all of the different solutions that I can find so any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

A:A windows pops up at startup on the taskbar then disappears

Greetings, and welcome to TSF.

Your log apprears clean, so we'll need to look a little deeper.

Let's use a program to scan for any trojans that may exist. Download TDS-3 http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=download. Learn how to use it at http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=easytouse. Make sure to update it after you installed it. You can get the manual updates at http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=update. When you launch the program, it will scan your memory for running processes. This will take less than 30 seconds. Next go to 'System Testing' on the menu and choose 'Full System Scan'. After that's finished, post the log file by selecting everything on the top pane (select from bottom to top). If any alarms are found, it will be listed in the bottom window. Please copy and paste that here also if it applies. If you have problems copying the text, look (or search) for a file named scandump.txt and see if that has the alarms - post that here.

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/ente...all_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. You may use Panda ActiveScan also at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

I really want to know how to remove the ones I do not want there. Actually, some are things that have long since been removed or deleted, not being used at all. I would like info on managing this, taking control over what is added, what is not. And to remove those I do not want there.."keen value" included on the start up list.

I also would like to know the same, but in regards to the Task Bar, right clicking on it brings up properties. When I click on "hide inactive icons" a list is on the next page. I do not understand how to use this and want to clean up the list to leave what is current, remove what is not. And want to know how these items get added to this list, when I am not adding any myself.
Thanks for all help and advice. It is very appreciated....parrotplay

I've read on this site (and others) not to use msconfig to control which programs start on boot. I've also seen a list on this site of alternative programs, but can't seem to to find the link.

If someone has it and could post it, it would be much appreciated.

Daughters computer. Win98se, K6-2/500mhz, 128mb ram, WD 17gb HD,
In Msconfig startup there are two programs, that when I uncheck them, they come back when I reboot.
country/selection pctptt.exe
ptsnoop ptsnoop.ext

Ran updated Norton AV.

What are these, and how can I get rid of them? Or do I need too?

Thanks for any help.

In msconfig.exe > Startup, all my items are gone, except MsnMsngr, Office Startup and Adobe Gamma. Anyone know the possible causes of this? I did disable some items beforehand, but I don't see why they'd disappear. My firewall and virus scan startups are gone too. Any idea how to add them back?

I understand stopping programs in startup isn't suppose to used to control what programs bootups/shutdown in a computer. My question is, if I go through Adminstrative Tools and click on Servieces (Local) how to I go about stopping some of these programs from automacally running? I have about 41 programs starting up evertime I boot, which counts for some of the lag time when I boot-up. Thanks as always.

A:MSCONFIG - Startup and other questions.

hey, in the services dialogue you simply right-click the service you want to stop from starting and where it says "startup type:" change the dropdown to either:
- manual: if you believe the service may be needed (programs will be able to start it etc).
- disabled: if you believe it is useless/malware based (e.g. i have the bonjour service disabled because it annoys me)

Warning: some services are essential, be sure you can disable it before doing so.

I know that when you have windows 98 and you type msconfig in the run then you click on the tab saying startup you can remove unnecessary things from loading that will only slow down your computer.

But on windows 2000 pro when I type msconfig it says it is not there - what do I use to remove unnecessary things from starting up that are not kneeded to run the computer ?

And what should stay there and load at startup so the computer has no problems ?

Hello All,

While the Startup tab in MSConfig makes total sense to me, the options under Services do not. By selecting or unselecting an application under Services what exactly am I doing?

A:Msconfig Startup V Services

You will kill that application. Msconfig is a tool used for testing. If you want something to stop items in the long term, you'd be better off using Microsoft's Autoruns or Codestuff Starter Which is a little more user-friendly
