Dell 490 BIOS & Win 7 Pro not seeing 2nd Xeon. SiSoft shows it.

Q: Dell 490 BIOS & Win 7 Pro not seeing 2nd Xeon. SiSoft shows it.

I have the exact same problem others have posted here with no solutions listed...

Issue:
Upgraded to Win7 Pro x64 from Home Premium x64 (Anytime Upgrade online), specifically to add second physical processor...

Used MSCONFIG and EasyBCD 2.2 to "force" Windows to look for more cores... nada!

Mobo BIOS will not "see" second processor, at all. Only recognizes one in either socket.

Dell docs and forums insist it is dual-socket supported in "Pro" and "Ultimate" versions of Windows.

Replaced mobo and running latest Dell BIOS (A08) to no avail...

Two tubes of thermal paste and two mobo's later and I'm outta patience.

Suggestions??

Preferred Solution: Dell 490 BIOS & Win 7 Pro not seeing 2nd Xeon. SiSoft shows it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

See the other post. If the bios does not see the 2nd CPU then neither will Windows. Do you have RAM installed for the 2nd CPU???

I checked T3600 and 3610 - the only difference is BIOS firmware, even BIOS chips are the same. T3600 has Intel ME firmware 7th version - that is why Xeon v2 are not recognized by the 3600 system, they need later 8th version of ME. Upgrade of ME formware is a difficult procedure  - You need to fit the size and other attributes of old ME region. The simpliest way would be to read both BIOS chips from 3610 motherboard and clean data region in ME but I don't have any T3610 systems. Another way is to analyze BIOS file for T3610 and drag out the firmware for T3600. If anybody has T3610 - please reply

My Inspiron 17R just had a Windows 10 update.  Immediately afterward (by coincidence or ??), the battery would not function.  If I do not have the adapter connected, it is dead.  According to the BIOS, it is not a Dell battery.  Well, yes it is, original to the machine.  Meanwhile, the battery meter shows at 100% and plugged in.
Any ideas?

Hi there, I am so stupid. I was distracted today by a recommended BIOS update that flashed on the screen. Needing a break and being naive, I clicked-on the update following the steps required.  My computer now no longer boots up. P71 20HK - Intel E3-1505M v6 I have read many posts about potential solutions........reaching out to ask whether anyone else has been silly enough to download this 'recommended' update (13/march/2018) and perhaps have a solution? Thanks in advance

DELL INSPIRON N5010

I am owner of my Dell INSPIRON N5010 , but i m not from USA , my computer hanged so my friend just restored its BIOS setting( i am not sure if these are called BIOS, but it happened as: he restarted Laptop, pressed F12 and there he restored settings then when it restarted there appeared a black screen in middle of which there is a blue box saying "Insert system password" Now i tried looking over internet all over the place I found out a few reasonable solutions 1- remove a battery with motherboard , but for that you need an expert for which my laptop might have to opened which i prefer not to get opened 2- second provide your service tag(S/N) on dellpasswords.com but that asks for $35 which i think is just too much! Now I want if the second one can be done for free or anyother viable solution thank you

Hi,
Please share the system's Service Tag and Owner's Name and the exact message you get with the code via private message (click my username and then click Start Conversation). I will try and check if a master password can be generated for this to help you reset the password.

Hello,

I am a total newbie as far as manipulating hardware. i mean I have changed and added hard rives before but not what ensues:

I was recently given two Dells - a Precision 450 and 470. Both can accept two Xeon chips. One has the two and works great(the 470)

the other only has one chip a 2,0 Ghz.

THE PROBLEM:

I removed the chip and put it back and the PC won't start. when I plus in the power cord in the back, I get:

-a light on the mobo
-no whiring fan sound (that i used to get, and i get on the 470 without even powering on)

when the chip came out(stuck to the Heatsink with the paste), i thought maybe i slightly bent a pin, so with a metal cutter blade i gently bent it back to what appears aligned while looking from both axes. i am sure that ti aligned the chip correctly, but it is true that the pins aren't near the edge of this chip, and other hardware housing the heatsink prevents a good viewing angle to 'watch' the pins go in. I did it by feeling. I was careful to not touch any part of the chip except the edge. i put it all back- but did not chcnag ethe paste- and the thing doesn't wotk. I also had removed the two fans by unplugging their plugs on the mobo, bu these went back in fine..

I would love to get another chip for this PC and use it as part of a three d render farm. times are tough, and i cannot afford a 4000USD PC, so i am trying to get these 5 year old machines to work!!

so far i have just managed to... Read more

Hello! I am a happy owner of Lenovo p50, but i got couple of questions. Firstly, Intel Xeon CPU E3-1505M v5 @ 2.80GHz should have a maximum clock speed of 3.7ghz, but thats not the case. The higher i see it goes is ~3.4ghz. I use Piriform Speccy. I tried some CPU stress tests etc, but the result is around 3.4ghz max clock. The Second question is why my bios menu is all greyed and i cannot change any setting. Yesterday i upgraded the BIOS to the latest N1EET60W (1.33 ) and today i tried to visit the BIOS to check some CPU related settings, but i found that almost every setting is locked and i cannot access it. It might be a security mechanism, but before i enter the menu i got promted to scan my fingerprint so i guess that should be it.

Hi guys. I just upgraded my processor to an AMD 8350. It replaced my Phenom. This is the 3rd day the new processor has been in the computer. First two days everything went fine. Ran Prime 95 and IBT to make sure i was up and stable. This morning (3rd day) got up, turned on the computer, and now i have less usable ram than i had last night. No matter how many times i restart, it shows less in windows than what bios shows. It says either 4,6, or 8gb usable ram (it changed just about every time too). I have reseated all the ram. I have moved them around. I have reseated the processor. I have clean installed windows 7 home premium x64. Does anyone have any ideas? This is the first issue with RAM i have ever ran into. Also, when i am in bios, and i go to the RAM settings, everything shows up like it is supposed to. Details, options, timings, etc. Not really sure where to go from here.

A:12gb ram shows in bios, only 4,6,or 8 usable shows in windows

In most AMD CPUs, the memory controller is on-die in the CPU. Maybe your FX-8350 is malfunctioning.

Also:

- Do you have the correct voltage for your memory set in BIOS?
- What kind of memory is it? (brand name, model, and speed)
- Have you tried putting the Phenom back in to see if the 12GB memory comes back?

I have been having issues with updating Bios and drivers with my 7510 since January.
It has Xeon E3 1535 cpu; 64GB 2100Mhz DDR4 ECC; Quadro m2000m and Samsung 960 PRO NVME M.2 SSD
It started after a BIOS update from Windows Update failed. I had added 4x 2400MHz ECC DDR4 to the machine and the new BIOS supported only 2100MHz So it rolled back by itself. After that I bought two 2100MHz ECC DDR4 sticks and installed those, as I knew that RAM works in pairs and always takes the speed of the lowest stick. So I tried to update the BIOS manually after that. I wasn't able to. and many things broke after that also. The computer does not shut down anymore. I have to restart it and press power when I see the POST screen. It sometimes loses USB and / or mousepad buttons (the pad and tapping on pad works fine)
I got this from Dell Outlet as Dell Refurbished in january 2017.
I have tried several things:
a) Downloaded drivers via service tag / product detection from support.dell.com. The Bios installation file always tells me that:
"The AC adapter and battery must be plugged in before the system BIOS can be flashed.Press OK when they are both plugged in or CANCEL to quit."
Ofcourse I have them plugged in, I have tried it docked, on 3 different ORIGINAL and two non-original adapters with different power output up to 240W. I had 72Wh battery on it before but ever since I have purchased a 91Wh original battery from Dell dealership to make sure everything is ok.

1. Install UNetbootin from synaptic2. Run it and create a FreeDOS USB key.3. Copy the exe BIOS update file to the USB key from inside ubuntu.4. Reboot into BIOS setup and change the boot order to boot from USB5. Boot into a live freedos session. * The USB key will offer to install freedos on your hard disk. DONT - that is ubuntucide!* Don't use himem or or that other memory thingywhatsit - just straight freedos6. C: 7. dir8. run the update

And i could install the Bios Upgrade. Now are upgraded to A13.

I just purchased a Dell Precision 5510 with a Xeon CPU and the Quadro GPU: http://www.ebay.com/itm/291755935648
I plan on promptly upgrading the SSD to a PCIe NVMe SSD if it does not have one, the 16GB RAM is fine for now but I like that I have the option to go up to 32GB when I choose to.
I had some questions for anyone who is using this for more intense work in 3D or digital imaging, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of information out there except that the Quadro 1000m is mostly better than a GTX 960-970m GeForce card because most 3D software is more compatible with it and it is more efficient in rendering which means better performance overall – is this true or just marketing for a lower powered GPU?
I mainly use Maya, Cinema 4D, After Effects and Photoshop in my workflow, most of the work is performed by the CPU but a decent GPU helps to boost render times with certain software and plugins for said software.
I read that the Xeon CPU is built for 24/7 high load server work and enterprise solutions and that it is more effective at heat dissipation than a GeForce variant. I really liked the idea of the laptop handling heat and performace better in this workstation type of a laptop, I plan to keep it cooled with a pad because I know that rendering can be a huge task for most laptops. What I gathered from that info is that I could use this for rendering and not really worry about frying the mobo like might happen with an i7 and GTX combina... Read more

I'm posting this from work, so I don't have the memory dumps from the BSODs but I will attempt to post them when I get home. I'm hoping someone will have seen a similar problem and now how to resolve it.

Up until 5 days ago I had XP64 installed on my primary system. It worked perfectly, except once every two or three months a JMRAID.SYS driver would blue screen the system. I then installed an MSDN copy of Win7 Home Premium in trial mode, but it immediately began blue screening. Here are the specs:

Western Digital 7200RPM 640GB SATA II
NEC 16X DVD-RW

The symptoms are that 1-2 hours after booting the system it will crash with a bugcheck B4 or 116 in drivers NTOSKRNL.SYS or DGXKRNL.SYS. The other symptom is that SiSoft Sandra will lock up in the GPGPU Encryption Test, but only when preceding it with other tests in burn-in mode. Running the test immediately after boot will work fine. "Lock up" means that the system freezes; even the mouse won't move. Upon reboot there are no events in event viewer that correspond with the time of lockup. Is there something I can do to make this program work?
TIA

Hi guys...wondering if anyone can offer advice... I'm using an Advent model 3.4ghz Pentium Northwood. Sisoft Sandra told me that my cpu fan had failed. I'm pretty much a novice, but gritted my teeth and swapped out the heat sink with a new one. Sisoft still tells me it has failed.....or is running at 1400rpm. I've taken the side off and checked...and it is running, as is the case fan I added. I've also changed out the power supply for a better one, and that too is running no problem. The cpu temperature is around 48-50 degrees. Could anyone suggest what it may be? Any help much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A:sisoft sandra fan failure.

must be some type of error then, expecially if the fan is running, what exactly is Sisoft Sandra? some type of program that tells u about ur cpu?

I need to locate a copy of Sisoft Sandra that will run on Win95b.
Tried the 8.11 (2001te standard) version as well as the latest.
Both gave me an invalid file format error code.
Anyone know which version I need and where I might download it?

A:Sisoft Sandra for win95b???

I have Sandra version 2001.0.7.10 on my hard drive. It's about 2.5 Mb in size. If you can't find one anywhere else, I can email it to you.

I tried SiSoft Sandra today and it informed me that I should have a screen refresh rate of 75Hz. When I tried it out the images on my LCD had fuzzy vertical lines throughout. Not so bad that I couldn't see things just bad enough that it was very poor quality. What's up with that? I guess I don't understand the "refresh rate" settings and what they do exactly. Any help?

A:SiSoft Sandra tellin' me what to do with my image quality!?

OK so I didn't read into it enough and I should have ignored that tip cause I have an LCD. I now have some new questions involving the 'Services' on XP. Sandra is telling me I don't need to have some services running if I don't want them taking up brain power...Secondary Logon...SNMP Service...and Windows Image Aquisition. Since I really don't know what these things do..exactly, I'm not sure if I really can set them to a manual access. How do I know if I need them? Do I?

I have downloaded SiSoft Sandra system info and benchmarking software to test my hard drives. I ran the test and the results were very erratic! Then I stopped windows search service which was indexing files (net stop "windows search") and tried it again. The results were totally different! Now I seriously doubt that this service does not affect performance and loading times of programs and games :-\ I thought it should run with some low priority, thus pause when other other software wants to read or write to disk, but now I am not sure. Also when I check performance monitor disk I see that SearchIndexer.exe has IO priority "normal". Do I have something badly configured or this Sandra test is just not relevant to judge it?

A:Windows search vs Sisoft Sandra 2009

The search indexing should stop when there is other hard drive activity like playing a game scanning for viruses etc.

Hi
I'm using W7 Ultimate 64 bit and I could not start Sisoft Sandra Lite 2011a (17.20).
The process of installation finishes without any problems, but when I run Sisoft Sandra nothing happens. It shows start screen, but after that nothing happens. When I click on Sisoft Sandra window, it said "Program Not responding" In task manager I see 2 processes connected with Sisoft Sandra.
Any advice.
Thanks

A:Sisoft Sandra 2011 Trial Not responding!

Welcome to Seven Forums ehasanov. I have been using Sisift Sandra for years, and have had this happen twice when updating to the newest version. Going back to the previous version always worked again, and then when the next new version came out, it again worked. So twice I ended up leapfrogging a version. BTW I currently am using Sandra Lite 2011 (17.20) with no problems, so it is hit or miss depending on individual systems.

You can try the previous version, or any version before that.

when i was on win98 i got 42000 in sandra, now in xp i get max of 25000, is this a software problem with sandra? or are my hard drives messed? did anyone change and get a lower score like me?

A:SiSoft Sandra hard drive bench

which version of SiSoft Sandra are you using.

You may have to install an ide driver and ide utility for your motherboard chipset to turn ata/33/66/100/133 on in winXP.

Of course that all depends on your hard drive or system and winXP.

Hello,

Just as the title said, I'm having problem getting all 4 sticks of RAM to work.

My memory are OCZ SLI-Ready (4 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400), model OCZ2N800SR2GK. I've tested each of them with memtest86+ and determined that they are working.

My motherboard is a BFG nForice 650i Ultra, which according to the manual, should support up to 8GB of DDR2 800 memory. So this shouldn't be a mobo restriction either.

As for OS, I am dual-booting with Ubuntu 8.04 and Windows Vista Ultimate (both are 32-bit). NOTE that I am fully aware of the 32-bit vs 64-bit limitation when it come to large memory support. However, I want to know why even the BIOS would report only 3GB. Only then would I go out and get a 64-bit OS for replacement.

I've done some googling, some one from another forum said in order for their BIOS to properly recognize over 3GB of RAM they had to enable something called 'Memory Mapping'. I don't see anything like that in my BIOS (not a surprise since the person above used a mobo from a different manufacturer).

So, any idea what's going on here?

A:4GB installed, but only 3GB shows up in OS & BIOS

Might want to boot with each stick of memory and see if one of them is bad - and/or run memtest to find any errors. Could just be a bad stick.

A:Hardrive shows on bios, but not on OS

Well at least BIOS (cmos) sees it.

I believe your best approach would be to download your Hard Drive diagnostic tool, to test for any errors.

Hey guys,
Reaching out for some help on this weird one here...
I have a clients Toshiba Portege M400-S4031 laptop which got a pretty crazy virus. Long story short I tried to format the drive and reinstall windows, formatting the drive proved no issue... Ive tried a few different methods, windows format, diskpart... but everytime I run thru the win 7 setup it says no HDD found even though it shows up in BIOS.

I combed thru the BIOS for AHCI\SATA settings, anything that may help.... no luck,

I then tried for kicks to install win 7 on the HDD in a different PC, then put that HDD in the Toshiba and it started the windows loading screen then obviously blued out due to incompatible drivers, but shows me the HDD is def being seen, just not in the install!!!

To top it off I went into UBCD environment, again the HDD shows up! I can run a chkdsk on it, diagnostic (which passes). I was going to try to install it to a USB but that got shut down quick due to the partition issue.

Any ideas??? Installing Win 7 Ulti, 32 bit. Tried 2 DVDs and my USB install drive so far, same results on all. Any ideas are welcome!!!

Oh PS i also already tried updating the BIOS to the latest 3.7 version... no change :-\

A:HDD shows in BIOS but not in Win 7 install...

Just to add Ive also tried multiple known working hard drives in this machine, all same result.

I have read many posts attempting to solve my own issue all the while failing. Some proper assitance will be needed so I needed to create my own post.

I have a Seagate 1.5TB HDD I have been using for a couple years. My girlfriend is a photographer and she filled up the drive. Prior to being able to afford a new one she crashed windows and it would no longer start up.

Bought a new drive, thought my task would be simple. however, upon booting windows 7 to my new drive the old drive had not shown up. I checked the bios and it is visible there. The Data on that drive is irreplaceble. So by attempting to solve my own issue here is what I have tried.

-Checking bios for other drive boot options
-switching the cables on the drive multiple times
-using a different computer
-checking disk management
-using seagate drive tools
-using windows boot disk
-using Memory Diagnostic Tools

only other method I have read but havent tried is using an external casing in an attempt to get it to apper, however I have my doubts on whether that would work. (If I am wrong please correct me)

So to be Clear
-HDD with essential data on it. (Seagate 1.5TB)
-Shows up in Bios
-Does not show up in Window 7, Disk management, or in Seatools. Also will not appear for a Windows install disk.

I appreciate The Help!!!!

A:HDD shows up in BIOS but not Windows

Is the 1.5 TB drive the one that had Windows installed to it? If so, it is pretty likely you are screwed.. I mean, there are some options you have, but none have a real high success rate on a drive that has failed.

Check out the tools on Hirens boot CD. Boot from that, and have a go with a few of those tools, that is your best chance now outside of professional recovery. Professional recovery costs will strongly test how "irreplaceable" those pictures are.

because of crashing problems and no real information to explain why i decided to get sisoft sandra.

when i do a benchmark on processor arithmetic it always freezes up my computer as in the mouse wont move and cant do nothing. this is the same thing that happens with other programs but it is more intermittent there.

i ran the test several times with the same freezing happening all the time. i run other tests and none of them do this but some tests just seem to go on forever as if they are stuck in a loop. maybe its the program i dont know.

before the freeze my 1st core goes to 100% then seconds later freeze and i have to reset the computer.

i ran prime95 before i got ssisoft sandra and it ran no problems which seemed to me it wasnt doing a thorough enough test. the computer isnt overheating, i have auto fan control and when it gets to ovet 50c the fan goes on max and i can tell by the sound and it only did that on prime95

A:sisoft sandra 2010 processor arithmetic benchmark

Normally, Sandra's benchmarks DO freeze the mouse and keyboard for a while. The progress meter will eventually update to a higher percentage, and then it will freeze again. It does this until it's finished the test.

The reason for this is that the results are more accurate if the CPU isn't wasting cycles on extra stuff like the mouse, etc. Sandra minimizes the CPU time of everything it can, so that it can concentrate on the test.

My quad core can take up to 5 minutes to run some of the tests, esp. the memory ones. How long is your machine locking up on you?
