Unexpected crashes and alternate BiOS loading

Q: Unexpected crashes and alternate BiOS loading

A week ago I got a blue screen of death which I've never gotten on this (~3-4 year old) machine. When it booted back up it loaded a BiOS I'd never seen before Gigabyte UEFI double BiOS. Over the next several days the computer was rebooted and the normal BiOS came up without an issue. 3 days ago the computer was started up, shut down and restarted. On the second restart It got hung up on the Windows screen with this error

I restarted and everything worked just fine. I ran antivirus and anti malware scans which came up with nothing. I also ran chkdsk which came up just fine. Every time I turn the computer on sometimes it's fine, sometimes I get the alternate BiOS and sometimes Windows loads with a messed up screen resolution (which is fixed upon restart).

I've tried to read on this an other forums but I don't know what's going on. I don't know whether a plug is loose or if the motherboards failing or what. I'm not sure what other checks I can do. The intermittent nature of a seemingly big problem is inexplicable. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Sincerely,
Andrew

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I'm Trying to Update My Computer's BIOS but i came across quite a odd (and stupid) error when updating my BIOS, apparently my OS isn't compatible with the upgrade, but why does my OS effect the upgrade when the BIOS is Completely spereate from the OS itself? i want to know why i can't upgrade my BIOS because i'm not on Vista, what does my OS have to do with my BIOS? and i would also like to know how i can update my BIOS from a CD instead of this limiting installer that wont let me update because im on windows 10.

A:BIOS Update on a Alternate OS

Biso update done inside the OS requires it be compatible, you can do it from a boot cd which bypasses the OS.

My computer suddenly crashed twice today .

Looking at the event viewer :

The first time it crashed said :
The previous system shutdown at 15:33:17 on ‎24/‎06/‎2016 was unexpected.

The second time :
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

My computer crashes and comes back on , like a normal restart .

Let's try looking at these 2 sets of reports:1)  Please run this report collecting tool (even though you may not be reporting BSOD's) so we can provide a complete analysis:  http://omgdebugging.com/bsod-inspector/When done a Notepad document will open with the name of the file and it's location.By default it'll be a .zip file located on your DesktopSimply upload the .zip file with your next post and we'll move on from there. If it doesn't work for you, then please try this:  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/576314/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-posting-instructions-windows-10-81-8-7-vista/2)  Please do the following:- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")- right click on the "Administrative Events" heading- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."- save the file as Admin.evtx- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility:  http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

I have a relatively new computer that a techy friend built for me in the last six months or so, and it's been performing really well thus far, but this evening, I was just watching youtube when the display "crashed". I checked my monitor and all the connections to it, and they all turned out fine. There was a weird buzzing in my headphones as this happened.

I tried to push the manual restart button on the case, but that didn't appear to work, so I used the power button itself which turned it off. When I booted it back up and logged in, the computer was SUPER laggy, and I couldn't even open the task managed. I used ctrl+alt+del to try to gain access, but a message box popped up and told me something to the effect of "the task managed cannot be accessed with ctrl+alt+del".

One more restart and the computer seemed to come good, and after running a virus scan with Pareto Logic Internet Security (which turned up nothing) I opened the task manager and it all seemed fine. I don't usually pay too much attention to it, but the highest running process at the time was "SBAMSvc.exe *32". I tried to research it to see if that was a problem, but I couldn't find anything conclusive.

My problem is, this machine is made of (what I understand to be) pretty decent componentry, and it's only young. Considering all I had running was Skype in the background with a facebook and youtube tab open in Firefox, I'm confused as to what could possibly have happened. I'm no... Read more

For the past several months, I've had random crashes of my HP m9340f PC. I've never been able to correlate the crashes with any specific application or activity. This computer serves as my website server (Apache), HTPC using Windows Media Center for one TV, video server for saved DVD files using the MyMovies application (for this computer and another Vista box in the home theater), and gathering weather data using Virtual Weather Station. It is rare that I even actively "work" at this computer, as most of its software is set as servers. The crashes have never happened when I am working at the computer, programming, editing, etc.

I can see nothing listed in the normal windows event viewer logs, and trying to find a possible solution using the "Check for solutions" button (or something to that affect) does nothing. I haven't been able to find anything unusual in the event viewer that precedes the crashes. The computer just seems to reboot and I get the "...shutdown was unexpected" message box.

This computer runs Vista Home Premium, 64 bit.

I would appreciate any suggestions as to where I might look for possible answers. I have several minidumps in the directory, but have no idea how or what to look for when it comes to finding what is actually causing the crashes.

Thank you.

We need the actual dmp file

If you wish to have others assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder. The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Start your own thread in the appropriate section of the forum and attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
* Briefly describe the problem history and circumstances in the same post. Somebody will attend to your query as soon as possible.

Hi!

I am having trouble with my PC:
ASUS NCCH-DL MOB
2x Xeon 2.8 GHz
2x 1 GB RAM (Kingston)
1 Nvidia Quadro FX 3000
1 Raid on the fast-track controller 2x 300 GB
1 Maxtor on the IDE Master
1 Samsung on the IDE secondary
WinXP SP2

The machine has been working fine for 2 years now. No unexpected crashes (except some application produced ones), nothing.

About 1 week ago, it started to shutdown with no warning. Just power gone. Then, after a few seconds (sometimes up to 10 sec), the machine will restart.

This also happens with no app running.

I verified Viruses - nothing
I checked malware - nothing

I tried to boot in safe-mode and it seemed that the machine ran fine (tested it on 18 hours) - no crash. This was while running the virus-scan.

I then started it up normally and tried some tests with SiSoft Sandra. Again, it crashed. But it did so at different test. Sometimes, the test went through sometimes they did not.
Same tests, no parameters changed.

Then, I rebooted and got a message saying:

*****Warning: System BOOT Fail *****
Your system maybe OverClock fail or POST interrupted.

Now, my system is not overclocked - I reset the bios to defaults before I started all my testing (BTW - it never was overclocked anyways...)

How can I narrow in on the problem?
Do any of you suffer the same experience?

Thank you,
Stefan.

The first and simplest option would be to use system restore to roll back your computer to a time before the problems started

System Restore

Another option would be to try a clean boot to remove start up items to see if the problem is caused by software/drivers clashing or causing problems

My Computer started experiencing BSOD every once in a while about 3 weeks ago, and it has progressively gotten worse, to the point where it is crashing/restarting 10+ times in a day. Computer: Not with the computer in question now, but here are some general specs. Running Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium on a pretty cheap desktop Emachine T series 3626 which came with 1g of ram and 150g of free space.

Issue: After loading bios, booting from hdd, computer loses power during vista loading screen. After 4-5 tries computer does boot successfully but can lose power again at any time with no obvious reasons as to why. Computer won't even boot in safe mode.

*Note. If the computer had been running recently however, the first boot attempt is usually successful.

I have been dealing with this problem for about a month and a half now. It seemed to pop up just after I made some changes to startup config., I copied Reason 4.0 (music production program) and World of Warcraft to my 500 gig external hard drive and have ran both those programs from either my internal HDD or external HDD and also save data on both. I may have changed bios/cmos during that time but it's unlikely. About a 6 months ago I overclocked my computer, and a year ago I installed an extra 500mb of ram. Also my tower tipped over about 2 months ago while it was running but the hit wasn't hard and the computer kept running normally. I wish I could tell you exactly when this issue started and whether or not it was before or after the changes I have made in the past month and a half but I can't remember. Anyways I've tired all sorts of solutions. Here is what I can remember doing.

Please go to C:\Windows\Minidump and zip up the contents of the folder. Then upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Left click on the first minidump file.
Hold down the "Shift" key and left click on the last minidump file.

If you don't have anything in that folder, please check in C:\Windows for a file named MEMORY.DMP. If you find it, zip it up and upload it to a free file hosting service (not RapidShare as the analysts usually can't download from it) - then post the link to it.
Then, follow the directions here to set your system for Minidumps (much smaller than the MEMORY.DMP file): Set MiniDump

A week or two ago, my Gigabyte GTS 450 died, and I bought a new EVGA GTX 650 from newegg. When I switched video cards, I also updated the drivers from 306.97 to 310.90. Ever since installing the new video card, I've been getting intermittent "crashes"; usually while browsing reddit or some other mundane activity. I put crashes in quotes as I'm not getting any error codes, my machine -which had been extremely stable previous to this- simply shuts down. It's as if someone had flipped the power switch; leaving nothing in the event log except an entry marking an unexpected shutdown.

It's odd to me that this occurs only while the GPU is NOT under load. I can play LoL just fine, and even newer more taxing games like Diablo 3 or Borderlands 2. The main correlation I've found with the crashes is when I'm downloading something; sometimes an image on imgur or buffering a youtube video. Normal net traffic such as chatting on mumble with friends or watching a video stream don't seem to trigger a crash. I've found I can pretty consistently cause a crash by attempting to download a game from Steam. I'm unsure how these types of net traffic differ such that one causes a crash and another doesn't.

However these crashes don't happen in safe mode, or if I disable my video card drivers. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the video drivers or perhaps some other system component. I'm assuming it's the video dri... Read more

I don't have Windows so I'm reliant on using the bootable ISO images.  Looking at the README, it's clear that 2.34 can't be updated using the ISO updater - and when I tried I got and "unexpected error" with no more information. I've also tried downgrading to 2.33 first using the ISO updater so that I could then update straight to 2.48 but this has the same result. Is there any way I can do this? Cheers,

For the past few days, whenever I start up my desktop in the morning, I am requested to set system time and date in the BIOS which have been zeroed out. By the same token, I notice that several parameters (not all of them) have been changed : RAID controller was activated (I leave it deactivated), IDE mode is changed from P-ATA to mixed, boot sequence and language are changed, etc.

This incident occurs regularly when the pc has been shut down for a few hours, for example all night. It doesn't occur if I do a reboot.

My T460P is currently on 2.13. I want to (well, i don't but hibernate doesn't work at all) upgrade to BIOS version 2.19 which is current at the time of this writing.I got r07uj16wd.iso but this upgrade fails with "unexpected error" without any hint as to what failed whatsoever. You seem to have done some backward-incomaptible changes in 2.15 so maybe do it step by step:Upgrade to 2.15: OKUpgrade to 2.17: OKUpgrade to 2.18: OKUpgrade to 2.19: Fails, again this "unexpected error" without any details on WHAT the error is. Did anyone managed to use the r07uj16wd.iso ISO-image to upgrade to 2.19?PS: And yes, the md5sum of the downloaded ISO is correct.

Alright guys, here is the scoop. I just got a refurbished ASUS K75DE laptop, and it came with Win8 on it. I am wanting to run a dual boot with Win7, so I disabled fast-boot just fine, and went into the UEFI BIOS and disabled the secure boot.

While I was there, I did like I have always done and set a BIOS boot-up password. I then proceed to boot to my Win7 installer USB Flash drive, but I was running low on battery power so I aborted the install and shut the computer down to try again later.

Now however when I get into BIOS to select boot priority, all options are grayed out except for system time and a few other non-essentials. At the bottom of the first BIOS screen it says "User Level : User" and I can't seem to find a way to reverse this issue. So now I'm stuck, can't boot to anything but the HDD because it is first by default.

I know this is a Windows 8 forum, but I have literally spent 6 hours Googling this problem and have made no gains. I did update my BIOS version to the latest because someone said they couldn't change any boot order options, but it made no change.

Please help! Any ideas might prove helpful. I've been posting all over the net on forums seeking a solution. Any info or clarification you need, just let me know.

A:ASUS K75DE Windows 8 & 7 dual boot, unexpected BIOS prob

You might have to call Asus on that, I use Asus MBs and that's never happened to me. You should have been prompted to enter your password upon entering the BIOS. There should be a way to enter the password you set.

Can you re-install your current BIOS? That might reset it.

Hi,

My copy of XP has started crashing on loading. It gets to the black loading screen with the Logo, and then freezes, forcing a reset. I've tried loading in safe mode, but that also doesn't work.
After this I tried reinstalling windows, which seemed to work. but then after the restart in the installtion it freezes close to finishing.
I don't have a clue whats causing this or how to fix it, any help?

Hi. first time here =x

anyway let me get to the point. I just bought a copy of FF8 from my nearest retail bookstore and it installed pretty smoothly (less than 1minute, give or take). However when i try to run the program all i could see was a black screen and nothing else. After that when i pressed ctrl + alt + delete and pressed on task manager, the FF8 program had the status of 'Not Responding'.

I also tried to changed to compatibility mode to WinXP,Windows 2000 and Windows 98/Me but it also results in the same problem -- black screens.

Also when i changed compatibility mode to Windows Me/98 i recieve this error :
"The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click OK to terminate the problem."
This error is not seen when i change mode to 2000 and XP(SP2).

is there anyway to run the game without installing any new 'old' graphic cards?

I looked and couldn't find any on going or previous threads about my specific problem so if there is please excuse me.
I am running WinXp Pro with Firefox 37, it has ran fine without problems really until now. Started Firefox and before it even opened I get a crash report that gives me the option to restart it or quit. No matter how many times I try to restart, even in safe mode it does the same thing, crashes before opening. So, I uninstalled it and removed all traces of it in my Reg and did a search for any remaining bits and deleted them. Even download Revo and it shows no signs of Firefox/Mozilla anywhere. Still had the origal install file so I reinstalled, did the same thing. Download a new version, did the same thing. So then I downloaded Opera and I'm using Internet Exploder 8 all this time which won't connect to certain sites I reckon because it's no longer supported. But, anyway I download Opera for win xp several times with the same result, it wouldn't load/install. And yes I turned off my Norton antivirus to install. So All I have is IE 8 and it's as worthless as you know what. Anyone have any ideas?
Oh! and I did a virus scan and a Malwarebytes scan with no results. Something doesn't want me online.

Hi there,

It could be that Windows XP is no longer supported but try this, download/install "Google Chrome" and see if the same issue happens.

By any chance, do you have another computer at your place running Windows XP? If so, install Mozilla Firefox on that computer and if assuming everything works fine on that computer, then the issue relies on that specific computer you're using.

Hello TSG! It's been a long time since I found another problem which I can not fix by me self. But now, I have found one that is driving me mad! So I bought the game PURE from gamestop, and installed it on my windows 7 machine. My computer passes beyond the Recommended requirements, so there shouldn't be any problem with that. Anyway, it first took quite a while to install, I'd say about 5-7 minutes installing, and once it was done, I couldn't wait to play because I LOVED the demo. So I boot the game up and it takes like 20-30 secs to load the first loading, and then I get the intro video of the game, then another loading screen with the title, "PURE", written on it. This one takes something about less than 1 minute to load and then it asks me for creating a new sav and all, and once I'm done with that, the game stands on black screen for 1-2 secs then I get the program not responding error. I have downloaded the latest drivers for my graphic card, and have tried the compatibility settings, but none of these seem to work. I also installed the game on my Windows XP partition, but I got the same error. Then after all that, I took the game back to Gamestop and exchanged it for another copy because I thought it was the CD's fault. But no, even after installing it with the new copy, my game keeps crashing after it passes the save screen. I have no idea what could be causing this problem, as my computer is really fast and al my drivers are u... Read more

My laptop has been really slow recently. It's been taking ages to load up on start-up, run programs and shut down.

I think it may just be a few programs loading up on startup but i'm not sure. Is there anything I can do to check whats causing it?

Exactly what it says above.

I use a program to support a Flash chat client, and this program forces links to open in IE. This presents a problem when I accidentally click a .png link, as IE7 opens, quickly flashes the Quicktime logo (which it uses to load .png, apparently), freezes, and Windows Explorer stops wroking right until I kill IE in the task manager. To clarify "stops working right," whenever I click any other window in the task bar, it just flashes instead of changing to that window.

Firefox is my normal browser, but as I said above, this program forces links to open in IE. I tested this by navigating to a .png image in IE independent of the chat client, and I get the same problem, so it isn't caused by the client.

I'm running an HP Pavilion m9040n media PC. Vista Home Premium SP1, 32-bit. 3GB DDR2 RAM. Upgraded with a GeForce 8800GT graphics card.

I know IE doesn't support .png as much as Firefox does, but other people who use the same client and click the same links don't have crashing problems, so...

Thanks!

This needs to be addressed
Since IE7 is now and has been out, we need this information posted when we suggest a Repair Install. You can use either one:

Code:
You cannot perform a repair installation of Windows XP if Internet Explorer 7 is installed. If you do, Internet Explorer will not work because the repair installation does not restore the earlier version files in the %ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer folder resulting in an incompatibility with the Internet Explorer 6 files that the repair placed in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder.
To uninstall Internet Explorer 7:
1. Start / Run / appwiz.cpl / OK.
2. Select Internet Explorer 7 and press Remove. If you can't find Internet Explorer 7:
A. Install the Recovery Console.
B. Restart you computer and start the Recovery Console.
C. Type CD ie7\spuninst and press Enter.
D. Type batch spuninst.txt and press Enter.

Hi,
I have a Gateway laptop running Windows XP Home Edition (SP2). During the XP loading screen (the black screen with XP logo and green status bar) I would get a blue screen of death. The error message of this BSOD was:

STOP: c0000135 {Unable To Locate Component}
This application has failed to start because basekgjl32 was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

I was able to boot into safe mode and run a scan using AVG 7.5. I do not know what version of virus definitions I had.

AVG found a file named "basekgjl32.dll" in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 directory. AVG classified it as a trojan horse named BackDoor.Generic9.AJUI. AVG successfully healed it. I tried rebooting to see if that fixed the problem, but it did not. I still receive the same BSOD. To make matters worse, now I cannot boot into safe mode. I now receive the same BSOD when I try.

I have researched this BackDoor trojan and similar ones like it, but I have yet to find any methods of successfully removing it or dealing with this type of scenario.

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Andrew

What do I do next? Buy a new PC perhaps?

I think the registry is corrupted but is there a way to bypass the registry checking?

I don't use WMP, but decided to give it a try as part of a test about some audio cutout and freeze problems with foobar player being discussed in a General Support thread and elsewhere. After adding the ASIO plugin from SourcForge and adjusting settings, I removed the two default locations from the library and added my own music folder. WMP then started to load mine, but after three or four items, the program crashed. On every reopening, it starts to load more of mine, then crashes again within a few seconds. Any ideas what might be going on? Thanks,

ASIO plug in - was that ASIO4ALL? If it was, that can be iffy. for some it works OK, for others it can cause other problems and crashes or be flakey. There is a lot of discussion (mostly negative) about it on the recording forums I visit.

Hello, I've gone through a bit of the internet trying to find help with a problem I've been having with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2. Currently on Onderon (first planet I went to after Telos), my game keeps crashing on loading screens between docks and the market square, and the market square and the cantina (early parts of Onderon). I've updated my drivers to current, and tried (though failed, for some reason) to update the game, too. When it crashes, the KOTOR style mouse turns to the regular white windows mouse, freezing the loading screen right near the end of the loading bar, and coming up with the message that the program has to be closed.

I found a similar problem someone on these forums had (http://forums.techguy.org/games/933566-kotor-2-crashes.html), this was the only instance I could find of an issue similar to mine?

As for specifications, I use the Mss32.dll fix for Win 7, running the game in Win XP SP 2 Compatibility mode. My graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT for Windows 7 32 Bit, 4 GB memory, a dual core processor @ 1.87 GHz on a Dell Inspiron the precise name of which I don't directly know. I'd really appreciate any help as I've only been playing the game for about 4 days and since I'm really enjoying it, I'd hate to have to give it up.

If it is still under warranty, you can call them and they won't charge you.

Otherwise, my first suspect would be your hard drive. Try booting it up with any Windows installation disc, or your recovery disc. If it boots properly from the cd, you can see whether or not your hard drive is corrupted, or dead.

Message back with what you find, and we'll go from there.

Hello,

I had recently done some modification to my wife's computer and now it will no longer load up. It goes through the hardware screen for the motherboard, begins to show the Windows 7 icon, but suddenly stops and restarts itself as the icon begins to come together.

Today, I swapped out her motherboard, processor, and graphics card with new ones. All of the cables are hooked up correctly, but I'm unsure what the problem could be. Below are the parts I have put in it now:
Sapphire Radeon R7 250 (graphics card)
ASUS M5A78-M LX Plus (motherboard)
AMD FX 6-Core 3.5 GHZ 14.0 MB (processor)
If there's more that's needed to be posted, I will look it up, but that's what was put into it today.

This blue screen stays up for less than a second, needed to video record it to get the numbers. Windows doesn't load in normal mode, or any of the safe modes. I have tried chkdsk /r and /p. Bootcfg /scan fails, and /rebuild also fails. I have also cleared Cmos on my motherboard, which didn't work either. I also tested the ram, tried booting with 1 of 3 sticks in 3 times rotating the sticks, I wouldn't think all 3 would fail at the same time. The HD does show serial numbers tho and appears to be working. This all started when i was running a virus scanner, it crashed, and the problems started. Any help is appreciated, I have yet to try fixmbr, and a repair install. The fixmbr says it could cause a problem with the HD, that is the reason I haven't tried it yet. I have been having problems with my family computer where Windows gets to the laoding screen and crashes, which it does in a loop and then occasioanlly turns on. I had this problem a while back but a change of hard drive and a clean install of Windows 7 (it was previously XP) seemed to of cured it. But last night the problem returned, there was a BSOD out of no where and then it returned into its looping process.

I switched out the current hard drive, RAM and CPU with my other gaming computer and it also caused that to crash. So I first took out the hard drive and it still crashed but swithing the RAM again seemed to of cured the problem. However, when I put different RAM in the computer with the initial problems it still came up with the same problem.
