ThinkPad T440s - refresh windows 10

Q: ThinkPad T440s - refresh windows 10

i've got a T440s that was upgraded to windows 10 about 6 months ago. after installing a new brother printer yesterday, the machine won't boot any more; it just goes directly to automatic repair, then diagnostics, neither of which help. i tried several system restore points, but sr always fails telling me it can't copy the registry. i ran the lenovo hardware diagnostics which fails in the targeted read test of the hard drive with bad sectors. i am backing up all the data (which is on the solid-state drive ?) manually from the cli prompt (that still works) before i do anything else. next planned step is to run the bad sectors tool). i'm wondering if the bad sectors are where the registry (or its backup) is stored, and if so, then will "fixing" the bad sectors destroy the registry to the point where i need to do a refresh. this is the first time i've dealt with a system with a hybrid drive (ssd for start-up & os, hd for storage. since it was originally a windows 8.1 machine will running the refresh put back windows 10, and if so, will it know where to write the refreshed os files to the ssd and hd? all suggestions appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In the past, I have customized my Trackpoint/Touchpad/mouse advanced settings via the Control Panel/Mouse/Thinkpad tab.  Sometime recently, that tab has disappeared and my customization is gone.  I've tried everything that I can think of to get that tab back, but nothing works.  I have: * Verified that my BIOS is set to enable the Trackpoint and pad.* Uninstalled and reinstalled the Synaptics device driver, version 18.0.7.109, plus rebooted.* Run Lenovo System Update and installed all relevant driver updates.* Tried to install the Synaptics Touchpad Firmware for Windows 732/764/864/B64, but I get "Reflash cannot find firmware updates for the devices on this system". Any advice?

First off, I am an Electronics Technician by trade.  I have 25 years of experience with all kinds of electronics.  This one has me scratching my head.  This all  started because I had an issue with my touchpad so I changed it out.  During the process I removed all power including, power cord, external battery and internal battery.  Replaced the mouse pad and put everything back together.  When I went to power it up I got no response.  Here are the things I have tried. 1. Hold the power button for a minute.  Tap it 10 times then hold anothe minute.2. Remove all batteries and press the power button for 1 minute.3. Remove all batteries and the RAM module and press the power button.4. Press the reset button through the cover on the back of the machine.   5. Lastly I disconnected the CMOS batter along with all other power.  The last step actually let me me boot up my machine and everything was working like normal.  I was happy I had fixed the problem, but I didn't.  Once I shut down the machine it still will not power back up.  I have to disconnect the CMOS battery again in order for me to powe up the machine.  Once the machine comes back I updated the BIOS to the latest version and that didn't help either.  I am stumped!  Any advice that anyone can give me is greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the power button.  Make sure the little cable is inserted all the way and is straight.  Also, the little board with the actual button might not be mounted correctly.

Everything was working perfectly fine on my T440s with Windows 10 Pro, I am not sure what caused the issue, May be a driver upgrade touchpad is no more working. I suspect that it's not a hardware issue because button clicks works and scrolling in web pages works. The Driver version which I do have currently installed is 19.0.17.115 from Synaptics.  If I open the mouse properties I can change settings for TrackPoint but TrackPad options are grayed out. Can't make any changes.  I tried different drivers from Lenovo, Reinstalled Windows 10, Tried Resetting Windows 10 and Reinstalled drivers but nothing works. I would like to hear from any T440s owners which version of driver they use and if everything is well with Windows 10. I am thinking of making some modifications in the registry to get it back to work.  Any help ?? Thanks in advance!!

I have recently purchased a 29" ultrawide LG monitor, with a 21:9 aspect ratio. When I plug it in, it recommends a 2560x1080 screen resolution. I was disappointed as the display settings on my thinkpad only go up to a 1960x1080 resolution.  Is there any way to achieve the correct resolution? I am currently connecting to the monitor using the dual DVI-D cable that came with the monitor.  I am wondering if there is a driver update that will support this, or a change in connection method? Thank you To update:  I am now connected via an HDMI/Display port cable instead of the DVI cable. This has not given me the option to increase my screen resolution in my display settings.

FYI - After much research and consultation I have fixed it. Turns out I needed to update my Intel HD Graphics Driver to the latest version which supports a 2560x1080 resolution. I also purchased the HDMI/Display port cable which didn't solve the problem but probably helps with quality.

HI,I have an annoying issue with my new T440s.Trackpad stops working after I get it out of sleep. In fact, it works partially (two finger, edge scrolling is OK).Even I re-install the driver, it won't work everytime.Any suggestions? Is this a hardware issue?thank you.

Just more information about the issue: The trackpad is acting like being disabled in BIOS.2 finger scroll , side scroll are fine. When my screen dims down, I touch the pad and screen is back up."enable touchpad" is grayed out in Mouse Properties under control panel. All trackpad features are fine, only the mouse is not working.Another thing I noticed: when I get to Windows login screen works fine (sometimes), but then, once I get authenticated and get Windows loaded, its stops working.BTW, I'm using Windows 7 Driver reinstall, reload factory image, enabled/disabled in BIOS.. nothing helps.Hopefuly a Lenovo stuff would read this and share some thoughts. This is my second 440s replacement. Hi you guys!I would like to excuse my bad English in advance. This happened like three days ago. Regular reboot. No forced updates or any installation, just an ordinary reboot. But then, all of a sudden, I couldn't work my ass out of the boot screen. It doesn't go in to loop either, just standing there, acting like a d*ck. I've tried ALL F-buttons but none has worked at all. But if I FN-lock them, I can change the brightness and that kind of stuff - SO, it's responding, but nothing more nothing less. And because I can't choose different boot, neither go into BIOS, I feel kinda f-ed (did my motherboard actually brick it self?!)Tried so far: BIOS battery, int+ext batterypack, w/ and w/o AC adapter, disconnected the harddrive, disconnected the RAM. And you know what? The same screen. ALL of the times.Any suggestions? Try to recover bad sectors (if any) in another computer? I would love to have USB>S-ATA right now, but I'm going to use it ONCE, so that's out of question.Kthxbye, love <888

I bought my P50 in March of 2016. I've been very happy with my purchase overall, the only disappointment has been the low key-rollover property of the built-in keyboard. I am a programmer/game developer, and it is important for me to have a keyboard that supports multiple simultaneous keystrokes. After taking ownership, I found that the keyboard drops strokes with as few as 2 keys already held down, which makes it pretty useless for gaming.  I work around this by plugging in a USB keyboard when I need to test my game projects. At the time I purchased, there was only one option for the keyboard. Today, I was browsing the Lenovo online store, and noticed that there's now an option for a backlit keyboard in addition to the standard non-backlit keyboard.  Under "Help Me Decide" it says: Lenovo has refreshed the keyset on all ThinkPad laptops, outfitting them with the ThinkPad Precision Keyboard. This new keyset allows a more comfortable, fluid and accurate typing experience with it's slate of individually rounded, spacious, and low-set keys. The ThinkPad Precision Keyboard simultaneously delivers a modern look and feel to your ThinkPad.*Select models are available with a backlit keyset as standard, or as an optional upgrade.*Most 15.6" models come standard with full keyboard including dedicated number pad. I am wondering if this refreshed keyboard means a  higher rollover. Hello I've got T440s (20AQ004URT) and I want to connect it to my Sony Bravia TV (Miracast certified) wirelessly.I've made clean Windows 10 installation. At this point WiDi connection works 8 times out of 10. Then, Windows automatically installs necessary drivers (for touchpad, graphics, etc.). At this point I could hardly get WiDi working, it starts to connect to my TV and then just fails. So, I went to Intel forum and found out that I should install latest drivers from Intel (graphics, networking and Intel WiDi Pro software). I have installed all that stuff, but nothing changed. My hardware seems to be compatible with Intel WiDi Pro, as I could install necessary software. Also, my antivirus/firewall is disabled. But I still can't get WiDi working - laptop sees my TV, it starts to connect, my TV shows connection, but then it fails.  Please, help me resolve this issue.

Upgrading from Windows 8.1 (touch working) to Windows 10 I lost touch functionality. I've tried replacing the LCD myself after cracking the first one just to verify the ribbons were connected behind the LCD assembly (factory tape/glue is holding them down). I haven't tried ordering the Windows 8.1 Restore CDs and rolling back. I can confirm it's not a hardware issue. I'm guessing it's firmware related. Similar to the Yoga touch problems Lenovo's been having and those users upgrading to Windows 10. Checking the forums it looks like updates have been hit or miss. I've tried downloading Windows Tab Installer Package, the Yoga LCD Firmware Updates (unable to pass hidident.exe to update), downloading the SCCM package and looking for any type of installer and none's available. Leaning towards a firmware incompatibility. Can anyone at Lenovo confirm this for me? I can understand the 20AQ had a limited run compared to 20AR (non touch) and the Yoga Series. Still it'd be nice to have someone confirm. It's a shame the laptop is only a few years old. If there's a beta firmware package for the touch digitizer I'd be happy to try. Intermittent response would be better than none. Thanks all,

My guess is that you deployed Win10 in legacy mode, instead of UEFI mode.  You can confirm this in msinfo32.exe, look for "BIOS Mode" in the right-hand panel.  It needs to be "UEFI" if you want to use TPM 2.0.

Hello everyone. I'd like to know why win7 64bit decides by itself to auto refresh a window minute and literally the next second or two later it does not.
Lets say, I save a pic from the net, just before I go into the browser I already have my downloads folder open. I save a couple pics and I go back to the open folder and the pics are there at the bottom (I sort by date modified). I go back to the browser save another pic or anything, I go back to the folder and the pic or whatever is not there, so i have to refresh myself. I was just in that folder 10 seconds ago I seen no reason for it to not refresh now when it just did it 10 seconds ago. Now, I have not changed any setting regarding this or any explorer action. I can't even find an auto refresh option anywhere.
So how is this possible? What the heck is wrong with this OS?

I must say, I will soon be at my wits end with this OS. I paid $300 to spent more time organizing and moving files around. A lot more time. They have really screwed up explorer this time around. Explorer in XP was essentially perfect (I never even touched Vista on my machines. My wife has Vista). I'm starting to believe that win7 was just a money grab and that of the many problems with this OS will not be fixed in any hotfix or service packs, but win8 will be all better just as long as you spend another $300. A:Explorer windows auto refresh then don't auto refresh. Why?

We have a thread for this kind of thing. I can't find it at the moment. I think unsubscribed from it on accident, but I'm pretty sure its in general discussion. Explorer is working like it always does. It can be annoying that it doesn't always refresh, but I'm sure you can find a pattern, like how many added files it takes or how long it takes to "auto-refresh". The reason you don't here anything bad about Windows 7 is for three reasons. 1) you haven't looked hard enough. There are plenty of news stories with Mac lovers saying its Vista with a new paint job. 2) XP was as unstable as Charles Manson on Crack at the best of times when it first came out. 3) Vista was, well Vista. MS claimed it would run fine on 512MB of RAM, so people were installing it on old computers, and new computer were being bought that were seriously underpowered. When it wouldn't run worth a crap, everyone hated it. Not to mention the incompatibility issues that no one saw between 2000 and XP. If you didn't use Vista at all, the changes do seem a lot more drastic. If you don't like it, go back to XP SP3. Problem solved!!!!!!!

Hi there.I'm new here but old to IBM/Lenovo  I'm writing you because I'm experiencing a challenge with my t440s and I'm getting crazy.About one month ago, I performed a clean reinstall of Windows 7 pro on my t440s, also installing all the most updated drivers from Lenovo support website (in particular the power manager, hotkeys, display drivers, etc... Nowmy battery duration, with the same power manager settings, has dropped from an average duration of 5 hours to around 1:30-2 h. (normal websites browsing, email checking, nothing "too much"). I have performed a battery reset in the battery management section of the power manager, but nothing changed. When the display brightness is set to 0, the screen is actually still on (not so bright) but still on, and it's a way too much for me if I use my t440s during the night time. Before reinstalling the OS, setting the display brightness to 0 = black screen, like switched off. Hope someone can help me with this situation. Thanks a lot and wish you all a super weekend.Andrea

I agreed to a Lenovo update yesterday (3/21/2018 for my T440s. I remember it saying something about a Bios update and to make sure the machine was plugged in. After agreeing to everything and starting the update, after a while I looked over and noticed that it had a black screen with nothing happening for several hours. The green power button light is on, but when I press it, it just beeps at me. Even holding it down for 10 seconds or more with nothing but a series of beeps (screen stays black with green power button light on). I tried taking the battery out and letting it run out of power, then put the battery back in, plugged it back in and tried to get it to restart.

One thing you might try that works on some ThinkPads is to reset the BIOS by unplugging the coin cell battery.     That will involved removing the AC power adapter, the main battery and the bottom cover of the laptop, which is detailed on page 61 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual.    Once the base cover is removed, unplug the coin cell battery (see page 67 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual) for a few minutes to let the power drain, and then plug it back in, re-assemble the laptop and try booting it back up. Be careful when prying up the latches while removing the base cover because they can break easily, but I found that gentle prodding and an old credit card etc. can be useful in working the latches free, but you can also get special tools at most electronic stores (often referred to as "spudgers"), to help pry open the case if desired. Best of luck,

However, when I try this it asks me to insert my recovery media, so I inserted the recovery disks I made using HP Recovery manager and then I'm told that they're all invalid. Any suggestions? Not sure why it comes up saying they're invalid as I made them in the proper way and have deleted my recovery partition so can not re-create them.

Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks, MattthewB

A:Refresh Windows 8.1

You have use the Windows 8.1 DVD or the recovery media containing the large install.wim file.

You can create installation media by downloading Windows 8.1 files from Microsoft (takes some time and downloads lots of files)

Hello and thanks in advance for your help! The other day I was having some difficulty opening one of my browsers so I decided to reboot my computer. This occurred after Windows tried to have me upgrade to Windows 10 and I clicked upgrade later. For some reason it still tried to download something but I closed it. I rebooted like I said but after the start screen, instead of going to the screen to enter my password I was just getting a blank screen. Perhaps it was running an update and I needed to wait longer but I thought it was frozen and forced a shutdown. The same thing happened when I started again so again I forced a shutdown and tried to reboot in safe mode. Turns out that's not s thing in Windows 8 and it took me to a screen asking if I want to refresh my system or reformat. I chose refresh because the description sounded benign enough but it actually reset every setting I had made and deleted all my programs, which included browsers with saved passwords and bookmarks. I tried to open system restore but apparently it wasn't automatically making restore points! I have a Lenovo and saw an option for "onekey restore" so I tried that but it was somewhat confusing and I wasn't able to find a restore point there either. I saw somewhere online that your old files are saved and indeed I was able to find a Windows.old file one my computer. Can someone please help me return my computer to how it was before the "refresh" that I did? I'm pretty sure when I did it the computer said... Read more

I should add that since the refresh it's like my computer has a virus. I keep getting pop ups to install a faster browser and Internet explorer keeps opening to random ads.

I have a Laptop running win 8.1 HP Pavilion 15 Sleekbook Model 15-b119wm
It was running very slow and took a long time to load different things and to uninstall and kept freezing. So, I did the refresh and it loads up to 85% and hangs and when finally gets to 100% a popup box comes up with error saying: Windows could not complete the installation. To install windows on this computer, restart the installation. Then, when I click ok it starts all over again. I can't even get into safe mode when It tries to restart.

Edited since original posting: I have since found that build 10586 was the W10 Insider Preview version, which continues to be updated in parallel with...
build 10240, which is the RTM, or final retail version. Not sure how I ended up with the different versions as I backed off from the Insider Program, back to W7, long ago...

Scenario: I have 2 computers, both say that they have all updates applied.

Computer A gives the following information when I access System > About:Edition: Windows 10 Pro
Version: 1511
Build: 10586.63
Product ID: finishes with AA569

Computer B, for System > About:Edition: Windows 10 Pro
No version or build info
Product ID : finishes with AA812
Using System Information tool yields slightly different results:

Version: 10.0.10586 Build 10586Computer B:OS Name: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro
Version: 10.0.10240 Build 10240
It is not my primary problem (see below), but I cannot understand why the System > About, build number on Computer A is different to the version and build given by System Information.

My actual problem is as follows. I have had recurring losses of internet connectivity since upgrading each of these two computers to W10. I found a link somewhere which helped to sort out Computer A. I had to download an iso file of W10Pro and then do a REFRESH, which kept all the apps and data intact. Nice.. it resolved my problem and sorted one or two I didn't realise that I had. A:Cannot do a REFRESH of Windows 10

Hi, I would imagine the problem is the build difference. The two PCs are at two different build levels; 10240 was the first public release, and 10586 the build released in November. Upgrading from 10240 to 10586 is virtually a reinstallation of Windows.

Given that you only have the one DVD, that will be one of those specific builds.

You can freely download Win 10 installation media, so you should download the appropriate one as needed.

I did a system refresh and I noticed a 'windows.old' folder that contained all my programs.

Is it safe to copy it back to my programs directory or should I reinstall these programs and delete windows.old?

A:Windows.old after refresh

Do NOT copy it directly to your programs folder, it will either not work or mess up your system, reinstall all your applications the normal way. You can safely delete it if your new OS is working fine.

I have read the tutorial (Refresh Windows 8 - Create and Use Custom Recovery Image) . Would I not get the same result if I created a Disk and Partition Backup using a program like Acronis or Easeus? That way I hope to keep all my initial system, personal files and third party applications.

Welcome to Eight Forums, Nuccii. Good to have you.

Windows 8 comes with an ISO creation software already. I suppose one could use other software.

Hey all, I've got a question regarding the refresh feature. I'm thinking about doing it because my XPS is full of a bunch of programs and I'm not sure about what's even used anymore, especially of the 9000 Visual C++ redistributables in programs and features. My question is this- does there need to be a windows 8 recovery partition? This machine shipped with W7 Home Premium and I installed W8 Pro followed by the 8.1 update so I'm not really sure if that recovery partition was updated, and whether or not I even need to worry about that to begin with..

Thanks in advance!

A:Windows 8 refresh

Hey Zach,
You'll need a recovery of some sort, be it a built in partition or media you created.
Click on the 'Get Started' button, it will tell you what to do next; you can cancel if you wish.
(I think maybe the 'Remove everything...' option is what you're looking for.)

After I "refreshed" the PC with Windows 8.1, the taking off the applications also malfunctioned & misconfigured, the Windows Media Center from downloading the guide listings and is "stripped" of (functionality) from prior usage. I
now need to replace Windows Media Center on my PC. I use a USB TV Tuner to watch programs with a digital antenna.
Is there a way to uninstall the Windows Media Center, to "re-use" the (product key) that came with the Windows 8.1 Pro pack, and reinstall Windows Media Center for "full" functionality?

A:Windows 8.1 pro pack with Windows Media Center is misconfigured after a refresh the PC.

Hi,
First make sure your Windows 8.1 is not upgraded from Windows 8. Windows 8 key cannot be used to activate in this case.

Try uninstall the Windows media center from Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off > Media Features > Windows Media Center.
At the command prompt I used the "slui.exe 3" command to re-activate windows. If still cannot be activated, use slui.exe 4 and follow the instructions as mentioned.
