WinXP's 'Limited' Mode - How to Enable?

Q: WinXP's 'Limited' Mode - How to Enable?

Hi all, I have just read a very enlightening article in PC Magazine concerning SP2 Security Center Spoofing Threat - http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1639276,00.asp The article says, essentially, that the XP Firewall could possibly be spoofed by malicious script which would tell it to "open the door" for an attack. I am probably not doing the article justice so please read it, as well as Microsoft's response.I am running XP Pro on one machine only. I am set as the Administrator and the only user. The article says, in part:"...The one mitigating factor that we found is that to change the WMI, and spoof the Security Center, the script has to be running in Administrator mode. If executed in Windows XP's Limited Mode, it will give an error, and not allow changes. Unfortunately, most home users who will be at risk, run in the default administrator mode."[The question(s) part:] What are the advantages/disadvantages of running XP Pro for a single user in Limited Mode? Where do I go to make the changes?P.S. This is my first foray into the world of BC outside of the infamous Privacy Tools 2004 thread in the Breaking News - Security Forum.

Preferred Solution: WinXP's 'Limited' Mode - How to Enable?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: WinXP's 'Limited' Mode - How to Enable?

Your question is a good one, Xsara. A part of my present problem is lack of understanding with regards to what I find as a damnable part of winxp pro...the logon feature, and user groups in general. I too use xp pro on one machine only and have found it diffficult to with clarity and foresight manipulate the OS in such a way to accomodate my needs. If you don't mind killin' some time, references to the problems, not the fixes are within this post of mine and links within it:my problems (in particular, the most recent parts of the thread)and this, from a post re: freshly installing windows which kinda sums it up:the questions I had in mind... I've done it a half dozen times (re-installation) and know that variations exist and they do exert influences on the issues of system stability and speed of operation to an extent.Configuring the OS, especially winxp pro can be done well, or not so well. I'm in between with regards to my own experience.I'm convinced, from the very start of it's operation, that winxp is more friendly to a large corporation with multiple PC's in multiple locations with multiple users on each one than it is to the single user who initially wanted the extra security features within the file structures themselves and may have been sorta duped by the thought that it was better to get the most advanced operating system so that preparation for the future was assisted, as well. Naturally, I'd like to hear more from someone about your question...

I apologize in advance for not having more information, but since my primary PC has blocked windows from me, I am using my #2 PC to request assistance. My primary PC is a Dell T3500, quad processor, 12Gb RAM running WinXP x64, I use AVG2012 for my Antivirus with scheduled automatic scans, and last MS update was 15Nov. I have an Asus P5AD2-E premium motherboard, AHCI is available in the Bios but I did not need it when I installed WinXP Pro, now I need it to run my external Sata backup drive.

I have followed many methods, none of which work for me, I have an Intel Southbridge ICH6R chipset, Itel 82801FB, I have downloaded and followed the instructions for the Reg files, and have the correct Iastor.sys in the System32\drivers\ folder etc. when I reboot I am supposed to enter the Bios, enable ACHI, reboot and when Windows is trying to install new hardware I am supposed to stop it and run the Intel driver installer, in my case, iata70_enu.exe, I can't ever get Windows to reboot, I am in a cycle that starts Windows then shuts down and restarts, until I return the Bios to what is was, Sata.

I was hoping someone had information that could help me solve this.

A:Need to Enable AHCI after WinXP install

usually you have to install the drivers at first install of the os but i think i have seen a thread around here were someone suggested to basically do a os repair and just add the ahci drivers, if i recall correctly.

I have a Toshiba satellite laptop running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 and is only like a year old. Standby was working fine until a few months ago. Now all of a sudden standby and hibernate are disabled. There is NO hibernate tab in power options. I have not done anything to my bios, nor have i formatted my hard drive at all. I have read online that drivers can prevent them from working, but i have no idea on how i can find which one. Other people have said i need an updated display driver, but the only display driver for my model is for Vista. I really want standby because my laptop stays on like all day and gets pretty hot after a while.

A:Re-enable Standby On Winxp Home

I would try deleting the hiberfil.sys file and then re-initiating power options (after rebooting the system). That should take care of possible file corruption as the cause of your issues.http://www.windowsitpro.com/Article/Articl...7585/27585.htmlLouis

I have a WinXP/Home SP1 system from a client that I have tried everything to repair. (The son downloaded KaZaa and dad hit the roof. He went into Add/Remove programs and starting deleting anything he didn't recognize, and he knows next to nothing about computers). I've cleaned virus's, adware, applied Windows Updates, the whole 9 yards but I have not been able to get around a problem accessing the CD drive.

Before doing a reformat of the hard drive and reinstall I tried to lay down WinXP on top of itself. Worked OK so far. Now I would like to recover/enable anything existing that I can. I can see the folders for users that existed before are still there but my desktop is blank.

Is there a way I can reinstate the desktops and/or the user accounts?

My computer was running slow with the HD churning away, so I ran the anti-ware (Malwarebytes and Trend Micro) and found no infections.

Then I ran defrag, but had only 5% free space, so I deleted and moved files and got to 15%, but defrag runs for 10 minutes and declares itself done, but it looks like only about 20% of the drive is getting defragged and the rest is badly fragmented.

I ran CCleaner, chkdsk /r & /f, and went to run defrag in safe mode only to find trying to boot in safe mode causes the dreaded BSoD! But WinXP SP3 runs fine in normal mode!

No hardware changes in more than a year, the last time I ran in safe mode was a couple of months ago to get rid of a nasty Trojan.

So, why will defrag not finish? Why does safe mode cause the BSoD?

FWIW:clearing up the HD space had reduced the HD churn.

I ran chkdsk /r in the recovery console and System File Checker, with no apparent change.

Running processes can cause this like Toolbars if you have toolbars I'd say remove them completely as they will conflict with I.E.'s toolbar as with other programs like defrag, ( to remove a program make sure it's not running then click Start/ Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs then restart the pc Always restart the pc after installing , removing , or updateing a program ). Then disconnect from the internet and right click on any icons next to the clock and click exit or end to stop them till your done doing the defrag. Then run cleanup disk and try to defrag. I can't enable firewall protection on WindowsXP. Here's the actual message printed in the window where the option should be:

"Windows cannot display the properties of this connection. The Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) information might be corrupted. To correct this, use System Restore to restore Windows to an earlier time (called a restore point). System Restore is located in the System Tools folder in Accessories."

The only problem is that I just cleared out all of my system restore points when I turned it off to clean up some ad and spyware remains. Is there anyway to fix this problem without completely re-installing Windows? It's takes a long time to re-install and it's a pain to download all the critical updates and service packs, especially on dial-up! Help!!

Looks like you're gonna stay a virgin, cause that ain't no high-end video card you got there.

Now on to the real topic. I'm not quite sure what you are saying as regards enabling VGA mode. All you need to do is make sure you disable any onboard vga chip in the bios (because you are using an add-on video card), and that's it. Your PC should boot and video should eminate from your card. Pressing F8 during boot simply allows you to select 'safe mode', which is normally used when you are experiencing problems such as misbehaving drivers. You shouldn't need to do this at all normally.

A:Can't enable hibernate mode

Hey there!                      Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!I understand that you have issues putting your PC in hibernation mode. Difference between sleep mode and hibernation: Sleep ModeSleep mode is a power saving state that is similar to pausing a DVD movie. All actions on the computer are stopped, any open documents and applications are put in memory while the computer goes into a low-power state. The computer technically stays on, but only uses a bit of power. You can quickly resume normal, full-power operation within a few seconds. Sleep mode is basically the same thing as ?Standby? mode.Sleep mode is useful if you want to stop working for a short period of time. The computer doesn?t use much power in Sleep mode, but it does use some.HibernateHibernate mode is very similar to sleep, but instead of saving your open documents and running applications to your RAM, it saves them to your hard disk. This allows your computer to turn off entirely, which means once your computer is in Hibernate mode, it uses zero power. Once the computer is powered back on, it will resume everything where you left off. It just takes a bit longer to resume than sleep mode does (though with an SSD, the difference isn?t as noticeable as it is with traditional hard drives).Use this mode if you won?t be using your lapt... I've recently had a problem with Windows, and I can only boot in Safe Mode. Everything there works as it should. However, the drivers for my CD burner do not activate in safe mode.
In order to fix my problem, I need to create a recovery disk for vista, and I have the disk image (iso), and the software needed to do it. Only I can't, because of those pesky little drivers and their reluctance to run in safe mode.

I know it is possible in XP to solve this issue through regedit, I simply wondered if anyone knew how to load the necessary drivers for CD burning in Vista's safe mode.

A:How can I enable USB Support in Safe mode

Your USB controller driver should load normally in Safe Mode. If not look in Device Manager to see if it is detected and in error. If so uninstall it in Dev Mgr, reboot into Safe Mode to see if it loads.

Otherwise install it from the Support Downloads webpage for your model PC, probably contained in chipset.

May I ask why you are working in Safe Mode?

Is this the original corrupt HP bloatware preinstall? If so you should strongly consider doing what most tech enthusiasts do and Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7,

I am fairly computer literate. I am running WinXP on an AMDK7/600mHz machine with plenty of memory and harddrive space. When I added SP2 to WinXP, among some other things the AutoProtect Mode in my NAV 2003 application appears permanently disabled; even though I have gone through all the enabling steps (NAV Options), AutoProtect won't run. I have run a complete NAV scan, both from my application and from the Symantec site. I also regularly run updated versions of SpybotS&D, Pest Patrol (plus the full suite of PP products like MemCheck, Clean, etc), Ad-Aware (6.0 Plus) and HijackThis (1.98.2). I have scoured the Symantec and other KnowledgeBases for details on AutoProtect not running, but I've either tried all the remedies--except uninstalling, then reinstalling NAV--or the suggested remedy does not fit my situation.

As I've discovered, NAV is very difficult to uninstall; the reinstall is likewise difficult, even if it's an Upgrade and NAV detects any remnants of the previous version. I've even had problems upgrading to a brand-new licensed program (such as when I installed NAV 2003). So I've tried to avoid the NAV uninstall/reinstall "solution" 'cause it's seems to be so difficult.

I know how to use Regedit to search/modify the Registry, but I'm reluctant to try anything unless I'm following a very specific checklist from a reliable KnowledgeBase (like Symantec or Microsoft). I know I have at least one Pest ("buried deep in the operating syst... Read more

Hi and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download Index.dat Suite to clean out all the temp folders. Do not run it yet.

Download CWShredder and click on Fix (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you). If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure
that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up).

Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click
Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

So my question is...Is after i verify that the user has the right password, instead of enabling the shift key is there any other way of opening the program in design mode? that is bringing the Access Db window??

I installed Crysis 2 (Beta 5620) and must say that the game is awesome. The final release will be probably DX9/DX10/DX11, but by now, the beta is only DX9/DX10. Even running in DX9 mode the graphic effects are very intense. I know it's possible to run the beta in DX10 mode, but all that I tryed failed.

Can anyone help me ?

PS: Crysis 2 (r5620) is avaiable for download in BetaArchieve FTP (for BA members of course).

I had a Windows 32 System Error.  A file was corrupt or missing.I first had to go into the Bios and disable SATA Native Mode. Then, I put in the Windows Recovery Disk I purchased from Amazon.I went to a screen that read, "Microsoft Windows XP(TM) Recovery ConsoleThe Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery.Type EXIT to quit the Recovery Console and restart the computer. 1. D:\MiniNT Which Windows installation would you like to log onto(To cancel, press ENTER) This didn't  work at all. So I went back to try a step (Recovery Mode F11) that initially didn't work but I noticed more progress since I disabled the SATA Native mode. So I went to Recovery Mode and this time it worked.I recovered Windows back to Factory settings.Do I have to go back and enable SATA Native now?

Hi: It is best if you can, but you cannot until you install the SATA ACHI driver. If you have an Intel processor, I can help you do that.  If you have an AMD processor, I can't because I don't know how. If you have a notebook with an Intel processor, please post your full notebook model. It isn't really a big deal if you can't change the setting back. You'll hardly notice any difference. It is just that ACHI mode allows the hard drive to perform more efficiently for lack of a better word. See this article for more info. http://www.differencebetween.net/technology/difference-between-ahci-and-ide/ Paul

Did you use an elevated command prompt by typing CMD in the Search box and Right click > Run as Adminstrator?
What do you get if you simply type bcdedit /? at the command prompt? bcdedit.exe should be located in C:\Windows\System32.

Hi Tech Guys,
I'm facing a problem. I'm trying to start my windows (7 64bit, Ultimate, also tried on Proffessional) in test mode but unfortunately its not starting in it. I've tried "bcdedit.exe -set TESTSIGNING ON" & "bcdedit.exe /set TESTSIGNING ON" both with administrative privileges to cmd and also tried "Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider" But still its not starting in test mode.
Both Method successfully executed before restart but after restart, nothing happens. No logo appears over clock area of Desktop.
