Preferred Solution: "page cannot be displayed" error driving me crazy#@!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Download AdAware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by clicking
on "Check for updates now", connect.

Click on Start, Use custom scanning options, Customize.

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"

"Scan within archives"
"Scan active processes"
"Scan registry"
"Deep scan registry"
"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL"
"Scan my host-file"

Click on Tweak,
Select scanning engine and click on "Unload recognized processes during scanning"
Select cleaning engine and click on "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

Then click "proceed" to save your settings.

Click on Next

Run the scan and fix everything.

Reboot and post another HJT log for review.

Hey There,

Was just hoping someone knows wtf is going on here-

Some .chm files, when I try to read them with the default winXP .chm viewer, display the standard Internet Explorer "The page cannot be displayed" error page in the viewing pane. The table of contents is visible, however, just not the page data.

Now, if I copy the same .chm file to my desktop, it opens fine!

This only happens with some of my .chm files, although it is always the same ones- and they always work when I copy them to the desktop, just not when they are in the folders I keep them in.

The data is there, it just can't be accessed for some reason (if I use a .chm 'decoder' to decode the .chm files to .htm format, they work fine; however I don't want to have to mess with a hundred different .htm files just to read a book)

BTW, I have tried changing the filenames with no avail.

If anyone has solved this problem or has any suggestions I would be greatly appreciative.

Hi, everyone. Just found this website, and it looks like it will hopefully be helpful. Here's my problem:

I am unable to access a specific website: www.edline.net. I receive an error message stating that this page cannot be displaye (as if the site doesn't exist). However, on other computers, the page appears fine.

I have Norton Internet Security installed w/parental controls (haven't gotten a chance to try turning them off; don't know if this could be the problem). I'm thinking that maybe the oversensative parental controls are blocking the site, but can anyone think of what else could be causing this problem?

I only get the message when I go to www.edline.com. Other websites work fine.

Thanks for your help, everyone!

Okay, I'll try to explain this as best I can as I'm posting this for my husband. He is on a business trip in SE Asia (India, Korea, Taiwan) and while in India he picked up a virus. It's been cleared but he continues to have this problem with IE7...
He's able to open it and do a little reading or get his email, but after about 5 minutes he only gets the "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error and is unable to open any new tabs or windows, no links work, etc. (he then has to reboot to get it back). He's cleared files (history, cookies, temp files, etc.) using Internet Options and Explore, disabled add-ons, enabled & disabled pop-ups, etc., all to no avail. He's even tried using it in safe mode but the same problems occur. He was able to download HJT which got rid of hggff.dll (Vundo?). He said he would try to email the hjt.log file tomorrow morning (tonight EST) and I will post it, if this will help to decipher the problem. Meanwhile, if anyone has a suggestion of what else to try I (and he) would greatly appreciate it!
He is using a Dell D610 laptop running XP-Pro on a VPN (required to get his emails from work).

Getting the cannot display DNS error message at any website I try to get to. It appears that my connection is open because I use a router and my laptop works fine. Other programs (p2p stuff, virus updater, etc) that require net access also will not work. Not sure if this is an issue that can be helped with HijackThis, but the problem seemed to start happening after I used Ad-Aware for the first time in a long time, so I'm thinking spyware may be involved. If not any advice as to what the prob may be would be great, thanks in advance for any help! System specs are

Welcome to TSF.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. 1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.

I have been experiencing the "page can't be displayed" when clicking on some links in IE 11 or sometimes I get the error message within a page. This happens only in IE, not in Firefox. I received an email newsletter and when I move my mouse over the link, at the bottom of the page it shows the link as:

If I set IE as my default browser and click the link it fails to expand and bring up the web page. In the web address bar, it shows the above link. However, if I set Firefox as my default browser and I click on the link, it goes through and brings up the page and has the follow address:

http://www.scottevest.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=sev&Category_Code=sev_collection_sale&utm_campaign=kim_komando_0 7_25_14

I suspect the link is a shorted substitute link like "tiny url" or similar using Google. What is preventing IE from going to the web site like Firefox does?

Hi i am in need of urgent assistance with Internet Explorer. When i went on to my lap top i it told me that i had spyware and needed a program in order to detect and remove it. I didn't have a spyware program on my lap top at the time so i did a search in Google for "spyware remover". When i did this i went to this link:
That site has an online spyware scan that's supposed to detect and remove spyware. I did this scan on my lap top and it told me that i needed to delete certain files that contained spyware. So, naturally i agreed for the program off that site to do it for me. However, ever since i did this every website i go to on Internet Explorer comes up with the message "Page cannot be displayed"(i am currently using another machine). When i open my web browser, at the bottom it has a link to the file SHDOCLC.DLL so i have a feeling that this file is corrupt which is causing webpages to not come up. If ANYONE can help me with this problem it would be much appreciated. I hope someone out there has read all that and can help me! Thanks heaps.

A:"Page cannot be displayed" Error

Hi mickol25,

had a quick google search about the file you refer to here, have a read, I don't think however that is your only problem. Have you got HijackThis? If not, download from the link I'll leave at the bottom and save it into it's own directory on your C:\ (hard disk) drive because you'll need to save some log files on it. Read the help file with it and run a scan and post your log back on here where someone will evaluate it and give you advice. After you have run the scan do NOT 'fix' anything, just save the log and post it. You will have to run another later and fix the problems.

I first posted this to Microsoft Newsgroup for IE 6.0 but have received NO
solution. Then I placed it in the XP newsgroup in hopes of finding additional information.....NO LUCK there, either. If anyone has ANY SUGGESTIONS, please advise.
I've checked all the settings (dial-up, Internet Properties, modem) I can think of to see if there is something set incorrectly...now I'm not sure WHAT is supposed to be the proper settings but NO page will load regardless of the site. I emptied temp files, cookies, did system restore, and the connection IS
established. Also, used other sites besides MSN for the home page
and receive the same message. Uninstalled/reinstalled dial-up connection....still "page cannot be displayed" error appears. At a total loss what to try next. Any/all help or suggestions would be appreciated!

type "ping" Does it say the request timed out?

I have a PC running Vista SP1 and IE7. Whenever I try to go to some sites that use streaming video, I get a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error. I can get the videos to play on Firefox, but i would like to be able to use IE7. As of now, I am simply saving the target and watching the video after it downloads. The weird thing is that the videos used to play just fine, then one day they stopped and the same sites I used to watch the videos on gave me the error instead. Anyone seen anything like this?

Hi all,
I am sooooooooooooooooooooooo sick to f**king death of Windows security prompts!!! Ever since I first got XP about a decade ago (now on 7), this lovely little error dialog (or something similar) has not always, but at least once a month, shown up when I've
tried to move or delete a file or folder:
File/Folder Access Denied
You need permission to perform this action
You require permission from the computer's administrator to make changes to this file/folder
(name of file or folder and date created)
Try Again and Cancel buttons
Clicking Try Again brings the same dialog up again, and clicking Cancel has obvious results.
I'm on the only user account on the PC, which is an Administrator account.
Trying to take ownership of the file/folder tells me that "Access is denied".
Haven't tried using the hidden admin account as I don't see why the f**k I should have to!!!!
Look Microsoft, I don't give a flying f**k if my files are vulnerable to hackers or not; I just want to be able to access them MYSELF!!!!!!! My network is on a router with a 128-bit encryption key and a hardware firewall, as well as a software firewall on
each PC! If anyone can get through all that, I'll tip my hat to them and let them do whatever they want to my files! But for crying out loud, I JUST WANT COMPLETELY UNINHIBITED ACCESS TO MY OWN F**KING FILES!!!!!!!!!! This has been a problem for as long as

So, I haven't used TSG in over four years and I'm really sorry if this is the wrong place or if I don't give enough information, If I am doing anything wrong. please let me know and I can try to do better! That being said, I am having extreme problems with my laptop.. I am no longer able to use sound, at first it started with just my headphones (USB headphones) I had them plugged in and the volume control claimed I had no audio devices when I tried to choose my headphones as what I wanted to hear sound through, My laptop speakers worked perfectly fine at this point.

I looked online, I did literally everything that every page suggests when you search for this specific problem, I restarted with the usb headphones plugged in, I tried updating drivers (No updates found), I uninstalled drivers and reinstalled drivers (after doing this, I lost the ability to even have working laptop speakers, They started coming back with the same messages that the headphones would give me. No audio devices) I have no restore points on my computer as restore was suggested to me (I had recently used a program for viruses/malware removal that unknown to me also removed my oldest restore points) I am at my wits end with this.. Hi Yup, welcome to 7F!

You were on the right track but did you go far enough; Such as clearing the DNS cache in chrome, firefox, and windows?

This should help for chrome just follow the steps: How to Fix Resolving Host Problem in Google Chrome?

For Firefox, go to Tools >options >advanced >Network tab >Cached Web content, click on the Clear Now button to the right then refresh the page to see it drop to 0, by the way if you don't mind me asking, how much disk space was the cache consuming?

This adds one more step for windows, the reset: DNS Resolver Cache - Flush and Reset in Windows

There is the possibility that your anti-malware program could be causing this, but you failed to list it so I couldn't look in that direction: Resolving Host caused by third party anti-malware programs? | google search
If the flush and reset didn't work try this from post #14

I hate the fact that many programs will install an option/icon in the context menu and not always give you a way to shut it off. Case in point is my "New" Context Menu where I have been able, though registry edits to get rid of some of the lamer icons, like Bitmap image and Briefcase but not "Windows Live Call", which was put there because of installing Windows Live Messenger.

I'd love to be able to get rid of that somehow, but have not really centered in on the right registry entry to do so. I also tried the program "ContextEdit" but have not been able to get it to work on Vista x64.

Any other suggestions?

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

Just wondering.....
Very frequently when I'm moving around online I will get the classic page reading "The page cannot be displayed" bla bla bla.....
Sometimes when searching for a site I know exists.
Sometimes after I have inputed some info on an online form & submit it.
Moving from one page to the next in both large & small web sites.
Not a big deal most of the time but it bugs me!
Does anybody out there have any ideas how to prevent this without lowering my protection level too far?
I'm currently using the following (w/ XP&SP2 using IE) & probably more....
LavaSoft Ad-Aware
Spybot Search & Destroy
etc. etc.

On a side note this forum is amazing.
I have only posted a few times but reading what is going on is really helpfull.
THANKS in advance !

Hi, I have been getting these pop-ups for a few days now. Some are from "cpvfeed.mediatraffic.com" and some are from "url.adtrgt.com." I went to the mediatraffic.com website and it said they use "permission based" advertising that pops up when a related keyword or url is used on the person's computer so I'm assuming that's what's triggering the pop-ups whenever I go to a new webpage. I contacted them asking if I could be removed but (surprise surprise) they didn't answer.

But they're driving me CRAZY! With all of this scanning and security software I figured I would be protected but apparently not!

Please help, I saw a few threads about this adtrgt.com pop-up thing but I think I'd like personalized help because I didn't understand how the other person got rid of it.

Sorry to be redundant but I'm desperate! Thank you so much!

I have Windows XP w/McAfee Security Center.

I apologize if anyone has already asked these questions, I'm having such issues with the internet right now I can't check to see if they have been asked. Plus everytime I come here I can't seem to find out how to just log in and post my question.
I'm running Windows XP with the newest version of IE. I have a dial-up connection, and while I am aware of just how slow this is, something has to be wrong otherwise. It hangs everywhere I go - no matter what site I visit I wait and wait and wait for it to connect. The little flag in the corner barely flaps. Most of the time I get "The Page Cannot be Displayed" - so I then refresh only to get half the page with some of the buttons not filled in, or it just boots me off the internet altogether. I've called my ISP who says they've done everything on their end they can and that the problem must be my computer. My call manager (the program that shows me who's calling) won't work, once it's connected it gives me a pop error about a socket connection error and this pop up comes up continuously - once I click ok, it comes back up over and over and over.. so much that I have to disable it.
I'm at the end of my rope for how to fix these issues. It's slower than slow. As a matter of fact I've spent the last 90 minutes trying to get to the Tech Support site and had to type this in notepad first because I was getting frustrated waiting and waiting for the site to come up. I've been having a problem for several months with my browser(s) and hoping someone here might be able to help.

I use both Internet Explorer and Firefox, so I've decided this isn't a browser problem. About half the time I click on links-- either from inside the browser, whether I am opening in a new window or not, from an e-mail program or chat program-- I get the "Page cannot be displayed" error. However, when I click Refresh, the page will suddenly load just fine. Usually I have to click Refresh more than once, sometimes five or six times before the page actually loads. I have no idea why it's happening and I can't seem to narrow the possibilities.

Does anyone know why this would be happening?

I'm using Windows XP, if that's of any relevance.

I've been having malware issues lately, and have performed numerous scans with different programs:

MalwareBytes (removed several threats)
Avira Antivir (found nothing)
Ad-aware (bad cookies)
Safety.live.com - found items but couldn't fix it

The popups (more like new tabs, as I had the popup blocker enabled) have stopped, and it seems to be running better, but the weird thing is I can't access Windows Updates. It just says "This page cannot be displayed".

Also, the yellow shield in the system tray shows up when you first boot up, but then it goes away, as if a program/registry entry has not loaded yet when that icon first loads, but then kicks it out when it does load up.

We did some searches, and found that we should just run HiJackThis and post the log for you smart guys to analyze.

My ex-boyfriend was good with computers, but he isn;'t around and i don't know what to do. Thanks!

A:I am connected to a wifi signal, but I get "page can not be displayed"

Have you tried reseting your router? If not,

1. Disconnect the router from the modem (not always necessary, but sometimes it is).

2. Find the reset button on your router (you will probably need a paper clip).

3. Hold it for 15-30 seconds, then release and let it set for a minute or less (probably when the power light stops blinking).

4. Do the same for you modem.

5. Once all of "internet," "dsl," light, or both, are on and not flickering, connect the router back to the modem.

Give it a minute or two. Once your hardware components make friends again you may or may not have to run through a basic setup for you router (it depends on the model, don't worry, most new routers are very easy to setup). If it doesn't good for you. Either way, your net should be working. Hopefully, if not, keep posting!

That should fix your wired part anyway, as for wireless you may or may not have to reconfigure something. If it still isn't working, post what model/version your router is.

Very Slow dial-up but have tried cellular broadband which works only marginally better. The broadband in fact would be roughly the speed of what dial-up used to be on Windows 95 many years ago, I used to watch short videos then but cannot even do audio clips now unless I download them first. Some web pages and parts of many others will not load at all regardless of reloading many times. Tried Firefox, Opera and several different modems.

Computer -Win 7 64bit 4 core Compaq 4gig ram 3Ghz processor. All updates. Reinstalling Windows on a NEW HD made no difference and as a test I went on line with nothing on the HD not even the (AVG) antivirus, made zero describable difference. I ran a few checks on the computer hardware and everything was OK, have also had the telephone co. check the lines and I even Changed ISP's. Any driver update attempts has always indicated the best driver is already installed.

Two things I would really really really like to know for sure -
(A) Why will a page often fail to load regardless of how much time you give it and then display INSTANTLY after you give up and disconnect?
(B) I read of some setting a while back which was supposed to make a page attempt reload 10 times and tried it but it didn't help one byte. .... So..... is there some utility available that will DISABLE the the error message "This page can't be displayed" (and perhaps a few other assorted excuses) and reload the page AUTOMATICALLY as many times..... and f... Hey everyone,

I have had this problem for about a week now, and I have tried everything I know of to figure out what it is, with no luck. Hopefully someone has seen a problem like this before and can help.

I am running XP, SP2. I will browse the net, and after about an hour after start-up, I will get the "Page cannot be displayed" error on all pages I visit. I had Norton installed, took it off. I had IE7 installed, reverted to IE6, no help. I reset my Winsock through the CMD box, nothing. I ran the Network diagnostic, and it said I have a Winsock catalog error, but resetting it does nothing. ALl this time, I am still connected to the internet, because downloads, uploads and whatnot continue.

I tried running the WInsock fix program, nothing. Once I restart, I am fine for an hour or so, then it happens again. I can't make an HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP connection. No firewall installed, other than WIndows Firewall. I have a DSL connection. I have cycled the Modem. I am at a loss. ANyone?

My brother's computer is running Windows 98SE and is connected to my XP machine via a Linksys router. I have no problems whatsoever accessing any internet sites or anything, but his machine is pretty messed up.

He can load his home page and connect to almost any site from his favorites list, but trying to access a webpage through the address bar (no matter if http:// or www is typed beforehand) or through the Google Toolbar, the result is always a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error. As soon as you click enter. I mean it doesn't even act like it is looking for the site, it just gives that error message right away.

I've tried emptying out the cookies and temporary internet files, but that didn't help. I reset the router settings and refreshed them but that didn't help either. I ran an Ad-Aware 6 scan and it found some browser hijack attempts along with some tracking cookies, but removing them didn't help the situation either.

I can't go on his machine to even download something like the newer version of Ad-Aware or HiJack This. I know that HiJack This can be downloaded from my machine and saved on a floppy and transferred to his computer, but I wouldn't be able to upload a log file of his machine to here (because I can't access these forums from his computer). I suppose I could save the log file to the floppy, and upload it from my computer, but I'm afraid his computer may be infected with something and I don't ... Read more

I've got IE 6 SP1, and for some time now I am having to click on the "Refresh" or "Go" buttons multiple times to get web pages to come up, if they'll come up at all.

This is happening on both my desktop and laptop, although the laptop just recently began having the problem. I've check my cable connections and everything is A-OK. Both PC's are clean from all viruses, Trojans, spyware, etc, etc. I'm comfortable with that statement after some great assistance from flrman1 over the weekend.

I've updated both systems with all the MS updates as most recently as today.

What next? And I'm not interested in messing around with Mozilla or Firefox at this point if this problem can be solved.

Oh, I'm also getting the Windows pop-up message that says, "Internet Explorer could not open the search page" if I type a web site address in the IE Toolbar Address line without putting the "www." in front.
